0:08everyone at Sam Evans here and Nick

0:10Fisher and welcome to consulting at TV

0:14so on this channel we discuss everything

0:17to do with business success financial

0:19success and also like your own

0:21psychology in yourself and how really to

0:23achieve anything in life you you really

0:26need a combination of these two things

0:27and today's topic we're going to discuss

0:30the way you do one thing is the way you

0:33do everything and it's a fascinating

0:36topic and if you have any area of your

0:38life which you want to improve we'll

0:40make better then this video is really

0:42going to give you a totally different

0:45way to look at it and solve problems and

0:48I'm sure it's going to help a lot of

0:49people so that's the question is how you

0:54do one thing how you do everything

0:57some people would say no they say you

0:59can still have these certain things that

1:02you can do but you can still be good at

1:04this even if you have these certain

1:06habits is that true I would say how you

1:10do one thing most of the time is how you

1:14do everything most of the time like

1:16because people can have one-off events

1:18you know sometimes a person who wakes up

1:21at 4:00 a.m. every single day might have

1:24a few days where they sleep in till like

1:267:00 8:00 a.m. so you couldn't freeze on

1:29that moment in time and say the way that

1:31guy woke up at 8 a.m.

1:33therefore he always wakes up at 8 a.m.

1:35it's the it's the rolling average of a

1:39certain amount of time but I you know I

1:42definitely believe that the ways if you

1:45track someone for like 30 days the way

1:48they do one thing that most of that time

1:50is the way they will do everything by in

1:53their entire life so if someone's

1:55apartment is dirty on average most of

1:58the time then it's everything's going to

2:01be dirty in their apartment most of the

2:02time also their car is probably dirty

2:05most of the time their computer desktop

2:07is dirty most of the time their email

2:10inbox is disorganized and probably in

2:12their mind they're totally

2:13disorganized and fumbling things and

2:15it's like a mentor told me once that

2:18when you're hiring someone like go out

2:21and look at their car because he said

2:23the way like the way the the way they

2:26keep their car like will tell you a lot

2:28about what type of person that is I

2:30don't mean what model Kuroda's I mean

2:32just how they care for it if it's clean

2:35or if it's just totally beaten up and

2:37just just miss everywhere because if

2:40someone has a totally messed up car like

2:43you know fast food wrappers everywhere

2:44it hasn't been washed and forever then

2:47that probably says a lot about that

2:48person yeah and then you told me you

2:51were moving to New York and that it

2:52became much harder for you to actually

2:53do that yeah well no one has a car here

2:55so that good and I never actually did

2:58that because I never really had the

3:00opportunity to go out and look at

3:01someone's car when I was hiring them but

3:03it did make me look at like you know it

3:07you can read a lot about a person by

3:09just how they do like one thing like one

3:12one thing I noticed a lot is that some

3:14people who don't finish anything will

3:16never finish anything and like um I'll

3:20give you examples to make sense of this

3:22so if someone always listens to a little

3:24bit of a song so if someone's always

3:26that person in the car who's like

3:27playing an iPod or an iPhone and then

3:30like they listen to a bit of a song then

3:32they change and they listen to that and

3:33they change where they're flicking

3:34between radio stations and if someone's

3:37like in one lane out into another Lane

3:39and then they sometimes go into this gym

3:41in a different gym or they think they're

3:43going to do this then that or they dress

3:45this way for a while and then they dress

3:47like that for a while and sometimes they

3:49don't early risers sometimes do this

3:50like the way someone if someone's just

3:53like that with like changing songs then

3:55they're highly likely to be like that

3:58with everything else in their entire

3:59life it's like I've observed that the

4:03pattern of someone's existence in any

4:05one isolated area will it's like fractal

4:09so if you can isolate someone's

4:11existence in just how they play a song

4:14on an iPod you can make a pretty

4:16accurate prediction of their existence

4:19and everything else in their entire life

4:21yeah that's fascinating I wouldn't have

4:24thought about that

4:25with people but some people are chronic

4:27song skippers when you're when you're

4:29with them and how that could translate

4:31to the rest their life these days people

4:34are like really 82 very much so it's

4:37more of a problem now than it seems than

4:39ever before just from it's because these

4:41too much supply like what's happened in

4:43the modern in the you know in the

4:46Industrial Revolution there was a

4:48massive amount of demand and not much

4:51supply and so that's how the industrial

4:54revolution came about when everyone

4:56started you know when people started

4:58supplying things it was about supplying

5:00steel supplying concrete supplying like

5:03all of these all of these industrial

5:05things or supplying cars like Henry Ford

5:09and the team model Ford it was all about

5:12production because there was so much

5:14demand and people were so hungry for

5:16production and supply that that's what

5:19that's what the mass of race was but now

5:23things have flipped and now we have

5:25moved into like the Information Age out

5:28of the Industrial Revolution and so now

5:30it's not a it's not a supply game

5:33anymore people who just supply a lot of

5:34widgets they find themselves with a lot

5:38of widgets and they need a way to sell

5:39them and so it's no longer about

5:42supplying it's about being able to

5:45connect supply with demand because

5:47there's a surplus of supply and there's

5:49not enough demand and so that's what the

5:51game is these days the game has become

5:54optimization not production and so we

5:58see companies like like uber it doesn't

6:02own cars yet it out it it out supplies

6:08yet like yellow cabs and taxi companies

6:11we see companies like booking.com

6:14they make way more money than actual

6:17Airlines these Airlines own all of the

6:19jets they own all of the pilots and

6:21everything this airline is just a

6:23clicking website I mean the booking comm

6:26is just a website but it makes more

6:28money because it's doing the

6:30optimization of the supply and so in the

6:32modern world it's more about what to

6:35sell than how much you can sell

6:38and it's an optimization problem and

6:40that's why I called it like the

6:42information age because with information

6:44we can optimize and find what is the

6:47thing to sell and it like this is why a

6:51lot of people at EDD these days it's

6:53because there's so much information out

6:55there and there's so much supply out

6:57there that we we don't know what to

6:59choose and so really in the modern day

7:02it's about what you it's more about what

7:05you ignore then what you pay attention

7:07to and so the best way to win in this

7:10new era is really to just block out as

7:13much as possible and back in the

7:16Industrial Revolution it was to take on

7:18as much as possible because there wasn't

7:19much knowledge there wasn't much

7:21information you wanted to be like a

7:22sponge and take on everything right and

7:25now and also of like American households

7:28we're acquiring a lot of stuff like they

7:30were buying multiple cars like bigger

7:32homes and more like different houses and

7:34then we saw that crash and like oh wait

7:36and so now really what but the way to

7:40win is to really like minimize and

7:42optimize it's to find like one thing

7:45which you really like and have less

7:47things so that you can focus on other

7:50areas yeah I think that's true is

7:53there's just been it's the information

7:55age but there's been so much information

7:57now that like the connection economy of

8:00people like uber and Airbnb and all

8:02these guys are coming in and that's

8:04that's the benefit right is because

8:06they're facilitating what's actually

8:07good and what's actually what's not well

8:10I've always said learning isn't hard the

8:12art of learning is very easy if someone

8:15tells you to learn something that's

8:16really easy to do you pick up some books

8:17on it you read it you take some notes

8:18you then you you start to understand it

8:21so it's not like learning isn't hard but

8:25knowing what to learn is hard that's the

8:28real problem it's it's knowing what to

8:30learn because if you know what to learn

8:32then you can easily learn it but that's

8:35the real problem we have right now we

8:37don't know what to learn and there's too

8:38many things to possibly learn so that's

8:41the problem everyone's faced with right

8:43is there a good solution to that problem

8:45that's it that's a tricky question it

8:47takes it takes a long time to figure out

8:49your optimization algorithm

8:51find out what to learn I mean I've got

8:54one for myself and like in my day to day

8:58business and problems and everything but

9:02the if I was to give a recommendation to

9:05to most people it's to figure out what

9:08you want like you have to look at what

9:11you want and then you have to look at

9:13what you have right now and we you are

9:15right now you have to do a you really

9:17have to stop and just do an accurate

9:19audit of your life and yourself like who

9:23you are now what you want to achieve

9:24what you're good at what you're bad at

9:26and just get real honest with it and

9:28then once you've done that then you can

9:31see what you need to acquire in terms of

9:35knowledge and everything to achieve this

9:37future width that you want and then once

9:40you know that now you can go out and

9:44learn and acquire that knowledge to

9:45achieve that thing so that's how you

9:49really have to like learn how to

9:50optimize information to achieve what you

9:52want to achieve but if you don't know

9:54what you want to achieve then you don't

9:55know what you should learn and that's

9:57what universities become it's basically

9:59I don't know what I want to do so it's

10:00like oh you should go to university and

10:02just learn some things and then you

10:04learn a whole bunch of things hey wait

10:05I'm supposed to be smart I've got a

10:07degree how come I still don't know

10:09anything it's because you have to have

10:12something which you're optimizing for to

10:14know what to learn right hmm so what are

10:16some things you've said no to then

10:18recently if there is all this all these

10:20things you want to do and all these

10:21potential avenues what if what have you

10:23learned to say no to because you know

10:26there are certain things things but like

10:29new technologies I would say is mostly

10:32what I what I don't do and like I don't

10:35have snapchat don't have the app don't

10:37have an account I don't have an

10:39Instagram I don't

10:42I barely like post on Facebook I don't

10:44use Facebook messages at all I have one

10:47email account that's it I don't text

10:49anyone like if someone takes me like I

10:52don't take them back and I pretty much

10:54give no one my phone number and so you

10:56know I try and take away all of these

10:58things because I noticed when I observe

11:00like most people that's all they do

11:03I'm like they don't they tell me they

11:05don't ever need

11:05to learn something and then I look at

11:08why they don't have any time and it's

11:09because they're trying to manage eight

11:11social media platforms and I'm ok with

11:13there's way and I might well maybe you

11:15should just delete them all and they're

11:16like oh no no that's not what you're

11:17supposed to do and I'm like okay well

11:19then just put up with what you have

11:20because that's all you're ever gonna get

11:22mm-hmm yeah that makes sense

11:25I've noticed that especially when you're

11:29jumping from platform to platform to

11:31that's just one more it's it's not

11:33incremental in the amount of time you

11:35have to think about it it's you're

11:37getting pulled from one thing to another

11:38and you have to completely reset and

11:40think about another platform now in a

11:41different way than you were on the first

11:43one so it kind of compounds - on top of

11:46it yeah but for most people what they

11:48want to achieve in their life I don't

11:49think a social network plays any part in

11:51that like I think people are using

11:53social media because that's what

11:55everyone is doing right and so you know

11:58when everyone is doing something I tend

12:00to not do it because it's eventual that

12:03everyone will be wrong

12:04right yeah and then especially for us

12:08kind of as marketers too is that people

12:11expect you to be on social because well

12:14how could you how can you mark it on it

12:15if you're not on it and using it

12:17yourself like how are you gonna learn to

12:18be able to monetize so like how do you

12:20feel about that maybe if you're not on

12:23some of those profiles how do you still

12:24maintain well I feel like I know how to

12:27do it better because I'm not gonna

12:28explain well because if I'm on it and

12:31looking at what other people are doing

12:32then I'm only going to do what they're

12:33doing because that's how I've been

12:35conditioned but we know you'd never look

12:37at what anyone else is doing and then

12:38decide to do it then I can connect my

12:40own analysis

12:41without any bias and then decide what I

12:44want to do regardless of what everyone

12:46is doing yeah yeah and then as far as

12:51people the drain on people's resources

12:54and how they're doing one thing that

12:57certainly contributes right is that how

12:59they're doing one thing is how you do

13:01everything and if you do everything and

13:04you're trying to learn all these

13:05different platforms you can't possibly

13:07do a good job in whatever you've decided

13:10to make your as your goal well why do

13:12you think like you know Millennials and

13:15people like live jobs skipping around

13:17like they can never settle down

13:18it's cuz that's what they like on their

13:20phones they're on Facebook then they're

13:22on snapchat then they're on like I don't

13:23know what these other things are there's

13:25tons of them and so any getting them

13:27text here like their computers popping

13:29up here there are pods popping their

13:30iPads popping up over there like it's

13:33just it's craziness and so that's if you

13:36if you if we observe that pattern of

13:38existence with social media right well

13:40that's the same pattern of existence

13:42they have when it comes to their their

13:45job we also observe that their pattern

13:48of existence when they become an

13:49entrepreneur

13:49they have shiny object syndrome they're

13:52like all words it's this or all it's

13:53that or it's this thing it's ecommerce

13:55it's a you know they're pinging around

13:57like a pinball machine because if we

13:59look at everything they're doing how

14:01they're doing one thing is how they're

14:02doing everything right so the modern day

14:05it's it's people are ad D because

14:08there's too much stuff and so that's how

14:10they're behaving and everything so

14:12really the answer to that to the you

14:15know to the problem is to stop is to

14:17stop doing a whole bunch of stuff like

14:19really start focusing I have like a

14:22competition with my girlfriend about who

14:24can have the least apps on their phone

14:25you know I'm sure most people have

14:28competitions that who's got the most and

14:30so like I got one email I got like no

14:33social media like I don't text anyone

14:37and I like take pride in that and I also

14:41just like having as little as possible

14:43because then the things I chose to be

14:45good at I can be great in whereas

14:48everyone else ends up kind of average at

14:50a lot right ya know and that's and

14:53that's a bigger problem that seems to be

14:55getting worse

14:55now with and it goes back to the amount

14:57of information out there as people are

14:59just looking at everything and then

15:01wanting to jump from thing to thing it's

15:03really easy to stop like if the easiest

15:05way I think is to observe how someone

15:08rides a bike or goes to the gym so if

15:13someone likes to go to the gym for a few

15:15for like two weeks then they drop off

15:17then they'll probably like doing

15:19everything for two weeks and dropping

15:20off if someone is a has been an avid

15:23like marathon runner for a long time

15:25that person's gonna be so reliable

15:27like they're going to be extremely

15:29reliable that stuff it's like a very

15:31good way to gauge

15:32how someone works out and how someone

15:34lives is a very good way to gauge how

15:36that person is going to be in other

15:38areas of their life and so I'm not

15:40judging people and saying that's who

15:42they are forever that's who they are at

15:45a moment in time but you can change it

15:47so you want to think about like if you

15:48want to make an improvement to yourself

15:50you want to think about how do I do one

15:52thing am i someone who always starts

15:54things but never finishes them but you

15:57probably if you watch a bit of a movie

15:58or a bit of a TV program and then don't

16:01finish it if you read a few pages of a

16:02book and then don't finish it if you

16:05like do all of these things but don't

16:06finish them then you really need to

16:09become a finisher like you should even

16:12look at every meal like okay I want to

16:13finish this meal I want to okay I've got

16:15this glass order I want to finish it and

16:16I want to if I'm doing a workout I'm

16:18gonna finish it if I'm gonna start

16:21writing an email I'm gonna finish it and

16:22you need to become a finisher if you're

16:25constantly getting stuck halfway however

16:29if you're someone that has only done one

16:31thing for a very long period of time and

16:34never done anything else I mean ignorant

16:35to everything else then you probably

16:37want to start doing a little bit of

16:38other things right it's like it's a very

16:42easy way to analyze yourself and see why

16:45things are the way they are for you you

16:48can just take any one area of your life

16:50and observe it and then you know why

16:52everything else is like that - got it

16:54so for you when you decided what was

16:58that ever an issue where you weren't

16:59finishing things beforehand before you

17:01start you know yeah I figured as much

17:03just from kind of the action you took

17:06its how I know about it yeah by making a

17:09mistake

17:10exactly so was how did you quit these

17:15things was it was it cold turkey did you

17:17have to work your way up did you start

17:18finishing glasses of water and then

17:20meals and then you work yourself up to

17:21bigger things often it's the so if it if

17:25you find that you're not committed in

17:26business you don't want to try and

17:28become committed in business you want to

17:30look for other areas of your life we are

17:32not committed and then become committed

17:33there it's often too hard to attack the

17:36one problem just isolated you want to

17:39look for other areas where it's

17:40appearing so if someone isn't committed

17:42in business then they should look we're

17:45in their personal life they're not

17:46committed

17:46if they're not waking up at consistent

17:48times we're going to be it at consistent

17:50times fix that if they do some things

17:52and drop off or if they your apartment

17:55gets like me see all the time they

17:57should solve those things and it's

17:58incredible how once you solve those it

18:00just solves here but if you try and

18:03solve it here while ignoring these

18:05things it doesn't happen hmm

18:07so it's how people get stuck all the

18:08time you can't like people don't have

18:11people don't have business problems or

18:13finance problems they have like life

18:15problems which reflect in their business

18:17and so in order to solve the business

18:19problem you have to solve the life

18:20problem hmm yeah what's your morning

18:22routine like right now on a weekday

18:26weekday is so I wake up at 4 a.m. and

18:29then it takes me precisely 10 minutes to

18:32get onto the cross train to get changed

18:34get on to the cross trainer I go on that

18:36for 45 minutes get off come upstairs

18:39make a smoothie and then I sit on the

18:42balcony I call it like moon bathing so

18:45that like I sit there and I drink this

18:47smoothie and the moon's still there like

18:49it's 4:45 it's like all 455 almost 5

18:53a.m. is pitch black and the moons like

18:55right up and so I drink my smoothie and

18:57moon bathing and then I have a shower

19:01and everything get ready and then I'm at

19:03the office by 5:30 hasn't always been

19:08that way that's the way I've got it now

19:10but there's been times where I you know

19:12I've definitely had times where I've

19:14been lazy and slept until like 2 p.m.

19:16you know I've had bad habits but right

19:19now I have a good habit when it comes to

19:21waking up and everything and the key

19:23there is just to if you do decide to

19:25have that routine at least have it for a

19:27certain amount of time right you can't

19:29just say you're doing it for a week and

19:30then shift to a different routine and

19:32then you're waking let's sort of routine

19:33if you do it for a week yeah it's only a

19:35routine if you do it I think 31 days 31

19:38mmm yeah because everyone has a

19:39different number I've heard 21 I've

19:41heard a month I've heard 90 if you can

19:43stop drinking for 31 days you pretty

19:44much you'll find all of a sudden that

19:46you don't want to drink anything like I

19:48always like we're growing our power ways

19:50used to drink on the weekends because it

19:51was just what everyone did in New

19:52Zealand and did I move to America and

19:55then I was like what was people don't do

19:57they're here and so it we just

19:59thirty days went by and then all of a

20:01sudden I was like I don't even want to

20:03drink anything and so now I haven't

20:04added anything to drink for like a year

20:07and a half and I used to think I'm not a

20:10morning person but then I when I stopped

20:12drinking it was very easy to be a

20:15morning person so you know people think

20:16they are this thing and they it's just

20:19just a choice like if you're not a

20:21morning person it's because you think

20:23that you're not a morning person you can

20:25just change your mind yeah got it

20:27so the key there is with with any sort

20:30of business goal or if they want to make

20:33more money if they want to do something

20:34if they want to meet a certain person

20:35often it's easiest just to change one

20:38thing in change yourself in so if you if

20:41you experience any problem in business

20:42or any problem with your finances think

20:46about what that problem is is it

20:47inconsistency is it like chaotic like

20:50how would you describe that problem

20:52right and then look for where else in

20:55your life that problem is showing up so

20:57if you are not committed to you know if

21:00you're not looking after your business

21:01then you probably aren't looking after

21:03yourself

21:05if your business is in bad shape like

21:07bad financial health if it you know if

21:09financials aren't done if you if you

21:13aren't up to date on all of these

21:14different things

21:15the enchancers are that's how your

21:17personal life is - and so it you know a

21:20lot of people are like no no no it

21:22doesn't have to be that way like I can

21:23keep having my personal issues and be be

21:26wealthy it's like no you can't if you if

21:28you do ever get the chance to have

21:30wealth and success and you don't fix

21:32yourself you won't have it for long

21:33it'll be gone yeah yeah because you see

21:38you see like some artists who have had

21:40success and I think that's why people

21:41point to it they're like well you know

21:43Ernest Hemingway did it this way or

21:46whoever he had a really destructive

21:47personality but he was still able to

21:49write these world famous novels but I

21:53think a lot of people don't see behind

21:55the scenes that's just not sustainable

21:56for a long like that can that can work

21:59and for some people maybe better than

22:01others but overall well it's like you

22:03have to be kind of like you have to be

22:06like like a chameleon kind of like I'm

22:09sure perming Ernest Hemingway we're

22:11probably had like okay

22:13sort of lifestyle like doing lots of

22:15different things that's where he got his

22:17insights from but then he would have to

22:19become a very focused driven person to

22:21write a book from start to finish he

22:24wouldn't have been a chaotic person if

22:25he finished an entire book right it's

22:28impossible to do and I'm sure he wasn't

22:30getting a ghostwritten yes so this is

22:32where people get it wrong they're like

22:33no no the secret is to be is to be all

22:36over the place and disorganized it's

22:37like sure but that's how that you might

22:40learn everything that way but you'll

22:41never get it down onto paper and never

22:43get it published unless you become the

22:45person who isn't chaotic and everything

22:48so the trick is to be able to switch

22:51between the two

22:52and so like you asked me about my

22:54routine that is my routine now but if if

22:58I was trying to go into a period where I

22:59was like wanting to innovate right now

23:03I'm just looking to take action and

23:04apply a lot of things and so right now

23:06it serves me best to have a rigid

23:08routine however if I went into a mode

23:10where I was trying to be creative with

23:12like innovations or coming up with

23:15out-of-the-box solutions to problems and

23:17things like this then I'd go into a mode

23:19of disorder so I would stay up all night

23:23then kind of sleep whenever I wanted I'd

23:25eat all sorts of bloody ice cream for

23:28breakfast and things like that I'm not

23:29even joking I do this when I'm trying to

23:31break when I'm trying to solve problems

23:34yeah yeah because you're trying to take

23:36yourself out of the environment that you

23:37couldn't solve that problem yeah well if

23:39I if I can't solve the problem I've got

23:40to change Who I am right

23:42hmm that's interesting but it all goes

23:45back to that same concept kind of how

23:48would you tie in because that almost

23:50sounds contradictory if someone came in

23:51and heard how you do one thing is how

23:54you do everything but for most of the

23:56time for most of the time yeah I guess

23:58that should be the caveat yeah it is

24:00it's not like I said you could find

24:02someone who who wakes up at the same

24:05time every day

24:06but you could catch him on one day where

24:07he decided he just wanted to eat bad

24:09food and sleep in it doesn't matter like

24:12that's that's healthy to do that every

24:13now and then it's overtime

24:15it's and that's why the 30 days is great

24:17you just observe it over 30 days and

24:19that's the only way you can learn

24:20because everyone can be great for one

24:22day everyone can wake up on time dress

24:25well and be on being

24:27zone for one day like that it's easy

24:30it's a different thing to be in the zone

24:33for 31 days straight much different so

24:37they're really to like to wrap this up

24:38to like concluded I would say if you're

24:41experiencing any problems like anywhere

24:43in your life in your business your

24:45finances like try to define what that is

24:48like what is this problem and then look

24:50for other areas in your life where this

24:52is showing up if you're not committed

24:54then you committed to going to bed you

24:56committed to eating waking up you

24:57committed to the gym you committed to

24:59being healthy if your business is

25:00unhealthy is your body unhealthy you

25:04know just look where else these things

25:05are showing up and solve it here and it

25:08will solve here instead of just trying

25:10to solve it here in ignoring what's here

25:13because that doesn't work it's like

25:15trying to like it's like this hand

25:17trying to hide like what it's doing from

25:19this hand it doesn't work very well

25:20right yeah awesome and so the real way

25:23to tie it up and to like one sentence is

25:25that the way you do one thing is the way

25:28you do everything when you observe it

25:30like over a long enough period of time

25:32and if you want to solve something solve

25:34it in your personal life first

25:42you
