0:00hey what's up everyone Simmons here and
0:02this week I am doing something a little
0:05bit different so I usually upload a
0:07video every Tuesday and these videos
0:10typically go from like 20 minutes to
0:13like an hour and I usually cover a lot
0:16of a lot of stuff and I go quite deep
0:18and to do that it requires a lot of time
0:21and this week I found myself quite busy
0:25you know running my business which is
0:27actually the main thing I do I have a
0:30company in my main goal and intention is
0:33to grow that and look after that and
0:35make sure everything's going well there
0:38and then I share my insights that I
0:41learned from practical application
0:43inside my own business on YouTube and it
0:45always kind of tears me from like the
0:48practical world to like talking about it
0:51right and it's quite jarring going from
0:53doing it and it's kind of like a pure
0:55practice to talking about it kind of in
0:59an abstract sense and this week I found
1:03myself busy running my company and I
1:06didn't upload a video yesterday because
1:08I just didn't have enough time and then
1:09I thought I'll do it on Wednesday and
1:11then it's Wednesday so I woke up and I
1:14was like I'll do it and then I started
1:16thinking we'll I don't have enough
1:19time to do it so then I thought screw it
1:22I will provide some value to you guys
1:24because it's the main reason why you'll
1:26hear not to just listen to me speak for
1:27like an hour or whatever going deep on
1:30some topics but to provide value and
1:32help you improve your life improve your
1:34business and achieve whatever it is
1:36you're trying to achieve so I'm going to
1:38recommend three books that are good that
1:40I've read recently that I highly
1:42recommend I've read hundreds and these
1:44are in the top like top 10 top 15 kind
1:47of books right so it's just gonna be
1:50real short and we're gonna get straight
1:51to it so first up is good to great by
1:56Jim Collins amazing book so real quick
2:00overview of it I'll put the links to all
2:02of these books beneath this video you
2:05can just click that go get it on Amazon
2:06so good to great Jim Collins in a team
2:09of about 10 people research for five
2:11years and they spent about
2:13hours researching actual companies that
2:17had not been doing very well
2:20they were not market leaders and they
2:22were actually declining so these
2:24companies were going bad right and then
2:28something happened
2:29and they turned around and then they
2:31went good and then they became the
2:32market leader in their respective fields
2:34and they maintained that market
2:36leadership for at least 15 years right
2:40so those were the parameters for this
2:42research project and that's quite
2:44interesting so they identified a bunch
2:46of these companies that fit those
2:48parameters and then they research them
2:50in depth for 30,000 hours with the team
2:52of ten and they looked for common
2:54patterns between these companies like
2:56what common patterns did these companies
2:59have in common that were once going down
3:01to turning around in sustaining market
3:04leadership as number one for at least 15
3:07years right what they found was really
3:09interesting these companies they were
3:11all doing different things they were all
3:13implementing a lot of the same things
3:15and Jim Collins she is those things in
3:18his book good to great it's amazing
3:21there's like concepts like the flywheel
3:23which I've talked to about on my youtube
3:25channel I mean Jim Collins was the guy
3:27who came up with that by Jeff Bezos I
3:30got Jim : he read good to great by Jim
3:33Collins and then he got Jim Collins to
3:35come and speak to the Amazon executives
3:37for a full day he paid Collins to do
3:40that
3:40that's how influential Collins has been
3:42on Amazon and their success in Amazon's
3:45flywheel
3:45I mean Bezos got there from Collins it's
3:48an amazing book if you're in business it
3:50would be irresponsible not to read it
3:52and another awesome insight from that
3:55book is that from the outside most
3:58spectators think that successful people
4:02and successful companies just explode
4:04out of nowhere like one day they're
4:06average and then all of a sudden they're
4:07just amazing but that's not what happens
4:10at all but that's the perception from
4:12the outside but the perception from the
4:14inside when interviewing people from
4:16these great companies was that nothing
4:19really miraculous was going on inside it
4:21was just slow chipping away at a big
4:25goal just one foot and
4:27front of the other one foot in front of
4:29the other just slow chipping that over
4:32time and mount it to something great
4:34right now the perception from the
4:36outside is one minute they weren't great
4:39now they are it must have happened with
4:41one miraculous event not true
4:44companies that companies and people that
4:46expect miracle overnight like success
4:49never get it and the people that just
4:51focus on slow and steady improvement
4:54like one foot in front of the other and
4:57they're the ones that actually achieve
4:59it
4:59and go read that book it's awesome
5:02second one is founders at work so this
5:05is a book which is like a collection of
5:07stories for our actual interviews from
5:09actual like founders so I forget the
5:13authors but I'll put the name I'll put
5:17the link beneath the video to this book
5:18so the author basically interviewed like
5:2320 20 or more founders of successful
5:27companies so there's like Adobe there's
5:31the founders of Gmail there's some early
5:34employees from Google what else is in
5:37there they they talked about what the
5:40founders of Hotmail and yahoo right so
5:43they interviewed a lot of the founders
5:46of a lot of successful technology
5:48companies and they did a Q&A like in
5:51person they would just interview them
5:53and ask a question and get the answer
5:54and then they transcribed those q and
5:56a's and then they turned it into this
5:58book which is just a collection of
6:00actual interviews so it realized it's
6:03really easy to read it's not theoretical
6:05it's actually very practical and very
6:08real it's like a mixture of practice and
6:10story and reality and intertwined into
6:14this so you'll learn a lot from that and
6:16it's very entertaining as well so that's
6:19a great book founders that work to know
6:21what it's like to be a founder and
6:22starting a successful company this is a
6:25great book to know like what traits and
6:28values and principles great companies
6:31have in common right and this book
6:35essentialism this is one of my favorites
6:39and this book tells you how to basically
6:43achieve more with less it explains why
6:46greatness in anything in life comes from
6:49not just adding more things to your
6:51plate like a starving dog at an
6:54all-you-can-eat buffet right it's
6:57actually about removing things from the
6:59plate and just having some core elements
7:03there that you focus on so it's about
7:05achieving more with less and it's about
7:08focus and discipline and really knowing
7:12the few things that are important and
7:14being able to differentiate those from
7:17the vast sea of trivial things that are
7:20not important that drown most people and
7:22occupy them until the end of their days
7:24so those are three great books good two
7:27great founders at work in essentialism
7:30if you read those books it will change
7:33your life it'll make you better at
7:34business it'll make you a bit of human
7:35so that's it for today's video
