0:00hey what's going on everyone in Sam
0:02Evans here and today I wanted to do a
0:04quick video to talk about quarterly
0:07reviews and rethinking everything so
0:10like totally rethinking everything that
0:12you're doing your entire business your
0:14entire life just everything so I haven't
0:17made a blog video in like I think it was
0:20like one week or something because just
0:22last week I was in Tulum and Mexico for
0:25my honeymoon with my wife Ashley and you
0:28know I what we do is we take a break
0:30every 90 days and we take a seven-day
0:33break every 90 days so you know we what
0:36we do is we align those breaks every
0:38quarter so like you know from the the
0:41first break would be like at the end of
0:42March so there's a sprint of like q1
0:45January February March and I create
0:47goals for like that that quarter and
0:49then I sprint through that quarter
0:51achieve those goals and then have a rest
0:53for like seven days and that's the q1
0:55break and then sprint through the next
0:57quarter then the q2 break which is half
0:59the year and right now we're about
1:01halfway through you know 2018 and I just
1:05had my cue to break and oh I think these
1:08breaks are really good and why I think
1:10you should take them as well it's
1:12because they perfectly aligned with like
1:14the seasons and the business quarters
1:16and all of that stuff so you know
1:18business runs in quarters you've got q1
1:20q2 or q3 q4 public companies have
1:22quarterly earnings reports and things
1:24like that and then at the end of the
1:25year you've got your you know end of
1:27year financials and all of that so it
1:28runs perfectly and also you know that's
1:31when the seasons and the equinoxes turn
1:32and all that stuff as well so it's like
1:34perfectly aligned to work in 90 days
1:37have a quick break rethink everything
1:39work of 90 days quick break rethink
1:41everything and to be honest like this
1:44has really helped me a lot and it's
1:46helped our business a lot because it's
1:48enabled us to to really rethink
1:51everything that we're doing and think
1:55what are we on the right path because
1:57what I noticed happens a lot is that you
2:00know you will be working on something
2:03and you're just heads down focused just
2:05focusing on the thing you're working on
2:07just trying to get it done trying to get
2:08it done you get it done and if you never
2:10take your head up
2:11you know if you never escape the K
2:14and if you never rise above the chaos
2:15and look down upon it then you know you
2:18never really know if you're actually
2:20doing the right thing and what I mean by
2:23that is you know Sui can be very busy
2:25and very productive but in doing the
2:28wrong thing right and I noticed a lot of
2:31people make this mistake they're like
2:34they're drinking like eight coffees a
2:35day their heads down focus they think
2:37they're really productive and they're
2:39doing tons of work 12 hours a day but
2:41they're not going in the right direction
2:43and what's more important than really
2:46rapid progress is progress in the right
2:49direction and we can't really see where
2:52we want to go until we rise above the
2:54day-to-day chaos and the only way to
2:56really rise above that and see what's
2:58going on is to get out so you know it
3:01seems kind of counterintuitive
3:02counterproductive because you'd think
3:04the best way to get things done is just
3:06to put your head down and just not stop
3:08working and don't get me wrong that
3:10works really well but you still need to
3:12take breaks every now and then to kind
3:13of make sure you're going in the right
3:15direction
3:15and so these breaks like you're not
3:17actually working like I own these past
3:20seven days last week I didn't do any
3:22work I didn't check my emails I didn't
3:25like talk to my team I didn't really I
3:28didn't do anything I didn't even see in
3:30an email or make a video I mean I did a
3:32couple of like posts on Instagram but
3:35they were just posts relating to like
3:36what I was doing in Mexico not really
3:39posts about business and it's really
3:42important to completely shut off because
3:44if you're if you're still in that
3:45mindset of work and trying to like talk
3:47to your staff and your team and your
3:50customers and all of that then you never
3:52get to fully escape it and and think
3:54about the whole like the big picture and
3:57when you think about the big picture
3:59that's when you come up with some ideas
4:01that might totally change everything and
4:04you never get those ideas unless you
4:06escape and you kind of take some time
4:09off and then you get to see it from a
4:10different perspective and you know the
4:13this video is really about taking breaks
4:15and rethinking everything and so I've
4:17explained the breaks and why you should
4:19take them and all of that but now let's
4:21talk about the rethinking everything
4:23part because a lot of what you know a
4:26lot of what people do over
4:27noticed is they will basically just look
4:31at what they're doing and think how they
4:32can do it better and that's that's good
4:34that's better than just doing it the
4:36same or doing it worse but sometimes you
4:40know instead of just doing it better
4:41sometimes you can do something
4:42completely different sometimes you can
4:44just flip the script and do something
4:47like obscene like that that you would
4:51have never even thought of and it's
4:53often those changes that you know really
4:56make the dramatic jumps like the
4:58exponential leaps for businesses so on
5:01this break that I just had recently you
5:03know I was really reflecting over how
5:05the year wins so far and I was reading a
5:08couple of books too I really enjoy
5:10reading books while I'm on these breaks
5:12because you know as I'm reading the
5:13books I'm learning but also ideas just
5:15pop into my head about like you know I
5:18might read how someone did it in this
5:19business
5:20and I'm like oh I wonder if that could
5:21work for my business like that and you
5:24know it's really awesome to get
5:25different perspectives on things and
5:26read these books on these breaks a lot
5:29of famous like entrepreneurs did this
5:32too like what's his name Bill Gates from
5:35you know Microsoft he this is a very
5:38popular famous story that pretty much
5:40everyone knows but he used to take like
5:42two weeks off around like the Christmas
5:45time end of year time to just read alone
5:48like in a cabin somewhere and just
5:51totally rethink like Microsoft and then
5:54another one who pretty much modeled off
5:57of that was Jeff Bezos so he heard about
6:00Bill Gates doing that and so he decided
6:03well you know I'm gonna do that and he
6:05did that too and you know that's where a
6:07lot of the really good ideas came from
6:09and you know then you know really once a
6:13year I don't really think that's enough
6:14and so I think once every quarter is
6:17pretty much perfect you want to take a
6:19break get out of the chaos and just
6:20rethink everything like and what I mean
6:23by questioning everything rethinking
6:25everything it's like other goals you're
6:27trying to achieve are they actually the
6:29right goals you know you've got a
6:31question everything you can't just
6:33assume that the goals are still the
6:36right goals but you want to question
6:37those are we really trying to achieve
6:39this or
6:40we achieve something much bigger you
6:42know and you also want to get different
6:45perspectives on things from books and
6:47then just play with it like entertaining
6:50just just don't even think it's going to
6:52be real because quite often as soon as
6:55you try to make things real when you are
6:56having a thought experiment you're like
6:58oh that definitely couldn't happen but
6:59you have to just play with some ideas
7:01that are pretty radical and that might
7:03that seem impossible just to think
7:06differently in see like could we really
7:08do it this way instead or maybe we could
7:11do it that way now I'm speaking like in
7:14abstract terms right now it might be
7:15some of you might understand it but to
7:17really help you like really understand
7:20what I'm talking about I'll just give
7:21you some specific real-life examples in
7:23my instance right so one thing I've
7:27always been focused on for me is like
7:29high performance so I've been trying to
7:31squeeze and extract more performance and
7:34more productivity out of myself and
7:36that's been really it's been a fruitful
7:38exercise so far because it's amazing how
7:42much you can squeeze out of yourself
7:43because there's so much waste everywhere
7:45and some examples of how I did that is
7:47you know I start I hired a chef
7:50big big big time-saving one of the best
7:52time savings I've ever done probably one
7:54of the easiest things to do because you
7:56just hire them then it's done and then
7:58you save a huge amount of time and
7:59you're eating healthier which means your
8:01energy is better which means now you
8:03have more time and during that time
8:05you're more focused because you're
8:06healthier so there's an exponential gain
8:08there with very little effort so hiring
8:10a chef was a big one hiring a personal
8:13trainer you know I've got a personal
8:14trainer red who lives in my apartment
8:16with me
8:16I got a live-in trainer that was good
8:19because now I wake up like by this
8:21specific time I go to sleep at a
8:23specific time and my personal trainer
8:24tracks my sleep and you know tracks my
8:27supplements designs the supplements
8:29schedule and everything as well as the
8:30diet and the exercise plan that I do and
8:33by doing you know by doing that by
8:35waking up at a specific time going in
8:37there to specific time that allows you
8:39to really plan and schedule your day
8:41because you know like when it starts and
8:44ends most people have an open-ended
8:45schedule and it's almost impossible to
8:47plan there because it because you don't
8:49even know when you're going to wake up
8:50so how can you plan tomorrow today which
8:52is what you definitely want to
8:53you know if you're not planning tomorrow
8:54today then you're I don't know what
8:58you're doing because that's probably
8:59another big like they don't get you four
9:01times more productivity than what you
9:03currently have you know at the end of
9:05every day you want to plan tomorrow
9:06today break it out into one hour or 30
9:09minute increments and write down exactly
9:10what you were going to do for every hour
9:13of the day from when you wake up to when
9:15you go to sleep I guarantee you if you
9:17just do that you'll get four times as
9:19much productivity out of yourself every
9:20day and while we're on this topic you
9:23know one tool I use that's amazing for
9:26planning everything and you can see it
9:27here is this tool I call my wall map
9:31calendar and it's basically like a
9:33Google Doc where I basically plan out
9:36like my quarters my months my ears my
9:39days my weeks everything and it's an
9:42amazing tool and it's free and I made it
9:45myself and I share it with you so you
9:47can use it totally free as well you
9:49don't even have to opt-in or give your
9:50email address or any of that crap but
9:52you can just you can just click it you
9:54know get it and you start using it for
9:56free right away and if you want to check
9:58out the wall map how it works and if you
9:59want to start using it yourself then
10:01I'll put a link beneath this video in
10:03the resources it'll just say you know
10:05resources mentioned in this video and
10:08I'll put a link to the to this wall map
10:10here so you can go check it out and
10:11start using it yourself this will give
10:13you another like 4x boost in your
10:16productivity so things we've covered so
10:18far we've got taking breaks every 90
10:20days that'll help you a lot then another
10:23one is you know plan tomorrow today it's
10:26a big one before you go to bed at night
10:28plan tomorrow today and then another one
10:30is use the wall map calendar if you do
10:32those three things alone like you're
10:33gonna exponentially improve your
10:36productivity you're gonna extract more
10:38out of yourself and hiring a shift if
10:41you're making more than 10 grand a month
10:42and you don't have a shift then you're
10:45irresponsible because that's just stupid
10:47so get one if you're not making more
10:49than 10 grand a month then you want to
10:52batch your cooking and what I mean by
10:54there is buy all of your groceries on
10:55the weekend preferably from an online
10:58store get them shipped to you and then
11:00cook all of your food for the whole week
11:01store it and then when you need to eat
11:03your meal
11:04each for each mealtime just go grab it
11:06like microwave it eat it BAM done right
11:09dad all save you a lot of time as well
11:11so if you do those things you know
11:13you're you've got you're getting
11:15probably fourth I would say you're
11:17probably getting at least six to ten
11:20times more out of yourself than what you
11:22are right now so a lot of the time you
11:24know we think we need to hire more
11:25people or get more help or but a lot of
11:28the time we can actually just get way
11:29more out of ourselves because most of
11:31our time is wasted and so I've been
11:33through this exercise like trying to
11:35extract more out of myself
11:37for a long time you know I've got like
11:40I've had mine state coaches right now I
11:42work with a forensic psychiatrist who is
11:46you know he he coaches and he helps some
11:50of the best athletes in the world
11:52like football players and things like
11:53that and I found this guy on a
11:55documentary hunted him down and hired
11:57him and so he was even helping me with
11:59like my with forensic psychology like
12:03really helping me identify little blocks
12:05or little biases or tendencies or
12:07heuristics I have that aren't quite
12:09accurate and could be tweaked so that I
12:11can get even more value out of myself
12:12and so I've been through this a lot and
12:15then it you know we've just recently got
12:17to a point where I can still get more
12:20out of myself but it's not that big now
12:23because we're getting into just small
12:25gains now because we've already pushed
12:26it so hard and then I was thinking buy
12:29on this break it's kind of done for me
12:32to try and just get more out of myself I
12:33mean I'm still gonna try to do that but
12:35it would actually be way better if I now
12:38turned my focus to my team and helping
12:41them become really high-performance so
12:44that that was one of the breakthroughs I
12:45had it's that like his perspective shift
12:47so that's what I decided to do while I
12:49was in Mexico and right away we decided
12:52to hold a book club so we're gonna have
12:54a anyone who's in my company that wants
12:57to wants to attend this and wants to
12:59evolve and grow and become really good
13:01then every Saturday at my apartment
13:04at like 10 a.m. I'm gonna hold a book
13:06club where we're going to read a book
13:07every two weeks and discuss it the ideas
13:10and all of that and so that so that's an
13:12idea to try and get try and develop my
13:15entire team and try and get more out of
13:17then instead of just just looking at
13:20getting more out of myself and then I
13:22also thought well what if we you know
13:24the shift things really it saves so much
13:26time and then I look thought about it
13:28but what what about my team so every day
13:31they're like going down to different
13:32stores or whatever and then they're
13:35waiting in line and all of that and then
13:36they're eating this food like that and
13:38it's really unproductive it's not a very
13:40good use of their time so I thought what
13:43if we just what if the chef cooked for
13:45my my team and me like you know why why
13:49don't we use that same discovery there
13:51and so we thought we'll let's do that
13:53too then I thought what about like going
13:55to the gym and personal training and
13:57then I thought well yeah maybe like read
13:59my personal trainer he could kind of
14:01become like a fitness coach for kind of
14:04our whole team kind of help making sure
14:06everyone in our team is going to the
14:08German exercising and watching this
14:10sleep and all of that stuff and in
14:12watching their diet and all of that and
14:14then making sure they're reading and
14:16learning and all of that stuff so that
14:19was a good perspective shift it was like
14:20what I did to myself really helped me
14:23get way more performance like more than
14:26ten times performance out of myself so
14:28why don't we get imagine ten times
14:30performance settle at fifty people that
14:32is a huge amount and so that was one you
14:35know that's just an example of one thing
14:37that I didn't think of normally because
14:39I was in the chaos of the day-to-day but
14:41then when I rise tube of it and went on
14:43a break and kind of rethought everything
14:45perspective shift boom and you know
14:47that's that's just a perfect example and
14:49for a lot of people you know if you've
14:52got a team then imagine if you became
14:56high performance with them at the same
14:57time you really want an entire team full
15:00of Michael Jordan's either you just
15:02don't want to have a leader that's you
15:04know really high performance and then
15:05have other people who want to be high
15:07performance but but aren't right so
15:10that's a perfect example and another one
15:14is like you know me I would work from
15:18home a lot like you probably noticed
15:20that pretty much all of my videos are of
15:23me working
15:23at home all right and that's because
15:26I've had to create a lot of content and
15:28everything and that requires pretty much
15:31silence and me too just kids down focus
15:33on one thing but I thought you know that
15:35is not really going to help me build the
15:38team as high as they could go and so I
15:41thought well you know we I can't
15:43continue really to do this I mean the
15:44team's going well by themselves but with
15:47the general manager and the structure
15:49I've got there but you never want to be
15:52satisfied with good you don't even want
15:55to be satisfied with great you know a
15:57lot of the time people think oh if I'm
15:59just meeting the target so if I'm just
16:01doing the job this is great and most
16:04people they only fire people if they
16:06don't do the job and they fail but that
16:09gets low standards you know great good
16:12isn't good enough great isn't good
16:14enough you have to be exceptional you
16:17know it really made me think like who in
16:19my company do like do I admire and look
16:23up to and really you shouldn't have
16:26anyone in your company that you don't
16:27admire or look up to and you really need
16:31to cultivate a culture in a team that is
16:34just like excellent you should admire
16:36everyone everyone should be genius level
16:38everyone should be high performance
16:40everyone should be constantly striving
16:42for more and I realized that you know I
16:45need to be in there to help everyone you
16:48know really cultivate this culture and
16:50lift the standards and really you know
16:52push everyone to the moon and so I
16:55decided well I'm gonna have to create a
16:57little a little facility at my office
17:00where I can record the content there
17:02because you know my reasoning for not
17:04going and doing it there is because
17:05there's no real quiet place where I can
17:07go and record this content but then I
17:09thought you know that's just stupid Sam
17:10you can just you could just put some
17:12sound deadening stuff somewhere and be
17:13able to do it there and then you know in
17:15between creating the videos and the
17:17content and whatnot
17:18you could easily you know spend some
17:19time with the team and help grow them so
17:22there was another thing I you know I
17:23thought about and so before the break
17:26and q1 and q2 I was really just looking
17:28at myself and how I could squeeze more
17:31out of me and I was and that was going
17:33well and my team was going great but
17:35then I thought what if we caught
17:38all of what if we squeezed that
17:40high-performance out of everybody that
17:42would be that would be huge way more
17:45than any amount of performance gain I
17:47could possibly squeeze out of myself and
17:49that was a that was a big perspective
17:51shift and this is the power of taking
17:53breaks and rethinking everything because
17:56if I didn't take that break and I just
17:57stayed heads down focused bam bam bam
17:59working on everything I would have made
18:01like progress but it wouldn't have been
18:04exponential progress but by taking that
18:06break rising above the chaos rethinking
18:09everything at a perspective shift and
18:11that will create the exponential jump
18:13and entrepreneurs often forget this you
18:16know they they just stay heads down
18:17focused on the thing but they don't ever
18:21step back and see the bigger picture and
18:23think how it could be done better and
18:25that's really important because you
18:28don't build anything great and you don't
18:30change the world by just making like
18:33heads down progress on a in a linear way
18:36you need exponential jumps and the
18:39exponential jumps are perspective shifts
18:41and the perspective shifts only come
18:43when you take a break and you step back
18:46from the chaos rise above it look down
18:48on it and rethink everything so that's
18:52basically my message for this video you
18:54know if you're burnt out and you're just
18:56smashing emails and sales calls and all
18:59of in facebook posts and all of this day
19:01to day then you're probably stuck in the
19:03weeds you know it's important to do
19:06these things but they're not going to
