0:06all right so I know there's a lot of
0:09factors but if you had to choose the one
0:10thing that determines if a person X is
0:13successful or if they're not successful
0:15or let's say like greatly successful
0:16like world class like everyone knows
0:19that that person is successful with that
0:22what would that one factor be if it had
0:24to be one I've thought a lot about this
0:27because I've wanted to know what that
0:30thing is myself so that I can get better
0:33and it's also fascinated me because you
0:37know with our online training programs
0:38at consoling calm we help people start
0:41consulting businesses and become
0:43successful and it's always been one of
0:46the things I've been looking at among
0:48all the students in there like the
0:50people who make six figures and seven
0:52figures like what is it about them what
0:54are they smarter are they like are they
0:58more educated do they work harder do
1:00they wake up early like you know do they
1:02read a lot like what things do they have
1:05in common it's always fascinated me and
1:07a lot of the time I think I've found the
1:10thing and then it turns out that I
1:12haven't but recently I've observed there
1:15you know there's one thing that's true
1:18in every single instance and I learned
1:20this from watching like all these
1:23documentaries from all of these
1:24different people in all different
1:25industries and you know from like from
1:29athletes like Usain Bolt and Michael
1:33Phelps and Michael Jordan and you know
1:35all the different athletes and all their
1:36different fields then like musicians
1:38like Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin and
1:42then even like David Bowie in Michael
1:44Jackson and then into business people as
1:47well and I just looked like across the
1:49board and even movie directors and stuff
1:51like what is the thing that makes people
1:53really good at stuff and then and the
1:56people in my programs as well and you
1:59know I think the one thing that it is is
2:02like pure love and obsession for what
2:08they do like and I don't mean they just
2:10like it I mean there
2:12they're probably to the point that it's
2:14that most people would argue that it's
2:16bad and disturbing and all of this but
2:18they they love it so much that they
2:21would give themself for it
2:23like they dear like infatuated by
2:26obsessed it's the thing they think about
2:28from the minute they wake up in the
2:29morning to when they go to sleep then
2:31they'll be dreaming about it too and
2:32like they will sacrifice anything to
2:36keep like feeding that love with the
2:39thing and that's really what it is and
2:43then like how one thing really stuck out
2:45to me when I watched one of Michael
2:47Jordan's documentaries they they asked
2:50him at the beginning it was like the
2:51first scene and they were like what's
2:53the secret to being the best basketball
2:55player in the world and he goes well
2:57it'sit's it's simple the secret is to
3:00fall in love with the game once you do
3:03that you're no longer training you no
3:04longer like competing you're no longer
3:07doing any of this because all you you've
3:09just you just love it it's what you do
3:11by default and once you once you fall in
3:14love with something it's very easy to
3:16become the best in the world edit so
3:19there really is the thing that I've
3:22noticed that's true across all all
3:25instances mmm
3:26now do you think that's something that
3:28these people were born with or even
3:29yourself or our students or is it
3:32something that develops over time as far
3:35as them following the love in the game
3:36because a lot of people come in and
3:37they're like I don't really know if I
3:39like anything like nothing is too too
3:41good or too bad I'm you know I'm
3:43interested in just a lot of different
3:44paths well no one's born with a love for
3:47like an actual field like basketball
3:50because it's impossible you you know
3:53you're not born like with with anything
3:55you you learn if her things like nurture
3:58not what you were born with that's like
4:02always a myth like oh he was born with
4:04it
4:04you know the might these even a Michael
4:06Jordan aired which it's like maybe you
4:08thought basketball was a god-given gift
4:10and not something I work for every
4:12single day of my life right so he even
4:14says it there like it's a myth usually
4:16what you know people who aren't
4:18successful just say to kind of make
4:20themselves feel better about not being
4:21good at anything that people are born
4:23with it and they're not
4:24with it so that's why mm-hmm even though
4:27the person that takes their whole life
4:29to get good at it
4:29so it's definitely not the born thing
4:32but I do understand like than not not
4:36being interested in anything or not
4:38being obsessed with anything and the
4:41truth is is that they're probably just
4:42not obsessed with anything which they
4:46think can become a business because
4:49every person is obsessed with something
4:51like if I think back to what I did
4:54even before like business I was always I
4:58always had one thing which was like my
5:00hobby so that might have been you know
5:03skateboarding or BMX biking or like
5:07playing like counter-strike you know and
5:12these were like my obsessions at
5:13different phases of my life and then
5:15came like you know drinking beers and
5:17going out to parties and you know then I
5:21did rock climbing and then you know
5:23there was all these different like
5:24phases I went through and those were
5:26things that you know if I had some spare
5:28time I'd be thinking about that or doing
5:30it hmm and the thing the truth is is
5:34that people are interested in things
5:35they just don't see how that thing can
5:38become a business and maybe it can't but
5:41it's to really learn what you're
5:43interested in right now the easiest
5:46thing to do is like just think what do
5:50you do when you've got some spare time
5:53like what do you do like if you've got
5:55some spare time in the evening or
5:56whatever what's what do you kind of
5:58default to doing and another good thing
6:01to to look at these are clues like ways
6:05which you can clues which give away what
6:08you're interested in look at the friends
6:10which you've got in the friends which
6:11you're closest to and then think what
6:14are the attributes that make you friends
6:17like what things do share in common and
6:19then look at the conversations you have
6:21with your friends what things are you
6:23discussing and then look at the things
6:25you post on your Facebook page
6:26what are they off I mean these clues
6:29everywhere but I think one of the
6:31coolest giveaways which someone said
6:33once and I was like well that's true is
6:35look at your youtube search
6:38seriously because YouTube just saves
6:41everything we've a search for write all
6:43the terms and everything so if you just
6:45go into YouTube and you look at your
6:46search history you'll see the things
6:48that you're searching for and these are
6:51things which are all going to be clues
6:52into like what you're interested in and
6:55then so I don't believe that people
6:58aren't interested in anything I mean the
7:00only way to really achieve there is to
7:02be dead or unconscious but they're just
7:05not seeing how it might be related to
7:08business and so that's that's the first
7:11way to figure out what am I actually
7:12interested in and then you can think
7:15well how could I is there any way I
7:17could kind of you know turn my interest
7:19into a business as well and then that'll
7:21start getting you thinking hmm like even
7:24if you're into partying like you could
7:25become like you could start having
7:27parties right you know what I mean like
7:29it everything can become a business they
7:32only like the thing that really
7:34determines whether something's going to
7:36be really a good business or not is how
7:38obsessed the person is with it mmm
7:41because if they're more obsessed with it
7:42than the average person then they're
7:43gonna beat the average person mm-hmm so
7:46if they're more obsessed do you do you
7:48find that because you went through those
7:50those areas of obsession in your life
7:53what what makes someone fall out of
7:55obsession or have you determined that or
7:57have you seen anyone who was really on
7:59fire for certain paths then all of a
8:01sudden they're like you know it ended up
8:02not being what I wanted but they had
8:04these tendencies of like jumping from
8:06obsession of to obsession versus someone
8:09who say like maybe even like Steve Jobs
8:13even though he had that stand away from
8:14Apple like he for most of his life was
8:17obsessed with that one vision of what he
8:21was trying to achieve at Apple even
8:23though most of his life because he was
8:24like 20-something before he even started
8:27on on a mobile he would have still had
8:29all of these spaces when he was growing
8:30up right okay so when I was talking
8:32about skateboarding and counter-strike
8:34and all that's when I was like like
8:35twelve fifteen you know different ages
8:40are then my obsession really at like
8:43twenty one became with like business so
8:46it was a broad obsession hmm and then
8:49what changed in iterated inside
8:51that was the type of business in the
8:53niche and what I was selling and what I
8:55was good at and how I actually did
8:57business hmm
8:59so business overall is like an obsession
9:01but then within that obsession you've
9:03got other obsessions you know what I
9:04mean
9:04got it and you know if someone's really
9:08really interested and say like partying
9:10or something then they've got to ask
9:12themself if they're also interested in
9:14like in business at all you know you
9:16have to have a desire to to make money
9:18and to put a lot of effort into a
9:21business to make it work but you also
9:23need to have a desire and an interest in
9:25the nature of your business know I
9:28learned that lesson when I built this
9:30property inspection app called snap
9:32inspect back it was one of my first
9:36businesses but I went to the market and
9:39I looked for needs and I found that they
9:41needed this property inspection app and
9:43then I matched the need with the
9:45software and it was a success the
9:47company worked but I was not obsessed
9:49with property managers in the property
9:52management field one I didn't know much
9:54about it
9:55- I definitely didn't think about it or
9:57dream about it it wasn't it wasn't an
10:00obsession so I had the obsession of
10:03business but the nature of my business
10:05wasn't something I was obsessed with so
10:08naturally that led to me changing and
10:10going more into consulting which was
10:12something that I was more way more
10:15interested in within the field of
10:17business that makes sense
10:19ya know that does make sense because
10:23yeah the money is just a byproduct I'm
10:25sure it was good to get the money if the
10:27business was successful but if you truly
10:28didn't love it at some point it just
10:30it's never enough like you know if you
10:36don't like money at all then there's no
10:38point of being in business you just do
10:39it as a hobby right mm-hm so you got to
10:41like the money and the thing you you
10:44know you can it's not like a binary
10:46state thing you don't just like one or
10:48the other you got to like both right so
10:52and even now as our business grows
10:54there's a lot more things that we're
10:55doing now that we weren't doing last
10:57year or the year before or like or even
10:59you personally were doing before so how
11:01do you keep that same and drive and fire
11:04the company grows like is there are
11:06certain jobs that you've learned to
11:08outsource that you know I definitely
11:09don't want to do that because if I do
11:11you know I I'm gonna fall out and love
11:14with the whole business thing like how
11:15do you keep yourself focused and
11:17obsessed and really loving what you do
11:19every day well no one ever loves
11:22anything every day either that never
11:26happens so you know every a good thing
11:29to learn is that there's gonna be cycles
11:31but you're not gonna love it and then
11:33you're going to love it like the key is
11:35that you just love it on average mmm
11:37because you're always going to have days
11:39everyone has their you might even have
11:40some weeks and things and you're always
11:42going to have to do things you don't
11:43like to do and like if I think just over
11:46the past two weeks you know I've had to
11:48get really in the trenches in my company
11:50with all of the financials and
11:52everything because we restructured a
11:54whole bunch of stuff so I've just been
11:55living in Excel in talking to
11:57accountants and attorneys and things for
12:00like two weeks and that is not like
12:03something I really love but it's just
12:05something which I have to do at this
12:07particular stage to keep moving and
12:09that's fine I understand that it's like
12:12if you ever if you have a wife and she
12:14asks you to like you know do something
12:16and you don't like that you don't think
12:19how this wife isn't for me anymore like
12:22the business asks you to do things that
12:24you don't want to do but provided you
12:26love it on average it works right so
12:33it's it's also good to learn the things
12:35you like and you don't like because you
12:39can over time you can naturally start
12:41doing less of what you don't like mm-hmm
12:44but it's it's silly to look at you know
12:47to look at something and think that
12:48you're going to love it every day in
12:50every week because you know even like
12:56you know even if you ask even if you
12:58watch like Michael Jordan documentaries
13:00or something I keep coming back to him
13:01because he's like everyone knows he's
13:03the greatest of all time at like
13:05basketball mm-hmm so he's a really good
13:06example of this and you know he he loved
13:11basketball and he loved winning at
13:13basketball but in order to do that he
13:15had to train it
13:16tremely hard and training that hard is
13:20agonizing and he and you don't like it
13:23but you have to go through that pain in
13:25order to achieve the love mmm you know I
13:28mean so he he put himself in situations
13:30which he absolutely hated in order to
13:34win at the thing which he loved do you
13:37see how that works I do yeah
13:39and then at the end like his coach when
13:41he finally retired in his when he talked
13:43to his coach he said if I ever see you
13:45around my house again I'm gonna shoot
13:47her it's a like a famous line which he
13:50said to one of his coaches which is just
13:52like shows you like you know when he was
13:55around like he was always like on edge
13:57and he knew it was gonna be hard and
13:59everything but he he put himself through
14:01that pain to achieve what he wanted to
14:04achieve and a business is very much like
14:06that like it's like training at the gym
14:09on a lot of days you know you've got to
14:11put yourself through pressure and
14:12through stress and all of that to to
14:15achieve the thing which you love
14:18it is there's not a one-sided thing
14:20which you're always going to love it it
14:22it goes back between the two mm-hmm so
14:25kind of going off of that because we
14:27talked about Jordan obviously he had a
14:28bunch of coaches he was the best ever do
14:30you think someone needs a coach in order
14:32to be world-class really great I think
14:36they're gonna have lots of coaches like
14:40you at different part different stages
14:44of your life you know different you're
14:46going to come across different things
14:47that that teach you and it doesn't
14:51always have to be a person sometimes it
14:53can be like a philosophy or something
14:55like that so if you look at Jordan he
14:58like heads you know Phil Jackson taught
15:02him a lot and then also Zen like Zen
15:06Buddhism taught him a lot their whole
15:08philosophy which he looked into and
15:11became a good teacher of hers but then
15:13he had like other coaches which he used
15:15for like extra performance in the gym so
15:19he found he sought out other coaches and
15:21he did training outside of the normal
15:22team training
15:24get an edge and then he brought in
15:26people which help them with diets and
15:28all sorts so it's you know you all what
15:32you're always going to have teachers
15:33because there's the only way you can get
15:34better and they change over time but
15:38it's I think it's always important to
15:40have one at least one thing which is
15:42you're all one person who is your
15:44teacher at all stages otherwise you've
15:46got nothing to really look up to or
15:48learn so the kind of the ideal scenario
15:52is is some sort of like having the self
15:56motivation to like finding like what
15:59you're obsessed about finding what
16:00you're on this earth to do and then also
16:02the accountability of having a coach in
16:05order to like kind of get to that next
16:06level where it always times just have a
16:08philosophy or something like that so the
16:10coach can be a distant like it can be
16:13like an author alright so like let's say
16:16this one person is really inspiring you
16:20right now like it could even be someone
16:21like Elon Matz and you didn't even meet
16:24him probably not going to meet him
16:25probably not gonna be able to email him
16:27he's not gonna be holding you
16:28accountable mm-hmm but you can read his
16:30books you can watch his videos and he is
16:33being your teacher and your coach
16:35through those vehicles right so people
16:38often think I need a coach that's
16:40literally coaching me like a teacher can
16:44anything can be your teacher mm-hmm got
16:47it and how do you how do you is it good
16:50to have a mix of both throughout your
16:51life or you know people or yourself how
16:55do you prefer do you prefer to have
16:56someone that you talked to over the
16:58phone someone just philosophies books
17:01that you read or people that are
17:04actually more one-on-one and a
17:06relationship or a mix of all it's
17:10honestly a mix it's just what whatever
17:12you can get like sometimes in some
17:14fields you're not going to be able to
17:15get like a one-on-one person that's
17:17there just gonna be way out of reach and
17:20it makes more sense to have somebody
17:22just by you know just learning through
17:25their materials in their work and things
17:27like that then it is to bring someone in
17:29I mean you've always just got to do a
17:32like way off of like pros and cons like
17:36a lot of the time if you get someone in
17:37sure you've got them there watching you
17:40and all of that stuff but you know
17:42they're they're often not going to have
17:44the knowledge that's as good as you
17:47might get from like someone in a book
17:48because that person might be the best in
17:50the world
17:50mmm so you've got to decide what's more
17:52important having the actual
17:54accountability and all of that or having
17:57the depth of knowledge and expertise
