0:00welcome back to new to medical device
0:03sales i
0:04am your host jacob mclaughlin and today
0:07i have a very special guest today i have
0:11kyra hurley who is a recent college
0:14graduate who also attended
0:16medical sales college and just broke
0:18into medical device sales
0:20with one of the largest medical device
0:23companies in the entire world
0:25and in one of the busiest markets so
0:28kira welcome to the show thank you so
0:31much for having me on
0:32yes thank you for taking time i know
0:34your life is crazy i know we were just
0:37talking for everyone who's listening
0:39uh her mornings are starting around 4 4
0:4230 in the morning
0:43um and then sometimes doesn't get home
0:45till 7 so i really appreciate you just
0:46taking the time to
0:48to join us and and share your insight of
0:51course i got home early today at like
0:53five so that was super exciting
0:55look at that now you're living the dream
0:58love it absolutely so kara i always just
1:02you know started out with everybody
1:04would love to just get a little
1:05introduction from you uh and then kind
1:08of go from there
1:10so for everyone listening i graduated
1:12this past may of 2020
1:14in the pandemic from college and when i
1:17started my college career in 2016 i
1:19definitely
1:20would have never pictured myself doing
1:22what i'm doing today
1:23um mostly because i just didn't even
1:26really know a career like this existed
1:28and i really started off in the health
1:30sciences as a biology major
1:32i always felt drawn towards medicine but
1:34i never really knew exactly what i
1:36wanted to do where i wanted to fit
1:38um throughout college i did a lot of
1:39shadowing with like you know physicians
1:41physicians assistants oral surgeons and
1:44while i really loved being in that
1:45clinical environment
1:46it felt like something was kind of still
1:48missing at this time um
1:50i began to you know take some business
1:52classes i also felt
1:53really drawn towards them like trying to
1:55be in sales maybe entrepreneurship
1:57but it really wasn't until i started
1:59talking to my stepdad who works in
2:00pharma
2:01um where i got the idea to work in
2:03medical device sales he was telling me
2:05you know you don't want to be in pharma
2:06i couldn't see you there
2:07but i could definitely see you in med
2:09device so after this
2:11i definitely became really excited about
2:12the industry because i you know started
2:14doing some research and i felt like it
2:15would kind of blend that whole
2:16you know love for the clinical but also
2:18love for sales into one
2:20i love that i love that um i didn't know
2:22your dad was her stepdad was
2:24in pharmaceuticals yes yes he is um
2:27been in pharma like forever um worked
2:30for you know some big companies
2:32um he's down in florida now but yeah he
2:34loves it no way so i can
2:36for the listeners out there can you give
2:38the reasons why you personally decided
2:40uh not pharmaceuticals and why you did
2:43medical device sales because this is a
2:44common question that
2:46i get asked should i go pharma should i
2:47go med device this was something i
2:49uh question as well and i have my own
2:51answers but i would love to hear why you
2:52decided to go medical device route
2:54um so i feel like it really wasn't my
2:57option it was more like my stepdad being
2:59like
3:00no you wouldn't like pharma and me being
3:01like okay i trust you
3:03um but now looking back on it i don't
3:05think i would have liked pharma just
3:06because you really don't get that same
3:08like or clinical environment as you do
3:10with surgical sales which is what i do
3:12um i really like like being around
3:15people
3:16you know being in that or is something
3:18i've always wanted to do and i think
3:19with
3:19pharma the only other thing is you're
3:22really only having conversations with
3:24the doctors you're not
3:25in the or building relationships with
3:27them working with eor staff
3:29um which i find really interesting um so
3:31i mean i would definitely
3:32not do pharma at this point i love med
3:34devices
3:35that it's the coolest industry ever i'm
3:38super happy
3:39no i'm with you and just for the
3:41listeners out there you know
3:42i've talked to a lot of people who were
3:44in pharmaceuticals and then they broke
3:46into medical device
3:47if you don't know that there is a kind
3:49of a stigma in the medical device world
3:51um i know managers that won't even hire
3:54someone that's been pharmaceutical
3:55because
3:56there's sometimes the stigma of they're
3:57lazy they don't know how to sell like
4:00um i'm not saying that's going to happen
4:02but i have heard of managers who
4:04have interviewed up contestants or uh
4:07people and they found out they were in
4:08pharmaceuticals and then they just
4:10flipped the switch and then grilled them
4:12and then it got way harder
4:14um i actually i've heard the same thing
4:16even from my stepdad he told me
4:18you know when he first broke into the
4:19industry he had thought about you know
4:21maybe doing that device and him and a
4:23lot of his colleagues the same thing you
4:25would apply to a job and
4:26the first thing he would say is pharma
4:27sales need not apply
4:29so i mean that's definitely something to
4:31look into i mean
4:32i have heard other things like oh go
4:34into pharma then med device but
4:35um at this point i feel like if you're
4:38going to want to go into med device i'd
4:39probably stick with something more
4:40towards doing b2b
4:42before rather than doing pharma trying
4:44to do that and i will say uh to the reps
4:45that were in pharmaceutical they always
4:47did tell me
4:48hey if you're gonna go on pharma it's
4:50two years now like you can't stay longer
4:52than two years because then you would
4:54quote unquote get the habits and it goes
4:56down there you know so
4:57um just for you guys everybody listening
4:59that is kind of the stigma
5:01out there i'm not saying i agree with it
5:03i know people that are in pharma and
5:04they work really hard
5:05uh but one other thing i want to touch
5:07on in the pharmaceutical world
5:08is i talked to a rep where he was a
5:10pharmaceutical rep and like you said you
5:12don't make that relationship with that
5:13doctor he's like i worked with a doctor
5:14for two years
5:16i stopped at your office they used our
5:17product and he's like i then landed a
5:20medical device comfort device job and i
5:22was his
5:23new med device uh rep and he didn't even
5:26know who i was
5:27because even though i was the
5:28pharmaceutical rep they don't really
5:30care they're just like
5:31okay drop off your stuff there's that
5:32guy and go it wasn't until he's like i'm
5:35in medical device where he's like i'm
5:36actually
5:37helping in the surgery i'm adding value
5:39um that
5:40that it came into that so i just wanted
5:42to touch on that for everyone listening
5:43again not saying that pharmaceutical is
5:45not a
5:45a good world um it's just it's a
5:48different world
5:48than a medical device absolutely so kira
5:52now we touched on medical sales college
5:56um everyone who's listened uh i did make
5:58a video of
5:59my opinion on medical sales college but
6:02i would actually like to get someone's
6:03opinion who's been through medical sales
6:05college so can you kind of tell us
6:07about your experience at medical sales
6:09college what it was
6:10like um and then at the end if you feel
6:12like you know
6:13if someone should look at it or maybe
6:15not yeah
6:16absolutely um so i think you know
6:20i really didn't know or decide i wanted
6:22to go into
6:23med device until maybe my last like
6:25eight months of college it was like you
6:27know
6:28things were wrapping up i was doing
6:29internships and i was like either gonna
6:31apply to pa school
6:33gonna apply to dental school or i just
6:35didn't know what i was gonna do
6:36and then i kind of found medical device
6:38and i was like okay like but i have no
6:40experience
6:41how am i gonna get into this field what
6:43can i do to make myself stand out
6:45and i just was doing research all online
6:48trying to figure out what can i do what
6:50can i do
6:51and um i found
6:54i found the medical sales college
6:56basically um a lot of the advice
6:58previously
6:59that i got before that was okay you have
7:01to work in b2b sales for two to four
7:03years and i just like didn't believe
7:05that was the only option i was like
7:06there's something i can do
7:07and i'm gonna get into this field so
7:10after i found
7:11msc um i felt like as a young college
7:13graduate it would be a great option for
7:15me um
7:16they have one program that is the one i
7:18did is the eight week online course
7:20in orthopedic biologics and regenerative
7:22medicine i had no idea what this meant
7:25going into it i was like i have no idea
7:26what orthopedic biologics is
7:28i don't know anything about the industry
7:31but in my head i'm like okay
7:32i'm a college you know senior i'm taking
7:3621 credits
7:37and i'm gonna do this eight week online
7:39course like this is gonna help me stand
7:41out
7:41i wanna show people that i'm willing to
7:43work hard i want to show people that i'm
7:44committed
7:45and i really like that was my initial
7:47thoughts going into it like more than
7:49anything i don't even care what i learn
7:51at first i just want to
7:52work hard and have an idea of what i'm
7:54getting myself into because i mean i
7:56could have done this course and been
7:57like i hate my device i don't want to do
7:59it
7:59but i really wanted to kind of get an
8:01idea before i went into it
8:03i will say i think it helped me more so
8:06just learn about the industry more than
8:07anything you know i was able to work
8:10network with
8:11so many people who have worked in med
8:13device i'd say most people that
8:15work there have been in med device you
8:17know a lot of people have worked for top
8:19companies
8:20so going into interviews it was so
8:22helpful because i'd be like oh
8:23hey i know this person was my you know
8:26mentor
8:27and they worked for whatever and i'm
8:29interviewing with them what advice do
8:30you have
8:31you know what are good ways to interview
8:32for this company so it was like almost
8:34like a short list to get networking
8:36um and i mean they had a lot of great
8:39tools to be
8:40successful my thing i will say is
8:43um i do just from things i've heard
8:46things you read on the internet i do
8:47think some people go into msc
8:49and think okay i'm just gonna get a job
8:51right after college i'm just gonna
8:53do this program and they're just gonna
8:54hand me a job msc isn't like that you
8:57can talk to any of the people that work
8:59there
8:59they say if you want to get a job you
9:01have to go out and network for it you
9:02know we will help you if you need help
9:04if you need interview tips
9:05you know we'll give you the tools to be
9:07successful but if you're not somebody
9:08who's going to work for it you're not
9:10going to get the job
9:11and ultimately i mean i didn't think
9:13that just going to school was
9:14this like school was going to give me a
9:15job regardless but
9:17i think it gave me a really good
9:19opportunity to be successful when i was
9:21interviewing
9:22so i will say i do think the program i
9:24did was worth it for me
9:26but i mean that may have just been under
9:28my conditions of you know i'm a college
9:30senior i'm taking
9:31you know this eight week online course
9:33while i'm at school it was definitely
9:35the
9:35less expensive option which was what i
9:37was going for
9:38yeah um so just put me in a really good
9:41position
9:42like to get into the industry i really
9:44don't know about successes of other
9:45people
9:46um but it did help me i think at least a
9:50little bit
9:50i love that yeah no and i always just
9:52love having a different people's point
9:54of views and like you said
9:55at the end of the day it gave you an
9:57understanding
9:58um you know the point i always would
10:00point out you know
10:01being someone who had no sales
10:03experience broke in as a full-line sales
10:05rep
10:05and got told i should go to b2b sales or
10:08medical sales college and i was like you
10:10i'm like
10:11no way i'm not wasting my time with
10:13either of those or my money
10:14um it was always just like the thing
10:15like you said i think the biggest thing
10:17is it gives you an understanding
10:19of the uh field that you're about to get
10:21into but that's where i always was
10:23pushing like
10:24i'm a money savvy person i'm like well
10:25i'll just reach out to people for free
10:27on linkedin
10:28and find that as well i mean like you
10:30said connections i will
10:32say that has been one thing with
10:33managers kind of like we talked about
10:34primary school
10:35talking with managers who are hiring
10:37sometimes uh
10:38medical sales college kids can get
10:40sometimes a bad rap for the fact of
10:42they feel that they deserve a job hey i
10:45went i paid
10:4614 000 to go in person or whatever it is
10:49um
10:50but i paid this money to learn this 12
10:52weeks i deserve a job
10:53and like and like you just said they're
10:56not going to hand you a job every single
10:58person that i've talked to in medical
10:59sales
11:00college that did get a job it was
11:01because they were already networking it
11:03was they did what you did
11:04they were already doing everything they
11:06needed to and then it's kind of like hey
11:07but i also have an
11:08understanding from here compared to i do
11:10know a lot of
11:12people who go into it thinking like hey
11:14they're just gonna
11:16hand me the book of who to apply for and
11:18here it comes and and that is not the
11:19case
11:20so if that is what you're thinking
11:21please save your money um and
11:23don't do that but i love getting your
11:25someone's
11:26first world experience who had success
11:28with it as well
11:29absolutely but yeah you touched on that
11:31perfect point it's like you
11:33don't deserve anything in this life you
11:35gotta work for any everything you have
11:37so honestly you know you can go to msc
11:40and i think you can make success out of
11:42it but the thing is you have to put in
11:43the work you have to be willing to get
11:44the good grades
11:45you know i studied so much so i did
11:48really well in the class they give like
11:49grade point averages
11:50yeah yeah so i did so i mean
11:53it takes work to be successful you have
11:56to do a lot of projects you learn about
11:58you know feature benefit values
12:01um so it definitely gave me a good
12:02concept going into interviews
12:04but i mean everything is what you work
12:07for so
12:07love that i would say you know no i love
12:10that and like you said that is something
12:12i've told everybody that's what's made
12:13my life way easier
12:15um i don't really feel like i deserve
12:17anything
12:18you know i have to work for everything
12:20and and the people that i find that are
12:21successful like yourself breaking in
12:23they feel the same way when you don't
12:24walk in with that chip on the shoulder
12:26you're like hey i'm coming here to earn
12:27it
12:28like it's only up from here you know so
12:30i love that you made that uh point so
12:32thank you for
12:32making that now going into it can you
12:35kind of tell us
12:37how you broke in so i know you went to
12:39medical sales college kind of can you
12:40tell us the interview process how many
12:41did you
12:42apply with um and kind of what did the
12:44interview process look
12:45for i i know with applying i told people
12:48i applied to a million
12:49i interviewed with probably 10 to 15 i
12:52don't know the exact number but i didn't
12:53know what the process looked like for
12:54yourself
12:55um and kind of how you broke in oh my
12:58god i can't even tell you how many jobs
13:00i applied to
13:01it's crazy um i started applying to jobs
13:06even before i went to msc
13:07so it was january of
13:11oh my god 20 2019 no
13:142020 yeah yeah the best the best year
13:17ever
13:18yeah but this is the start of the best
13:20year ever was when i
13:23started applying to jobs um i started
13:26interviewing back then
13:27i probably had five to six
13:30interviews with different companies um
13:33up until covid
13:34lovely koben um so kobe hit
13:37and i i was like in the running for
13:40for jobs and i mean this was during msc
13:43i'm like i'm gonna graduate with a
13:44position i'll be set
13:46then covet hits and she throws
13:49everything
13:49like off the rails i was like thank you
13:52miss rona
13:53um really nothing went as expected after
13:56that
13:56um all i kept doing like
14:00literally all summer and like all
14:01through after graduation was
14:03network like i would just message people
14:06on linkedin
14:07constantly and i think you know very
14:09similar to you i just
14:10tried to message and connect with as
14:12many people as possible but for me
14:14networking is like not my strong suit
14:16like
14:16i feel so uncomfortable sometimes like
14:19sending people messages
14:20it's like you know i don't know what to
14:21say i feel like there's kind of
14:23awkwardness like do people want to talk
14:25to
14:25me but i really do think a lot of those
14:28people that you know did reach back out
14:30to me did
14:31have conversations with me really helped
14:33me have a good contact in the field
14:36and honestly like that is what you need
14:38to get first round interviews you need a
14:40good
14:40contact in the field of somebody who's
14:42willing to fight for you just a little
14:44bit just to put your name in and say hey
14:47this girl this guy's great i love them
14:49like you know just give them just give
14:51them one chance
14:52that's all i need is one interview
14:54please
14:55so do all the networking you can find
14:58someone who believes in you and if it's
15:00just one person
15:01like i mean use that to your advantage
15:03like just learn from as many people as
15:05possible that's
15:06all you can really do you just need one
15:08job offer to get the job
15:09just one i love that no that's
15:12that's very well said and the thing i
15:14think you do a great job you know
15:16uh vale who we just had on the interview
15:19or the podcast last week we were talking
15:21about you coming on and
15:22and his comment was just about how
15:24sincere you are how genuine you are
15:26and i think that's something just for
15:27the listeners out there you know we've
15:29we've touched on this before but like
15:31you got to come with a genuine heart
15:33when you when you're reaching out even
15:34in your conversation when you're
15:35reaching out to people networking
15:37you got to be genuine about it because
15:38there's too many people even myself i'll
15:40get messages
15:41where they're just looking what they can
15:43get from you and when you get a message
15:45like that
15:46there's nothing faster to be like no
15:47thanks or don't even respond
15:49so i think that's something you do a
15:51great job at is just being super genuine
15:53and like
15:53you know as as you guys are watching
15:55this easy to talk to fun to talk to good
15:58energy um these are all tips that you
16:00guys can take in when you're having
16:01conversations and
16:03um when you're when you're networking
16:04because like like she said for me
16:06networking's easy i don't care what
16:08anybody thinks about me and i love to
16:10talk
16:10um so i'm like the exact opposite so i
16:13think you do a great job of being able
16:15to
16:16use your strengths to reach out and land
16:18your job with the
16:19one of the largest medical device
16:20companies in the world yeah
16:22guys you just gotta be you know
16:24comfortable with being uncomfortable
16:26like i feel awkward all day long but you
16:28don't have to get over it
16:29i love that and that's i think we should
16:31touch on that too is like you said
16:33i i broke in when covid was in its
16:35height as well you know like
16:36it went to everyone's hiring to
16:38everyone's on a hiring freeze check back
16:40in four months you know like all this
16:42it doesn't change once you get into the
16:44job you know like
16:46no day i've ever had goes as planned you
16:48know it's like oh there's a surgery oh
16:50it's kicked back
16:51three hours you know something like
16:53there's stuff that's always going and
16:54then it's like hey this surgery is super
16:55easy you get in there
16:57and then that surgery wasn't easy um
16:59there's things that came up so it's
17:01it's just part of the job like you said
17:02get comfortable with being uncomfortable
17:04because that's this job like you're
17:06going to be learning every single day
17:07and i talk to reps
17:08who've been in it for 20 years and
17:09they're like i still learn every single
17:11day which is exciting
17:12um but it has it has its challenges and
17:15just a mindset in that
17:16as well so you are now in you can take a
17:20big breath
17:21um and then tell us about kind of your
17:24first experiences because like i said
17:26you're in one of the like busiest
17:27territories
17:28right now and i would love to just kind
17:30of hear what like we touched on your
17:32days but
17:33you're waking up early going out late
17:34can can you let us know
17:36what that looks like for you and what an
17:38average day looks like in
17:40an associate sales rep so
17:43for me personally in my territory
17:45currently right now
17:46i work under four territory managers
17:50in as jacob said one of the most
17:52competitive and busiest markets in the
17:54world
17:55so honestly the biggest thing i've
17:57learned is to just be adaptable
17:59and you just got to be ready for
18:00anything um
18:02i think honestly before this i was all
18:04just like oh like you know it's your
18:05schedule
18:06like i can handle it and then like when
18:08you get thrown at like a hundred
18:10outlook invites and you're like oh my
18:12god i have to be eight places at the
18:14same time
18:15you're you know there's a lot of stress
18:17that comes into it but
18:18um i have like the most amazing mentors
18:22and tms like ever they are the coolest
18:24people
18:25um they all work so hard and like
18:28they're all just so willing to like
18:29teach me everything they know so i'm
18:31very very lucky in that sense um
18:34it's just like a blessing like i have
18:36the best people ever to work under
18:38um that being said as i said before your
18:41days are so unpredictable you never know
18:43what's gonna happen
18:44i might know my schedule tonight
18:46probably i'm gonna say right now i do
18:48know my schedule it's
18:497 p.m here where i'm at right now and my
18:52schedule has just been you know
18:53clarified for tomorrow but i mean all
18:55day today i'm running around i'm like i
18:56have no idea what i'm gonna do tomorrow
18:58and tomorrow i might get there and
18:59things might change i've gone to
19:01hospitals and you know you get there at
19:037 00 am you're about to start your case
19:04and they're like oh it's pushed back or
19:06you have like
19:06things are added you don't know other
19:08doctors have cases
19:10it can get crazy so you know be ready
19:12for everything
19:13um don't expect to come home before 6 pm
19:17um in my head mentally i just say okay
19:19every morning i'm leaving my house at 6
19:21a.m
19:22and if i don't get back till 6 pm that's
19:24just how it is so if
19:26you expect that then i think it makes
19:28your day a lot easier
19:29um because then you're like you know not
19:32thinking oh i'm gonna get home at one
19:33and you know i'm gonna relax like no
19:35there's no time
19:38but i love it it's like such an
19:39energizing job
19:41um you know i don't know if anybody out
19:42here is like very adhd like i am
19:45so adhd and this job is like the best
19:47thing ever for me because i'm so busy
19:49all day long i think i walked five miles
19:51today it was great
19:52um so i love it just be ready to work
19:56so hard and to be tired and you got to
19:59pick something you're passionate about
20:00or else
20:01you might not wake up in the morning
20:02yeah no 100 and
20:04and i think you do a great job um just
20:06with your knowledge
20:07you're so smart and you're but like this
20:10is just you're always learning no
20:11two cases are the same there's always
20:14just so much to take so
20:15like you said a lot of stress that comes
20:17with it and you know for everyone
20:19listening we
20:20we broke in around the same time so
20:22we're kind of going through
20:23drinking through the fire hose um i
20:26think kara may
20:27be drinking a little faster than i am
20:29but uh but no it's it's definitely
20:31quite a transition than what i
20:34i thought it was you know everyone told
20:36me what they thought med device would be
20:37um and that i would be drinking from a
20:39fire hose and it didn't really make much
20:40sense until
20:41you're in your first couple of weeks and
20:43then you start you start learning the
20:45water's coming pretty fast
20:46oh yeah and also i mean please don't
20:49think that once you get the job
20:51like the hard work is over i think um my
20:53manager told me this like
20:55day two he was like here just because
20:56you have the job doesn't mean your
20:57life's gonna be easy now and i was like
20:59oh no
21:00no yeah yeah but it's gonna get harder
21:03but i mean like i come home so happy
21:06from work like i'd say 95 percent of the
21:08days like some days you know
21:09are kind of horrible but um you know
21:12most days i'm just like oh my god i made
21:13a difference like today was great like i
21:15know my
21:16you know tms are going to be so proud of
21:17the work i did for them
21:19um and i get a lot of satisfaction out
21:21of that so it's
21:22it's such an awesome career to be in i
21:24love that there's nothing better
21:26than walking out of a surgery knowing
21:28that someone's life was just impacted
21:30in a positive manner absolutely i love
21:32that and you're not the doctor so you
21:34know like you're gonna be a piece of it
21:35but you're not the actual piece you know
21:37but you're gonna be a part of it no i
21:39love that um and just being
21:41you know staying positive with it you do
21:42a great job at that too um
21:44like she said you guys you got to choose
21:46something that you're passionate about
21:47um otherwise those
21:48those 12 14 hour days can can get
21:51long even longer than they seem so i
21:54love that
21:55and then here just wrapping up i would
21:57love to hear
21:58just the advice you'd give to anyone
22:00trying to break in what can they do to
22:01set themselves apart what would you say
22:03to someone who
22:04is trying to land that associate sales
22:06rep role right now
22:08yeah um honestly i i feel like i said it
22:11a million times but like stay passionate
22:14stay hungry like someone will give you a
22:16chance like there are people out there
22:18that do want to help you like i love
22:20helping people i'd be willing to help
22:21anybody out um but you have to be
22:23willing to
22:23put yourself out there you have to be
22:25willing to be uncomfortable
22:27you know i mean i'm 22 years old i
22:29gained my absolute dream
22:31postgraduate job i never thought this
22:33was possible
22:34anything you dream it can you can
22:36accomplish it i just believe that
22:38um just don't give up and also you know
22:41you want to work for people and a
22:43company that have those values that
22:45align with yours
22:46yes and as we said before like a lot of
22:49those tough days
22:50i know i'm making a difference and
22:52that's how you get through them and i'm
22:53so
22:54proud of the product i sell and i really
22:56just you know i wish
22:58all the luck to people you know hearing
22:59this so

23:03you need any advice
23:04i love helping people i would love to
23:06help you you know land your dream job so
23:08many people help me so
23:10any way to give back i love that i love
23:12that i appreciate that cure and also i
23:14just say this to everyone who's going to
23:15reach out please do reach out to myself
23:17or kyra
