0:03sales i am your host jacob mclaughlin

0:06and today

0:07i have a very special guest i'm so

0:10excited to have her

0:12we have miss lauren brockfield and she

0:15is

0:16a recent college graduate who is here

0:19locally

0:19in arizona so she enjoys the beautiful

0:21sunny degree days that we're having

0:23sorry to everyone out in the midwest um

0:25but

0:26we have her on today because she is

0:29someone that's going to provide a lot of

0:30value to

0:31everybody who's thinking about medical

0:33sales college you know i've had my

0:35opinions i've made videos about them

0:36but what i really wanted to do was get

0:38somebody who's actually currently

0:40in medical sales college going through

0:42the process

0:43and just sharing their experience to

0:45help people and also just just give

0:47their thoughts so

0:48this is something i get a lot of

0:50questions asked but again i have my

0:52opinion but i'm the person

0:53there's no right or wrong answer it's

0:55just what's best for you but i want to

0:57make sure you guys have

0:58all the information to make your own

1:00decision what would be best for you like

1:02i said

1:02if you guys have watched the podcast i

1:04was a pretty determined person and i'm

1:06like i'm not going to

1:07spend money and do this and also i

1:09should put that i'm a cheap dude

1:11i'm a really cheap dude i moved out here

1:12with 1200 bucks i still act like i have

1:141200 bucks you know like

1:16i i live that way so that for me that

1:18was never an option you know and

1:19we've had guests that have done it but

1:21we haven't really spoken a lot about

1:23the process what it looked like so i

1:26want this is for those people that are

1:28trying to break in

1:29and they're deciding should i go to

1:30medical sales college or should i

1:32go get a b2b sales job or what should i

1:35be doing

1:36and if i do go to medical sales college

1:38what to expect

1:39when we get there so lauren's about to

1:42drop a lot of knowledge i'm so excited

1:44to have her

1:44lauren thanks for jumping on today thank

1:46you so much for having me i'm honored to

1:48be here

1:48yeah so lauren real quick before we jump

1:50into it can you tell us a little bit

1:52about yourself kind of

1:53your background and how you even found

1:56medical sales medical sales college

1:58of course um yeah so born and raised in

2:00arizona

2:01um from a young age i've always kind of

2:03been interested in medicine both my

2:04parents are doctors my dad is an ob gyn

2:07my mom is a family doctor

2:08um when i was younger if my parents

2:11couldn't get a babysitter

2:12i would go with my dad on rounds i would

2:13go with him to the hospital i'd watch

2:15him if the patient was okay with it i'd

2:16watch deliveries

2:18i that became routine to me and then i

2:20stopped wanting a babysitter and i'd be

2:22like hey dad can i just go make rounds

2:23with you and

2:24it was like a really cool way for us to

2:25bond as well as

2:27me to learn a lot of um really

2:29fascinating

2:30information um and as i was growing up

2:34with both my parents being doctors

2:35people are constantly like are you gonna

2:36be a doctor you can be a doctor

2:38and that was something that interested

2:39me but i didn't i wasn't like

2:41i i don't know something something was

2:44holding me back from going full-on into

2:45the pre-med route and um when it came

2:47time to go into college

2:49i became fascinated with psychology i

2:51love psychology one of my majors was

2:52psychology the other one was sociology

2:55um and throughout my college career i

2:58thought that i was going to get my phd

3:00and i wanted to be a professor

3:01so um totally took a 180

3:04and was like yeah i want to go into

3:07research and i want to

3:08um teach and worked in research labs

3:11all throughout college um loved it but

3:14something was still missing it like

3:16wasn't the right fit i i

3:18just knew yeah something was missing so

3:20i did some

3:22soul searching a little bit and i

3:26one thing you'll learn about me is that

3:28i love learning and i love school

3:30um and i became immersed into yoga

3:34and i wanted to deepen my practice so i

3:37took my yoga teacher training with no

3:38intention of being a yoga teacher i just

3:40kind of wanted to dive deeper

3:41into the information and then that

3:44pivoted me and pivoted me off on a short

3:46yoga teaching journey um which was great

3:49but then something was still missing

3:51so i uh did some networking i was

3:55talking to people at the yoga studio um

3:57and someone mentioned you know she was a

3:59nurse she was like have you ever thought

4:00about going into medical device sales

4:02um she's like you have an incredible

4:04personality she's like people just love

4:06being around you

4:07talking to you um you're extremely smart

4:09and helpful and she's like i could

4:10totally see you in that field and i was

4:11like i didn't even

4:12know something like that existed um so i

4:15just didn't i just did a bunch of

4:17research and

4:19i was like this is it this is what i'm

4:20looking for this is the exact fit i

4:22always kind of knew i wanted to teach

4:23someone

4:23whether it was yoga or whether i was a

4:25professor but i didn't know who i wanted

4:27to teach and i didn't know how i could

4:29insert medicine into it so it's amazing

4:31that this is just like

4:32the mesh of everything i love that no

4:34and it's funny that she said

4:36mine's the exact same story you know i

4:37was a personal trainer

4:39and and i loved it i just had a lot of

4:41people who kept saying hey have you ever

4:42thought about this thought about this

4:43and i didn't know it

4:44and i as you guys have probably heard on

4:46the podcast i'm a very determined person

4:48i'm an all-or-nothing person

4:50so when someone asked me about it i'm

4:51not even kidding when i spent three

4:52weeks of watching nothing but videos and

4:54listening to a hundred podcasts of just

4:55medical device sales learning about it

4:57trying to do it like what you're saying

4:59and the thing that i want to just touch

5:02on

5:02you're going to go so far as just loving

5:04to learn um that's

5:05i'm the same way i'm always listening to

5:07podcast i'm always listening to

5:08education

5:09reading articles to try to learn but

5:11that's something in this field that i've

5:12been told million

5:14times like hey i've been in it for 20

5:16years

5:17i learned something new every single day

5:18that's reps i've had the conversation so

5:19i think that's important with everyone

5:21who is thinking

5:22about going into it you are teaching but

5:24you have to love

5:25the art of learning because there's

5:26always new technology there's always new

5:28research coming out

5:30and you being able to find that match

5:32that fits you because i'm the same thing

5:34i love people i love relationships i

5:36love to teach

5:37again personal training helping people

5:38be the best

5:40person but also you know the other side

5:42of things as well

5:44so i love that you're able to find that

5:45now when we you found medical device

5:48sales you you saw that right

5:50how did you find medical sales college

5:52and what what did that kind of look for

5:53you

5:54during that process to be like hey

5:56should i go to this or not

5:57right um so when i was researching

5:59medical device sales um

6:00i probably wasn't doing the right type

6:04of research i was

6:06i i didn't look into podcasts which was

6:08really dumb of me i wasn't taking

6:10advantage of the resources that i had

6:12or i didn't realize that those were

6:13those resources were at my fingertips um

6:15and i kept on seeing things about

6:18medical sales

6:20college um they're really good at

6:22selling

6:23themselves and i was getting

6:24advertisements everywhere i was

6:27um yeah it was just showing up

6:28everywhere uh and

6:30i was reaching out to recruiters on med

6:33reps um

6:34because i heard that was a good place to

6:36find jobs and

6:38um they kept on saying you need more b2b

6:40sales you need

6:41more experience essentially and i was

6:43like well

6:44um i don't see myself working in a sales

6:47job

6:49for adp or for something like that for

6:51two years

6:52and i was trying to kind of look for a

6:55route that would allow me to

6:57show that i'm committed to this and i'm

6:59really really interested in this but um

7:02i i was trying to look for an alternate

7:05alternate route essentially yeah and

7:07maybe a faster route for yourself

7:08exactly uh expedited yeah no yeah

7:12um yeah so that that brought me to

7:14medical device sales college

7:16i was when i was applying for it they

7:18claimed that they only

7:19accept sorry oh you're good you're fine

7:22i they claim that they only accept 25 or

7:2520

7:2625 of their applicants i was like well

7:28you know what i'll just apply

7:30um i mean i i've never really had a hard

7:32time getting into things

7:34okay oh excuse me trying to put my

7:37stuff my my quiet sorry now we're good

7:40um so i

7:44thought that i would apply and kind of

7:45just see what the application process

7:47was like i thought it was a good

7:48experience for me to

7:49kind of get those interviews and talk to

7:51people that were in the industry and

7:52just

7:54yeah see where it took me and um the

7:56more i learned about it the more i was

7:58like wow this

7:59actually seems like a pretty good fit

8:00for me i love it i love it and i i do

8:02just want to touch base again not to

8:04put anything but great at sales right 25

8:07of people get in where you know like i

8:09it's always funny to me because i worked

8:11for people who worked on an online

8:13business and that's actually one

8:15i always laugh because that's a tactic

8:16right like hey if i put a product for a

8:1899

8:19and i cut it now it's 39.99 now you

8:22think you're getting a deal

8:23um again so again this isn't uh to talk

8:26down on anything

8:27i just do want you guys to understand

8:28maybe start thinking in a different

8:30mindset

8:31um because there is a lot of money and

8:33psychology that goes into

8:35trying to do sales with it as well um so

8:38no so you found it

8:39um and then once you got into medical

8:41sales college right you're you're now

8:43there what week are you currently in

8:45on how many weeks in the program and

8:47then can you kind of tell us about

8:48the division because i know there's

8:49again i don't know all of them but i

8:51know there's several quote unquote

8:52divisions that you can go into your

8:53training

8:54right yeah um so i will be starting my

8:56sixth week

8:57um which will be halfway i will be

8:59starting my halfway point um okay so 12

9:02weeks is the program

9:03yes the week the weeks are it's 12 weeks

9:05total

9:06and um my program is uh specifically for

9:09orthopedics extremities and trauma

9:11okay okay very cool yeah there's been

9:13one that i've heard um

9:14and you're in person correct yes okay

9:17because i know there's there's the in

9:19person one and then they also have an

9:20online

9:21yes version as well that's like eight

9:23weeks or sorry this is actually i'm in

9:25the hybrid one the first okay

9:27um week the first week was online and

9:30then we also have a second week that

9:32will be online um and then the rest are

9:33in person

9:34okay okay we hybrid so that yeah so they

9:37give you a couple options to do it which

9:38is nice of

9:39you know being they have an online i

9:41know one that was like eight weeks that

9:42was all online

9:44maybe a little cheaper option and stuff

9:45so going into that um so you're in

9:47there so far can you kind of tell us

9:50about your experience your first six

9:51weeks what has that looked like what's a

9:53normal day look look for you

9:55you know during medical sales college so

9:57monday through thursday the hours are 7

9:59a.m to 4 p.m

10:01um occasionally you get out a little bit

10:03later occasionally you get out a little

10:04bit earlier and then fridays

10:05from 7am to 11am um a day

10:10in medical sales college kind of varies

10:12some days we'll be

10:13lecturing and there are a lot of

10:14powerpoints other days are really

10:15hands-on and you're

10:17working with in a saw bone lab

10:20i definitely think that i've only worked

10:24with three different teachers right now

10:25um i can definitely say that some of the

10:27teachers are

10:29much better than the others which is

10:31unfortunate because you think that if

10:33you're paying

10:33a lot or as much as you do pay for the

10:35tuition that they would

10:36really ensure that they're getting

10:38top-notch people

10:40um uh

10:43yeah so the the typical day we'll look

10:45at um

10:48we haven't really gotten into sales

10:49training yet we're mostly looking at

10:50like uh orthopedics

10:51okay can we talk about sales training

10:52real quick when is sales training for

10:54that program out of 12 weeks

10:55last week oh interesting you know so i

10:59always laugh because i get a call from a

11:00lot of people and again this is just to

11:01help the viewers that are listening

11:03right

11:03that's been something i've heard many

11:05times is

11:07if you already have an exercise science

11:09degree like myself or a physiology

11:10degree

11:11and i hear a majority time that's what

11:13they're going on through the first 10

11:14weeks or whatever it is you know and

11:15then there's

11:16hey i needed to learn how to sell they

11:17always put it at the very end dangle the

11:19carrot like hey stick it out

11:20and you'll learn on it the last week um

11:23again

11:24just touching i don't think it's i think

11:26it's a great tactic

11:27not tactic i think it's a great thing

11:28that they do to set up for their

11:29business

11:30but just something for everybody to hear

11:32that because that has been a frustration

11:33that i've personally heard

11:35from candidates who reach out to me that

11:37are in it is they're like i need to

11:38learn how to sell that's why i'm going

11:40to this college

11:41and i don't learn it till the last week

11:44and i don't know if that's enough time

11:45and so i just want to get your feedback

11:47on that what's your thoughts

11:48um and and also during the labs are you

11:51learning a lot do you feel like it's

11:52very beneficial or is it

11:54what's your thoughts on it right now um

11:56yeah so for the labs themselves i love

11:58the labs um they're extremely hands-on

12:00i one thing i don't like is that we

12:03we don't get to perform all the steps

12:05it's kind of like we switch off taking

12:06steps so like for example

12:07uh this last week we focused on trauma

12:11but i'll move it back to two weeks ago

12:13we were working on

12:14total knee uh sorry total hip

12:16arthroplasties

12:17and um we would each get to kind of like

12:20do one step so like

12:21one person would ream the femur and then

12:24the next person

12:24would come in or sorry bring the

12:26acetabulum and then the next person

12:27would come in

12:28and hit the um the plate to the

12:31acetabulum so it wasn't like we got to

12:33go through

12:33each step doing it ourselves we kind of

12:35just switched off and then we'd watch

12:37like somebody else complete yeah um

12:41as far as like learning really in depth

12:43i

12:44i believe that i have like i know a lot

12:46about tkas and a lot about

12:48but um if i do get into thas or tkas i

12:52know that a company's gonna make sure

12:53that i really really really

12:55in and out um it's cool to go to have

12:58that background as i love learning but

13:01as far as it being a necessity with the

13:03whole sales

13:04training being the last week that has

13:06kind of been a common discussion between

13:08me and some of my classmates that it's

13:10the majority of us when we went into

13:12this program it was to get sales

13:14training more

13:15yeah and it seems like it's very anatomy

13:18and

13:18like it's very um based on

13:22anatomy like we were just yeah 100 and

13:25the thing i do want to just say is

13:26i i do want to touch on i think it's

13:29such a great thing that they do go into

13:30it for somebody who

13:32doesn't know you know like that is the

13:33point of medical sales college i don't

13:35want it to always seem like i'm

13:36bashing on them or like i don't think

13:38it's worth it i do want to say i think

13:40it's a great like if you didn't know and

13:41it's a resource

13:42i think they do a great job from what

13:45i've heard again i don't have experience

13:46of talking about it showing you of

13:47things like

13:48hey this is what you would go for and if

13:50you're just trying to get a background

13:52because now like you said

13:53you could go and talk about a total hip

13:55or hip arthroplasty and actually just

13:57have a conversation with the rep

13:58or you know and if you didn't go there

14:00you wouldn't be able to speak about it

14:02before

14:03um at least to the detail so again i do

14:06always say that is like

14:07i think medical sales college is for

14:09that person who is trying to learn more

14:11trying to get a better background and

14:12and i think that's what they are great

14:14for is giving you that

14:16that a good rounded

14:19i should say well-rounded but like good

14:20rounded like background of

14:22what medical sales is what you could

14:25expect

14:26but like you said waiting to do sales a

14:29company's gonna teach you that has been

14:30always been my big teaching point or

14:32like my big point i've

14:33talked with everybody on is it's if

14:36you're going for

14:37trauma correct or if you're going for

14:38orthopedics and you get an orthopedics

14:40it's awesome

14:41the amount of times i hear people who go

14:43to the trauma orthopedics who get

14:44something in capital or get something in

14:46something different

14:47again you've got the great value of

14:50learning the talk

14:51the lingo everything you're in the

14:53experience but it's not

14:55you're gonna have to go through all this

14:56training again for two to four weeks

14:59and go through everything um to make

15:02sure you do it and then this is always

15:03my

15:03joke i think i was talking to you about

15:04it or someone else but it was you know

15:07if you're doing hips and your product

15:09you get hired for is hips

15:11you don't care about the knee like the

15:12knee has nothing to do with you

15:14you and like and that's what always like

15:16i love the anatomy and i agree with it

15:17but like if my products one piece of the

15:19body

15:20i don't care about any other part of the

15:21potty body because i just need to know

15:23my landmarks for my product because

15:26that's where i'm going to be

15:27the the expert in um so again i always

15:30just try to show that to everybody who

15:32is

15:33considering there's there's just a lot

15:34of things to look at but again i think

15:36medical sales college does a great job

15:38of giving you a well-rounded background

15:41of looking at like hey this is if you

15:42did go into trauma or if this is what

15:44you're going into

15:44this is something you would actually be

15:46seeing and you'd be getting in your

15:47training and again this is for the

15:49person who is doesn't know anything

15:51about sales

15:52or they don't know anything about

15:53medical sales and they're just trying to

15:54get that learning and that educational

15:56piece

15:57so i do say like to the benefit of

15:58medical sales college i think that is a

16:00great point and it's a resource

16:02for that one other thing that i do like

16:05that they do

16:05um is in each week we have a day devoted

16:09to

16:09looking um at the products in that

16:12category

16:12and we have to uh each like present

16:15essentially

16:15the future benefit values are of that

16:17product um

16:19and provide uh clinical research to

16:22be able to show to a surgeon that would

16:24allow us to like back up

16:25i love it and because again that's what

16:27you're gonna have to you're gonna have

16:28to profile and you're gonna have to be

16:29able to speak to it and it's teaching

16:30you how to do that

16:31so again i i don't want this when i do

16:34these podcasts about medical sales

16:35college because everyone knows my

16:36feelings

16:36i don't want it to seem like i don't

16:38think it's valuable at all i think about

16:40like i think it has

16:41a lot of great value again i just tell

16:43everybody it's it's what fits you

16:45um the best so going into that i've

16:48heard different prices

16:49again not to get too into it but like

16:51can you give a well-rounded

16:52if somebody's looking at medical sales

16:54college it's 12 weeks or eight weeks

16:56what's what's the price point that

16:57they're looking

16:58at going to when i was going or when i

17:01paid for it

17:01it um i believe the base tuition was

17:03fourteen thousand dollars

17:04okay this is kind of where things get

17:08a little interesting um they charge 350

17:12for their md rep track um

17:15that's their their uh software it's kind

17:18of like it's supposed to be a little bit

17:20like a crm

17:21system um it has

17:24uh loads of information but we

17:27essentially had to pay for a service

17:29that's not really completely done

17:30um they're not finished uh there's

17:33there's a lot of

17:34parts of the service that are read that

17:36you can't actually click on

17:38okay anything that is in the um

17:42software you have to fill out so like

17:44it'll just it'll have like blank

17:45templates

17:46and then we basically had to pay for our

17:48homework i got you you know i got you

17:50um it's you would think that that would

17:53come with the tuition

17:54but that isn't included and then once

17:57you graduate you have to pay 350

17:59a year to continue to use that software

18:01okay

18:02interesting so so you're so if you're

18:04looking at medical sales college you're

18:05going to the 12-week program

18:07it's looking more at like 15 000 exactly

18:10yeah so and again no right or wrong it's

18:14just what you guys feel comfortable with

18:15you know like i've heard a lot of people

18:17there they want to go spend you know 15k

18:19is a great investment

18:21if this is gonna be a job the rest of

18:22your life it gets your foot in the door

18:23and it saves you two years of

18:25you know uh working and doing the b2b

18:28sales experience

18:29um again where i just tell everybody i

18:31felt like i was more motivated than a

18:33lot of human beings and i'm a cheap

18:34person

18:35so that just led to me not doing any of

18:37it um and getting my job but again i

18:39don't think there's a right or wrong for

18:41anybody it's just what you feel

18:42comfortable do you feel comfortable

18:44spending that kind of cash and doing an

18:45investment on that and going through the

18:47process

18:48but also this is going to lead us into

18:51the next

18:51segment or the next question is what are

18:54you doing to get a job or to ensure that

18:57you have a job once you get out of

18:58medical sales college because that is

19:00the thing i want people to understand

19:03i saw what was saw what they learned at

19:06medical sales college and i always just

19:08thought to myself hey

19:09i can reach out to 100 reps and all the

19:11100 reps are going to tell me their

19:12actual experience i'm going to learn all

19:14this

19:14information that i need to know and i'm

19:16still going to have to network and try

19:18to get myself

19:18a job in the interview with medical

19:21sales college

19:22when you go to it are you just given a

19:23job afterwards because that's something

19:25i want to

19:26uh clarify for everybody listening

19:28because this is something

19:30that has been a stigma i think around it

19:32is if you go to medical sales college

19:34you are promised a job once you leave i

19:37cannot emphasize enough that you will

19:38need to put in the work

19:40necessary to get a job just because you

19:41go to medical sales college you're not

19:43just paying 15 grand

19:44and boop you got a job like you're still

19:46putting the work in if

19:48if um if you expect that you're just

19:51going to get a job after graduating

19:52you're going to be in for a rude

19:53awakening

19:55i i was talking with one of my

19:57classmates and they

19:59a student mentioned basically that they

20:02were expecting employers to reach out to

20:03them once we graduated and it's like i

20:05don't i don't know

20:06what world you think you're in but

20:09to be like hey i want you to come work

20:12oh i saw you went to medical sales

20:14college we're going to give you this

20:15huge job when we have 200 people

20:16applying for the exact same job

20:18and you know i i say this because that's

20:20what something i really want people to

20:22know and i think medical sales college

20:23from my experience of

20:24people i've told to it's been 50 50. i

20:26had a couple people tell me

20:27hey they made it very clear i'm going to

20:29have to still put in all the work

20:31to get this and to get this job but

20:33again i think that's where medical sales

20:35is a step up where it's like hey if

20:37you're going up

20:38you're if you're doing all this work so

20:40is somebody else but you have medical

20:41sales college and they don't

20:43maybe that's going to show that you're a

20:44little more committed that you put

20:46in it but i do that was something when

20:49people asked me recruiters would always

20:50be like you going to medical sales

20:52college

20:52and i would actually talk to other reps

20:54and regional managers

20:56and the the the stigma around it and

20:58again i'm not saying it was correct or

21:00incorrect but the stigma around it was

21:01like

21:02it's kind of like college you go to

21:04college you go to four years you come

21:06out with debt and now you're like

21:07where's my job

21:08guess what they don't care about your

21:10job you got to go get your job

21:13and i just say that same thing if you

21:15guys are going to medical sales college

21:17or whatever you're doing

21:18you have to understand nothing's ever

21:20given you're still going to have to put

21:22in all this work and time

21:24and that is the actual talks i have when

21:26people like yourself call me

21:28i'm like hey while you're going through

21:29college make sure you're still doing all

21:30the networking and you're doing

21:32everything because you're gonna have to

21:33do it to get the job

21:34just like myself it's what i did i did

21:37everything that these kids are getting

21:38out of medical sales college and they

21:39didn't do any of it during

21:41the time they're 12 weeks in didn't

21:43network at all

21:44and now they're like looking for a job

21:46and they're at start one when i

21:48i did the exact same thing with no sales

21:51experience no medical sales college

21:53did all of it took six months reached

21:55out to thousands of people but

21:56by the end of my six months i had four

21:58giant job offers

22:00right and also one thing that i do want

22:02to touch on is

22:03i one thing that kind of frustrated me

22:06um

22:06that i they they didn't like

22:10emphasize when you were going into it um

22:12or applying for it but when you're in

22:14the actual class

22:14they really really recommend not um

22:17applying for jobs until after you

22:19graduate and they

22:20they they yeah they emphasize that you

22:23should wait until after you have all the

22:24training before you start

22:26taking these steps which as a person

22:29that's incredibly motivated and wants to

22:30get into it that is very

22:31has i i couldn't do that i was like i

22:34need to

22:35start reaching out to people like this

22:36is just making me anxious not talking to

22:38you

22:38i have all these things at my fingertips

22:40yeah and this was something i have told

22:42i talked with another rep he had a buddy

22:44who went to medical sales college he

22:46actually got a job

22:47during medical sales college and what he

22:49told us was that

22:51he was refunded the tuition because it

22:54goes into their stats of getting a hired

22:56person but he

22:57was refunded the tuition because he got

22:59a job wow and

23:00again i don't know if that's still true

23:02but i know for that candidate

23:04it was because he told us that from my

23:07understanding

23:08on their code of caught like when you're

23:09signing their basically they say that

23:12uh once you're 60 of the way through the

23:14class you cannot get any money back but

23:16um if you for example if you were like

23:1940

23:19done you could get 60 of your money back

23:22i got you yep you could still get some

23:23of your money back

23:24yeah that was the just the talk he said

23:26he got money back even though he got the

23:28job midway through

23:30um college again and i think while

23:32you're doing it a great reason to reach

23:34out i understand their point of hey

23:36make sure you focus on it so you can

23:38learn it

23:39but in the same res in the same realm

23:43it doesn't do you any good to have a

23:44piece of paper and not have any

23:45connections because now you're

23:47starting it all over and trying to get a

23:50job and again

23:52i want just to keep emphasizing this is

23:53not a bash this is just real life i'm

23:55just trying to

23:56add as much benefit to people so if you

23:58are going to medical sales college

23:59that's awesome i'm glad you made the

24:01decision and that was the right choice

24:02for you but don't think you're just

24:03going to get a job offer right out

24:05right after you still better be putting

24:07in the work putting in the time

24:08and you're just showing when you went to

24:11medical sales college

24:12you're committed and and i also do just

24:15want to always put this because we say

24:16committed but i don't even want to say

24:18all the time that you're

24:19more committed maybe you just had more

24:20money because i know a lot of people who

24:22don't have 15 grand to drop and don't

24:24want to go in debt

24:25who are still committed to trying to

24:26break in that i talk to

24:28totally i feel very fortunate because uh

24:30going to

24:31i got a lot of academic scholarships

24:33yeah and um i

24:35my parents were very uh kind to save up

24:38money for me to go to college so i

24:40had a lot of money that was not used

24:42that which was part of the reason that

24:44i was okay with spending the money go to

24:47medical sales college but

24:48i think that if this like

24:51it's very frustrating to hear that a lot

24:53of my classmates are in debt now because

24:56of the situation and i yeah i don't i

25:00don't know

25:00if if i if if i were to be going into

25:03debt to do this i didn't know if i would

25:05make the same decision

25:07yeah and then again just to re put this

25:10out there

25:11it's everyone's personal choice you know

25:12like and i agree that was my that's the

25:14reason i didn't go

25:15i'm not i didn't see the value of the

25:17money to put it in

25:18um you know but if you're someone who's

25:20listening and you feel like that fifteen

25:22thousand dollars

25:23would help your career for the rest of

25:25your life you know maybe it is the right

25:26choice again it's

25:27there's no right or wrong answer it's

25:29just whatever you talk about

25:31you think's best um also now going into

25:33it

25:34i want to talk about what you're doing

25:36during this time

25:37to ensure that you're getting a job i

25:38know we touched on it but i want you to

25:40kind of go in detail

25:41because i'm going to talk about what

25:42you're doing because i already know and

25:43this is why i know you'll be successful

25:45and you'll have a job very soon

25:46but would love to just have you share

25:48what you're doing to

25:50ensure that well first off listen to the

25:52words that come out of jacob's mouth

25:53because he's a very intelligent person

25:55and has a lot of wise words to share um

25:58but

25:58networking overall has just

26:01changed my life um talking to people

26:05specifically surgeons has

26:08immensely helped um that people are a

26:10lot nicer

26:11than you would expect i i think that at

26:13first i was almost like scared to reach

26:15out to people which is stupid because

26:16that's what

26:17the whole industry is and i i didn't

26:21realize how willing people are to help

26:23um so

26:24just taking advantage of those resources

26:26that you have at your fingertips at the

26:28yoga studio that i

26:29was working at there are so many health

26:33care workers there

26:34um i i didn't even

26:39think a lot of them are my friends so i

26:40like i didn't even think to like talk to

26:42them necessarily about like

26:44the industry but i once i started

26:46telling people that that's what i was

26:47trying to get into the conversations

26:48just naturally started sparking they'd

26:50be like oh my god i want to introduce

26:51you to this person because you guys

26:52would totally hit it off and

26:53um just tell as many people as you can

26:57like telling as many people as you can

26:59what you're trying to do and just

27:01talking about your goals um i think gets

27:04you that much closer

27:05to achieving them um yep stick it into

27:08life yeah yeah exactly um i

27:11re i've asked as many surgeons as i can

27:15um hey if there's any fortunately i know

27:17some of them because yeah

27:20okay um you need you can't just from i

27:22wouldn't just reach out to someone be

27:23like hey let me shadow you

27:25yeah you need to like establish that

27:26relationship first but um

27:28with covid i copied currently it's made

27:31things a little bit difficult but

27:33um just reaching out to people and

27:35asking them

27:36i just want to learn not necessarily i

27:38want to meet these people just like if

27:39there's anything i can learn or just

27:41watch i would love to be there um it

27:44just seems like things keep on falling

27:46into place

27:46i love it and so everybody who's

27:48listening please listen to what just

27:49came out of her mouth

27:51reached out to ask to learn not to see

27:54what she could get from somebody not to

27:55see what she could take from someone a

27:57job or anything

27:58but she wanted to learn because as we've

28:00talked about in this

28:02podcast is this is a teaching profession

28:04even surgeons they're teaching people

28:06all the time why they're going they're

28:07learning their students always

28:09but also as a rep people want to teach

28:11so when you go in and you're trying to

28:13make those relationships it's always

28:14asking

28:14what can i learn from you because people

28:16love to help other people

28:17you know i joke around when i'm on the

28:19phone with someone and they're calling

28:21me and asking me i'm like people like to

28:22talk about themselves and share their

28:24experiences just like i'm doing with you

28:25right now

28:26um because that's just human nature but

28:28like you said being able to go in with a

28:30mind of like hey i'm just wanting to

28:32learn instead of hey i want to get this

28:34from you or i need you to say this for

28:36me

28:36it's going to take your search and your

28:39process

28:40to a whole another level so i love that

28:42you just stated that um

28:44and the thing i want to touch on again

28:46is i just had a podcast last week about

28:47this and i told you guys

28:49the golden goose you know the golden

28:51goose is the surgeon and i say this

28:53is if the person you're trying to get if

28:56you're trying to get into medical sales

28:57right

28:58the a lot of times the surgeon is the

29:00person you're going after because

29:01they're

29:01going to use your product if you can go

29:03to the person who's going to use your

29:04product and they like you

29:06and they're seeing reps and they put

29:07their name your name

29:09out there guess who has a real good shot

29:11of meeting the manager

29:13that's selling those products because if

29:15and i always say this from another

29:16standpoint if you've never thought about

29:18this

29:18if you're with company a and you like

29:22a surgeon and the surgeon likes you and

29:23you start talking to them and

29:25there's company b maybe company b is

29:27going to be offering you a job because

29:30if the surgeon likes you and you worked

29:32for company b

29:33maybe he'd switch from company a to

29:35company b and now give them all this

29:36business plus get probably some of his

29:38partners

29:38and now there's job that just opened up

29:40for you and and that's a real thing that

29:42happened i had

29:43companies offer me and they're like hey

29:45send me because i'm a personal trainer

29:47and i know a lot of doctors how many

29:48doctors do you know let's see how much

29:50volume they did if they did 300 000 or

29:52maybe they did 500

29:53000 and they can hire you as an

29:56associate for 60k

29:58oh that's an awesome deal because we

29:59just got a competitor doctor that we

30:01didn't have

30:02and we just made more money and got new

30:04relationships and we're making

30:05this big of a profit you know like

30:07that's what people don't think about so

30:09if you

30:09are someone listening and you have the

30:11quote unquote golden goose a surgeon or

30:14that person

30:15if they like you you have them help you

30:18because that will go a long way and like

30:20you said just going in and

30:22shadowing it's going to take a long way

30:24because if

30:25if you're with them and they have a rep

30:27come in which they will because they're

30:28a doctor

30:29and they're using products and they can

30:31ask who you are or they can introduce

30:32you to someone

30:34they just got your foot in the door

30:35compared to you applying online which i

30:37just put out a podcast about

30:38um it's gonna go away farther

30:42i completely agree yeah so again

30:44everybody just listening

30:46i think that's a great advice that she's

30:48saying and again it's always coming down

30:49to networking it's reaching out i say

30:50until i'm blue in the face like i say on

30:52this podcast almost every time now

30:54you guys can look for the magic formula

30:56i'm telling you the magical formula

30:57it's someone you know that's going to

30:58get you hired it's not what you know

31:01it's not this magic certificate that you

31:03have printed out that says you

31:04took a course you know that you took a

31:06certification it's going to be

31:08someone likes you enough to take a

31:09chance on you and that's what's going to

31:11get your foot in the door

31:12also listening to your podcast as well

31:15as a few other medical device sales

31:16podcasts yeah

31:18completely changed um i like the chat

31:21changed my perspective as well as like

31:23um introduce new ideas to me

31:25i love it i i instead of listening to

31:28music now like in the car i'm just

31:29listening to podcasts it's amazing

31:30yeah and i always encourage other people

31:32to to listen to

31:33so many podcasts because i might say

31:36something and another guy might or

31:38another girl might say something

31:39and it it hits you when they said it not

31:42when i said it or they have a whole

31:44different spin you know like my favorite

31:45one and i'll just i'm gonna put them out

31:47there is

31:47road to medical sales my my friend scott

31:50macon like he had him and sarah have an

31:52amazing podcast

31:53and and they're who i listened to a lot

31:55of times when i was trying to break in

31:56but also you know like scott just won

31:59rep of the year he has a lot of

32:00experience same with sarah she's a great

32:02rep

32:02like they're going to be able to tell

32:04you things and give you stuff that i

32:05could never give you

32:06i can just give you my experience and

32:08also it's what i learned as you know as

32:10a yoga teacher and a personal trainer

32:12everybody has different fits not every

32:14client that i trained was a good

32:16fit for me but might have been a good

32:18fit for another trainer

32:20so like you said reaching out trying to

32:21learn as much as you can that's what i'm

32:23always about you know it doesn't have to

32:25be me

32:26it has to be someone that you can get

32:27advice and you feel like

32:29you're getting value from and i think

32:30that's a great thing that you're saying

32:31is you know

32:32don't just stick to one person because

32:34it might work for that one person but if

32:36you're not like that one person

32:37it might not work for you or you might

32:39not not just like feel the energy vibe

32:41or you like listening to them

32:42i know i don't shut up so maybe some

32:44people are like man dude shut up

32:46slow down a little bit and let us enjoy

32:48our life

32:50no no no no not at all i appreciate

32:53about your podcast is i don't have to

32:54speed it up every other podcast

32:56i put it at a little bit faster because

32:57people talk too slow

32:59the program so no i appreciate that

33:01about you i love it i love it all right

33:03so lauren

33:04again i appreciate you going into great

33:06detail with everything

33:07um i'm hoping that the listeners that

33:09are just on the edge that are thinking

33:11again

33:11i don't want this to come off like it

33:12was a negative thing i just what i've

33:14always preached when i'm on a phone call

33:16with people

33:17i don't care if you like it or you don't

33:18like it i'm going to tell you how it is

33:20i'm going to tell you my experience and

33:21i'm going to tell you the truth

33:22and i hope you know if you're listening

33:25to this podcast

33:26you're listening to what you're in your

33:28situation what you're looking for

33:30um i just want to touch on the three big

33:32things really there's three routes when

33:33you're trying to break into medical

33:34sales

33:35you can go to that b2b that everybody

33:37talks about that's a that's a route

33:39understand that you're probably looking

33:40at a year to three years of breaking in

33:43doing good at a centos adp one of those

33:45places

33:46trying to get president club winner once

33:48you've done good or grown a good

33:49territory then you're applying for the

33:50associate role that's one option option

33:53number two medical sales college i think

33:55it's a great option as well

33:56because if you're someone who doesn't

33:58have any experience you don't have any

33:59sales experience

34:00this is a way like you said to show that

34:02you're committed that you are interested

34:04it's going to be a financial commitment

34:05as well

34:06but to give you a great opportunity to

34:08learn what you don't know because

34:10i tell people it would have been a great

34:11experience for me as well when i

34:13if i didn't know anything about medical

34:14sales instead of talking to all these

34:16reps

34:16i could have been just talking you're

34:18going to a class and getting taught from

34:19people in the industry

34:21so i think that's also getting a little

34:24feedback

34:25um also a great tip and then the third

34:27one is like what we've just talked about

34:29just networking with as many people as

34:31possible which you're going to have to

34:32do

34:33with all the other ones um and just do

34:35what you can to break in and get

34:37it only takes one that's always been my

34:39motto if you reach out to a thousand

34:41people you just need one person to say i

34:43want to take a chance on you

34:44so those are really the three options

34:47there's probably another avenue that i

34:48missed

34:49but with that i want to get your advice

34:52if someone is going to reach out to you

34:54and say lauren

34:55you know because this is what happens

34:56all the time they'll reach out lauren

34:58i'm thinking about medical sales college

35:00i want your honest opinion what would

35:01your advice to me be

35:03and again this is i want this to be

35:05stated this is lauren's opinion

35:07this isn't the the end-all be-all like

35:09but this is what lauren feels and i want

35:11everybody to like respect that

35:13um for everyone listening because this

35:14is her experience and just like my

35:16my opinions my experience so when it

35:19comes down to it i

35:20definitely think that going to medical

35:22sales college has been a really

35:24a huge learning experience um i

35:27do love the aspect that you are able to

35:30network with people that have already

35:31been in the industry and

35:33it's almost kind of like a 12-week

35:34interview you're you're working

35:35one-on-one with these teachers

35:37um so they're gonna see if you're

35:39showing up late they're gonna know if

35:40you're showing up late they're gonna

35:41know if you're not motivated they're

35:43with those things in mind it's kind of

35:45nice to have them as

35:46a reference that you can be like hey i

35:48all of our grades are public i didn't

35:50mention that too

35:50we can all all of my classmates we can

35:52see each other's grades and i like that

35:54because

35:54i tend to i'm a competitive person

35:58well so i liking school that wasn't a

36:01problem for me but i could i could

36:02understand why some people wouldn't like

36:03that so

36:04putting putting yourself out there um

36:08and ex experiencing this what

36:12uh is awesome but again i think that you

36:15can

36:15take what you've learned from podcasts

36:18or from

36:19other avenues and you can learn similar

36:22things that you would learn in medical

36:23sales college again i'm not completed

36:25i haven't completed the um i haven't

36:28completed the whole certification but

36:32from what i have currently um completed

36:35i would say that it's not

36:38necessary to have this in depth

36:41of like anatomy and physiology and

36:44knowing this in depth about all these

36:45various products there's a lot of

36:47information to shove into your head

36:48which

36:48if you love learning awesome but it's

36:51not necessarily

36:52necessary from from my perspective

36:55yeah of course no and again i i

36:58appreciate you being honest again that

36:59was

37:00that's i've had people on the podcast

37:03who really promote it and they think it

37:04was a great choice and i've had other

37:05people

37:06you know i the reason i started bringing

37:07this up is i started getting phone calls

37:09with people being in it

37:10and they had concerns um but i wanted to

37:12get someone who's currently in it their

37:14thoughts and again

37:15this comes down to every personal that

37:17person that's individual you know like

37:18i always just say when you're truly

37:20highly motivated

37:22person i don't know if i would go that

37:24route because

37:25you're already going to be putting in

37:26all this work and my joke has always

37:28been

37:28if you want to learn anatomy go buy a

37:30book for 200 bucks exactly

37:32and teach yourself anatomy or do the

37:34best thing youtube

37:35university you know like youtube has so

37:37much great content that you can learn

37:39um so much or my my favorite what i will

37:42say till i'm dead

37:43is reach out to the people doing the job

37:45right now because they're gonna tell you

37:47what they need and what they don't need

37:48and that's

37:49that's just what i did and there's going

37:50to be people again

37:52where they went to medical sales college

37:54and they're going to have their opinion

37:55and people who didn't go to medical

37:56sales college and have their opinion

37:58um just like anything with adp no sales

38:01experience you know

38:03everybody's gonna have a different

38:04opinion so i really just wanna

38:06keep restating that there is no right or

38:09wrong

38:09answer whatever you do it's just what's

38:11right for you at the time

38:13if you wanna maybe take a little longer

38:14time and go get sales experience

38:15somewhere else

38:16if you to spend a little more money but

38:18get you know like she said connections

38:20and networking and learning

38:21about the industry that you probably

38:23didn't know before um or if it's like

38:25hey

38:25like even with myself i knew i was going

38:27to work harder because i didn't have

38:28sales experience

38:29but also understanding it might take me

38:31way longer you know maybe i could have

38:32gone to medical sales college and i

38:33would have broken after three months

38:35instead of me with no sales experience

38:36and breaking in six months or

38:38a year or two years you know there's no

38:40right or wrong answer it's just what you

38:42guys feel

38:42comfortable with doing and that's the

38:45thing i just want to restating i just

38:46want to bring people on the get or bring

38:48guests on

38:49that can offer as much insight and

38:51information to you that's listening

38:53because i'm really hoping

38:54if you're that person on the fence and

38:56you're like i don't know what i should

38:58do that this podcast helps you make a

38:59decision that you feel at peace with

39:01and that's every single time we do one

39:03of these podcasts that's that's my goal

39:04is just to help

39:06educate people and just hopefully get

39:08insight for whatever decision that

39:09they're looking for

39:11so again lauren i appreciate you so much

39:14just coming

39:15on um again i hope classes continue to

39:21to hear

39:22you know when lauren's talking when

39:23she's here she's happy she's got good

39:29want to work with people they like and

39:31the people are going to make an impact

39:32and that's how you can tell when you're

39:33going through this interview process and

39:35also that

39:36lauren's already doing the work she's

39:37reaching out to people you know like she

39:39called me that's how we connected

39:41you know she found me and we we started

39:42talking and so that's my thing to

39:44everybody no matter what you're doing no

39:46matter what route you're doing you got

39:47to put in the work

39:48to get get where you're going and that's

39:50why lauren
