0:03sales i

0:04am your host jacob mclaughlin and today

0:06i am

0:07so excited to bring you guys our guest

0:10today we have the honor of having

0:12jonathan shy

0:13on our podcast and jonathan is someone

0:16who is still

0:18in college and just accepted

0:21a job offer with one of the top medical

0:23device sales companies

0:25in the world and that's just super

0:27exciting first off and two

0:29it's incredible i've never heard of that

0:31happening so we're excited

0:33to have jonathan on to share his story

0:35and share how he still has college left

0:37but he accepted a job with a top company

0:40in the world and see what that looks

0:41like for him so

0:42jonathan thank you so much for taking

0:44time out of your day to hop on the

0:45podcast with us

0:47thanks for having me on jacob yes man

0:49dude so you're

0:51you're 22 you're still in college and

0:53yet you just landed an associate job

0:55with one of the top companies in the

0:56world

0:57kind of tell us about that how did you

0:59how did you handle that with

1:00you know a lot of times they want that

1:01four-year degree a lot of times they

1:03want that sales experience

1:04so how did you come in here being

1:07in college still and get a job offer

1:11yeah well thanks again jacob for having

1:13me on i think the biggest thing with

1:15these kind of roles is you you really

1:17gotta want it you gotta show your drive

1:19um i think the biggest thing especially

1:21with medical device um

1:22it's hard to get in um there's and

1:24there's a lot of requirements uh when

1:26you look at job listings it's going to

1:27say a lot of times you know two years of

1:30orthopedic surgery experience at least

1:32like

1:33like three years of um b2b or you got to

1:36be in medical sales college

1:38but i think the biggest thing is that if

1:39you're a top performer it doesn't matter

1:41what kind of background you've had

1:43what kind of requirements you've filled

1:45um there's always space there's always a

1:47space for a top performer it doesn't

1:48matter

1:49um what you've done um yeah i'm still in

1:52college i

1:53they actually moved the requirements

1:55around just for me because um they saw

1:58that i'm gonna be graduating um

2:00in about a month and a half i haven't

2:02even graduated yet but

2:03um they said as long as you finish your

2:05graduation which i'm on track for you

2:07you're you're hired on um but the

2:09biggest thing is you

2:11they they're not gonna just hire anyone

2:13um if you're a top performer like i said

2:15um you're gonna get hired on but you

2:17really gotta show that drive

2:19and it comes down to research knowing

2:21knowing what you want

2:23learning about what you need to know um

2:25and i think that's the biggest thing

2:26um and thankfully they saw something in

2:29me um

2:30even not not having a lot of the you

2:32know the b2b experience not even

2:34finishing college yet but uh yeah i'm

2:37excited for

2:37to land the opportunity that i have and

2:40uh yeah i'm really i'm really glad that

2:42i'm where i'm at

2:43that's awesome man and again

2:44congratulations on landing that job

2:46that's absolutely huge and

2:48and like you said uh for everyone

2:50listening out there right they can tell

2:52when you're different they can tell when

2:53you're hungry they can tell when you're

2:54gonna go and make a difference out there

2:56and that's something even just the first

2:58couple minutes of you talking man you

3:00have that high energy you have that you

3:01know you're gonna come in and

3:02you're you're sure of yourself and that

3:04makes a huge difference when you're

3:06going through this interview process

3:07when you know who you are

3:08and what you're going to do when you get

3:10in and again we know we're going to have

3:12a lot to learn but when you're confident

3:13you're like i don't care what the

3:14obstacle is i'm going to figure it out

3:16that goes a long way so taking a step

3:18back jonathan how did you

3:20find medical device sales what what made

3:22you attracted to medical device sales

3:25while you're still in college

3:26what was like hey that's the career path

3:28i want to go towards right now

3:31yeah so i've always been an athlete uh

3:33might have not been the best athlete but

3:35uh

3:36throughout high school i played baseball

3:38and basketball

3:39um so unfortunately i've gone through uh

3:41three major surgeries unfortunately one

3:43um i've torn

3:44i don't know how this was possible i

3:45tore the acl in both knees on separate

3:47occasions

3:48um one through uh baseball one in

3:50basketball and i've also

3:52dislocated uh my ankle so i had to get

3:55uh um

3:56i don't even really know what it's

3:57called but i have a lot i have a huge

3:59scar

3:59on the left side of my ankle so i've

4:02gone through my share of surgeries and

4:04you know with

4:04that you're you're you're working with i

4:07mean you're not really working with

4:08you're getting operated on

4:09um by uh surgeons obviously and the

4:12first time i've actually

4:13seen or heard anything about the

4:14industries i i saw people

4:16walking in and out of the the clinics

4:18when i was going for checkups getting um

4:20seeing the orthopedic surgeons i see

4:22people walking in with suits and stuff i

4:24asked my surgeon like are those are

4:25those guys just like coming from work or

4:27they're like are those like

4:28who are they and they're like oh that's

4:30that that's my rep and i was like

4:32oh what and then apparently that was one

4:34of uh hit the reps that

4:36was actually in my case um doing when i

4:39was when i was having my acl surgery so

4:40i kind of learned about that i learned

4:42about the company that that rep was from

4:44and kind of learned about that industry

4:45because while um it was a difficult and

4:48hard

4:49experience for me dealing with the acl

4:51surgery it was

4:52it was gratifying to know that there are

4:54people out there that are providing

4:56products for these surgeons to to help

4:59people get back on their feet again and

5:00i felt

5:01with that and the opportunity to to do

5:03the same and give back to people

5:05um would be something i want to be a

5:07part of and i've i continue to do

5:09research

5:10um i'll give a big shout out to there's

5:12one podcast of what

5:13coming up through college that's really

5:15helped me uh his name is colby wood with

5:17the medical sales certification podcast

5:19learned a lot through that he was one of

5:21the uh first first few

5:23persons i've ever heard talk about the

5:25the industry and what it's like and

5:26learning

5:27more about that and then i found found

5:29you and

5:30also found um scott and sarah on legacy

5:32now coaching and just

5:34all really came together the perfect

5:36time with um this is my senior year

5:38of college and i was looking to break

5:40into the industry and i was going to do

5:42whatever it takes and

5:43you guys came along on youtube and it's

5:46history ever since but

5:47yeah it's really excited i love it man

5:49yeah and funny enough colby was actually

5:51who i

5:52started when i did he was the only thing

5:53person that i knew at the time that had

5:55anything else so that's

5:56you know i deep dived listened to all

5:58100 of them and then you know scott and

6:00sarah like you said

6:00love those guys and being able to have

6:02their advice because scott's been in the

6:04industry for so long same with sarah

6:06so they give a different aspect but yeah

6:08it's awesome that you're able to use

6:10these resources that

6:11we go and again just fine tune it to

6:14what works for you right when we say

6:16this stuff it's just

6:17general and then you have to put your

6:18own scenario in it

6:20and make that happen so again that's

6:22amazing that you were able to

6:24see it at such a young age because like

6:25i said as you can have seen my story i

6:27didn't even figure out what this was

6:28until last year and i'm 25 now i'm 26

6:31you know so being able to see it at such

6:33a young age that's super great

6:35um so now getting more into that

6:37interview process can you kind of give

6:39give us a deep dive you know how many

6:41companies did you really like

6:42interview with and then how did how do

6:44you feel like you stood out to

6:45you know be one of the top candidates

6:47when you were going through these

6:48interviews

6:50yeah so for me um i interviewed with the

6:53company that i

6:54interned with uh interned with this past

6:56summer so i interviewed with them and i

6:58also interviewed with

6:59for two opportunities um with with the

7:02same company that i'm at right now

7:03and um so while i didn't have that many

7:07interviews i kind of i was confident in

7:09myself because i knew

7:10i knew what i wanted and it actually i

7:13felt pushed me to really

7:15give it all i had in these in these

7:17three different interview opportunities

7:18because i knew

7:19this this was it if i wanted to break in

7:21this is my chance you know the longer

7:23that you wait

7:24a year waiting another year and b to be

7:26and you even mentioned you you might go

7:27to

7:28go to the b2b route and you don't

7:29perform there and then you got to answer

7:31those numbers yep

7:32i was just thinking about all the

7:34different situations if i don't get this

7:36role so

7:36um i did have three interviews but i

7:38felt like that um

7:40just put focusing on those three really

7:42pushed me

7:44as hard as i could and i prepared as

7:46hard as i could during these quarantine

7:48months

7:48um and was able to land two different

7:51offers at

7:52the company i'm with and one of the

7:54other companies that i interviewed with

7:56um and really really excited it was

7:59definitely

8:00um not easy process but

8:03like you said this if you want it you

8:05really really gotta show and they could

8:07they can read it i mean they're these

8:08are sales people they

8:09they know how people interact they know

8:12how they can read body language they can

8:13they can hear your tone

8:14yeah you really gotta want it they'll

8:17see it

8:18i love them i love that man yeah and

8:20again that you got more than one offer

8:21that's huge right when i talk to people

8:23they're just trying to die to get one

8:24off or when you can say you got more

8:25than one offer that's incredible so

8:27again congratulations sounds like you

8:29definitely crushed it now to get those

8:30offers right

8:31just digging even deeper like what were

8:33some of the strategies you did like for

8:35me it was the the excel sheet right it

8:37was reaching out to all these people

8:38it was making the business plan that's

8:40what i felt made me stand out when i

8:42went through this interview process

8:44can you give us some of maybe the tips

8:45that you did that made you stand out

8:48when you were going through this

8:49interview process compared to the other

8:50people that you were going up against

8:53yeah so i mean the thing that you did

8:54with the excel sheet and reaching out to

8:57how many features you reach out to man

8:58that was three three thousand is

9:00uh over three thousand people is what i

9:02reached out to in about five and a half

9:04months

9:04my goodness that is crazy i actually so

9:07i heard when i heard you

9:08say that the first time my dad really

9:10put a light bulb in my head so i

9:11actually did

9:12a similar thing to you um just because i

9:14wanted to understand the industry and i

9:15think

9:16people are always not people could never

9:18knock someone that wants to do more work

9:20and just wants to learn yeah exactly and

9:22so i reached out to

9:23i think i reached out to over a couple

9:25couple hundred um and i got in contact

9:28and got

9:28phone calls with about 40 40 different

9:30reps love that

9:32and i think uh the biggest thing for me

9:34was that not just getting

9:36you know the 40 40 reps when i was

9:37telling the interviewees talking about

9:39how i was reaching out across the

9:41sales force between the different

9:43companies learning about the industry

9:45just telling them what i actually

9:47learned and how i understood

9:48everything in terms of the lifestyle in

9:51terms of the drive that's needed

9:53so that they know i'm prepared they're

9:54not going to have to when they bring me

9:56on board uh worry about

9:58will he be able to adjust to the

9:59lifestyle will he is he a hard worker

10:02i i know this i've heard this from the

10:04reps and

10:05um i i'm ready to go i'm not i'm not

10:07going to have to

10:08go through a whole onboarding period

10:10where i'm trying to figure out

10:12what i have to wake up for this or why

10:14do i have what do this

10:15like for the 10th time because i've

10:17heard it and if

10:19you know if i didn't hear the right

10:20thing you know honestly if i didn't hear

10:22the

10:22something from the reps that i was

10:24talking to i would be honest and

10:26maybe i wouldn't be in this place but

10:28after hearing exactly what the lifestyle

10:30is like

10:30after hearing exactly what um this job

10:33entails i it just wanted me to

10:35i wanted it more yeah i kind of just

10:38described that

10:39with the interviews so definitely the

10:41networking the networking aspect and

10:44another thing too if you've got a with

10:46the networking aspect that i learned too

10:47is that you've got to

10:49be able you've got you've got to be

10:51willing to learn i think a lot of the

10:52times people will message message around

10:55but it's like they're messaging around

10:57for help but

10:58it's more like they kind of just want

11:00things handed to them 100

11:02yep they want that handout yeah people

11:05will think that oh

11:06i'm i'm going on my way to message you

11:08for for help

11:09um he'll probably just give me a job oh

11:12yeah i know this guy yeah

11:13yeah here's a job here's an interview no

11:15it's not like that you really gotta

11:17you really gotta push and that's why you

11:19gotta you gotta talk you gotta talk to a

11:20lot of people because it just takes one

11:22just one one manager is a that's like

11:25you know okay i'll take a chance on you

11:27know what uh

11:28you you got it you might not have this

11:29or this but um

11:31i think we can mold you to a good rep so

11:33it's it's a

11:34it's kind of a numbers game but you need

11:36to make the most out of those phone

11:37calls because they are

11:38these reps are taking the time out of

11:40their day when they could be

11:42game planning for the next surgeon or

11:43the next case

11:45um so that comes down to you know

11:47networking work ethic

11:49and really taking the time to understand

11:51industry and just

11:53you really just gotta you really gotta

11:54want it i think that's

11:56thrive is something that you can't teach

11:58it's not something that you go to you

11:59know target and buy

12:00an extra pack for the next week i guess

12:02you could buy coffee but

12:05you might be excited and that's

12:08something else that's not

12:09the right uh energy but yeah it you

12:11really gotta want it

12:13and it the biggest these people can read

12:15it it's not like

12:16you you can't you can't fake it um and

12:19that's that's

12:20heard from you i've heard from a lot of

12:21other people and um

12:24that that might mean you have to you

12:26know while

12:27at dinner you might have to be listening

12:29to podcasts instead of watching the uh

12:31um the mlb or nfl game you might need to

12:34be

12:35you know while you're taking a shower

12:36listening to a podcast

12:38instead of maybe i don't know all right

12:39you don't have to do that but what i'm

12:41saying is that you really gotta

12:42find ways to really prepare and put give

12:45it all you got because when you get

12:47these interview opportunities you're not

12:48just they're not gonna come

12:50back every year and ask you if you want

12:51to interview again you get an interview

12:52opportunity

12:53if you don't if you don't if you don't

12:54take it and you don't show them what you

12:56got

12:57this one time they're not that's it

12:59you're not going to have a chance

13:00probably

13:01ever again um unless who knows i mean

13:04i guess i guess they could but i mean

13:06after they've seen it one time

13:08they're usually not going to give you

13:09another chance they're going to find

13:09somebody else well even if it is

13:12even if they do give it to you another

13:13chance it's probably a year or two from

13:14now when

13:15that other person didn't work out you

13:16know so it would take way more time

13:19exactly so you really gotta you really

13:22gotta put all you got into it and make

13:24the best of the time that's why

13:25networking really helps and

13:26the work ethic aspect but yeah i love

13:29that man and then you're so right

13:31everything you said is 100 true and i

13:33tell people right

13:34when i was coming in i reached out to so

13:36many people to separate myself like you

13:38said right

13:39nobody was going to touch my numbers

13:41nobody was going to spend the eight

13:42hours to make the business plans that i

13:44did right like

13:45you have to want it so much and i

13:47sacrificed i

13:48when i'm a type a when i do something

13:50i'm a thousand percent in

13:52i'm like almost psycho to the level i'll

13:55go to be successful

13:56and and they see that right and they

13:58knew like my managers that all offered

13:59me the job said

14:00you we know when we're not even

14:02questioning if you're going to make an

14:03impact we know you will

14:05right and they say see the same thing

14:07and you and what you just said

14:09at the beginning of when we started

14:10talking about this about

14:12when you're reaching out to the reps

14:13this is what i say a million times but

14:16the reps are your key because they're

14:18going to tell you everything you need to

14:20know

14:20they're going to tell you the good part

14:22of the job the bad part of the job

14:24they're going to tell you how much money

14:25you can make

14:26how much you might not make they're

14:28going to tell you what your best

14:29products are what your

14:30worst products are they're going to tell

14:31you who the competitors are what the

14:33market share is

14:34they are your cheat sheet and if you're

14:36this is a job you want to do

14:38why would you not talk to the person

14:40who's going to tell you exactly what

14:41your life is going to be like

14:43so that is a that's a great point that's

14:45why you want to be reaching out to these

14:46reps

14:47and then also like you said when you are

14:49talking to these reps

14:51my job as a rep is to teach i teach

14:53doctors i teach scrub techs i teach

14:55nurses right

14:56we want to teach that is part of the job

14:59so if you can come in and you're

15:00new and you want to learn it we're happy

15:02to tell you and that's why i do this

15:03podcast i want to teach people that are

15:05willing to learn

15:06but like you said when you come in and

15:08you're just looking for a gram

15:10a grab a handout we can tell that as

15:12well too because we're sales people

15:13right

15:14and so if you are that person listening

15:16to this podcast right now

15:18and you're like hey i'm doing what i

15:19need to i'm reaching out to people

15:21but you're just doing it halfway or

15:23you're doing it selfishly to be like

15:25you know i still get messages that are

15:27people like hey do you know of any jobs

15:28you can han uh you can refer me to

15:31be like and and again i i'm always nice

15:33and i'm respectful when i'm like no i

15:34don't know any

15:35but here's really what's going on in my

15:36mind why would i give you a job why

15:39would i tell you a job that's your job

15:40to figure out if there's a job opening

15:42you know and that's really what these

15:44most reps uh think about so

15:46i love that you went there man that you

15:48talked about against your drive but when

15:50you are coming out it's exactly what i

15:51used to say

15:52i always asked the rep what i could

15:53learn from them and also being curious

15:55because

15:55that's what taught me the difference

15:57between trauma and capital and

15:59orthopedics and gyn

16:01it taught me all the different regions

16:03by talking to all these people

16:05and being able to fit what lifestyle i

16:06would like or how much money i could

16:08make and

16:09and all the good and the bad that would

16:10come with it as well

16:13100 i like that i like that a lot jacob

16:16yeah i appreciate it yeah so

16:17again jonathan that's that's an amazing

16:19advice what you're giving and

16:20and again we're just so excited to have

16:22someone with your drive again you guys

16:24if you're listening to this

16:25again this is a dude who's not even out

16:27of college who had got multiple job

16:29offers with top medical device companies

16:31right and you can hear the energy the

16:34difference when you're hearing him talk

16:36and that's what i always tell people

16:37when you're going up into these

16:38interviews

16:39would you want to go up against jonathan

16:41would you want to go up against me

16:42and that's not a knock on us or to you

16:45it's really

16:46we're the people getting the job offers

16:48right that's what you have to beat out

16:50and so that's why i always tell people i

16:51just said this three times this week to

16:53people who called me it's

16:54would you want to go up against you in a

16:56job interview you know like

16:57if we're going to the end of it have you

17:00researched as many people that i did

17:01did you reach out to as many people did

17:03you have eight people calling the

17:04manager that final week

17:06telling them to vote for jacob did you

17:08have it doing for that to you

17:10you know like are you doing the above

17:11and beyond to show why you're the right

17:13candidate

17:14and that's that's a that's a hard

17:15question to ask because it's you really

17:17got to face yourself

17:18because if you're not you're not getting

17:19those job offers and you're not getting

17:20the job interview so

17:22this is some like uh soul searching when

17:24we're doing that

17:25um but jonathan now getting into that

17:27final part man like

17:28if you could talk to anybody that's

17:30going to reach out because people will

17:31reach out they'll see this video they'll

17:33be like man jonathan's a driven dude i

17:34want to

17:35i want to talk to him i want to figure

17:37out what's in his brain which you've

17:38already shared right

17:39but they think there's going to be some

17:40extra that they can find

17:42what advice would you give to someone

17:44who is hungry they're trying to break in

17:46maybe they're in college maybe they're

17:47out of college maybe they have sales

17:48experience maybe they don't

17:50what can they do that you feel would

17:52help them

17:53get a job interview land a job what

17:55would your advice be to

17:56those people well the first thing i

17:59think is you've got to make sure that

18:01you know what you're getting into

18:02because you could go into all this and

18:04you'd be you might get on a call with

18:05the rep and realize this might not be it

18:07so make sure

18:08this is what you want to get into and

18:10then if this is what you want to get

18:12into

18:13make sure to go to the extra mile with

18:15everything not just

18:16um maybe reaching out to reps or

18:19doing homework on an area everything you

18:22do making a business plan like you said

18:24um finding out every single um

18:27everything you can about

18:29the the industry or the company that

18:31you're going to

18:32every single thing you've it comes down

18:34to every single detail because

18:36when these managers are interviewing you

18:38they're gonna they're gonna push you

18:39they're really gonna

18:40challenge you because they know how it

18:42is in the when you're working with

18:43surgeons and doctors

18:44um they don't care who you are they

18:46don't care what company you work for if

18:48you're not

18:49if you're not ready to go but they're

18:51not going to work with you because this

18:52is

18:52these are high high high risk high

18:56expensive very just big big cases that

18:59they need to work on they need someone

19:00that they can trust

19:02so if if if you want it then really go

19:05for it you got it you got

19:06you've got to show your drive no matter

19:08how it is um

19:10you've got to sacrifice and you've got

19:12to realize that

19:13this might be your only chance have that

19:15mindset this this is your only chance

19:17imagine that um i don't i don't know a

19:21great analogy but like this is your

19:23last chance to get something on uh your

19:26last chance to cross the finish line

19:27and if you don't get it the they closed

19:29they're closing the the gates or

19:30something like that that's yeah

19:32believe me leave no stone unturned is

19:35really what you're

19:35you're saying and that was that was

19:37something i always said don't leave any

19:38stone unturned and here's a good way to

19:40think of it

19:40you're talking about an analogy if i can

19:42help out a little bit is

19:44this is a job that's going to make you

19:45over six figures right

19:47you're going to be in the one person

19:48like the top 10 percent of what

19:50americans make

19:51right this is your chance for it now if

19:54you want to be in the top 10 percent of

19:55what americans make you got to do what

19:5710 the top 10 percent of people would do

19:59you can't be like the 90

20:01because that's not good enough

20:04100 you've got to you if you want a job

20:08that's in the top 10

20:09you've got to work like someone that's

20:10in the top 10 percent you see people

20:12with all these

20:13great titles and all these great jobs

20:15but you don't know what they put in

20:16and you but you've got to do you've got

20:18to do what they did to get to where they

20:20are you can't just look at

20:21that title and oh wow i wish i was there

20:24what okay do it

20:25like this is your chance so yeah don't

20:27leave any stones unturned that's a great

20:29thing

20:29um yeah you've got to show your drive in

20:31every single aspect doing your research

20:34um i would get the book that you have i

20:36think 20

20:37or an investment in a job um in a career

20:40that

20:41could set you for life i mean my

20:43goodness that's that's a great deal i

20:45mean

20:46great research and that's five six eight

20:49a year

20:50years worth of research in a book that

20:52could really set you up so

20:54that that's another part of the drive

20:55you've gotta you've gotta tap into every

20:57resource possible to make sure that you

20:59do all you can to present

21:00to these managers that i'm the candidate

21:02it doesn't matter that there's other

21:04100 other candidates 200 other

21:05candidates i'm the one i'm the one

21:07they're competing against me

21:08so i love that jonathan you hit you hit

21:11the nail on the head right there man

21:13you are the one right when you're coming

21:15to that you almost have to have that

21:16chip on the shoulders like

21:18and that and that was a chip i always

21:19told people right that's why i make the

21:21comment of would you want to go up

21:22against you in an interview right

21:23i knew i wasn't competing with other

21:26reps i was competing with me when i went

21:27into the interview process

21:29hey how can i show why i'm the best one

21:31and these guys are they're not going to

21:33match what i can bring in and again

21:34that's a there's a cockiness there's a

21:36confident

21:36that's the athlete in me right but i'll

21:38be real as you know and as you're going

21:40to find out

21:41when you're dealing with high-end

21:42doctors doing over millions of dollars

21:44worth of volume

21:45you're dealing with some egos and you

21:47got to be able to control a room you got

21:48to be able to

21:49take some and give some you know so like

21:52that's they want to see that when you're

21:53going into these interviews as well

21:55because

21:56like i try to tell everybody medical

21:58device sales is amazing

22:00but it's not sunshine and rainbows all

22:01the time there's sometimes it gets

22:03pretty intense there's names getting

22:04called

22:05and you're having to de-escalate

22:07situations or you have to step up to the

22:09plate

22:10and and you have to come in so again you

22:12have to be a certain type of person that

22:15can be the most genuine person and nice

22:18but also be able to uh perform really

22:21well under a high stress

22:23situation and get results even though it

22:26may not look so great in the room at the

22:28time so

22:29again jonathan that that's great advice

22:31man and again we just want to say thank

22:32you for

22:33coming on i have no doubt in my mind

22:35after talking with you today
