0:00Courtney Black, we need to have a word.
0:02>> Low calorie foods are not your friends.
0:04>> Today, I'm here to help you understand
0:05about the science to do with artificial
0:07sweeteners. And again, I know that you
0:09hate me at the moment. About 2 years
0:11ago, I did make a very insensitive pop
0:13to the fact that you've been caught
0:14editing your photos online. I apologize.
0:16I was drunk. Now, let's look at your
0:18most recent reel.
0:19>> And wonder why I had gut issues. I
0:21wasn't seeing results in my stomach.
0:23>> So, there are two claims here. One, that
0:25sweeteners are bad for fat loss. you
0:27will just see the weight fall off and
0:28you will be so much healthier and feel
0:31so much leaner.
0:32>> And the second thing is that sweeteners
0:34disrupt your gut.
0:35>> The amount of sweetener that I was
0:36having in my diet, my gut bacteria was
0:39being so affected by it.
0:40>> Let's first of all start off with
0:42artificial sweeteners and obesity. But
0:43just before we get into the real
0:44evidence about sweeteners, you have
0:46endorsements with Oxy Shred and that has
0:48artificial sweeteners in
0:50[Music]
0:52my life.
0:53>> And there are people within your fitness
0:54community, you know that group you have
0:55with 73,000 members, which is very
0:58impressive, by the way, that are buying
0:59Oxy Shred with sweeteners in it in a bid
1:01to lose weight, which I thought it
1:02stopped doing. Now, you could defend
1:04yourself and say, "Oh, I haven't
1:05endorsed Oxy Shred in a year." Fine. But
1:06if we go to the link in your bio, you
1:08have things on your Amazon store of
1:10which you get commission. One of which
1:12being Monin premium vanilla sugar-free
1:14syrup, which again contains artificial
1:16sweeteners. So just before we get into
1:18the evidence, surely if you were that
1:19against artificial sweeteners, you would
1:21take down the products of which you get
1:22commission of when people buy them. And
1:24both of which those two contain
1:25sucralose, which is an artificial
1:27sweetener. Another claim you made in
1:28your video is you will be so much
1:29healthier and so much leaner if you give
1:31up artificial sweeteners. Let's look
1:33into the evidence. We have a study here
1:34of the effects of non-nutritive
1:36sweeteners on body weight and BMI. And
1:37as we can see down the bottom here,
1:39participants who were overweight or
1:40obese and adults showed significant
1:42favorable weight and BMI differences
1:44with non-nutritive sweeteners. In fact,
1:46there's quite a lot of evidence that
1:47says that having non-nutritive
1:49sweeteners can actually benefit fat
1:50loss. And I think it goes without saying
1:52that if you were to pick a Coke Zero to
1:54get a fix for your sweet tooth and have
1:56something that doesn't have calories in,
1:57it's a bit of a no-brainer. But now,
1:58let's get into the other point about
1:59sweeteners being terrible for your gut,
2:01which is the main point of your video. I
2:03believe I can pretty much guarantee that
2:04you'll be quoting a study from 2014 done
2:07by Suezatal where we start to see a bit
2:10of sweeteners causing genuine gut
2:13dysfunction. But there's a problem. This
2:14study was done in rodents. So if you are
2:17a rat probably have something to worry
2:19about. Now being a personal trainer,
2:21there are several people in the industry
2:22that you can go to very quickly. We've
2:24got Mike Israel, Lane Norton, Menow
2:26Henzelman's, and even recently Menow has
2:28gone to the lengths of creating amazing
2:30articles to go through all the nuance of
2:32artificial sweeteners. In this one, he
2:33goes through every single type of
2:34artificial sweetener and the genuine
2:36effects that it has on the gut. It's
2:37could have taken you 2 minutes. And then
2:39even he comes with receipts and points
2:41us in the direction of studies that we
2:42can go and look at. For instance, this
2:44recent study, randomized double blinded
2:47crossover clinical trials. and I quote,
2:49"In conclusion, our study showed that
2:51aspartame and sucralose did not cause
2:53measurable changes in the gut microbiota
2:55after 14 days of realistic daily intake
2:58in healthy participants. And this is in
3:00contrast to many of the microbiome
3:01studies conducted in animal models.
3:03However, with all animal models, their
3:05applicability to human health and
3:07disease may be limited." And the last
3:09point is this. Of course, the majority
3:11of obese people are going to have the
3:12sweetened version. Of course, they're
3:13going to reach for the Diet Coke or the
3:15Coke Zero. They're obese. But just cuz
3:16we can find an association between
3:18sweeteners and obese people, it doesn't
3:20mean it's the causator of it. You are
3:21welcome to have your anecdotal
3:23experiences however you want. But when
3:25you make blanket statements that are
3:26false, that could be easily researched
3:28and that could mislead people to
3:29actually make their journey of improving
3:31their gut health or becoming less obese
3:33more difficult, you're going to get
3:34called out. You could have found all of
3:35this out within four minutes on Google.
3:37Please don't be everything that's wrong
3:38with the fitness industry. Hope we can
3:39make up and be friends again soon. All
3:40right.
