0:00in the last episode oda nobunaga

0:02attempted to solidify his authority over

0:05central japan by going to war against

0:07the Asaka clan however in betrayal by

0:10the SI clan to whom his sister was

0:12married would inevitably lead to the

0:14massive battle of panic our Babu naga

0:17would come out victorious yet he now

0:19found himself surrounded by enemies and

0:21now with an ever growing tension boiling

0:24over the central region he must contend

0:26with his rivals and ensure the stability

0:28of his newfound power

0:58what had once been a manageable

1:00situation for Oda Nobunaga

1:02had now turned into a precarious one by

1:051570 the ODA clan and now rested between

1:08enemies to the north and enemies to the

1:10west along with the threat of the

1:12radical eco Yuki sprinkled within

1:14luckily Nobunaga was surrounded by

1:17competent and loyal commanders who each

1:19exhibited the very finest of strategic

1:21thought and battlefield heroism found

1:23throughout feudal Japan I have touched

1:25on many of his retainers before figures

1:28such as shibata katsuie Maya dato see a

1:32newa naga heeda and hashiba Hideyoshi

1:36yet another prominent figure was about

1:38to enter the mix akechi mitsuhide a if

1:42we remember back to episode 22

1:44Mitsu Heda had been instrumental in

1:46getting a Shi kaga yoshiji aki to reach

1:48out to Nobunaga granting him that

1:50justification he needed for his march on

1:52the capital thus Nobunaga owed much of

1:55his current power to me to heed a in

1:58return

1:59Mitsuki day had become one of Nobunaga's

2:01senior tanners and one of the more

2:03important figures leading Nobunaga's

2:05armies against his foes to the west for

2:08the most part the main threat to the oda

2:09rule in the West was the Miyoshi clan

2:12who had previously held the highest

2:14amount of influence over Kyoto and the

2:16ashikaga shogunate yes ever since the

2:18death of their former Dom yo Yoshi Naga

2:21Yoshi in 1564 the clan had become

2:24disjointed and feeble so much so that

2:27they were unable to stop the oda from

2:29sweeping them out of the capital and

2:30were now being slowly pushed out of

2:32Honshu by Nobunaga's armies however this

2:35also brought the oda

2:36closer to another major threat the main

2:39power base of the eco a key at a Shyama

2:42hongan-ji in modern-day osaka

2:44the radical followers of the Georgian

2:47Chu faith known as the eco Ikki had

2:49established control over a plethora of

2:51locations and although they were not

2:53formally linked together it can be seen

2:55that they all upheld the same mindsets

2:57and stood together against common

2:59enemies the eco Ricky had become a

3:02larger nuisance to the oda than many of

3:04their actual clan rivals by the 15

3:07the Eko Ikki had become a major

3:09powerhouse throughout central Japan even

3:11ruling over the entirety of kaga

3:13province to the north this was due to

3:16their various temples which acted as

3:18hubs of influence their strong

3:20economical power having control over

3:22many important trade routes and their

3:24appeal to all the suppressed lower

3:26classes of society attracting anyone

3:28from Ronin to peasant they were vicious

3:31Hornets who every damn you feared and

3:33their most formidable nest was known to

3:36be the most heavily fortified temple in

3:38the entire country

3:39Yama honganji boo boo Naga knew the eco

3:44Ichi needed to be eradicated if he was

3:46to have any semblance of stability over

3:48the kinky region thus in August of 1570

3:52roughly a month after his victories at a

3:54nagawa Nobunaga and Mitsuki they began

3:56efforts to lay siege to Yama honganji

3:59he ordered the construction of various

4:02fortifications around the vast complex

4:04to which the eco iki forces responded by

4:08launching a massive night raid against

4:10Oda positions a month later severely

4:12weakening the cease lines and allowing

4:14the warrior monks to continue to hold

4:16out it should also be noted that the eco

4:19Ricky had heavily adopted the use of

4:21Western firearms and began using them

4:23impressively behind their fortified

4:25walls of Ishiyama honganji the monks

4:27were able to effectively use their

4:29matchlock temple to formally hold off

4:31any attempt by the hora to assault the

4:33fortress this may have left a lasting

4:35impact on Nobunaga who was an ardent

4:38practitioner of Western firearms himself

4:40as the way in which the monks used their

4:43tempo behind fortifications proved to be

4:46devastatingly efficient this ensured

4:49that the siege of eeschema hongan-ji

4:51would continue indefinitely yet the

4:53warrior monks of Hongwanji were not the

4:55only militant hauled out of monks that

4:57had earned Nobunaga's aggression a year

5:00prior he had lost a battle to the monks

5:02of holgie a castle resulting in the

5:04death of his brother Oda and of walky

5:06and two other sites he would come to

5:08battle the monks at would-be Mount Hiei

5:10and Nakashima and it is the story of

5:13Mount Hiei that can be seen as a turning

5:16point for Nobunaga and the most brutal

5:18in terms of his conflicts

5:20against the monks as the war continued

5:22between the oda and the isaiah sakura

5:25coalition following the Battle of

5:26Onagawa the tain Daiya monks of INRIA

5:29coogee temple atop Mount Hiei had become

5:31equally hostile to the oda

5:33and began lending their support to the

5:35SI and a Sakura

5:37and since Mount Hiei sat literally just

5:40to the north of Kyoto this could not be

5:42allowed as it posed an immediate threat

5:44not only to the capital but also to

5:46Naboo Nagas lines of communication now

5:49before I tell of Nobunaga's actions

5:52against Mount Hiei I want to first give

5:54some brief background information on

5:56Mount Hiei and its significance the

5:59nearly 800 year old temple of Ania

6:01coogee atop Mount Hiei was a cultural

6:03mega center not only was it the

6:06headquarters of the tain dye sect of

6:07Buddhism in Japan but also it's

6:10positioned within the area known as the

6:12demon gate signified that it stood as a

6:15shield protecting the capital from evil

6:17it also housed one of the largest armies

6:20of warrior monks in the entire country

6:22who had frequently marched down to Kyoto

6:25to enforce their religious control over

6:27the city knowing this information may

6:30help us better understand Nobunaga's

6:32next set of actions as what he would do

6:34was completely unexpected perhaps he had

6:38simply grown weary of being constantly

6:40surrounded or maybe he wished to make a

6:43statement against all temples that

6:45opposed him whatever the case what he

6:49would do to Mount Hiei would simply be

6:51remembered as an atrocity in 1571

6:55commanding an army around 30,000 strong

6:58and against the wishes of many of his

7:00retainers Nobunaga ordered the mountain

7:03surrounded he then directed his soldiers

7:06to begin scaling the side of the

7:08mountain killing anyone who stood in

7:10their path once at the top they set fire

7:13to the historic temple and slaughtered

7:15anyone who attempted to flee by the end

7:18anak uji was reduced to ashes and

7:21thousands of civilians and monks alike

7:24were dead

7:26surviving tain died monks would later be

7:28allowed to rebuild in Raqqa G yet Mount

7:31Hiei

7:31would never be able to have an arm

7:33again this is really where we can begin

7:36to see a change within Oda Nobunaga

7:39where previously he could be seen as one

7:42of the more unorthodox leaders in feudal

7:44Japan the massacre at Mount Hiei starts

7:47to showcase a more cruel side to him

7:49that same year Oda forces under the

7:52command of shibata katsuie and Sakuma

7:55Luba Mori also launched the first of

7:57four sieges against the Eco iki

7:59stronghold of Nagashima in Issei

8:01province their first attempt would fail

8:04yet the oda would maintain the pressure

8:07by 1572 back in the capital things were

8:11abysmal between Nobunaga and shogun

8:13Yoshiaki it was clear Yoshiaki was now

8:17desperately reaching out to various

8:19daimyo in attempts to drive out the oda

8:21yet as we have seen thus far no one has

8:24proven capable enough to do so Yoshiaki

8:28needed someone strong a mighty clan that

8:31rivaled the oda in size and number a

8:33clan that could easily reach the oda the

8:37two most realistic candidates for

8:39Yoshiaki were none other than the Mori

8:41clan to the west or the Takeda clan to

8:44the east of the two the Mori were

8:47unlikely to head to war against the oda

8:49just yet and this was for two reasons

8:51first off the more tea were recently at

8:54war with the Otomo clan of Kyushu

8:56another powerhouse to the southwest

8:58however even more pressing was Morimoto

9:01Nuri's failing health by the summer of

9:051571 Motul nadi the great patriarch of

9:08the mori clan who had seen the clan grow

9:10from insignificant to mighty had finally

9:14passed away most likely fearing a drop

9:17in stability if they were to march east

9:19against the Oda molten Oddie's grandson

9:22and current head of the Mori clan Modi

9:24terremoto would decide to ultimately not

9:27move against the aura just yet although

9:29they would inevitably go to war in the

9:33years to come

9:34the story was different to the east as

9:36the Takeda had become arguably the

9:39strongest power east of me no Takeda

9:42Shingen now stood in a prime position to

9:45lead a massive army westward to crush

9:48Nobunaga ultimately we will see that it

9:51is the legendary Takeda Shingen who will

9:54answer yoshi Aki's call for aid and

9:56embark on his own march to the capital

10:00so what can we learn although the oda

10:04faced off against many hostile clans

10:06surrounding the capital

10:08Nobunaga faced an even more insidious

10:10threat in that of the eco Ikki and other

10:13prominent temples that formerly opposed

10:16him this would lead him to lay siege to

10:17the formidable temple fortress of ichi

10:20ama honganji and the temple of Nagashima

10:23in Issei province both initially failing

10:26to capture the fortifications however he

10:29would have far more success at another

10:31location Mount Hiei it was at a Naraku G

10:35temple atop Mount Hiei where he would

10:37commit his most brutal act yet burning

10:39the historic temple and slaughtering

10:41thousands a year later in desperation to

10:44remove Nobunaga from power Shogun

10:47Yoshiaki now reached out to the powerful

10:49mori clan to the west and the mighty

10:51Takeda of the east and although the mori

10:54would soon go to war against the oda it

10:56is Takeda Shingen

10:57who will ultimately take up your

10:59chiaki's cause and begin his campaign

11:01against Nobunaga in the next episode

11:04Takeda Shingen goes to war first

11:07marching against the Tokugawa clan and

11:09engaging Tokugawa Ieyasu at the Battle
