0:55by 1572 the situation in and around the
0:59capital was devastating
1:01Oda Nobunaga the leader of the once
1:03minor power from awadhi province had
1:06risen to prominence and taking kyoto and
1:09the Shogunate captive using his mighty
1:12armies an iron grip
1:13Nobunaga had laid siege to central japan
1:16going to war with all who stood against
1:19him so far we have seen his battles
1:21against the Miyoshi the SI via Sakura
1:24and the radical followers of the journal
1:27Hsinchu faith known as the eco Ikki and
1:30while his followers viewed him as a
1:32visionary trying to unify the land his
1:36enemies
1:37obviously viewed him as a power-hungry
1:39tyrant and no one felt his oppression
1:42more than shogun ashikaga yoshimasa the
1:48capital by Nobunaga yet instead of
1:51simply enjoying the luxury of his
1:53position as Shogun he followed in the
1:55same footsteps as the previous shogun
1:58ashikaga yoshida who had made an attempt
2:01to break the Shogunate free from
2:03external influences Yoshiaki had
2:06initially believed that he was to have
2:08independence and power once he was
2:10formally made the sugar yet in reality
2:13all the power rested in the hands of the
2:16cunning Nobunaga thus for the past
2:19several years Yoshiaki had been reaching
2:22out to many clans in central japan
2:24requesting they take up arms against the
2:27oda
2:27in attempts to drive them out of the
2:29capital however by 1572 we can see that
2:33none have proven capable enough to do so
2:36this leads us to his latest bid reaching
2:40out to the Mori and the Takeda as we
2:43established in the last video the Mori
2:45were unwilling to head to war against
2:47the oda at this time most likely due to
2:50other pressing issues I have previously
2:52highlighted yet the situation was
2:55different for the Takeda in the east the
2:58balance of power had changed drastically
3:00ever since the fall of the
3:03Kawa in 1568 this left the three most
3:06powerful clans in the East the Takeda
3:09the whole Joe and the US we in a
3:11constant state of conflict with the most
3:14noticeable exchange of territory being
3:16the Takeda taking over a portion of
3:19kutsuki and it was the Takeda led by the
3:23legendary Takeda Shingen who now
3:25appeared to be the greatest power in the
3:27East and this was for several reasons
3:30first off was shingen's sphere of
3:33influence controlling three rich
3:35provinces thereby granting him the
3:37capability to field a massive army not
3:40to mention the fact that his clan was
3:42impressively stable even in an age ripe
3:45with internal betrayal however this
3:48stability had not come without
3:49casualties as in 1567 he was forced to
3:53order his firstborn son and heir Takeda
3:56Yoshinobu to commit seppuku following
3:59disagreements between the two and a
4:01failed attempt to rally shingen's loyal
4:03generals against him and seize power
4:06after Yoshino whose death shingen's
4:09somewhat inbred and bastard son takeda
4:12katsuyori now stood to be the heir to
4:14the clan but to add to shingen's
4:17stability he also possessed one of the
4:20finest war bands in the entire country
4:22what had previously been known as the 24
4:25generals of Takeda Shingen had indeed
4:28shrunk over time yet we can still see
4:30important figures such as Baba Luo Haru
4:33Kousaka Masanobu Yamagata Massa cog a
4:37knight Oh Massa Toyo and Sanada ukitake
4:41along with his sons these and other
4:44generals were behind many of shingen's
4:46finest victories and were a prime
4:48example why the Takeda were able to
4:50flourish and grow to their current size
4:53and prominence
4:54although outside of the Takeda clan two
4:57other external factors had also given
4:59rise to shingen's position the most
5:02obvious was the death of Hojo you Jia
5:04soo the Lion of Sagami you Jia su had
5:08been a mighty daimyo maintaining Hojo
5:11rule over Kanto albeit with little
5:14expansion as well
5:15he had frequently fought against the
5:17Takeda and asougi yet in 1570 he finally
5:21passed away fearing a drop in stability
5:24if the Wars continued his son Hojo Yuji
5:28Massa quickly made peace with Shingen
5:30however an arguably greater threat to
5:33the Takeda was the formidable who asougi
5:36Kenshin
5:37who had valiantly fought Shingen to a
5:39standstill years ago at Kiwanuka Jima
5:43yet in recent years it appeared Kenshin
5:46was less inclined to do battle with
5:48Shingen and more interested in expanding
5:51ways to be influenced to the northwest
5:53as by the 1570s we can see that the u.s.
5:56oogi clan had pushed into a Chu
5:58subjugating the local Jinbo clan and
6:01seizing the entirety of the province
6:03although this of course brought kenji
6:06into further conflict against the eco
6:08iki who ruled over the neighboring
6:10province of kaga it is these factors
6:13that may have aided in shingen's
6:15decision to answer Shogun Yoshiaki pleas
6:18for aid however if he was to go to war
6:22with the oda he would first need to deal
6:24with their Tokugawa allies the Takeda
6:27had actually already gone to war with
6:29the Tokugawa in 1571 when she again
6:32began launching attacks against the
6:34Tokugawa fortress of rocket engine thus
6:37continuing a more determined offensive
6:39against them would not be seen as out of
6:41the ordinary on top of that there is
6:44another reason why she can would want to
6:47head west it is clear that Takeda
6:50Shingen for some time now had desired to
6:53rule not just his region but in fact the
6:56entire land
6:57however this dream had become an
6:59unrealistic one due to his current
7:01position in correlation to other
7:03powerful rivals in the east
7:05yet by 1572 with all of the established
7:09reasons I have just listed she again now
7:12possessed the prime capability to bring
7:14war to the oda and perhaps launched a
7:17campaign to seize the entire country for
7:19himself what is also of extreme
7:22importance to note and perhaps an even
7:25greater reason for Shingen to march on
7:27the capital is the fact that
7:29the Takeda clan if need be could trace
7:32their lineage back to the Sehwag ng
7:34branch of the Minamoto clan essentially
7:37meaning that Takeda Shingen could
7:39officially become the new Shogun if he
7:42were to take Kyoto destroy the Ashikaga
7:45and create a Takeda Shogunate of all the
7:50threats
7:50Nobunaga had to face the Takeda would
7:53soon shoot to the forefront as they were
7:56indeed the mightiest of all Nobunaga
7:58rivals beginning in late 1572
8:02Shingen embarked on his grand conquest
8:05against the oda as previously
8:08established his initial task would be to
8:10subdue the Tokugawa clan his first
8:13target would be the Tokugawa mountain
8:15stronghold of futa Mata an ideal spot he
8:18could then use as a base of operations
8:20as he marched against the new Tokugawa
8:23power base of a lamassu Shingen
8:26entrusted his son and heir katsuyori to
8:29seize the castle and it is here that we
8:31can see that katsuyori was actually a
8:33competent commander cutting the water
8:35supply to futa Matta thus causing it to
8:38quickly surrendered to the Takeda by
8:40January of 1573 time yo Tokugawa Ieyasu
8:44was now definitely in a precarious
8:46situation as she again was now marching
8:50through total me at the head of a
8:51massive army numbering around 28,000
8:54strong upon hearing of shingen's advance
8:58Oda Nobunaga quickly sent aid to EI a
9:00Sioux whose numbers now grew to a meager
9:0311000 Shingen understanding his real
9:07target was Nobunaga knew that the
9:09Tokugawa were not capable of stopping
9:11him in the field yet they needed to be
9:14dealt with
9:14nonetheless thus he initially planned on
9:17leaving a token force behind to lay
9:19siege to EA a Sue's stronghold at hammam
9:22Otsu locking the Tokugawa forces down
9:24while his main body pressed forth
9:26against the Oda however in reality
9:30everything solely depended on what
9:32action Ieyasu would take all of the
9:35Tokugawa and reinforcing oda generals
9:38read that defending hammamet's ooh was
9:41their best bet on survival even if she
9:44again left a token force behind to mask
9:46the castle Tokugawa forces stood a
9:49better chance of breaking the siege and
9:51striking out at the Takeda rear than
9:53actually attempting a full assault
9:55against Shingen fighting the Takeda in
9:58the open was also discouraged due to the
10:00growing legend of the Takeda cavalry the
10:03rout shingen's campaigns his cavalry had
10:06gained vast renowned for their skill
10:08ferocity and numbers so much so that
10:12they had earned the nickname the demon
10:14Horseman of Chi striking fear into
10:17anyone who dared face the Takeda in the
10:19field but of course a full frontal
10:22assault was exactly what Yasu had in
10:25mind if one thing could be said about EI
10:27ah su he had a fighting spirit even once
10:31severely disadvantaged he would rather
10:33boldly take the fight to his enemy than
10:35hide behind a wall thus he gave the
10:38order to make ready for battle and
10:40marched out from Hama Matsu to engage
10:42the Takata forces that had been amassing
10:44just to the north at my cottage ihara
10:47Shingen upon hearing of a isues March
10:50immediately deployed his army in a
10:52formation to envelop the Tokugawa as
10:55snow began to fall
10:57On January 25th the battle began the
11:01Tokugawa took the initiative opened
11:03firing on the Takata forward ranks
11:05Ieyasu had hoped that by implementing
11:08mass firearms he would discourage the
11:10use of the Takeda cavalry and at first
11:13it seemed like that might be the case as
11:15she again began his actions by ordering
11:18a general charge of his Vanguard samurai
11:20under the command of NATO Massa Toyo
11:23began clashing with frontline Oda troops
11:26under extreme pressure the Oda to Kujawa
11:28line held strong against the initial
11:31wave of Tokugawa forces yet it was then
11:34that she can only
11:36two waves of his demon horsemen the
11:38first wave was under the command of
11:41Yamagata massa cocky the Takata cavalry
11:44shredded through the oda lines before
11:47pulling out for the second wave led by
11:49takeda katsuyori the second wave crashed
11:52into the Tokugawa main body annihilating
11:55the Tokugawa resolve sending Ieyasu's
11:57forces reeling
11:59Yasu still holding strong attempted to
12:02rally his faltering army yet as his
12:04forces began to break she again paired
12:07down upon him with everything ordering a
12:09full assault of his main body as the
12:12taça de force is closed in on Yasu he
12:14began to engage in melee combat while
12:17desperately attempting to issue commands
12:19seeing the disarray of the situation the
12:22commander ji soo had left in charge of a
12:24mimasu Natsume Yoshinobu quickly wrote
12:28in to convince Ieyasu to call for a full
12:31retreat when Yasir refused Yoshino who
12:34took control of the situation he grabbed
12:36the reins of a awesomes horse and spun
12:38him around he then gave chaos news horse
12:41a hard jab to its rear which caused it
12:43to charge off back towards the castle
12:46Yoshinobu followed this up by attempting
12:48to mislead the Takeda by crying out that
12:51he was Ieyasu and then rushed into the
12:54fray where he would be slain Ieyasu
12:58would make it back into hama Matsu with
13:00a small contingent of samurai
13:02immediately the Tokugawa retainer Corey
13:05motor Tata began barring the main gate
13:07yet it was then that a azu had a
13:10brilliant yet risky idea
13:12he stopped Malhotra from closing the
13:14main gate and instead ordered it to be
13:17kept open for any other survivors in
13:20addition he also ordered bon fires to be
13:22lit in a drum to be played to aid in
13:24guiding his scattered soldiers back home
13:26he knew that this could be regarded by
13:29the Takeda two different ways they could
13:32either see it for what it was an open
13:34invitation to charge in and seize the
13:37castle or with any luck they might
13:40perceive it as a trap and choose not to
13:43engage
13:43fortunately for tae-soo when the Takeda
13:46commanders Baba Nobu Haru and
13:48Agata mas ACOG a closed in on Hama Matsu
13:51they did indeed perceive it as possibly
13:54a trap by the Tokugawa thus deciding to
13:58make camp and watch over the fortress
14:00for any further developments in aims to
14:04drive off this small contingent of
14:06Takeda forces outside of Hama Matsu
14:08Tokugawa forces took action
14:11later that evening launching a
14:13successful night raid catching the
14:15Takeda soldiers off-guard they pushed
14:17them back to a small ravine where many
14:19Takeda troops were trapped and gunned
14:21down by Tokugawa matchlock table with
14:25winter setting in and an unwillingness
14:27to engage in a winter siege now seeing
14:30the baldness of the Tokugawa she again
14:33ordered his forces to return home until
14:35the thaw of spring where he could then
14:37resume his campaign Ieyasu had narrowly
14:41survived and succeeded in temporarily
14:43halting the Takeda advance months later
14:47in the spring of 1573 schengen began a
14:52new campaign against the Tokugawa this
14:55time striking deep into Mikawa once
14:58again the threat of his massive army put
15:00Yasu in a tight position although
15:04tragedy would zoom occur for the Takeda
15:07Takeda Shingen at the height of his
15:10power died some say he had long been ill
15:16and finally succumbed to sickness while
15:19another plausible scenario indicates
15:21that while he was laying siege to the
15:24Tokugawa stronghold of Lora he was shot
15:27by a Tokugawa sniper whatever the case
15:30Shingen was dead and the Takeda were
15:34robbed of their greatest leader
15:37initially
15:38they made attempts to keep shingen's
15:40death a secret in aims to keep his
15:42legendary status and fear he instilled
15:45alive and well yet in time the truth got
15:49out and formally power passed on to his
15:53son takeda katsuyori who maintained his
15:56father's stalwart devotion to march west
15:59and take on the oda
16:01for a final note it is said that upon
16:04hearing of shingen's passing his great
16:07rival Mizuki kenchi who had engaged him
16:10in 5 epic clashes over the cow a
16:12Nakajima plane wept at the loss of such
16:15a worthy adversary
16:18so what can we learn by 1572 a chicago
16:24Yoshiaki was desperately trying to rid
16:27the capital of oda nobunaga reaching out
16:29to powerful lords who could make moves
16:32against the oda in late 1572 the great
16:35Takeda Shingen responded and began
16:38marching against the oda allied Tokugawa
16:41clan he easily seized the Tokugawa
16:43stronghold of futa Matta and began
16:45making preparations to mask the Tokugawa
16:48power base of Hama Matsu allowing his
16:50armies to continue on to fight the ODA
16:52yet daimyo Tokugawa Ieyasu were
16:55surprisingly ride out against the Takeda
16:57and meet Shingen at the Battle of me
17:00kataka Hara Ieyasu's forces would be
17:02utterly crushed in large part due to the
17:05devastating Takeda cavalry yet Yasu
17:08would survive the battle and allow his
17:10forces to make a successful retreat by
17:13fooling the Takeda in the spring of 1573
17:16Shingen renewed his assault against the
17:18Tokugawa and it is during the siege of
17:20Noda Castle where he would tragically
17:23meet his end leaving his son takeda
17:26katsuyori in charge of the mighty Takeda
17:30clan in the next episode
