0:08So, in this video tutorial, I'm going to
0:10show you how to use Google Scholar as
0:12well as how to navigate the UNC Pemroke
0:15Library site. First, let's look at
0:18Google [clears throat] Scholar.
0:20If I type in Google Scholar
0:25and I click on this link
0:29and I come over here to this menu bar, I
0:31want to go to advanced search.
0:35Google Scholar essentially provides
0:37peer-reviewed research. So, I can type
0:39in the words mushrooms
0:44and treat
0:48and then I might use just depression
0:52here. But you can also type in a phrase
0:55and then I can click on
0:58the search bar and these articles come
1:02up on
1:04you know using mushrooms to treat
1:06depression. So if I click if I was to
1:08click on this link, I would get the full
1:11HTML document.
1:14Sometimes you'll have PDF files like
1:16here, right? Right. So here it is.
1:19Here's the article and I've downloaded
1:22it. This is a scholarly peer-reviewed
1:24article. So that's how you would use
1:27Google Scholar. It's very simple. You
1:29can get to the library homepage simply
1:31by typing UNCCTP library.
1:35I will click on Mary Livermore Library
1:38and then that brings me to the UNCCTP
1:40library homepage.
1:43So one thing you can do is you can use
1:46Primo which is basically will search
1:49everything that the UNCCTP library has
1:51access to books articles online sources
1:56etc databases. So again I'm going to use
1:59my my key terms and my boolean
2:00operators. I might use something like
2:02the term mushroom.
2:07Use my boolean operator and I'm going to
2:10write treat. And when I put this
2:13asterisk by treat, basically that's
2:16telling the
2:18search engine that I want any ending
2:21with the word treat in it. So treated,
2:24treatment, etc. And then I'm going to
2:26type in and depression.
2:31And then I'm going to click on search.
2:32You'll see that I'm finding an article
2:35here that says um can mushrooms treat
2:38depression? It seems so. You'll notice
2:40that this is the Indianapolis uh
2:42journal. It's not peer-reviewed. If it
2:44was peer-reviewed, it would say so. And
2:46we can read that online, right? So, if I
2:48click on
2:51read online, it pulls up this article.
2:54It tells you here that this is a trade
2:55journal. Trade journals are not
2:57typically peer-reviewed,
3:00but it still is an appropriate
3:02acceptable resource for you to use. So,
3:04here we have the article.
3:07You just don't want all trade journals.
3:10There's also a book here that's uh
3:13available online for you. So, if we were
3:15to click on this book,
3:18we were to click on this e central, it
3:21takes us to the book and then we can
3:23look at the table of contents here.
3:26title page, notes on contributors, modes
3:29of brain disorders and so forth.
3:33And I could click on, you know, whatever
3:37I wanted here, okay? Whatever chapter I
3:39wanted to read. I could also download
3:41the article if I wanted
3:44and I could read it online. You can also
3:46print out certain certain number of
3:48pages.
3:51Here's another book. You can also see
3:52that it's there's no online access, but
3:55again, you could look at it. It'll show
3:58you the chapters of the book so that you
4:00can kind of see what the chapters are.
4:05But what I also really love about
4:07UNCCTP's library is that if you scroll
4:09down on a book like this to the very
4:11bottom, you can see other books that are
4:14right beside this one on the shelf.
4:18Okay, so this would be one way. Another
4:22[clears throat] way that you could
4:25find information here would be to go to
4:27this research tab and to click on
4:30research guides.
4:34What UNCCTP has done is they have taken
4:37certain databases and group them under
4:40certain disciplines. So if I'm
4:43interested in psychology for instance
4:45and I'm looking at mushrooms and
4:47treatment of depression, I might click
4:48on psychology and counseling
4:51and then I might go over here to
4:52databases
4:55and already some of the databases come
4:57up like APA site collection. So I might
5:00click on that
5:03and then I would again type in my key
5:05terms like mushrooms
5:08and then I would type in treat
5:12and then I would type in depression
5:17and then I would click on search and so
5:19what comes up are again a list of
5:22resources that we could use here. Again
5:24you can see that this one is peer-
5:26reviewviewed. So if we were to click on
5:28this one for instance,
5:31we can see that we can get the full
5:33texts here at UNCCTP. We need to click
5:36on ProQuest Central.
5:38And then here we have this article. So
5:41what you'd want to do is you'd want to
5:42sort of preview the article to see if
5:44actually it is useful for you. These
5:47would be just a few of the ways in which
5:49you could find articles that would be
5:51useful for your research. Again, do
5:54remember to download an article. Do not
5:56click on the link and save it because it
5:59will not take you back to this page. It
6:02will take you back to the ProQuest
6:04homepage which is not what you want. If
6:07you have questions, please do feel free
6:09to contact me. I'm always happy to help
6:11you.
