0:00in this video i'm gonna talk about tone

0:02mapping or color management as we have

0:05it called in blender

0:07i've briefly touched upon this topic in

0:09the previous uh chapter where we talked

0:12about rendering but now let's get into

0:14it so because you can see i'm in the

0:15compositing tab here let's click use

0:18notes

0:19remove the render layers and let's

0:21import our

0:2332-bit

0:25image we have created in the previous

0:27video

0:28so i'm choosing it here

0:31connecting with the composite output

0:34node and also

0:36creating the viewer node so we can

0:38preview the image in the back i'm going

0:40to press v

0:42to zoom it out a little bit and alt

0:44middle mouse button to pan it

0:47yeah and make it center

0:49so what do we use tone mapping or color

0:53management for well basically this

0:57settings here enable us to do the very

0:59basic post production on the image so

1:02let's start with the looks we have

1:05multiple options to choose from as you

1:08can see when i change the contrast

1:11settings here

1:13the image look also changes

1:16we are able to influence the gamma

1:18settings where in general we can use

1:21gamma for

1:23decreasing or increasing contrast within

1:26the picture as well

1:27and exposure

1:30is responsible for the amount of light

1:33we have in the image so

1:35it basically multiplies

1:38the

1:39pixel values

1:41within our

1:43static to the image cool thing as i

1:46mentioned in the previous video with

1:4732-bit images is where we

1:50go down with the exposure we still get

1:53those

1:55light information here if we go up

1:59again the shadow information

2:02here is very detailed

2:04and that's basically it i would say as

2:07for the

2:09color management

2:11what's important here is understanding

2:13the filmic and different

2:17inputs

2:18from within this section to avoid

2:20technical talk you just have to

2:22understand blender is an animation

2:25software at its core so a lot of inputs

2:29you'll find in it uh will be film

2:32related but for us people doing the

2:34architectural visualization

2:36how we can just

2:38at least here stick to the defaults or

2:41to the filmic the filmic is an

2:43color management input that kind of

2:47tries to make

2:49the tones uniform so it prevents us for

2:52having the over burned values here

2:55as well as having

2:57the flat dark

2:59values within the shadows within the

3:02dark colors in our image

3:05filmic also tends to give a little bit

3:07more natural image look even if we

3:11change the contrast to very high it

3:13still preserves the values within

3:17the highly contrasted tone areas whereas

3:20if we choose the default look

3:24as you can see it creates those over

3:27burned areas and we would have to adjust

3:29the gamma

3:31and exposure settings to get rid of them

3:36as you can see it slows down blenders

3:38quite a bit but

3:40yeah

3:42in general also if you use the default

3:44values if we set up gamma to 2.2

3:49this more or less gives us the tone

3:52balance as with the filmic

3:55setup

3:56the difference is still we have to pay

3:58much more attention into those

4:00highlights and shadows

4:02in order to avoid the overburned areas

4:06like

4:07let's say this one

4:09we have here right now

4:11so

4:12if i switch back to filmic this won't be

4:16happening as you can see

4:20uh color management and tone mapping is

4:22not only about setting up the different

4:25looks here and having a ready to go

4:29result by default from blender it

4:31actually allows us matching the

4:34rendering output to the referenced image

4:37and i would like to show you how we can

4:39do this in the next video to start the

4:43tone matching of our rendered image to

4:46the reference we have to modify our

4:49viewport a little bit so i'm dividing

4:52this bottom area into two independent

4:55ones and choosing image editors in each

4:58one of them here i'm gonna choose the

5:00viewer node

5:02which is this viewer from the

5:04compositing editor

5:06and here i'm gonna open our

5:09main reference

5:10so this is the setup

5:13we are going to be using for tone

5:15mapping for

5:16color

5:18matching those two pictures

5:20within each of the image editors i'm

5:22going to press the n key and now i'm

5:24going to choose these scopes

5:26so this gives us

5:28a little bit more technical input on the

5:31images and the histogram

5:33gives us an information about the color

5:36distribution in each one of them let's

5:39switch to luma

5:41and right now we know

5:44what are the tone representations

5:47or the tone spread within the images so

5:51the left part of the histogram are 100

5:54blacks

5:56the right part of the histogram are 100

5:59whites and the middle ground is the 50

6:02percent gray

6:04so you can see in the original reference

6:06we have

6:07much more tones in this right section of

6:10the histogram so between 50 gray and 100

6:13white whereas in our rendering

6:16everything is a little bit uh in the

6:19middle so here on the left we have more

6:22or less the same amount of tones as on

6:24the right

6:26now the tone mapping or color matching

6:29of those two images would be basically

6:31making this histogram look more like

6:35that one we won't be able to get them

6:37identical obviously because our

6:39rendering is a little bit different to

6:41the source image but still i think we

6:44are able to

6:45reproduce the general shape of this

6:48histogram or at least

6:50move the values from the middle

6:53to the right as we have here

6:56having most of the tones centered around

6:58this area means we'll have a lot of gray

7:01values around our image

7:03so if we increase the contrast that

7:05should spread the histogram evenly into

7:09both

7:11ends

7:12but i personally

7:14don't like using those high contrast

7:16settings as you can see they make the

7:18image a little bit too

7:20overburned

7:21so let's stick to the medium high

7:23contrast maybe

7:25and as i mentioned in one of the

7:27previous videos we can also control the

7:29contrast using the gamma settings so

7:31let's divide it by half and see what's

7:33happening

7:34you can see the histogram moved totally

7:37to the left so it's still not what we

7:39are aiming at

7:41let's use the values of 1.5 to see

7:45if there is any difference now we have

7:47the histogram on the right

7:50but the values are

7:52too bright

7:54as for my taste so let's go back to the

7:56defaults and let's see what happens if

7:59we play around with the exposure if we

8:02go to -1

8:04again the histogram moves to the left

8:07meaning if we go

8:08up with the values it will move to the

8:11right so let's perhaps

8:14start with the

8:16exposure settings

8:18uh we've moved some of the values to the

8:21right and let's now decrease the gamma

8:24and try to spread the histogram

8:27in this area i think

8:30i think this

8:33might do the trick just a little bit

8:36yeah you can see if we

8:38increase the gamma very very slightly

8:41uh we are getting quite a similar shape

8:44even

8:46uh those areas here perhaps this is

8:48a little bit too high as for now but

8:51let's see

8:52let's look at the image itself

8:55i think it also looks pretty good

8:58obviously we have

9:00too much light in those areas

9:02so let's try to reduce it let's maybe go

9:05with 1.25

9:07gamma here uh sorry exposure

9:11and yeah that

9:13actually gives us a pretty good

9:15starting point

9:17um

9:18as for the tone mapping i would say

9:20that's basically it and that's that's

9:23all you can do just within those very

9:26basic settings

9:27however we can influence the histogram

9:30look a little bit more in detail and

9:33that's where the curves come into play

9:36you can see they are hidden under this

9:38little icon here let's hit the use

9:41curves button

9:42and you can see we have a grid pattern

9:45within this window and within the

9:47histograms

9:48so the point i'm gonna add here will be

9:51represented here in the histograms you

9:54can actually see

9:56uh the very middle point of this

9:58histogram has those white values already

10:01marked whereas here we have those

10:04volumes

10:05much lower so let's see what happens if

10:08we move this point

10:10towards

10:12down

10:14yeah so that influence our histogram

10:17unfortunately not in the way we want it

10:21so here if you play around with the

10:23curves that's a little bit more

10:25spontaneous than the settings we were

10:27setting up here

10:29you sometimes need to add few more

10:31points like those two i usually

10:33keep

10:35yeah thanks blender

10:36i usually just keep those three points

10:40within my curve editor and try

10:43manipulate them only

10:45and make this

10:47graph look a little bit more like that

10:49one you can also use these two icons to

10:51zoom in zoom out

10:53to make a more

10:54uh

10:56to have a better precision while editing

10:58the curves because as you can see those

11:00very slight changes we do they can

11:03influence the histogram quite

11:05drastically let's say if i move this

11:08point here

11:10you can see

11:11the histogram spread

11:13again if i move it upwards just within

11:16those very tiny values

11:19yeah it

11:20now gets a little bit more like that so

11:23i think this is more or less

11:25the look we are trying to get

11:28again you still have to

11:30observe the main image every single time

11:33because

11:34what we are actually planning to have is

11:37a nice image not a nice looking

11:38histogram the the histogram is here just

11:41to help us

11:42matching the tones but still the image

11:45is our main target the good looking

11:48image

11:49so i'm gonna play a little bit with the

11:51curves here and get back to you once

11:54they are done

11:56and i'm back again after finishing my

11:59curve editing let me just increase this

12:01area slightly so we have a better

12:04preview

12:05as you can see our histogram now looks

12:08quite similar to what we have in the

12:10original image and as you can see i also

12:12added two

12:14extra points

12:16around the ends of the curve let me show

12:19you what happens if i edit this point so

12:22if i move it around

12:23it changes the look of the image quite

12:26drastically so you have to be careful

12:28about it

12:30but it basically adjusts the darker

12:34tones of our pictures so you can see

12:37this part of the histogram stays

12:40mostly untouched if i just move this

12:42point around

12:44and the other point on the other edge or

12:49sorry on the other end of the curve

12:50we'll be doing exactly the same

12:53the difference is it only

12:56impacts the highlights so if i move it a

13:00little bit down

13:02you can see

13:04only this part of the histogram changes

13:07so in the end as i mentioned we still

13:10have to look at the main picture

13:12and see if we like it or not

13:16as for our example i think we have a

13:18little bit

13:19too dark shadowy areas so let's move

13:21this point up

13:25and yeah

13:27this is

13:28more or less what we call tone mapping

13:31color

13:32matching uh for the images

13:35let me hide the

13:37histograms here and let's now zoom into

13:40both of the

13:41inputs

13:43i think we are getting pretty

13:45similar results still there is a

13:48difference in color as you can see this

13:50one is a little bit more

13:52more greeny or bluish depending on your

13:55the monitor you have but as the tones

13:59if you can see this shadowy area and

14:00this one in comparison

14:02to those areas i think we are getting

14:05pretty

14:06similar matches

14:08same here

14:10here we obviously have a little bit more

14:12shadow than in our

14:13example so that's why it's darker but

14:16let's say

14:17this area and this area they look quite

14:19similar to my taste

14:22um as well as here perhaps we could get

14:25a little bit more shadow

14:27but yeah that's not always possible

14:29unfortunately

14:32in any case i think

14:34those two

14:35images look now quite similar before we

14:39applied

14:40the tone mapping

14:42and you can also see that if we compare

14:45the images directly so this is the

14:47original input without any changes and

14:51this is our result after

14:53applying the tone mapping so i think

14:57this input is way better

15:00to be honest with you when i do the

15:02photoshop post production i'm i still

15:04prefer to use

15:06the normal

15:08default filmic look from here sometimes

15:11i just change the

15:13contrast

15:15so this will be my input for photoshop

15:17editing but as for the blender post

15:19production this is the image we will now

15:23start to

15:24color correct adjust the shades

15:27and see

15:28how far we can go with it
