0:00i will start post processing by dropping

0:03the shadow

0:04and ambient occlusion passes to

0:08photoshop

0:09so i will select both of them right

0:12click go to rasterize layers

0:15and i will now enable the shadow pass

0:18only

0:19so as you can see this is definitely not

0:22the result we are looking for and if we

0:24just play around with the opacity the

0:26effect isn't there

0:28so i suggest changing the mix method to

0:32soft light or overlay but usually soft

0:35light works better for me

0:37and once we do that you can instantly

0:40see much better result

0:42so let's hide and unhide the layer to

0:44see what's actually happening

0:46so you can definitely see the shadows

0:49get more visible in some areas let's say

0:53here around the counter as well

0:56i just think we are getting too much

0:59of this

1:00white uh highlight

1:03in our scene so we can either

1:06play around with the opacity slider

1:09let's say reducing it to 40 percent

1:12or you can also edit the layer using

1:16some of the tools like curves for

1:18example so let's

1:20do this with ambient occlusion if i

1:22enable it

1:23and send the mix type to soft light you

1:26can see

1:28the effect is still a little bit too

1:30dark

1:31so with my ambient occlusion layer

1:34selected i'm going to press ctrl m

1:36and open the curve editor now by playing

1:40around

1:42you can see i'm able to

1:44actually brighten up the scene and the

1:47result we have at this point is actually

1:50pretty interesting quite similar to what

1:53we were able

1:55to achieve

1:56with curves levels and exposure

2:00layers

2:01in the

2:02other video where i explained the

2:04photoshop post production and here we

2:06are able to have quite similar results

2:08using just the renderer layers so if we

2:10disable the ambient occlusion paths you

2:13can see it has

2:15a much stronger impact to our scene than

2:18just the shadow pass

2:20so i think we should definitely decrease

2:22the opacity of this ambient occlusion

2:24pass

2:25let's say to 50

2:27maybe

2:29and let's play around with it

2:32yeah i think 50 maybe 60 percent

2:35is enough for that

2:38let's now drag and drop glossy direct

2:41pass

2:43and as you can see again this pass is

2:46much darker than those two we've been

2:48using so if we set it up

2:52to soft light well this is something

2:56we don't want to have

2:58for this kind of passes with a lot of

3:00black

3:02areas let's use the screen mix method so

3:05what it does it actually cuts out all of

3:07the

3:08black values from the pass and it only

3:11leaves the highlights for us

3:13so now if we hide and unhide it you can

3:16see especially within those

3:18and those areas we are getting those

3:20very nice highlights

3:22of course they are too strong so

3:25let's reduce this effect

3:28to

3:30actually i think 20 25

3:33would be enough for that

3:36we can also uh play around with curves

3:40so let's see if it changes anything

3:44not that much if we only have 20

3:47few 25 percent of opacity so let's

3:50increase it and let's launch the curves

3:52again

3:56maybe if we increase the contrast

4:00will get something better well actually

4:03let's just keep it with

4:04this

4:05s curve increasing the contrast within

4:08this

4:09pass

4:11let's also reduce the opacity slightly

4:15and let's now add the final glossy

4:17indirect pass

4:19let's drag and drop the pass to

4:22photoshop

4:24and similar as with the glossy

4:27direct

4:29let's change the mix

4:31method to screen

4:33so this pass

4:35for

4:36in contrast to the other passes is a

4:38little bit too bright so let's decrease

4:41its brightness using the curves again

4:44we can actually go pretty harsh with the

4:46curves

4:48so you can see the reflections are

4:50becoming now much more natural

4:53yeah and if we enable disable the best

4:55we can clearly see this extra effect so

4:58also let's reduce the opacity to

5:02maybe 40 percent

5:04now i can select all of the passes with

5:06my shift

5:07select it press ctrl g to group them

5:11and let's hide and unhide everything

5:14so you can definitely see

5:17the immediate effect all of the passes

5:20have on our rendering

5:22right now i would suggest fine-tuning

5:24the results slightly so for example here

5:27i think the shadows are too dark

5:31we could fix that either by

5:34um enabling or disabling one of the

5:37passes

5:38changing their opacity i think the

5:41the shadow actually has the biggest

5:43impact on those dark points

5:45or we could also add a mask

5:48and using a very soft

5:50brush tool we could

5:53actually paint out

5:55those areas so i'm going to press f to

5:57go full screen

5:59change the opacity to 10 percent

6:02and just slightly

6:04click around this area to paint out

6:08those

6:09harsh shadows

6:12so i must say i'm pretty happy with the

6:15result i wasn't using passes in my

6:17original

6:19approach to this rendering but

6:21i must honestly say i'm really happy

6:24with how it looks like as you can see

6:26i'm just adding the curves right now to

6:28play around with the contrast a little

6:30bit more

6:31let's maybe go

6:33full screen with a black background so

6:36we have better preview on what's

6:38happening

6:39so just by adding those simple curves

6:44and maybe a color balance layer

6:47we would

6:49more or less have a finalized picture at

6:51this point so

6:53yeah

6:54if

6:56should you use the render passes that's

6:58the main question right now well i would

7:00say that definitely depends

7:02on the way you want to approach

7:04renderings you might also ask why

7:07aren't we using the renderer passes

7:09directly in blender

7:11my answer to that is it's a really

7:16much less user friendly as it is in

7:19photoshop so

7:20personally what i would suggest

7:22uh if you want to stick to blender i

7:25would just do the toner mapping and

7:27color adjustments there but if you want

7:29to

7:30work with the render passes i strongly

7:33advise

7:35dropping them to

7:36to photoshop

7:38but yeah now when i'm enabling and

7:41disabling them i must really say i'm

7:43really happy with the results so

7:45i really hope this video was informative
