0:00this is lesson 11 of Maharaj and suffet
0:04series
0:05in this lesson we'll tackle three
0:07letters that all have the same
0:09articulation point or Maharaj they are
0:16te
0:17and Del
0:21so let's start with ta and observe the
0:25shape and positioning of the tongue
0:28here we can see how we pronounce thought
0:32the tip of the tongue is touching and
0:35pressing against the alveolar Ridge so
0:39it is behind the Upper Front Teeth with
0:42no room for air to pass
0:45second the back of the tongue is raised
0:48which is a major component for producing
0:51the thought sound properly since it is a
0:54heavy or a full mouth letter
0:58Alto
1:00Alto
1:02Alto
1:05Alto live
1:12foreign
1:15so the tip of the tongue is pressing
1:18against the alveolar Ridge with a raised
1:21back of the tongue and that is the most
1:23important component for tall
1:26now moving on to te
1:30is produced from the exact same position
1:33so the tip of the tongue is also
1:36pressing against the alveolar Ridge
1:38behind the Upper Front Teeth
1:41but the difference is the back of the
1:44tongue which is lowered as you can see
1:47indicating that this is an empty mouth
1:50letter
1:51at
2:02Raw
2:04and as you can hear there is a very
2:07faint sound that follows the te
2:10we call that hems and it is essentially
2:14a little gush of air that is released
2:17after pronouncing the te especially when
2:21te has
2:22and you perform it by releasing the
2:26tongue from its pressing position so as
2:29a result of the pressure of the tongue
2:31the air trapped behind it is released
2:34causing the hems that Raw
2:38death Raw
2:41fit now
2:43fit na
2:45we shouldn't also be over exaggerating
2:48the hems as it might cause the sound
2:53to follow the te which is something you
2:55should avoid
2:57that oh
3:00that's Raw so this is over exaggeration
3:04and you can avoid this by making sure
3:07that the tip of the tongue is not too
3:10close to the back of the teeth since
3:13this is going to create the sound of
3:15scene
3:16so perform hems but make sure that it is
3:20not over exaggerated and here side by
3:24side we can observe the difference
3:25between paw and te
3:32fit Torah
3:37fit Torah
3:38and here we can say that and te are
3:42essentially the same letter but one is
3:45empty mouth which is then the te but the
3:48other one is full mouth which is
3:51so they are more or less the same letter
3:54but one is the empty mouth version and
3:56the other one is the full mouth version
3:59so if you're struggling to get Delta
4:01right make the te as your starting point
4:04and try to make it as a full mouth
4:07letter and this is going to be your
4:09thought
4:11finally is the dell and Del is the exact
4:16same technique as te it is 100 identical
4:20same position and even the same tongue
4:23shape but how is it possible that these
4:26two letters produce two different sounds
4:29then
4:30well there is one major difference and
4:34it is the function of the vocal cords so
4:38let's understand that even better
4:40when pronouncing any letter the vocal
4:43cords are either vibrating or they are
4:47not vibrating
4:49if they are vibrating then the sound
4:51will be called voiced
4:54and if they're not vibrating then the
4:56sound is called voiceless but what is it
4:59like when the vocal cords are actually
5:02vibrating
5:04the easiest way to feel the difference
5:06is by comparing s sound and z sound like
5:12that
5:14which is then voiceless is just a flow
5:17of air while Z is voiced it is also
5:23something that you can feel by touching
5:25your throat to notice its vibration when
5:28pronouncing a voiced sound which is
5:31something you can try now Z
5:34you should feel some vibration around
5:36the area of the throat while there is no
5:39vibration whatsoever when you're
5:41pronouncing a voiceless sound
5:46so this is the difference between voiced
5:49and voiceless and that is exactly the
5:52difference between the sounds of Del and
5:56te
5:58is voiceless while Del is voiced
6:04Ed
6:10Dana
6:13and do
6:15foreign
6:19so this is the technique for the three
6:21similar letters
6:25and the fact that they are quite similar
6:29is the reason why there are some common
6:32mistakes related to them
6:35the first Common mistake is pronouncing
6:37te as
6:42te so basically mixing them up together
6:46this happens when the back of the tongue
6:49is not controlled properly so in the
6:52case of thought if the back of the
6:54tongue is not raised enough your thought
6:57will not sound full enough like that
7:02photo
7:04photo
7:06while it should sound like this
7:14so the back of the tongue has to be
7:16raised enough to produce the full heavy
7:19sound of the thought practicing these
7:22two sounds using minimal pairs can help
7:24you train your muscles and also your
7:27ears to the right sound
7:29minimal pairs are identical words except
7:33for one sound difference which is the
7:35thing that you are practicing like the
7:38word
7:39teen and clean
7:44teen
7:46practicing such words will help you get
7:49the tongue movement right and switch
7:51between one to the other
7:53the second mistake happens when ta is
7:57preceding thought in the same word this
8:01mistake causes the tat to sound like
8:04thought because they are too close to
8:06each other like in this word and the
8:09mistake sounds like this
8:11foreign
8:16now here it is important to distinguish
8:18between the te and Paul
8:24not
8:30mistake number three is pronouncing Del
8:34as te
8:36as we said these two letters are
8:38identical except for the voiced trait
8:41if you didn't vibrate the vocal cords
8:44enough when pronouncing Del you are
8:47essentially pronouncing te and this is
8:51one of the common mistakes in Surat
8:53al-fore
8:56now here I didn't vibrate the Dell
9:00enough so it should be
9:07common mistake number four is when Dell
9:11is used after a heavy letter and the
9:14mistake is that some Learners pronounce
9:16Dell as a full mouth or a heavy Dell
9:19which is of course not correct because
9:21Dell is an empty mouth or a light letter
9:25the mistake sounds like this
9:28him
9:33while it should sound like this
9:39him
9:42so the second most important thing to
9:44learn today after learning the technique
9:47of each of these letters is practicing
9:49them together to be able to hear and
9:52produce the minute differences between
9:54these sounds
