0:00so as we're wrapping up with the

0:01respiratory system let's look at a few

0:03of the common diseases and disorders

0:05that could affect a patient suffering

0:07for with respiratory illnesses and so

0:10the first one of course would be asthma

0:12most popular uh asthma is an

0:15inflammation in the Airways it causes

0:17restriction within the alveoli and so as

0:20the patient is inhaling and exhaling the

0:23alveoli is restricted remember alveoli

0:26expands and contracts with each breath

0:28that the patient takes and so with the

0:31inflammation in the bronchials the

0:33inflammation within the alveoli very

0:35difficult for them to have that air

0:37exchange and so what we see with

0:40asthmatic patients is going to be that

0:42tightening within the chest also

0:44something that's called a barrel chest

0:46they're not breathing from their

0:48stomachs per se but it looks like the

0:50force air is coming from their stomach

0:52and that has to do with the Restriction

0:54that's in the chest the body is trying

0:57to accommodate by any means necessary

0:59and that means get air in fast

1:02medication is prescribed for asthma most

1:05of these patients are on maintenance

1:06plans so they know to start their day

1:09with an inhaler and a certain amount of

1:11Puffs medication is on hand for an

1:14emergency situations uh but asthma is

1:16very common

1:19going down to the very bottom we have

1:21bronchitis

1:23another common uh disorder associated

1:25with the respiratory system starts with

1:28inflammation within the bronchi

1:31and that inflammation tends to lead to

1:34an infection

1:35so with bronchitis what we typically see

1:38is mucus the patient has the ability to

1:42expel it throughout cough it's going to

1:44be either yellow or green if it's green

1:47we know that's typically a sign of an

1:49infection

1:50and that infection will be accompanied

1:53with fever and often coughing because of

1:56the Restriction within the bronchials

1:58they don't have the ability to allow for

2:01that proper airflow Exchange

2:03chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

2:05otherwise known as COPD anytime you hear

2:09the term COPD it's really in reference

2:12to a group of lung disorders so there

2:16are a few things that are classified

2:17underneath COPD

2:19uh usually caused by smoking or outside

2:22pollutants

2:24and causes the alveoli the grape-like

2:27structure on the end of the bronchials

2:29to become enlarged if they become overly

2:33enlarged what happens is another thing

2:35uh that can affect it is it's going to

2:38cause that restriction within the

2:39alveoli so again the air exchange is

2:42going to be tampered with because it

2:44doesn't have the ability to expand and

2:47contract and allow for that proper air

2:49flow

2:51emphasis

2:52similar to COPD uh whereas it is also

2:57caused from smoking

3:00and emphysema falls under the category

3:03of COPD

3:05so definitely going to have some of the

3:08similar Chief complaints

3:11last one there at the bottom is called

3:13Legionnaires disease this is a bacteria

3:16that affects the upper respiratory

3:18system usually caused from contaminated

3:22water that flows through the ventilation

3:24of our air conditioning systems so

3:27bacteria there what you may see with

3:29Legionnaires disease is very similar to

3:31what you would see for bronchitis so

3:33inflammation cough maybe mucus discharge

3:36but very very similar to bronchitis
