0:14it involves racing through all 16 tracks
0:17as fast as possible while allowing you
0:20to perform any of the game's numerous
0:22shortcuts Abney has been dominating this
0:25category for years he got the world
0:28record in February 2015 and now five and
0:32a half years later he's still never
0:34given it up
0:36but it's not just that Abney holds the
0:38record
0:39here this is the leaderboard we see
0:43sometimes in the 28th and high 27s and
0:46unsurprisingly ahead of them all is
0:48Matthias rustameyer with a remarkable
0:512706
0:54and then there's Abney making a joke of
0:58the competition
0:59this was how the category had been for
1:01the better part of a decade and a big
1:04reason why is because during that time
1:06hardly anything new had been found
1:10Mario Kart 64 had established shortcuts
1:13many of which had been discovered
1:15literal decades ago
1:18there had been a few minor improvements
1:20but by 2020 there had been nothing
1:22substantial for years sure every now and
1:26then a random internet user would claim
1:29to have found something but there was
1:31always some issue it didn't actually
1:34save time or had been found already or
1:37is flat out fake
1:39so with no improvements Abney was able
1:43to dominate nobody could catch up to him
1:46without new strategies
1:49and this brings us to August 2nd 2020.
1:53Abney was doing attempts to improve his
1:55own world record when suddenly he gets a
1:59message from somebody new claiming to
2:01have made a large discovery
2:04can you send me a video about large

2:11uh posted on Discord I don't know
2:14this had happened before just another
2:17random viewer trying to get the
2:19streamer's attention I'm gonna see what
2:21this guy's large Discovery is but still
2:25he had to take a look just so he could
2:27rule it out and get back to his attempts

2:43this is actually
2:46holy cow
2:49this is
2:52an actual new shortcut
2:59what
3:01Abney didn't know it yet but this
3:03discovery was the first of several
3:06and his world record
3:08it was about to become very vulnerable
3:11this is his quest to hang on to it
3:15[Music]
3:28but first I want to tell you about this

4:54abney's mind was blown his chat was
4:57losing their minds and it all stemmed
5:00from forest 64. a viewer who had never
5:04posted in chat before today
5:07this is what was on the video that
5:09Forrest sent to Abney
5:11Royal Raceway the 11th track in the Run
5:16Forrest immediately turned around at the
5:18start and drove over some grass then
5:21grabbed an item triple red shells he
5:24then drove back across the finish line
5:26and carefully positioned himself
5:29he fired a red shell precisely drove
5:31into it and was launched on top of the
5:34wall
5:34lakitsu set him down behind the finish
5:37line
5:38and the game counted it as a lap
5:40Forrest repeated this twice skipped two
5:43more laps and just like that one of the
5:47game's longest courses was finished in
5:49just one minute Royal Raceway did have
5:53shortcuts before this but they were
5:55relatively minor you'd typically finish
5:57in about a minute 40. so as soon as
6:00Abney saw this video he knew the Run was
6:03changing forever
6:05perhaps even more Curious than the
6:08shortcut itself was the guy who
6:09discovered it he was simply known as
6:12Forest 64. yeah some random dude in the
6:15chat this round in the past when
6:18shortcuts were found it was usually by
6:20an established expert either a
6:23tool-assisted speedrunner or a player
6:25with thousands of hours in the game
6:27but Forest nobody in the community had
6:30heard of him before
6:31well Forrest first played the game in
6:342017 but didn't submit his run since he
6:37played on Wii U Virtual Console which
6:40was banned he began tassing the game for
6:43fun and became an expert on how the
6:45game's shortcuts worked he was perfectly
6:48happy staying in the background and not
6:50interacting with the community
6:52but then he found the Royal Raceway
6:54shortcut and felt compelled to tell
6:57people about it so he did
7:00the inner workings of this shortcut are
7:01quite complicated but here's a rundown
7:04of it by driving over certain regions
7:07away from the main track like this part
7:09of the grass the game sees that you've
7:12skipped over a decent portion of the
7:14track and it responds by storing your
7:16current position in memory
7:18if you then land on specific polygons
7:21like the top of the wall the game takes
7:24the position stored in its memory to
7:26determine where you are
7:28so lakitu sets you down near the grass
7:31where your position was stored the game
7:33thinks you've driven a full lap and you
7:36can drive forward to complete it
7:38this was a miracle
7:40look random people claim things all the
7:42time on the internet especially when it
7:45comes to speedrunning
7:46but this random guy
7:48464 had actually found something
7:52it was incredible
7:54and Mario Kart 64 would probably never
7:57see something like this again
7:59if it didn't happen again the very next
8:02day
8:04on August 3rd 2020 someone else sents a
8:08private message
8:10it was another guy that nobody in the
8:12community had heard of before
8:14and once again he was claiming that he'd
8:17found a new shortcut
8:19and guess what
8:20he was absolutely right
8:24Rainbow Road
8:25just like the last shortcut you turn
8:28around at the start and go grab red
8:30shells you then drive forward and stop
8:33next to the finish line by firing a red
8:35shell behind you then driving into it
8:38you tumble over the edge in front of the
8:40Finish Line after you fall for a while
8:43and stop tumbling the game actually lets
8:46you back up in midair and you can cross
8:48back behind the finish line
8:51so when lakitu brings you back you're
8:54behind the finish line and the game
8:56gives you credit for having driven a
8:58full lap
9:00the guy who discovered this one is named
9:02Garrett gracel he apparently found it
9:05one day back in the 90s when he knocked
9:08his friend over the edge with a red
9:09shell and the game gave him credit for a
9:11lap
9:12he assumed the community knew about it
9:14and never brought it up
9:16but when he saw a speed run where
9:18players did a slower skip with a green
9:20shell he decided he should mention it to
9:22someone
9:23and he was right his Red Shell skip was
9:26faster by a solid 30 seconds it had been
9:30decades since an outsider had found the
9:32new shortcut
9:34now my sheer coincidence it had happened
9:37twice in two days by two separate people
9:41but while Garrett's shortcut was a
9:44one-off thing forest was still looking
9:46for more and over the next few days he
9:49come up with yet another one this time
9:52on Toad's Turnpike
9:54the setup is a little too complicated to
9:56explain here but it involves a lot of
9:58getting stuck in the railing and driving
10:01over the grass next to the track
10:03the end result is being able to hop into
10:05the railing next to the finish line and
10:08skipping a lap each time
10:1045 seconds on Royal Raceway
10:1330 seconds on Rainbow Road and now 55
10:16seconds on Toad's Turnpike in the span
10:19of a week more than two minutes of time
10:22save were added to the Run
10:24Abney was still way ahead of the pack
10:26but if he didn't take advantage of this
10:28there was potential for these guys to
10:31catch him
10:32so Abney got to work
10:35despite the massive potential for time
10:38save this still wasn't going to be easy
10:40the Royal Raceway skip was extremely
10:43tough you had the time your Collision
10:46perfectly or you weren't making it on
10:48top of the wall
10:49still the world records started to pour
10:52in 25 29 then 25-25

11:04on September 7th Abney had his best
11:06chance yet a potential mid-24 minute run
11:10with three courses left
11:13standing in his way was Yoshi Valley
11:17if you get a speed item like a mushroom
11:19or Star you can jump over the fence and
11:22hit a seam on the wall this causes you
11:25to skip a lap upon being placed back
11:27down optimally you want to get Triple
11:30mushrooms you can do this three times
11:32once per lap but triple mushrooms is at
11:36best 25 percent likely
11:38so a decent backup is to drive around
11:41the rightmost path and hit this seam
11:43which both Skips a lap and moves you
11:46forward a bit upon respawning
11:48it's slower than getting triple shrooms
11:51but it still allows you to continue the
11:53run in most cases
11:55so Abney tried to get Triple shrooms but
11:58didn't get them no big deal he just had
12:01to hit the backup shortcut
12:03but then now dude I went out and losing
12:08bunch no dude runs over
12:11classic DK shouldn't have done it dude
12:13DK strikes again
12:15despite the three new shortcuts there
12:18were still so many other courses that
12:20could kill the Run they hadn't gone
12:23anywhere

12:29and besides that to capitalize on the
12:32time saves in Royal Raceway and Rainbow
12:34Road Abney had to get lucky with items
12:37he needed triple Reds which is only 20
12:40likely you can sit on an item box
12:43repeatedly to get items but it can waste
12:46a lot of time especially if you get a
12:48star or gold mushroom
12:50at the end of September Abney would get
12:53another good chance he had a solid run
12:56going but then on Royal Raceway he
12:59managed to get six red shells some
13:02insurance just in case he missed the
13:03jump
13:04but he ended up going three for three
13:06getting a half minute time save nice
13:10let's go dude oh my God I'm saving a ton
13:12of time
13:14here we go the next few courses were
13:17pretty standard although falling in the
13:19water on Banshee Boardwalk costs a few
13:21seconds
13:22and so he answered rainbow road with a
13:26sizable lead he needed to get red shells
13:29quickly and avoid big time wasters like
13:31a star or gold shroom
13:35nice well
13:38and pretty much have to get Red's next
13:40item or it's kind of dead
13:48it wasn't quick but he had the Reds no
13:51insurance this time
13:53now he needed three hits in a row
14:03oh my God
14:08crazy

14:16this was the biggest cut off the record
14:18since 2017 and despite having obvious
14:22slowdowns it felt good to make progress
14:25looking at the leaderboard there was
14:27still no real threat to abny climate tea
14:30had moved into second place but he was
14:33over a minute and 40 seconds behind
14:35so apne decided to take a break resting
14:39assured that his world record was safe
14:41[Music]
14:44or was it
14:46there was now a little bit of
14:48competition neither Runner was that
14:51close to the record but they were closer
14:53than anybody had been in years in third
14:56place was samek just over a minute away
15:00he'd had a pretty quick rise up the
15:02leaderboard in late 2020 and his 26-14
15:05featured all three new shortcuts his
15:09biggest downfall was the fact that he
15:11had less experience than Abney so his
15:13driving was less precise and he bled
15:15time across the Run
15:17and in second place was kazuya his rise
15:21was a little more slow and steady but It
15:23ultimately led to him being the second
15:25to get a sub-26 minute run
15:28he could also drive a little bit quicker
15:30than cement but it was still a
15:33disadvantage compared to abny kazuya and
15:36samek were mainly in a battle with each
15:38other for second place
15:40but they were close enough to make Abney
15:42return to the game knowing there were
15:44still plenty of time to save
15:47and on his first session back Abney got
15:50on this run

16:3824.58 this was the first minute barrier
16:41broken in nearly four years and it was
16:45all possible thanks to the three new
16:47shortcuts Rainbow Road and Royal Raceway
16:49were nearly perfect and Toad's Turnpike
16:52saved a bunch of time too
16:54this gave Abney some breathing room over
16:56his competitors but he knew there was
16:58still work to do
17:00take Mario Raceway for instance
17:03this is another course where you want to
17:04get Triple red shells so you can launch
17:07yourself over the wall on each lap
17:09but in this run it took Abney over half
17:12a minute until he could finally get them
17:15so Abney knew he had to keep going he
17:19had just cracked into the 24s now he was
17:24going to see how low he could take it
17:28about a week later Abney got on a run
17:31with a perfect Toad's Turnpike thrusting
17:34him into the lead he bled a bit from
17:36missing jumps on choco Mountain but then
17:39it was time for Mario Raceway Abney
17:41could save a big chunk of time here as
17:44long as he could get red shells and
17:46avoid items like stars
17:52no why
17:55Reds oh my God
18:03right here
18:10despite disastrous luck he still gained
18:13a tiny bit of time
18:15the Run continued to be up and down
18:17until he reached Yoshi Valley
18:22oh my God
18:24with triple shrooms Abney is able to
18:27enter Rainbow Road over half a minute
18:30ahead of the world record he just needed
18:33to get red shells
18:36I'm dude I'm just going
18:39blue shells are interesting you can do
18:42the shortcut just like you can with red
18:44shells but you can't get three of them
18:46at a time
18:51oh my God all right one blue right to
18:54this run so now he could only do the
18:57blue shell skip once then he had to go
18:59back and do the slower green shell skip
19:02twice
19:03this was gonna be close

19:25somehow he had pulled it off luck had
19:28tried to prevent it but Abney forced his
19:30way into a world record
19:33and as impressive as it was this run
19:36would be totally irrelevant by the next
19:38day

20:14that is a nice record
20:17this was the world record Abney had been
20:20looking for he nailed the new strategies
20:23and while there were some small time
20:25losses there were no glaring ones like
20:27we'd seen in past runs
20:29Abney was back to being more than a
20:31minute and a half ahead of second place
20:34there was no longer any threat to his
20:37world record
20:38but that didn't mean he wanted to stop
20:40playing he was on a roll all these
20:43improvements came in the span of just
20:45one week
20:46and while the world record was solid
20:48there were still time saves to be made
20:51so Abney pushed onward
20:54and a few days later he had a run that
20:57got off to the best pace of his life
21:00this runs crazy
21:05oh man this was mostly thanks to
21:09calamari desert
21:15this course features two major shortcuts
21:17the first is actually an intentional one
21:20from the Developers
21:22kind of
21:23if you drive most of the lap normally
21:25then go into the tunnel and activate a
21:28Star the game extends the Finish Line
21:30into the tunnel in Council app
21:33it was meant to be an Easter egg but
21:35speedrunners found a way to abuse it you
21:38can drive into the tunnel from the
21:40opposite side at the start of a lap then
21:43turn around and activate the star
21:45it counts as a lap completion in a
21:48fraction of the time
21:50the other shortcut also involves driving
21:52into the tunnel you take either red
21:55shells or a blue shell and knock
21:57yourself over the fence skipping most of
22:00the lap
22:01now both of these shortcuts save big
22:03time and ideally you want to do both
22:06that means getting red shells then
22:08grabbing a second item and having it be
22:10a star
22:11but getting triple Reds is 20 likely and
22:15a star is 30 so you've only got a six
22:18percent chance of getting the magic
22:20combination
22:21but when you do get it right away
22:24it saves big time
22:27so Abney kept playing this incredible
22:29run and after quick triple Reds on Mario
22:32Raceway he had a nearly 40 second lead
22:36but then he answered Royal Raceway once
22:39again needing triple red shells
22:44no
22:55dude I always miss that first it went

23:03run going

23:10in addition to needing a lot of luck the
23:12Royal Raceway skip is one of the hardest
23:14in the game
23:15be it from not getting red shells or
23:18messing up the shortcut most runs that
23:20make it to Royal Raceway die at Royal
23:22Raceway
23:24Abney continued to do runs over the
23:26following weeks but Royal Raceway was
23:29just being brutal run after run made it
23:32there on record Pace but they almost
23:34never made it through
23:36he was struggling to get runs deep more
23:39than he had in months
23:41meanwhile samek and kazuya saw an
23:44opportunity while Abney was stalled and
23:47not setting any records
23:49maybe this was their chance to improve

25:43the Gap had closed there was just 24
25:47seconds between Abney and kazuya with
25:50samek not far behind
25:52kazuya had turned into a remarkably
25:55consistent player and he was doing the
25:57impossible
25:59he might have a shot at getting this
26:01world record
26:03well Abney had no choice but to keep
26:05trying on March 18th he built up another
26:08lead into Royal Raceway not as big as
26:11some previous runs but still a
26:13comfortable Advantage step one
26:16acquire red shelves

26:21that was easy now he had to hit them
26:25three out of three no margin for error

26:40oh my God
26:50bout time
26:52it was officially on
26:54Abney took a 36 second lead into the
26:57special cup four courses separating him
27:00from a big world record

27:43the first run under 24 minutes and it
27:47had a lot going for it a strong opening
27:50followed by three out of three on both
27:52Royal Raceway and Rainbow Road
27:54once again Abney now had a big
27:57separation from second place despite a
28:00massive effort kazuya was back to being
28:03nearly a minute behind
28:05now it was samek's turn to make things
28:08interesting

28:11nice let's go in April 2021 samek made a
28:17major push to lower his personal best he
28:20did thousands of attempts in a span of
28:22just weeks and he quickly saw results
28:25it all came to a head on May 13 2021 he
28:30had a standard run going out of frap
28:32snow land but after three out of three
28:34Hill jumps on Chaco Mountain he took a
28:36big lead nice another Perfection
28:40wow so entering Royal Raceway samek had
28:45a great opportunity
28:46as long as he could hit this three out
28:48of three
28:53Cruise
28:57all right another chance
29:00with nearly everything going his way the
29:02only thing that could make this better
29:04would be getting triple shrooms on Yoshi
29:06Valley

29:09he went into Rainbow Road and although
29:11it took him a while to get red shells he
29:14was still in position for a big PB
29:21please

29:25just like that samek had swooped into
29:29second place he suffered from slower
29:31driving compared to abny and took a
29:34while to line up a few of the shortcuts
29:36but this was still a really clean second
29:39place run
29:40now they were still far away but Abney
29:43now had two competitors that were
29:45closing in it'd be helpful if he could
29:47gain a bit more separation
29:50well there was one thing he could do
29:53a few months ago forest and another
29:55Tasser named weatherton had been looking
29:57into ways to go through walls
30:00for a proper explanation on how wall

30:06most wall Clips are extremely precise
30:09and aren't viable for a full game Run
30:12but one day Forrest had an idea if you
30:15have enough speed you can clip into a
30:18wall and touch the surface behind it on
30:21Luigi Raceway this means you can start
30:24in front of the Finish Line then clip
30:26into the wall and touch the other side
30:27of the track which updates your section
30:30marker and finally be ejected from the
30:32wall and land behind the finish line
30:35this tricks the game into thinking
30:37you've driven a full lap without having
30:39really left the section right around the
30:41finish line
30:43you need the speed from a mushroom to do
30:45this so the best strategy was to grab an
30:47item pray it was Triple mushrooms and
30:49then precisely set up to Ram into the
30:52wall three times
30:54this is still extremely precise but it
30:57can save about 10 seconds over the old
30:59shortcut that could be just what Abney
31:02needed to keep lowering his time
31:04so while he knew it meant a ton of
31:07attempts would die right away Abney
31:09committed to going for it
31:11meanwhile kazuya got back to doing
31:14attempts as well difference was he opted
31:17to not go for anything new on Luigi
31:19Raceway it would lose him some time but
31:22it did mean he could get more runs going
31:25and with all the difficulties and
31:27Randomness that comes later in the Run
31:29playing is safe on Luigi Raceway wasn't
31:31such a bad idea
31:33still Abney had a big lead over kazuya
31:38was this finally the time he could put
31:40the record away for good and stop
31:42worrying about losing it

33:07there was no denying it kazuya was
33:11closing in abney's lead was Vanishing
33:14and there was legitimate danger of
33:16losing a record that he had held for
33:18more than six years
33:20kazuya's Improvement was remarkable his
33:23driving had gotten faster and his
33:25consistency with the shortcuts was
33:27approaching what Abney could do
33:29and if he didn't act quickly kazuya was
33:32on a direct course to beat his world
33:34record
33:36so Abney acted as quickly as he could
33:42now this run was looking nice he'd
33:46gotten the time save in Luigi Raceway
33:48and a clean Toad's Turnpike to save a
33:50bunch more
33:51he missed just one Hill jump on Chaco
33:53mountain and got Reds right away on
33:56Mario Raceway
33:57going into Royal Raceway this was the
34:00best Pace he'd ever been on in his life
34:03but it was all for nothing if he
34:05couldn't get reds
34:10[Music]
34:17it's a stupid dude
34:19Abney was too close to the wall so the
34:22Red Shell hit it with too much speed and
34:24died
34:25had he been just slightly further away
34:27he could have hit this three out of
34:29three
34:30instead his best run ever was thrown in
34:34the garbage
34:35this was a tough pill to swallow but
34:38he'd gotten there before that meant he
34:40could get there again and unbelievably
34:43the very next day Abney found himself in
34:47the same spot a 30-second lead into
34:50Royal Raceway good enough to once again
34:52be his best Pace ever
34:55this was a perfect chance for Redemption
34:58just hold it together

35:15God Abney had been playing this category
35:19for seven years those were the two
35:22fastest runs he'd ever had
35:24back to back days both killed in the
35:28exact same spot
35:30but like any good speedrunner Abney knew
35:33he had to push onward
35:34he'd had some really crazy Paces lately
35:38if he could just get back there and
35:40execute on Royal Raceway he'd have the
35:43world record in the bag
35:45but I don't think Abney was prepared for
35:47the type of run he'd have on September

37:08he'd drive over to a spot on the grass
37:11then use his star to do the shortcut

37:16it would only cost them a few seconds

37:34when I go and look at my RNG
37:37calculations that I do where it was like
37:40one in 900 chance of getting acceptable
37:42RNG
37:44I got the RNG in this round

38:09just one more course rainbow road but
38:13the Red Shell skip had not gone well for
38:16him lately
38:17good news was he had a 20 second buffer
38:20to work with
38:21if he could just get red shells and hit
38:24the trick there was room for a big world
38:27record but he needed to not miss

38:45he had done it again
38:47right when kazuya was starting to close
38:49in Abney added another 18 seconds of
38:52separation
38:53kazuya and samek had both made a good
38:56effort but at the end of the day this
38:58was abney's category he was just flat
39:01out better at it than everyone else
39:04the new strategies had made things
39:05interesting but not enough to ever lose
39:08the record
39:09kazuya had given it all he could but he
39:12was never able to close the gap
39:14he was a good player but simply couldn't
39:17keep up with Abney and with this world
39:20record the most optimized one the game
39:23had seen in years
39:25it was hopeless
39:27there was nothing to do but watch it sit
39:30at the top of the leaderboard
39:39whoa

39:45something amazing has happened to kazuya
39:48he's getting times that nobody saw
39:51coming his driving is better he's
39:54hitting the shortcuts consistently and
39:56it all culminated in a 23-40 from
39:59December 2021.
40:01it was an extremely similar run to what
40:04Abney got getting red shells quickly
40:06everywhere and not missing a single one

40:15kazuya was now 11 seconds from the world
40:18record he'd been playing this game
40:20non-stop for over a year and it was
40:23starting to look like it might pay off
40:25big time was he the real deal
40:28well he continued on a while longer
40:30without any improvements but in February
40:332022 he got on another run that saved
40:36time early thanks to getting a blue
40:38shell star combo on calamari desert
40:41he saved more time with the clean toads
40:43Turnpike and suddenly he had a 15 second
40:47lead over his run
40:48if he could preserve this the rest of
40:50the way this run was going to be the
40:54world record
40:55but still standing in his way was Royal
40:58Raceway
40:59[Music]

41:14like I said kazuya had gotten extremely
41:18consistent with these shortcuts
41:20five courses from a world record
41:29[Music]

41:50Center
41:55[Music]
42:00foreign
42:01[Music]
42:04there were now two seconds between Abney
42:07and kazuya had he not missed a jump on
42:10DK jungle Parkway or had he gotten
42:12triple shrooms on Yoshi Valley this run
42:15would have been the world record and
42:17someone other than Abney would be in the
42:19top spot for the first time in seven
42:22years
42:23naturally abny came back to do more runs
42:26trying to play defense and hang on to
42:29his record
42:30but he struggled to get anything going
42:33This Record had been synonymous with him
42:35for close to a decade now it was hard to
42:38believe that it might be coming to an
42:40end
42:41all kazooga needed was a run that kept
42:43it close into the special cup where he
42:46could save a bunch of time and beat the
42:48world record
42:50a few weeks later kazuya got on a run
42:53with a really clean choco Mountain it
42:56took a while to get red shells on Mario
42:57Raceway but he got through it he bled a
43:01little bit of time on Royal Raceway but
43:03only a few seconds
43:05this was the exact type of run he was
43:07looking for a deficit that he could
43:10overcome in the special cup
43:12so kazuya got to work
43:15[Music]
43:32there it was kazuya had a seven second
43:36lead into rainbow road if he could get
43:39red shells then hit the shortcut three
43:41times in a row
43:43he was about to take the world record
43:46one course to go
43:58no red shells simple bad luck cost
44:02kazuya the world record
44:04this was the best chance he'd ever had
44:06to get it and his time was running out
44:09Abney and kazuya were neck and neck each
44:13player was actively doing attempts to
44:15break the world record
44:17was kazuya going to be able to take the
44:19record or would abney's record streak
44:21remain Unbroken
44:23it all came down to who could lower
44:25their time first
44:27well in April 2022
44:30one of these players broke through
44:33[Music]

45:10thank you
45:15[Music]
45:18after more than 50 000 attempts kazuya
45:21was the 150cc skips world record holder
45:25congratulations poured in across the
45:28community
45:29it was just surreal to see a new name on
45:32top of the leaderboard
45:33kazuya had cut it close he didn't get
45:36Triple shrooms on Yoshi Valley and it
45:38took some time to get red shells on
45:40Rainbow Road
45:41but he had left just enough room and
45:44eked out a one-second world record
45:47as for Abney there was nothing to be
45:50ashamed of kazuya had turned into a
45:53tremendous player and Abney had
45:55certainly left his mark on the community
45:57already
45:58it's extremely rare to hang on to a
46:01world record for as long as he did there
46:04was absolutely no shame in passing the
46:06torch to kazuya and riding off into the
46:09sunset leaving a streak of 29
46:12consecutive world records as your legacy
46:15he could finally put the thousands of
46:17hours spent on this category behind him
46:19and move on with his speedrunning career
46:23but Abney said forget all that and five
46:26days later he did this

46:59crazy well that didn't take long it had
47:03taken kazuya over a year of grinding to
47:06Edge out the world record it took Abney
47:09five days to thoroughly beat him back
47:11this was a pretty wild run from start to
47:14finish it began with triple Reds plus
47:16star on calamari desert and he just kept
47:19gaining time from there after nailing
47:22Royal Raceway three out of three Avenue
47:24is in position for a massive record
47:27but then he kind of backed off he bled a
47:31bit of time by playing the next courses
47:33safe and then despite getting triple
47:35shrooms on Yoshi Valley he lost 8 more
47:38seconds by really lining up the jumps
47:40carefully
47:41this run actually had the RNG for a
47:44sub-23 minute run but by playing it safe
47:48Abney wound up with a 23-21
47:52still an excellent record although it
47:54had the potential to be even better
47:56look Abney may have briefly lost the
47:59world record to kazuya but it was only
48:01by one second he had still held the
48:03record for all but five days of the past
48:06seven years
48:08all concerns of his demise had been
48:10greatly exaggerated
48:12he just had a run go deep on Pace for a
48:14sub-23 something kazuya had never been
48:18close to
48:19it was time to go for the kill and push
48:22the record Out Of Reach

48:56I guess it is possible okay
49:02ah it's over Dude
49:05dang it
49:17come on don't do this
49:20it was so good dude what is that
49:28I was stuck
49:35No I barely missed
49:38dang

50:33it had been weeks and while he'd had
50:36some promising runs something always
50:38went wrong to prevent a world record on
50:41Yoshi Valley he was trying to go for a
50:44risky strategy that would avoid triple
50:46shrooms but his success rate wasn't
50:48great with it in his Royal Raceway look
50:51had just been disastrous
50:54meanwhile kazuya was still right there
50:57he was seven seconds behind Abney but
51:00he'd gotten the record before
51:02could he take advantage of this
51:04opportunity

51:44all right
51:53he had done it again and this time it
51:56was a pretty sizable Improvement he had
51:59a mistake early on Toad's Turnpike when
52:02he missed a lap Skip and had to do it
52:03again but he was able to climb out of
52:06the hole and didn't have another time
52:07lost until he missed the lap skip on
52:09Yoshi Valley
52:11but beyond that it was a beautiful run
52:14and kazuya had just proven something his
52:17one second world record wasn't a fluke
52:20he had actually caught up to Abney
52:23despite slower driving he had matched or
52:27perhaps surpassed him at hitting the
52:29game's shortcuts kazuya was the champion
52:31of 150 cc skips in the year since this
52:36record was set nobody has come close to
52:39approaching their times
52:41Abney and kazuya are more than a minute
52:43ahead of the competition
52:46both players have been grinding the
52:47category recently and have done
52:49thousands of attempts each
52:51they've both had promising runs
52:54but there's only been one additional
52:56world record
53:05this run was eerily similar to abney's
53:082321 it got off to an incredible start
53:11then slowly bled time partially by
53:15playing it safe on a few courses
53:17only difference was this record was
53:20seven seconds faster than abney's run
53:23it's hard to lose a world record it's a
53:26side of speedrunning that doesn't get
53:28talked about much everyone's excited
53:30when one player gets the record as they
53:32should be but to be on the other side
53:34can be brutal especially if it's a
53:37record that you've held for seven years
53:39it's become a constant part of your life
53:42at that point
53:43but it's important to remember nobody
53:46owns a world record
53:48and to illustrate what I mean I'm going
53:50to show you a clip from darbian after he
53:53set a world record in Super Mario
53:55Brothers any percent back in 2016 people
53:58were telling him that the Run was nearly
54:00dead and he might hold on to the record
54:02forever
54:04but turbian responded by saying this
54:07so instead of saying something silly
54:09like I think it will be over very soon
54:11and it's been a crazy ride I'm going to
54:13say that this game will never be over
54:15and the ride will only get crazier and I
54:19am just participating in one small part
54:21of the middle of the ride and there are
54:24many talented people who helped build
54:26the ride before me and there'll be many
54:27talented people who help finish off the
54:30ride after me more accurate words have
54:33never been spoken the point of all this
54:36be proud to have been a part of your
54:38game's history even after your times
54:40have been beaten
54:41because unlike a world record your
54:44legacy can last forever
