0:00On a distant island, Joan spends several
0:02minutes with her ear on the ground while
0:03a volcano keeps expelling smoke nearby.
0:05>> [music]
0:06>> In the evening, Joan and her group of
0:07activists gather in the forest where
0:09they've built a special structure for
0:10sacrifices. She puts coins on her
0:13mother's face and promises she'll find
0:14the right three souls to complete the
0:15prophecy. Then the structure is set on
0:18fire and the mother gives her last
0:19breath before she's burned down.
0:20>> [music]
0:21>> Afterward, the group opens a secret
0:22hatch to reveal camouflage clothes and a
0:24dangerous amount of firearms. They leave
0:26in the morning ready to finish [music]
0:27their mission. Meanwhile, washed-up
0:29actor Mike is on his way to an elite
0:30fundraising gala where he hopes to make
0:32his big comeback to Hollywood. His agent
0:34Oliver reminds him that if anyone
0:35mentions his scandal, he must ignore
0:37them, which only makes Mike more
0:38nervous. When Mike realizes he isn't in
0:41an electric vehicle, he yells at Oliver
0:42because it'll look bad to arrive at an
0:44event dedicated to climate change. He
0:46makes the limo stop at a safe distance
0:48and take [music] some pictures for
0:49social media before walking the rest of
0:50the way. The gala is being held inside a
0:53mine on the distant island. Paparazzi
0:55are everywhere and currently their
0:56attention is on tech billionaire Ben and
0:58his pop star wife Gloria. When it's
1:00Mike's turn, [music] he takes a second
1:01to put himself together. Then he turns
1:03around to be all charming for the
1:04cameras. In one of the tunnels, a guard
1:07sees Joan's sister Louise and tries to
1:08block her only to be knocked out with a
1:10taser. Then Joan's group begins marching
1:12through the tunnel. At the gala, Mike
1:14tries to understand the strange artwork
1:16to no avail. Gloria approaches him to
1:18say she has a production company and the
1:20perfect role for him, but they're
1:21interrupted by Ben who mocks Mike for
1:23his scandal. Swallowing his annoyance,
1:25Mike repeats [music] the speech Oliver
1:26taught him taking responsibility for his
1:28mistake and pointing out he had an
1:30emotional breakdown. At that moment,
1:31Oliver brings his phone with a call from
1:33an important playwright. So Mike goes to
1:35one of the tunnels to talk in private.
1:36He [music] tells the playwright that
1:37he's eager to work again and create
1:39meaningful stuff, but when the
1:40playwright hears where he is, he can't
1:42take him seriously. He points out that
1:43famous people talk about causing change,
1:45but they go to these events on their
1:46private jets and eat expensive food
1:48never using their money to really make
1:49that change.
1:50>> [music]
1:50>> Desperate to make a good impression,
1:52Mike tells the playwright that he
1:53actually came to the event to tell
1:55everyone the truth to their faces.
1:56Behind a sign,
1:57>> [music]
1:57>> Jones' group overhears the whole
1:59conversation. They wait until Mike is
2:01gone to move again. When Mike finds his
2:03table, Gloria keeps staring at him from
2:05afar. Ben gets jealous, so he shows his
2:07friends a video of Mike's meltdown on
2:08the red carpet. It turns out he showed
2:10up in his underwear and burned the
2:11posters promoting his movie with a
2:13flamethrower while yelling that he was a
2:14fraud. Mike can hear the video and their
2:16laughter, so Gloria insults her husband
2:18and rushes to Mike's side to comfort
2:20him. Mike shares that he lost his dad
2:22and it's been hard for him, but Gloria
2:23is only interested in taking a selfie.
2:25After Gloria leaves, Mike takes out his
2:27phone and begins writing a speech to
2:29call out the party goers for their fake
2:30climate concerns. Oliver points out it's
2:32a bad idea, but Mike ignores him. At the
2:35mine entrance, the activists surround
2:36the guards and easily overpower them in
2:38just a couple of minutes. Then they take
2:40over the [music] kitchen, where they
2:41quickly capture all the cooks. Joan
2:43moves the curtains to look at the main
2:44room, where Louise is sneaking in.
2:46Everyone's eyes are on the host Anna, so
2:48they don't notice her. On a big screen,
2:50a special video made by Ben is played.
2:52He talks about the great disasters
2:54caused [music] by climate change, but
2:55also about the new energy source he's
2:56discovered. Obviously, this is just a
2:58business for him. When the video [music]
3:00ends, everyone claps except for Mike,
3:02who tells Oliver to film everything
3:03before he rushes to the stage. He calls
3:05Ben out for wanting to solve climate
3:07change by doing more mining and says
3:08everyone here is a hypocrite. After
3:10announcing that they need to do better,
3:12he rushes back to his table and tells
3:13Oliver to post the video. Next, the
3:16Mother Nature troop does a special
3:17performance showing their dance as a
3:19metaphor for climate change. There are
3:21some men with flamethrowers representing
3:22damage to nature, [music] and Mike
3:24worries they may be mocking him. As he
3:26looks around, he sees Ben with a strange
3:28smile, Louise sitting at a table, and an
3:30old man who turns around to reveal his
3:31dead father's face. On the verge of a
3:33panic attack, Mike runs to a tunnel to
3:35take his medicine and doesn't see the
3:37activists running behind him. Suddenly,
3:39the activists burst into the main room,
3:40and the crowd thinks they're part of the
3:41performance. They turn the music off and
3:44Joan fires in the air, only to receive
3:45applause. When she starts her speech
3:47about the planet, the crowd claps
3:49[music] again. Joan has to shut them up
3:51before announcing that the world will
3:52end in two days. She gets very angry
3:54when everyone pulls out their phones to
3:56record her. Anna tries to take control
3:58of the situation, [music]
3:59but the activists hold her down on a
4:00table and Joan uses a machete to chop
4:02off her hand. The crowd finally
4:04understands that this is real and agrees
4:05to surrender their phones.
4:06>> [music]
4:07>> Some of the activists bandage Anna's
4:08injury. The others set up explosives on
4:10a sign. Joan then gets on the stage and
4:12explains that she needs [music] three
4:13people to stop the apocalyptic event
4:15that will happen in two days. Louise
4:17looks at all the famous people and
4:18chooses Ben, who is quickly restrained
4:20and taken to the stage. Joan's brother
4:22Arthur goes backstage to check out the
4:24performers. The main singer gestures at
4:26her dancer Katie,
4:27>> [music]
4:27>> who ends up being chosen. Arthur takes
4:29her to the main room and tells her I
4:30love you before she's restrained,
4:31[music] too. Lastly, it's Joan's turn to
4:34choose, but she can't see the face she
4:35seeks, so she presses her ear to the
4:37floor to ask for a sign.
4:39>> [music]
4:39>> In the bathroom, Mike is looking at the
4:40social media reactions to his gala
4:42posts, which are outstandingly negative.
4:44At that moment, he hears the volcano
4:46rumbling. In the main room, Joan also
4:48hears the volcano and takes it as a
4:50message. The crowd will choose the
4:51third. She asks the attendees to split
4:53into two lines, but everyone is too
4:55scared to move. When Joan mentions that
4:57the chosen ones will be sacrificed,
4:59Gloria freaks out and begs for mercy for
5:00her husband. Joan immediately holds her
5:02down and gets ready to chop her hand
5:04off, but Ben stops her by convincing the
5:06crowd to do as she says. The tables are
5:08moved and the crowd is split. Joan walks
5:10between the lines and points at
5:11different people, so the other stars
5:13must clap [music] to choose the third
5:14person. Gloria receives lots of
5:16applause, but also does a very old man
5:18and a disabled guy. At that moment, Mike
5:20enters the room and he gets the biggest
5:21reaction. He thinks he's being
5:23celebrated and walks between the lines
5:24as if he was a hero. The activists take
5:26his phone before he reaches the stage,
5:28where Ben tells [music] him that these
5:29people are terrorists. They're
5:31interrupted by the arrival of the
5:32police, who claim they surrounded the
5:34mine. Joan wants Ben to talk to them,
5:36but Ben says Mike is better at speeches.
5:37[music]
5:38Mike follows Joan out and actually takes
5:40a moment to learn the name of her
5:41organization and their message. At the
5:43entrance, [music] Mike talks to with
5:45cops and defends the activists' mission,
5:47obviously unaware of the sacrifice
5:48issue. A camera records his whole
5:50speech, which ends with no justice, no
5:52peace. Joan holds his hand when she
5:54takes him back inside and calls him
5:56special. Mike asks where she's from and
5:58her answer is from the fire. In the main
6:00room, [music] the activists have made
6:01half the crowd undress. They form a
6:03circle around Mike to officially choose
6:05him as their [music] third soul, and he
6:06sees it as a compliment. The un-clothed
6:08stars are taken out of the room while
6:09Mike finally notices the chopped hand on
6:11a table and realizes how bad the
6:13situation is. The activists guide the
6:15three chosen ones to a quarter where
6:16they finally activate the explosives in
6:18the sign. The resulting smoke allows
6:20them to escape unnoticed while the
6:22un-clothed group runs out of the mine.
6:23After taking a ladder, the activists and
6:25their hostages walk around the mine.
6:27From this spot, Mike sees that tents
6:29have been set up at the entrance and
6:30reporters are already here. Soon even
6:32the military arrives. In the main room,
6:35the remaining activists are still
6:36watching over the rest of the attendees.
6:38Joan's group makes it to their boat and
6:39leaves the island without issues. During
6:41the trip, Ben tries to offer money for
6:43his freedom, but Joan angrily snaps at
6:45him and defends being loyal to her
6:46beliefs. When looking at Mike, she
6:48smiles sweetly, and Ben thinks Mike
6:50should use this connection to their
6:51advantage. Arthur keeps staring at Katie
6:53and mentioning love, which creeps her
6:55out. At that moment, a searchlight from
6:57a helicopter appears above them. Ben
6:59immediately stands up and starts
7:00yelling, but [music] Arthur strikes him
7:02down with his gun. The activists quickly
7:04stop the boat and cover it with
7:05camouflage fabric while Louise threatens
7:07Ben with a knife to keep him quiet.
7:08Katie finds a glass shard on the floor
7:10and secretly begins cutting her
7:11restraints. Joan asks Mike what his
7:13deepest belief [music] is, and he says
7:15he believes in the power of stories to
7:16change the world, which was a philosophy
7:18his dad taught him. In return, Joan
7:21explains she believes in the cleansing
7:22power of death.
7:23>> [music]
7:23>> When he wonders if she's really going to
7:24kill them, she doesn't answer. The
7:26chopper searches the area for several
7:28minutes and leaves without seeing the
7:29boat. Outside the mine, Oliver tells
7:31reporters that Mike is a true hero who
7:33can handle himself.
7:34>> [music]
7:34>> Soon all channels are playing found
7:36footage of the activist group. The
7:37authorities always knew the group was
7:39living on the island, but they [music]
7:40were considered low risk and weren't
7:41taken seriously. All the children were
7:43taught to use weapons and how to hunt
7:45from a young age. Joan's father Gunnar
7:47is a Nobel Prize scientist and started
7:49the project with his wife, his three
7:50kids, [music] other scientists and their
7:52children. Gunnar had been ostracized by
7:54the scientific community for his crazy
7:56theories about volcanoes. As a child,
7:58Joan had dreams of the volcano telling
8:00her that the world would end.
8:01>> [music]
8:01>> In the morning, the boat arrives at the
8:03island where the community lives. They
8:05see some armed people in red and Arthur
8:06thinks his dad knows they're coming.
8:08Joan isn't worried, saying he knows he
8:10can't escape his fate. Mike watches the
8:12siblings hug with genuine affection.
8:14Afterward, the hostages are taken to a
8:15cave. Joan explains that Ben will be
8:17thrown into the volcano and Katie will
8:19be adored by many hands, but Mike gets
8:21[music] to choose his fate. First, they
8:22must drink the special potion to
8:24understand their destiny. When Katie and
8:26Ben refuse,
8:26>> [music]
8:27>> the activists force the potion down
8:28their throats. Mike chooses to drink it
8:30to avoid trouble while Ben goes on a
8:32rant to protest, [music] only to be
8:33silenced by a slap. Then, Joan drags
8:35Mike to a pond and asks what he sees. He
8:37doesn't know what to answer, so she says
8:39she sees a hero. All he has to do is let
8:41them kill him. Meanwhile, Arthur takes
8:43Katie away to prepare her for her
8:45duties, ignoring her when she insists
8:46she isn't a virgin and that her daughter
8:48nature persona was just part of a
8:49performance. He gives her a dead bird
8:51with flowers in its chest, proudly
8:53presenting it as his craft, but she
8:54hates it. Arthur explains that this is
8:56his special spot and implies he has
8:58another love. So, Katie tries to
9:00convince him to go to that woman because
9:01she isn't [music] worth it. Arthur snaps
9:03at her, yelling that he's cursed. It
9:05turns out he's in love with Joan, but
9:07for the prophecy to work he must kill
9:08his lover, [music] and he refuses murder
9:10his own sister. As Arthur comes closer,
9:12Katie finally finishes cutting the
9:14restraints and uses the shard to defend
9:15herself, accidentally slashing Arthur's
9:17neck. She apologizes to him but still
9:20runs away while Arthur yells for help.
9:21Joan soon finds Arthur covered in blood.
9:24He apologizes for always being afraid of
9:25their father even when he isn't around
9:27and tells Joan he loves her. Joan says
9:29it back and kisses his forehead as he
9:30dies in her arms. Hearing those words,
9:33>> [music]
9:33>> Louise decides that Joan must replace
9:35Katie and hands her the potion, which
9:36Joan immediately drinks. Afterward, the
9:38group cremates Arthur's body. The sight
9:40makes Mike feel many confusing emotions,
9:42so he asks Ben to hold his hand for
9:44comfort. Joan tells him that those
9:45emotions are the truth of who he is.
9:47When night falls, Joan, Ben, and Mike
9:50lay down on the grass in their
9:51underwear. While they wait for the
9:53potion to kick in, Joan explains [music]
9:54that she killed her mother yesterday and
9:56she'll kill her father tomorrow. Soon
9:58the three of them start hallucinating
9:59and Mike sees himself as the soldier
10:01from his last movie. He follows his
10:03father to a cemetery and stares at his
10:04grave,
10:05>> [music]
10:05>> but he can't cry a single tear.
10:07Suddenly, Joan appears with the
10:08activists and yells at him for being
10:09unable to cry. Mike runs into a random
10:12room, where Joan appears dressed as his
10:13nurse ex-girlfriend. She complains about
10:15all the times he cheated on her and the
10:17fact that he never gave her kids. After
10:19she leaves, [music] the room turns on
10:20its side. Mike looks at himself in the
10:22mirror and grabs his hair, which starts
10:24to fall. The room turns again when he
10:26sees a hand in the shower. Mike moves
10:28the curtains and finds his dad, who asks
10:30him why he left him. He also tells him
10:32to choose his own path. Mike pushes down
10:34the fake wall and finds a city set on
10:36fire. Joan is dressed as a Gayle
10:37employee and tells him that his world is
10:39fake. Only the fire is real. She then
10:41grabs a piece of wall and eats it
10:43because it's actually cake. After
10:44running a bit more, Mike [music] is half
10:46bald. He finds Katie on a pyre while
10:48Joan appears both as her current and
10:50younger self, dressed as nuns. They tell
10:52him to save the world because it's who
10:53[music] he is. Mike then crawls through
10:55a tunnel, losing the rest of his hair
10:57and the soldier uniform. He climbs to
10:59the top of a volcano, where Joan and Ben
11:01keep telling him to jump. Panicking,
11:03Mike lies down and covers his ears. At
11:05that moment, Mike wakes up on a bed and
11:07thinks he's seeing his dad again, but
11:08it's actually Gunnar, who invites him to
11:10his kitchen. Mike eats the offered
11:11breakfast [music] but keeps getting
11:12distracted by strange noises outside.
11:15Gunnar blows a whistle to get his
11:16attention and explains that the volcano
11:18will erupt tomorrow, killing [music]
11:19most life on the planet. He calls it an
11:21extinction event and says that Joan is
11:23delusional. Her isolated childhood
11:25caused her to develop a way to deal with
11:26her weird parents and find answers for
11:28things that science can't explain, which
11:30was encouraged by her very spiritual
11:31mother. Gunnar advises Mike to hide in
11:33this house for now while the activists
11:35take Ben to the volcano. Katie is found
11:37by reporters. Meanwhile, Mike discovers
11:40a phone and tries to call for help.
11:41However, Gunnar comes back and the phone
11:43ends up hidden in his pants. Gunnar has
11:45captured Joan and is keeping her
11:46restrained to a wheelchair. She argues
11:48with her father and reveals he used to
11:50believe too, but he dropped his beliefs
11:51when they became inconvenient. Joan
11:53tells Mike to open the door and to his
11:55shock, he discovers the forest is
11:56actually a set. He then leaves the house
11:58and finds himself in a bunker. Gunnar
12:00explains he built this to protect his
12:02family from the volcano and keeps
12:03arguing with Joan. So, Mike sneaks away
12:05by pretending to go to the bathroom. In
12:07the next room, he finds several
12:09lab-grown plants and animals. There's
12:11nobody here, so he can finally use the
12:12phone. He contacts Oliver and explains
12:15what's going on, even pointing out that
12:16he isn't truly in danger because Joan
12:18wants him to choose. This realization
12:20gives him an existential crisis. Oliver
12:22tries to tell him that everyone is
12:23seeing him as a hero now, but Mike
12:25doesn't care about money and fame
12:26anymore. He wants to do something
12:28meaningful. He asks Oliver to send a
12:30helicopter to the volcano, where he
12:32plans to do something big to solve the
12:33situation. Afterward, Mike returns to
12:35Joan and tells her that he'll jump.
12:37Gunnar protests, so Joan announces
12:39they're doing a goat run,
12:40>> [music]
12:40>> but refuses to explain what it is. She
12:42only tells Mike that the chosen one
12:44won't be killed by the volcano because
12:45he's the hero. Some of the guards drag
12:47Gunnar away while the others start
12:49shooting arrows at Joan and Mike, who
12:50start running as fast as possible. Joan
12:52kicks a guard down before they leave the
12:54fake forest and reach a tunnel that
12:55takes them to a set of very high stairs.
12:58Gunnar and a guard make it to the next
12:59floor first on an elevator and almost
13:01manage to shoot them, but Joan closes
13:03the door behind her just in time. The
13:04duo makes it to the beach and Mike
13:06celebrates as he compliments Joan's
13:07skills, only to notice there's an arrow
13:09on her hip. Joan thought she was
13:11supposed to be protected by the volcano
13:12and falls to her knees to listen to the
13:14ground. When she doesn't get an answer,
13:16Mike drags Joan to the boat and they
13:17leave the island. Soon they make it to
13:19the volcano, where the activists are
13:21waiting with Ben. While Louise stitches
13:22Joan's injury, Ben tries to tell her
13:24that Mike is only pretending he'll jump
13:26to manipulate her. Mike begins to argue
13:28with him and Joan yells to shut them up
13:30going on a rant about the deaths of her
13:31mother and her brother. She's trying to
13:33deny that she worked all these years for
13:34nothing. On their way up, Ben keeps
13:37ranting and calls reality for what it
13:38really is, even spitting at the [music]
13:40activists. Joan falls because she feels
13:42weak, but Mike helps her keep moving.
13:44Once they reach the top, Ben loses his
13:46arrogance and begs for mercy, but the
13:48guards quickly throw him into the
13:49volcano. Nothing around them changes and
13:51Joan cries as she finally doubts her
13:53beliefs. She doesn't want to jump, but
13:55the others tie her to a stretcher and
13:56begin dragging her to the lava. Joan
13:58desperately begs Mike for help and he
14:00holds her hand saying he's with her.
14:02After seeing a beautiful bird in the
14:03sky, Joan finds peace and says for the
14:05fire before she's thrown into the
14:07volcano, too. As Mike stares at the
14:09group in shock, a police helicopter
14:10finally arrives and throws a ladder for
14:12him. A second chopper soon arrives to
14:14record everything for live TV. After
14:16looking at the camera, he touches the
14:18ground and listens to all the voices
14:19Joan used to hear. Mike shares a final
14:21look with Louise and jumps. Katie cries
14:23in shock at Mike's death on the screen.
14:25In the bunker, the guards burn Gunnar,
14:27too. On top of the volcano, Louise is
14:30relieved to see that the rumbling has
14:31stopped.
