0:00hey everyone welcome back uh today we're
0:02going to continue our conversation going
0:04over anatomy and physiology in all of
0:07our systems and today's system is the
0:09digestive system so in focusing on the
0:12digestive system we need to first talk
0:14about what's called the alimentary canal
0:16now the alimentary canal is going to be
0:20everything that starts with the mouth
0:21all the way down to what you can't
0:23really see in this Photograph but it's
0:25called the anus now everything within
0:28the alimentary canal performs the duties
0:31of digestion and digestion by definition
0:34is mechanical and chemical breakdown of
0:37foods into forms the body and cells can
0:40absorb uh this is done by using organs
0:44of the digestive system as well as what
0:46we will cover as known as accessory
0:48organs so let's first talk about the
0:51function of the digestive system so we
0:53know that the digestive system is in
0:56moving food throughout the body allowing
0:58our body to be able to absorb what it
1:00needs for energy and for nutrition and
1:04being able to disperse what would be
1:05considered as waste how that is done is
1:08by two words that are here in red you've
1:11got churning and peristalsis so churning
1:14is a word to Define what happens when
1:16your body takes in food mixes it with
1:19the acids within the stomach for
1:22digestion that would be churning now
1:25once the food is churned uh it then goes
1:28through a process called peristalsis and
1:31peristalsis you'll hear me reference in
1:33a few of our body systems but
1:35peristalsis is in reference to uh
1:38movement it's an involuntary wave-like
1:41restriction that happens within the body
1:44that allows things to be able to pass
1:46through you'll hear the term peristalsis
1:49in reference to the esophagus and you'll
1:51hear it in reference to the stomach here
1:54you can see them both and so this would
1:57be a full stomach here and as it's
1:59starting to churn and go through the
2:02process of peristalsis you're going to
2:04see the stomach starts to empty and then
2:06the food then makes its way through the
2:08stomach goes into the intestines for
2:10absorption
2:12also here within the esophagus this is
2:15just the movement of food working its
2:17way down the esophagus done by the exact
2:20same process of peristalsis which is an
2:23involuntary wave-like contraction that
2:26occurs to allow contents to move through
