0:00so the nervous system is broken down
0:02into two categories you have the sensual
0:05nervous system refers to as the CNS and
0:08then the peripheral nervous system that
0:10is often referred to as the pns central
0:13nervous system is composed of the brain
0:15and the spinal cord peripheral are the
0:18nerves that are throughout the body so
0:21everything else that you see here in
0:23this diagram that works its way through
0:25the limbs would be part of the
0:26peripheral nervous system so within the
0:29peripheral nervous system you have two
0:32components the somatic nervous system
0:34and the autonomic nervous system with
0:38the peripheral nerves you have 12 pairs
0:41of cranial nerves and 31 pairs of spinal
0:44nerves these nerves Branch off from the
0:47spinal cord and their main function or
0:50responsibility is to carry nerve signals
0:53throughout the body so again that sense
0:55of touch sense of pain that we have the
0:58ability to if we can get get to the
1:00right portion of the cell remember we
1:02can block the sensation of feeling block
1:05the sensation of pain that happens
1:07through the peripheral nerves your
1:10somatic nervous system controls the
1:12body's voluntary skeletal muscles so
1:16neurons carry information to the central
1:18nervous system and here in this picture
1:21what they're giving you is an example of
1:23someone touching what is a hot stove now
1:27touching the hot stove of course it's
1:29going to burn it's going to cause pain
1:31neurons carry heat and pain Sensations
1:34to the burnt to the brain the brain
1:36processes that information and then
1:39sends the neurons the signal to move the
1:42hand away from whatever it is that is
1:44burning that would be the somatic
1:46nervous system and how it communicates
1:49autonomic nervous system works a little
1:51different the term autonomic means that
1:54these are automatic functions
1:56involuntary we don't have to think about
1:58breathing we don't have to think about
2:01our stomach digesting food those would
2:03be part of the autonomic nervous system
2:06you have What's called the sympathetic
2:08branch and the sympathetic branch
2:11controls how your body responds to
2:13stress
2:14otherwise known as the fight or flight
2:18fight or flight leads us to What's
2:20called the parasympathetic branch which
2:23is how your body recovers from that
2:25level of stress
2:26so sympathetic is going to be how you
2:29respond to the stress parasympathetic is
2:32how you recover from the stress that
2:34you've encountered and here within the
2:36autonomic nervous system you can see all
2:38the things that are controlled uh this
2:41term here reduce peristalsis and
2:43secretion within the stomach again the
2:46digestion uh glucose how it's released
2:50and how the body takes it in and
2:51utilizes it part of the autonomic
2:54nervous system these are all things that
2:56we don't necessarily have to think about
2:58our body does these things automatically
3:02bladder contraction
3:04saliva flow our eyes the uh the dry eye
3:09does our eye have enough fluid or is it
3:11a dry eye that's part of the autonomic
3:13nervous system again autonomic things
3:16that we don't have to think about
3:17they're going to be
3:19um control through the central nervous
3:21system
