0:00hi there welcome back to the playlist or
0:02welcome to the playlist if you're just
0:04joining in this section of the playlist
0:06in this video we're going to be looking
0:08at networking on LinkedIn probably the
0:11most useful part of the site how to find
0:15people how to grow your network how to
0:17actually make those initial steps those
0:20initial approaches the reason LinkedIn
0:23is so useful for this is just a sheer
0:26number of people on there like I said in
0:28the first section of the playlist near a
0:30billion over 900 million members so
0:33that's a lot of people to connect with
0:36and because of how connected we are you
0:39would be amazed how many people you have
0:42access to because of this how many
0:43people you can reach out to get in front
0:47of and have really useful conversations
0:49with and you never know because of that
0:52what opportunities that might actually
0:55lead to now the way LinkedIn is set up
0:57there are three different types of
0:58connections the first first wrong first
1:01connections are people you directly are
1:04connected with people who you know
1:06second think about it as friends of
1:08friends someone who you have someone in
1:10common with you're not however connected
1:13and then the third level of connection
1:15is everybody else now you can connect
1:18with any of these it's not really
1:21important this is just what you see when
1:24you actually use the app or the website
1:26now there is a certain level of
1:28etiquette when you are connecting with
1:29people but you can connect to anyone so
1:32just because someone has a third level
1:33connection doesn't mean you can't
1:34connect to them that's absolutely fine
1:37but when you are connecting you do need
1:39to send a message don't just rely on the
1:42LinkedIn standard message that it sends
1:44send something a little bit personal
1:46that you've actually written that you
1:47put some effort in and just wanting a
1:50job is not the only reason to connect
1:52that generally puts people's backs up
1:55what you want to do is approach with the
1:58idea that you want to learn from this
2:00person whatever that might be whether
2:03it's what they look for when they're
2:05recruiting people what the industry does
2:08when it's recruiting people how it works
2:10that kind of thing so approach when
2:13you're connecting with a more open mind
2:15than I just want a job and don't be
2:18afraid of just waiting for a response
2:20people not responding is absolutely
2:22normal and actually the most active time
2:26for the LinkedIn site is around about
2:297:00 on a Sunday night so don't worry
2:33too much about oh I've not heard back
2:35because they might just not have looked
2:36at their profile and that's absolutely
2:38normal send these connection requests
2:41off and just think about it as well I
2:43might get a response I might not it's
2:45almost like a numers game now in terms
2:47of how to do it dead simple if you're on
2:49a laptop or a PC go on someone's profile
2:53beneath their profile picture and their
2:55headline one of the reason that's so
2:57important in the first video you'll see
2:59the connect button but just click that
3:01and that will take you through to the
3:02next screen which is this little popup
3:04and here you will want to add a note
3:06this is where you put your connection
3:09messaging and like I said really
3:11important you are much more likely to
3:13get someone responding if you add a
3:16personalized note this way now on a
3:18smartphone it's slightly different so
3:21this is what you'll come up with on a
3:23smartphone on the App instead of doing
3:26the standard connect which will just
3:28send a connection request you you want
3:30to tap the three dots as you'll see on
3:32the screen which will bring you to this
3:33where you want to tap that personalized
3:36note button to make sure you can put
3:38that little note in can't stressing
3:39enough how much of a difference that
3:42will make in terms of people getting
3:44back to you on these approaches that
3:46Personal Touch really does help a lot on
3:48LinkedIn you are limited in terms of how
3:51long that connection note can be so
3:54something as simple as this would be
3:56absolutely fine hi I'm X studying X at
4:00University of Manchester saw your
4:02profile really interested in your career
4:04Journey if you have a few minutes I'd
4:07appreciate a chat maybe you say
4:09something along the lines of can I ask
4:11your advice that is really nice it does
4:15a few things first introduce yourself
4:17obviously but it asks for something
4:20that's easy for them to give if you ask
4:22straight away for a job they can say ah
4:25no sorry we don't have anything at the
4:26moment and that's the end of the
4:28conversation this keeps it open and
4:31especially if you ask for that advice
4:33you're making someone feel quite good
4:35because all right I'm important enough
4:37if someone to come to me for advice it
4:39it's a bit of a psychological trick but
4:41it can help quite a bit another example
4:43might be something like this where maybe
4:45you've met them at a career fair or
4:47another event just mentioning that and
4:50saying something like this I'd be really
4:52Keen to learn more about your career
4:54path dead simple really personal and
4:57makes them far more likely say yeah sure
4:58why not it brings me to have to find
5:01these people and a really useful tool is
5:04the alumni search on LinkedIn as a
5:07student at Manchester or former student
5:10at Manchester you have access to
5:13everybody that has studied at Manchester
5:15and is on LinkedIn and that should be
5:18obvious is really really useful the
5:21reason it's so useful is obviously
5:23because the university has a huge
5:25network but also you can connect with
5:27people who have had very similar
5:29experiences to you but maybe two 3 years
5:33on so they can give you that kind of
5:35advice of what should you be doing you
5:38can also see where they ended up and the
5:41people from your course are generally
5:43speaking where they actually end up
5:45where they find their careers if you're
5:48struggling for that kind of idea of what
5:50you want to do or where you should go
5:52you can get some ideas from people
5:54who've been in your position before
5:56that's why I said in the first video yes
5:59netw working really really powerful but
6:01it's also a really powerful research
6:04tool all you have to do go to the
6:06University's LinkedIn page and go into
6:09the alumni tab that will bring up all
6:11the alumni and from there you can then
6:14start digging into a bit and getting
6:16that extra level of data then you can
6:19start to see where these people work and
6:21live what they do what skills they have
6:23what they studied what their experiences
6:26are so you can actually see what their
6:29career paths have been like what was
6:31their next step after uni and then maybe
6:33what was the step after that what did
6:36their career Journey look like whether
6:38it's 2 three 10 years maybe ahead in
6:43inverted commas of you and it's even
6:46more useful because then you can start
6:48to think about all right what about my
6:50course and you can see a breakdown of
6:52where these people work like I said
6:55where they live what they're doing but
6:57you can do it by your own individual
6:59course
7:00which isn't necessarily going to tell
7:01you exactly what you should do but will
7:04give you a sense of what your options
7:06might be what did most people do or is
7:09there a particular possibility of one
7:11career path over another and it will
7:13just give you maybe some ideas like I
7:16said but maybe a bit of reassurance or
7:18just a bit of a sense of what's
7:20achievable what's possible what you
7:22should be looking at that brings me to
7:24the end of the networking section of the
7:26playlist if this is something that you
7:28are considering you still maybe want a
7:31little bit of reassurance on please do
7:33come and see the service we have our
7:36advisor appointments where we can go
7:37through some of this with
7:39you next in the series and we'll be
7:42finishing on this we'll be looking at
7:44using LinkedIn to do some job searching
7:47and how you can make the most of it as a
7:49tool as always if you can like And
7:51subscribe that helps us grow the channel
7:54and reach more students thank you very
7:56much and I'll see you in the next video
