0:00next category here in microorganisms we
0:03have fungi
0:05and fungi is actually here's where our
0:07terminology is we've got fungi and then
0:09fungus uh so fungi is going to be the
0:12singular form
0:16fungus is actually mold it's a single
0:19cell
0:20and it forms into what we call yeast
0:23very good example here is in the
0:25photograph where you see athlete's foot
0:30grows on or in animals and plants and
0:34with fungus most do not normally cause
0:37disease
0:39again with all of our microorganisms a
0:42lot of these are going to be harmless
0:44unless we're dealing with someone that
0:47has a compromised immune system or a
0:50weakened immune system and at that point
0:52persons with weakened immune systems are
0:54are going to be at a higher risk for
0:57serious fungal infections
1:00oftentimes fungus can be useful
1:04and it is a source of antibiotics
1:07common disease-causing fungi
1:10we have thrush
1:12candidiasis is the term for that uh
1:15otherwise known as a vaginal yeast
1:18infection and it shows the same
1:20characteristics within the mouth it's an
1:22overgrowth of normal flora so this is a
1:25flora that technically wouldn't be
1:27harmful
1:29but it can cause an overgrowth
1:33and you see the same characteristics on
1:35the mouth that you would see if it were
1:38a vaginal yeast infection
1:41and then at the bottom there we have
1:42ringworm which is also called athlete's
1:45foot and that's going to be from direct
1:47contact
1:49protozoa
1:51now with protozoas these are single cell
1:53parasites
1:55they can be microscopic or large enough
1:58to be seen with a microscope or without
2:02a microscope I should say they replicate
2:05rapidly inside the host
2:08and they thrive in wet environments so
2:12these are going to be in your standing
2:14water your ponds your Lakes any water
2:17that's still going to be a great host
2:20for protozoa
2:21we have common disease-causing protozoas
2:24here
2:26uh malaria is a common uh term there
2:30that's a disease
2:32and the transmission is going to be
2:34Vector which is through a mosquito
2:37trichinosis is going to be foodborne
2:40generally from under prepared pork
2:44and then we have trichomoniasis which is
2:47sexually contacted so that's going to be
2:50skin to skin
2:52so lastly in our microorganisms we'll
2:54wrap up with our multi-cellular
2:56parasites and with our multicellular
2:58parasites these cause infestations which
3:02lead to infection
3:03most common sources would be lice bed
3:06bugs scabies helmets pinworms tapeworms
3:10and you can see in the picture there
3:12you've got headlouse body louse and crab
3:16loss all considered multicellular common
3:19disease causing multicellular would be
3:22just that the head lice transmission is
3:25going to be infested hair
3:27scabies is through contact
3:31tapeworm foodborne
3:34round worm transmitted through
3:36contaminated soil
