0:00so let's take a look very quickly at
0:01some of the diseases and disorders there
0:03associated with the endocrine system uh
0:06we talked about diabetes and with
0:09diabetes notice we have a type 1 type 2
0:12and gestational
0:14type 1 is going to be where the body
0:16stops making insulin this is a disorder
0:20that usually occurs at Birth and it will
0:24require insulin replacement
0:26type 2 associated with obesity sometimes
0:30genetically linked and then we have
0:33gestational now gestational diabetes is
0:36an interesting form of diabetes as it
0:38only occurs during pregnancy usually
0:41temporary and once the baby is born
0:43gestational diabetes dissipates it's
0:47gone we have polycystic ovary syndrome
0:50this is going to be associated with
0:52irregular menstrual cycles
0:55it's going to cause elevated hormone
0:58levels as well as cysts on ovaries
1:01polycystic is many cysts so these are
1:04many cysts that develop on the ovaries
1:08gigantuism or acromegaly
1:11results from an excess of growth hormone
1:14from the pituitary gland
1:16we have hyperthyroidism and
1:19hypothyroidism
1:21hyperthyroidism is an autoimmune
1:24disorder uh this is categorized under
1:27one of those diseases or disorders where
1:29the body unfortunately attacks itself
1:33uh it's described by excessive thyroid
1:36hormone release can cause weight loss
1:39heat tolerance anxiety and increased
1:42heart rate
1:45hypothyroidism is on the opposite scale
1:48so this is an underactive thyroid gland
1:52and it causes the opposite so weight
1:54gain fatigue slow heart rate
1:58myxedema which is a term referring to
2:01swelling of the skin and the underlying
2:03tissues here we have credinism
2:07and that's a condition of severe
2:09physical and mental retardation and it's
2:12due to an iodine deficiency
2:15that iodine deficiency is linked to the
2:19deficiency of the thyroid hormones that
2:22are produced in early pregnancy
2:26Cushing's syndrome high levels of the
2:29hormone cortisol from the adrenal glands
2:31over long periods of time
2:35and lastly we have goiter goiter is
2:39going to be in a regular growth of the
2:41thyroid gland you can usually see it
2:43here on the patient's throat uh the nice
2:46thing is we do have a treatment for and
2:48it's treated with either iodine or
2:50through surgery for removal
