0:00so now that we know about using our
0:03personal protective equipment we've
0:05discussed medical asepsis and the
0:07importance of hand washing let's talk
0:10about what we're trying to avoid here so
0:12we have some common categories of
0:14microorganisms and the first one there
0:17is bacteria so bacteria is defined by a
0:20single cell microorganism that can
0:23survive without living tissue this is
0:27what causes bacteria to be able to
0:29spread the way it does because it
0:31doesn't require a living organism to
0:33live on there are various
0:36classifications and shapes for bacteria
0:39and they're also defined by aerobic and
0:42anaerobic so aerobic is going to be
0:46bacteria that requires air in order to
0:48be able to grow and multiply then we
0:51have bacteria that can grow without air
0:54a or and means absent or without so
0:57anaerobic is without air so this is
1:00going to be bacteria that can grow and
1:03multiply without air
1:05as we go further into our modules we'll
1:07start discussing uh blood cultures and
1:10with blood cultures they're done in two
1:12ways uh we actually can do a blood
1:15culture aerobic and anaerobic and so
1:18what we're looking for is we're looking
1:19for bacteria that may be within the
1:22blood and this is usually done we don't
1:24have a distinct diagnosis for a patient
1:27but we're determining what's growing
1:29with air and without air so that the
1:31provider can better diagnose the patient
1:34microorganisms also belong to distinct
1:36groups and here in the photograph what
1:39you see is a vector
1:41now with vectors they live and grow only
1:44inside other living things so again this
1:48is going to be in the form of ticks or
1:50mosquitoes they require living things in
1:53order to be able to survive vectors uh
1:55require and or effectors or animals that
1:58carry bacteria
2:01and vectors are also living within a
2:04person that can be effect infected from
2:06bites we have ticks ticks can cause
2:10Rocky Mountain spotted fever
2:12Lyme disease
2:14dogs and bats can carry rabies and then
2:18of course mosquitoes carry their own
2:20share of trouble malaria Encephalitis
2:23all categorized under vectors bacteria
2:27also comes in common shapes
2:30and remember with microorganisms these
2:33are only able to be detected underneath
2:35the microscope however if there is a
2:39slide that's created with a particular
2:41bacteria it's going to have
2:43characteristics that are very similar to
2:45what you see here in the slide
2:47the term caucus there refers to
2:50something that would be in a round shape
2:53spirulum is spiral shaped vibrio shaped
2:57like a comma bacillus is Rod shaped if a
3:01provider had no idea what a patient was
3:04fighting they might create a slide look
3:07at the slide underneath the microscope
3:09and just by the characteristics here of
3:11some of the common shapes they might be
3:13able to determine the bacteria that has
3:16uh invaded that person's body some
3:19common disease-causing bacterias are
3:22pertussis which is whooping cough
3:25and notice the transmission for
3:27pertussis is Airborne
3:30so in definition by Airborne remember
3:33this is something that is light it's
3:35flowing it has the ability to travel
3:38large distances in a rapid amount of
3:41time we have diphtheria which is in the
3:44droplet form
3:46droplets carry three to six feet
3:50meningitis also in the droplet form and
3:54tuberculosis another common one there at
3:56the bottom which is Airborne and droplet
3:59it has two means of transmission
4:02and so when we're looking at some of
4:04these bacterias I also want you all to
4:06consider what you would use as far as
4:09your form of personal protective
4:10equipment to protect yourself in an
4:13environment where you may be exposed to
4:15some of these diseases other common
4:17disease-causing bacteria is we have
4:19pneumonia also Airborne or droplet
4:22syphilis is going to be through sexual
4:25contact
4:26diarrhea foodborne Lyme disease vector
