0:16you ready so today i'm going to talk

0:19about

0:19natural disasters this is an interesting

0:22topic

0:23because depending on where you live you

0:25might have to deal with natural

0:27disasters on a regular basis

0:29let's go through some of the most

0:31notable disasters that occur

0:33throughout the world first let's talk

0:35about earthquakes

0:37for a lot of people this might just be

0:39the scariest disaster

0:40because it can strike at any moment

0:42without any notice

0:44that being said the vast majority of

0:46earthquakes are minor and cause little

0:48to no damage

0:50as a california native i've obviously

0:52witnessed my share of earthquakes but

0:54i've only ever really experienced

0:56one major earthquake it just so happens

0:59that i was at the gym

1:00and when the earthquake started all the

1:02weights and machines

1:03started shaking i was definitely a

1:05little freaked out

1:07but that's really the only time i've

1:08been in a big earthquake

1:10if you live in certain parts of the

1:11world you might never have experienced

1:14an earthquake in your whole life

1:16for example my brazilian students

1:18usually tell me that they've never been

1:20in an earthquake before

1:21but on the other hand my students from

1:23chile and japan

1:25tell me that they feel an earthquake

1:27almost every week

1:28for most of us that seems insane and

1:31what about you

1:32have you ever been in an earthquake

1:33before okay so now let's talk about

1:36hurricanes

1:37hurricanes can be some of the most

1:39destructive events imaginable

1:41take hurricane katrina for instance this

1:44category 5 hurricane

1:46absolutely devastated the city of new

1:48orleans and caused

1:49almost 2 000 deaths and over 125 billion

1:53dollars in damage

1:55of course not all hurricanes are this

1:57catastrophic

1:58but all hurricanes cause some damage

2:01when they hit

2:01land thankfully i've never been affected

2:04by a hurricane before since i'm from the

2:06west coast of the u.s

2:08which is never affected by hurricanes

2:10but for people living on the south and

2:12east coasts

2:14these storms pose a constant threat i

2:16can't imagine what it would feel like to

2:18know that there's a hurricane headed

2:20straight in my direction

2:22i hope i never find out all right

2:24another natural disaster that can cause

2:26all kinds of damage is a tornado

2:29tornadoes are a phenomenon that happen

2:31in the middle of the u.s

2:32in states like oklahoma kansas and

2:35nebraska

2:36where the landscape is really flat you

2:39might have seen tornadoes featured in

2:41american movies before

2:42where the people have to take shelter

2:44underground and wait for the tornado to

2:46pass by their town

2:48i'm glad that i've never gotten caught

2:50in the path of a tornado before

2:52alright one more natural disaster that

2:54affects people

2:55all over the world is floods floods can

2:58happen

2:59in all kinds of different places if you

3:02live in a city that doesn't have a high

3:04level of

3:04infrastructure it's likely that you've

3:07seen some flooding before

3:09in mexico for example many parts of the

3:11big cities

3:12flood every time there's heavy rain the

3:15parts of the city that are at a lower

3:17altitude

3:18become like lakes and rivers and drivers

3:21have a hard time navigating

3:23sometimes the cars just stop and wait

3:25for the rain to subside and for the

3:27water to clear out

3:29as you can imagine the traffic becomes a

3:31complete mess

3:32i really hate the rainy season in mexico

3:35because

3:35all of this is a normal occurrence

3:38floods may not be the scariest natural

3:40disaster

3:41but they can be a huge inconvenience and

3:43they can become dangerous

3:45which natural disaster seems the

3:46scariest to you

3:48alright that's all for today leave a

3:50comment and tell me if you've ever

3:52experienced a natural disaster
