0:00hi everyone today's lesson is all about
0:03microbiology and if you recall back when
0:06we were learning our medical terms we
0:08learned that ology means study of and so
0:11today we will be studying the smallest
0:13form of life that is only detected
0:15underneath the microscope
0:17microorganisms are going to be
0:19everywhere in the environment usually
0:21cause no harm and they're actually
0:24microorganisms that can be beneficial or
0:26good for us
0:27as a medical assistant it's going to be
0:30important that we have basic knowledge
0:31on pathogens that are harmful versus
0:34pathogens that are harmless we need to
0:37learn how to prevent and spread disease
0:40and then we have a responsibility in
0:42taking our knowledge sharing it with our
0:45patients through patient education and
0:48hopefully helping them understand how to
0:50prevent the spread of disease here we
0:53have a term that's non-pathogens and
0:57non-pathogens are they do not cause
0:59disease under normal conditions now we
1:02have normal flora and Norma Flora is
1:06that good bacteria that I mentioned
1:07before that helps the body maintain
1:10what's homeostasis now what we know in
1:13homeostasis is it's represented by the
1:15scale it's Body Balance uh and when all
1:18your systems are functioning as they
1:20should you feel your best your body is
1:22in a state of homeostasis normal flora
1:26helps with that because it's bad
1:27bacteria that lives in and on the body
1:30and it assists with that form of the
1:33body remaining in balance
1:35Now understand that normal flora can
1:37cause infection if it invades other body
1:40areas or has a level of overgrowth
1:43typically it's found in oral cavities
1:45and also within the gastrointestinal
1:48tract as well as on the skin
1:51and you can see some examples here in
1:53the photograph as to what normal flora
1:55would look like if we were to view this
1:57underneath the microscope
