0:26so today i'm going to talk about

0:27creativity

0:29i feel like this is a topic that doesn't

0:30get discussed much outside of certain

0:32artistic communities

0:34however i think it's something important

0:36that plays a role in all of our lives

0:38first of all let's try to define

0:40creativity one of the definitions i

0:42found was the following

0:43the use of the imagination or original

0:46ideas

0:46this is exactly how i'd describe it when

0:49you produce something original

0:50whether it be an idea solution game or

0:53work of art

0:54you're being creative so that would mean

0:56that the opposite of being creative

0:58is doing things or copying things that

1:01other people do

1:02or tell you to do in many situations

1:04this isn't a bad thing

1:05there are a plethora of situations that

1:07don't call for creativity

1:09in these cases the best thing to do is

1:11to follow orders plans or processes that

1:13are already laid out for you

1:15when you're on the job it's probably not

1:17good for you to always try to be

1:18creative

1:19you might actually end up making things

1:21worse that way

1:22however there are many situations in

1:24which creativity is good

1:26and so we should try to foster that in

1:28ourselves and in our children

1:29i mentioned children because in my

1:31opinion creativity is an essential part

1:34of being a child

1:35for example when i was a young kid i

1:37played outside practically every day

1:39with my neighbors

1:40and the games we played involved a lot

1:42of creativity on our part

1:43we had to imagine certain scenarios

1:45think of rules to follow and invent many

1:48aspects of these games as we went along

1:50this called for creative thinking

1:52because we had to make these games

1:53interesting and fun

1:55however nowadays this type of play isn't

1:57quite as popular as it used to be

1:59sure many kids invent games and play

2:01outside but it's becoming increasingly

2:03normal for kids to spend hours in front

2:05of a screen every day

2:07their source of entertainment comes from

2:08what they're shown on this device

2:10and so they don't have to be creative to

2:12have fun some people might not consider

2:14this that big of a problem

2:15but i do i've worked with many kids in

2:17different contexts and i've definitely

2:19seen the importance of creativity in

2:21kids lives

2:22i've taught many kids that don't have

2:24this tendency to be creative

2:25and in my opinion this has had some

2:27negative effects on their lives

2:29in many cases these kids have worse

2:30communication skills

2:32and they seem to have less

2:33self-confidence however on the other

2:35hand i've known some kids who probably

2:37had too much freedom in their creativity

2:39and this also seemed to have some

2:40negative effects for example these kids

2:43sometimes had trouble following rules

2:45in summary i think that we should create

2:47an environment for our kids that fosters

2:49creativity

2:50but i also think that we should rein in

2:51that creativity at times

2:53so how can we train our creativity and

2:55become more creative in general

2:57i think the best way to do this is to do

2:59creative activities

3:01there are plenty of artistic activities

3:02that we can try our hand at

3:04for example you might want to try

3:06drawing or painting

3:07i'm certainly not good at either of

3:09these but i do engage in them from time

3:11to time and i think it really benefits

3:12me

3:13it takes me out of my comfort zone and

3:15forces me to think and move in a way

3:17that's not too familiar to me

3:19another creative activity that you might

3:20want to try is creative writing

3:23not many people engage in this activity

3:25on a regular basis but they should

3:27it makes you think of words and phrases

3:29that you might not normally use

3:30and it forces you to describe things in

3:32a way that you're not used to

3:34needless to say fiction writers are some

3:36of the most creative people out there

3:38i'm sure there are also many other

3:40activities that you could think of that

3:41could help you train your creativity

3:43okay now i'm going to ask you three

3:45questions about today's video
