0:00today's system of discussion is the
0:03urinary system and so with the urinary
0:06system you can see here in the diagram
0:09that it consists of two kidneys
0:12the ureters and the bladder now looking
0:15at the kidneys here kidneys are located
0:17near the back towards the spine you have
0:20a right in the left kidney and the
0:23primary function of kidneys is to remove
0:25waste from blood it also produces urine
0:29and when urine is produced throughout
0:31the kidneys it's filtered Works its way
0:34down the ureters here lands itself in
0:36the bladder and prepares for excretion
0:39producing urine and also maintaining the
0:43body's homeostasis are going to be the
0:46primary functions of the urinary system
0:49within the kidneys if we were to do A
0:52sagittal view slice this kidney down the
0:54middle uh what we could expect to see is
0:57the functional unit of the kidneys
0:59otherwise known as What's called the
1:01nephrons now attached to your kidneys
1:04you're going to see two ureters the
1:07ureters are small tubes that are
1:09responsible for carrying the urine that
1:12is filtered through the kidneys into the
1:14bladder to prepare for excretion what's
1:17happening here when this occurs is the
1:19term peristalsis and you've heard me
1:21mention peristalsis when it comes to
1:24other body systems as well I believe we
1:26discussed this in the digestive system
1:29peristalsis is going to be that
1:31involuntary wave-like contraction that
1:35your body experiences to be able to push
1:37substances through while we don't feel
1:40that it is what is occurring as the
1:42ureters are passing the urine through
1:44moving down you have the urinary bladder
1:48and the bladder is a small Sac located
1:51in the pelvic cavity responsible for
1:54storing your urine off of the bladder
1:57there right at the end you have what's
1:59called a urethra and the urethra is a
2:02small tube that assists with carrying
2:04the urine from the bladder outside the
2:07body the ureter in females is going to
2:10be shorter and because it's shorter it's
2:12going to place the female more at risk
2:14for experiencing urinary tract
2:16infections or pain burning that could be
2:21associated with a UTI and it just has to
2:25do with how small that your urethra is
2:27doesn't mean that males can experience
2:30urinary tract infections also it's just
2:33going to be most common in females
2:35because of the uh the length of the
2:37urethra also here we've got some terms
2:40clinical terms for urination you've got
2:42micturation and voiding all which mean
2:45urination
