0:00{Light funky background music} Ok, so it's time for that big class project and the
0:04assignment is calling for articles that come from scholarly or academic journals.
0:08What does this even mean? Aren't the articles
0:12that come up when using a search engine good enough?
0:16Well the answer to that is a little more complicated than a simple "yes" or "no".
0:20Often the results that we find, when doing a search
0:24online, will bring up a variety of sources that can include
0:28news, entertainment, trade specific information, as well as scholarly
0:32or academic material. So, what's the difference and why is
0:36this even important?
0:40The strength of any claim, position, or argument, relies on the credibility
0:44of the evidence provided, as well as the reliability of the source
0:48that's behind that evidence and that's where the academic
0:52or scholarly sources come in. These articles are written by
0:56scholars, academics, and researchers who have in-depth knowledge
1:00and experience on a subject. They will have established credentials
1:04that reflect their areas of expertise. The information in these articles
1:08will often include original research, that provides in-depth
1:12analysis of the findings. Also, a list of references
1:16can be found at the end of the piece. An additional layer of
1:20credibility is added through the extensive editorial process
1:24that publishers will use to ensure that the information is correct and
1:28that the material meets established standards. Now, lets
1:32compare that to a popular article. Is the author an expert
1:36on the topic? {Buzzer} No. Is the
1:40the article quite long providing an in-depth analysis and
1:44insight on the topic? {Buzzer} No.
1:48Does the publication provide a peer-reviewed or refereed
1:52editorial process? {Buzzer} No.
1:56Does the article include an extensive list of references?
2:00{Buzzer} No. Is there anything else that distinguishes
2:04a popular article from a scholarly article? Yes.
2:08Advertisements.

2:16and if advertisements are visible, they will be limited to scholarly material
