0:28I love to work, but I also like to put
0:31smiles on people faces.

0:37If there's a child out there that's in
0:39need, I need to help this person out.
0:45[Music]
0:47Thank you very much.

1:02When we down to our last box and you
1:06have like seven families standing on the
1:08line and you just have that one box and
1:11you don't know what exactly to do, that
1:14kills me.
1:17George is a great leader. he knows what
1:20he's doing, but um they didn't really
1:22have a system kind of set up cuz if you
1:26have a good system, I think the work
1:27takes care of itself.
1:30[Music]
1:37We call TPS the Toyota production
1:40system.
1:43The summation of many many small simple
1:46cheap improvements can have a very big
1:49impact.
1:53People are starting to understand that
1:55these basic principles of the Toyota
1:56production system apply to any kind of
1:58process. It doesn't have to be a
2:00manufacturing process.
2:02[Music]
2:05We have our way of doing it. But if
2:07there's a faster way for us to go out
2:08and get food out to people faster, then
2:11I'm all for it. I'm all for it.
2:17What about a different box size so that
2:20we're not shipping so much air? If we
2:22could go to a smaller box, we would have
2:23the benefit of being able to put more
2:25meals on the truck to serve more people.
2:28The side benefit being it's not so
2:31difficult to handle.
2:33[Music]
2:40The thing that struck me was how
2:42difficult it was for the volunteers that
2:44were there to pack that box. I mean,
2:46they were walking long distances. They
2:49were carrying heavy weight. It was kind
2:51of disarray. The table in the middle,
2:53everybody was scrambling to get stuff
2:55open. And I'm like, this is not really
2:58too productive. So, by putting everybody
3:00on one side of the line and having the
3:03material come from the opposite, we
3:05think we're going to get a smoother
3:07flow. Yes. Let's go for it. Now, I don't
3:10I don't I don't care if I leave work
3:11late. I don't I don't care.
3:18[Music]
3:22You know, I don't want you to have to
3:23walk 15 ft to go get those two cans of
3:26corn. I want those cans of corn to be
3:28readily available to you in the right
3:30quantity at the right place at the right
3:31time so that you can pack it in the box.
3:38[Music]
3:41Wow, this looks a lot different, doesn't
3:42it? That's cool. Yeah.
3:46Does anybody remember how long it was
3:47taking us to pack one box when we first
3:49started? 3 minutes. 3 minutes. That's
3:51exactly right. It was around 3 minutes.
3:533 minutes for a box. What do you think
3:55we were packing one box? How long and
3:57how many seconds today
3:59[Music]
4:02about 11 seconds.
4:06[Music]
4:11Kaizen is a Japanese word for continuous
4:13improvement.
4:15And what this philosophy means is we
4:18always want to strive step by step to
4:20make a process better.
4:24Outside Toyota problem can sometimes
4:26have a negative connotation like a bad
4:28thing.
4:30I find that in many cases it's better to
4:32say we have something that we can
4:34improve. Sweet.
4:36[Music]
4:45Faster. Way faster. Yeah. Yeah. Much
4:47much better.
4:50[Music]
4:54Very good. You got plenty of homework.
4:55Yeah, plenty of homework. Uh the list is
4:58a lot shorter than it was when we
4:59started.
5:01How long did you guys wait? Uh we wait
5:03we waited for like about a minute.
5:05That's it. Yeah, that's nothing. I know.
5:12Unfortunately, we had sand. But there'll
5:14be other cases where this needs to be
5:15done. And hopefully you've learned some
5:17of the basic principles so you can set
5:19something up from the beginning. One
5:21thing I did learn from these guys is uh
5:22how to structure things uh one by one,
5:25you know, not just take it as a whole
5:27thing and just be like it's a mess, but
5:29instead I can take step by step by step.
5:39[Music]
5:49All right.
