0:00World War I
0:01Well, that was pretty bad.
0:02But World War II, it's the reason we know how the world ends today.
0:07But I'm not going to tell you what happens in World War II.
0:09We just covered the First World War. Give me a break, man.
0:12Come on, let's touch some grass.
0:22[OOH IT HAPPENINGS ] [right?...]
0:22Pssst- Hey kid
0:24this painting is called The March on Rome.
0:27by the most-priced museum exhibit because this is where the story of World War II begins.
0:33Take a closer look.
0:34come on don't be shy!
0:41[me when a random strnager tells me to get closer to him- whats the worst that could happen?-]
0:44*evil laugh track plays* Bye-bye.
0:46Historically facts part 18.
Italy's Road
0:53NUMBER 20 COMING UP OOOO [WEEEEEEE]
0:53Oh my god. Are you okay?
0:54My name is Italian Jojo Oliver.
0:57What's your name?
1:00[oh I'm so glad you asked its actually-] What a nice name.
1:01Anyway, bad time to jump out of a painting, buddy.
1:04Things ain't how they used to be around here in 1922.
1:07Let me explain.
1:08Turns out the Great War really wasn't that great.
1:11And specifically, Italy after the First World War was in a rough shape.
1:16They joined the First World War because
1:17they were promised all these juicy lands if they did so.
1:20But turns out Britain and France kind of lied to us Italians.
1:23At the Treaty of Versailles, the agreement that ended the war
1:27we only received a teeny tiny amount of what was promised to us
1:30which made the winners, not at all, feel like winners.
1:33Some of the local Marios wrote it off as a minor nuisance.
1:37But the Luigi's, those Italian nationalists, took the betrayal to heart
1:41and felt humiliated by the entente powers to the point they called their victory in World War I
1:46Victoria Mutila.
1:48A mutilated victory.
1:50Might sound a bit extreme or childish, but it kind of made sense that they were this butt hurt-
1:56They sank their whole economy, all their men and trade into the first
2:00world war effort because they thought they would be heavily rewarded for it.
2:04But when they didn't get all of that land, all they were left with was hyperinflation
2:08a whole lot of debt, and a couple of dead husbands.
2:12By the way, get off the floor, man. Look around you, Amico Mio.
2:15Unemployment, political instability, factories occupied by unions.
2:19Things around here are going heavily downhill.
2:22And I guess what's going to happen any second now is the reason that
2:25magical painting brought you to specifically 1922.
2:29Even though the big war is not going to happen for another 17 years.
2:34See that fat guy?
2:36No, no, the one without the hat.
2:38That is Bonito Mussolini.
2:40Once a socialist and anti-war guy during the First World War
2:44he felt the war was actually necessary so Italy could become stronger.
2:48So he became a pro-war guy, which was highly unpopular among the socialists.
2:53So he got thrown out of the group.
2:54That's it.
2:55I'm starting my own thing.
2:57And he did.
2:58It's called fascism, a word your modern politics seems loaded with,
3:02yet most people don't even know what it truly is.

4:34Who knows, it might just become your next favorite game.
4:37So, what is fascism really?
4:39It's a political ideology built around one main idea.
4:42The nation comes before everything.
4:44Before your political party, before your personal freedoms,
4:47before your opinions, and before even yourself.
4:51According to fascism, people fighting each other over class,
4:54wealth, or politics only makes the country weaker.
4:57In fact, Mussolini thought Italy had become weak
5:00because everybody was too busy arguing and protesting
5:03instead of working together for the nation.
5:05So, his solution was basically, stop fighting each other.
5:08We are all Italians.
5:09Now, on paper, fascism sounds kind of wholesome.
5:13But there is one teeny tiny little problem.
5:16Who actually decides what's best for the nation?
5:19Yeah, this guy.
5:21Fascists believed democracy was weak because politicians
5:25spent too much time debating things instead of actually doing things.
5:28There were too many elections, too many parties, and too many old dudes yelling in parliament.
5:33Instead, fascism believed the country needed one
5:35strong leader who could just take control and fix everything quickly.
5:39So far, fascism doesn't seem too bad.
5:42If anything, it seems like calling someone a fascist might actually be a compliment
5:46but that's because you're not looking at the fine print because this all so far seems somewhat fine
5:52until it turns out your leader is actually insane. Now,
5:55remember those factory occupations and communist movements I mentioned earlier?
5:59A lot of Italians were terrified of communism at the time, like genuinely terrified.
6:05Russia had already gone communist a few years earlier,
6:08and many rich people thought Italy was next.
6:11So when Mussolini showed up, saying things like,
6:14"I will restore order, stop the communists, and make Italy great again."
6:18A lot of people started supporting him
6:21especially rich businessmen, nationalists, war veterans,
6:24and people who were just tired of all the chaos.
6:28And this is where fascism starts to show its cracks.
6:31See, when Mussolini said,
6:32"Let's all unite for the nation."
6:34That sounded nice. But what if somebody disagrees?
6:38What if somebody says
6:39"Actually, I don't think uniting under one guy is
6:42a good idea because if that Guy's ill intended, we are all screwed."
6:47Well, according to fascism, that thought train is problematic.
6:51The nation is supposed to be united after all.
6:54So under fascism, people who disagree start looking less
6:57like political opponents and more like enemies.
7:00Pretty quickly, Mussolini's idea of national unity starts looking
7:04a lot less like wholesome teamwork and a lot more like agree with me or else.
7:10And the else are the blackshirts.
7:12They were Mussolini's elite group who attacked socialist newspapers
7:17broke up strikes, and intimidated Mussolini's opponents.
7:20And the Italian government was so weak at this point that nobody really stopped those bullies.
7:25Which brings us to October 1922, the March on Rome. Thousands of
7:31the Blackshirts gathered and marched together towards Rome.
7:34Not to take over just yet.
7:36It was mainly a show of force to intimidate the government, which they really did.
7:41The liberal Italian government panicked and wanted to call in
7:43the army to show they were even stronger than the fascist army.
7:47All they needed to issue the order was for
7:49the Italian king to approve the military action, but he didn't.
7:53At that point, the government collapsed. The king wanted to avoid bloodshed
7:57so he called forth Mussolini to appoint him as the prime minister, which actually took a while
8:02since Mousolini didn't even participate in the march.
8:05Yeah, he was chilling in Milan, kind of just eyeing where things ended up going.
8:09So, he hurried over, took the title, and fascism became a very real national ideology.
8:14Over the next decade, Mussolini concentrated more and more power.
8:18He came to rule Italy as its unquestioned dictator and styled himself Il Duce
8:23aka the leader.
8:24He also changed the world map a little bit as he officially made
8:27Vatican City a country and gave them tons of money in return for Catholic support.
8:32So, hey, that's a fun fascist fact.
8:34And he also conquered Ethiopia, which was essentially poor people
8:37with swords and a few guns versus 800 tanks, airplanes
8:41and 330 tons of horrific mustard gas that killed armies, civilians, and water supplies.
8:47A completely one-sided battle for sure, but to the Italian nationalists,
8:51absolute proof that fascism was definitely going to work out.
8:55The Italians also decided to occupy Albania to control the entrance to the Adriatic Sea.
9:00Now, not to be that kind of guy, but since I am here with a white shirt and you are
9:05completely white, it's probably time for you to go before we start this short race war.
9:10Oh, but before you go, here a sticker of approval.
9:12May the Italian Jojo gods be with you.
9:15Bye, my friend.
9:22[is that a jojo ref-]
9:22[actually never mind this whole part of the video was a jojo reference-]
9:22[if oliver is jojo would waldo be dio ?] Hello again. Did you like my painting?
9:26[dio waldo when?] Yeah, they always react like that.
9:28World War II still hasn't happened.
9:30In fact, we are only in 1922. So, why did I push you all the way into fascist Italy?
9:36Well, because history is kind of like a domino chain.
9:39And Mussolini he's one of the first dominoes
9:42but he is not the biggest one.
9:45watch your hat!
German's Road
9:47[NOOO]
9:48Dund.
9:49Well, this is awkward.
9:51My name is Bear Oliver.
9:53And let me guess, the Italian guy already explained fascism. Perfect.
9:58That saves me like five pages of dialogue.
10:00Anyway, Germany was basically having the same problem as Italy.
10:03But instead of being winners that felt like losers
10:06they were losers that felt like ultra losers.
10:09Unlike Italy, Germany wasn't upset because they didn't get enough.
10:13They were upset because they got stuck with the biggest bill imaginable.
10:17Roughly 5 to10 trillion in today's money.
10:20On top of that, they lost these territories, had to demilitarize the Rhineland
10:24reduce their army to just 100,000 men.
10:27weren't even allowed to have an air force and were forced to watch our
10:30Deltton Heist video three times per day as punishment for being a bad boy.
10:34Needless to say, the Germans were not having a wunderbar time.
10:38Suddenly, a lot of Germans started looking for somebody to blame.
10:42See that angry guy over there? That is Adolf Hitler,
10:45a failed artist and Europe's next big headache.
10:48He fought in World War I.
10:50Somewhat was a surprisingly brave soldier running as a trans messenger,
10:54which earned him two medals and two injuries.
10:57When he was laying blindfolded in bed recovering from his second injury sustained from mustard gas
11:02he finally heard the news. Germany had surrendered.
11:05Hitler was absolutely devastated and furious.
11:08Like many radical German soldiers,
11:10he refused to believe the German military had actually lost on the battlefield.
11:14So he started to give speeches about it. Lots of speeches.
11:18He joined a small political party, took it over,
11:21and transformed it into the National Socialist German Workers Party
11:24or as normal people call it, the Nazi party.
11:28No, they weren't actually socialists.
11:30Despite the name, the Nazis hated socialism,
11:33hated communism, and spent a lot of their time beating up socialists.
11:37Now, before you think Hitler was just a German Mussolini,
11:40he kind of was, but with one very important difference.
11:45While Mussolini mostly cared about the nation, Hitler cared about the nation and race.
11:51He became obsessed with the idea that Germany's problems weren't
11:54just caused by bad politicians, but by entire groups of people
11:58especially Jews.
12:00This is probably the fascism people mean when
12:02they call you a fascist for disliking the color purple.
12:06Anyway, while Hitler was busy giving speeches,
12:08which he was extremely good at, Germany was busy falling apart.
12:12So Hitler looked over to his neighbors down below and decided to copy their homework.
12:17He gathered a bunch of supporters, marched into a beer hall, which is probably why we are here,
12:22and tried to overthrow the German government while downing some Jäger Meister.
12:25Unsurprisingly, it failed and he got thrown into prison and this party got banned.
12:30But then 1929 happened.
12:32The Great Depression hit everyone, but Germany got hit the hardest.
12:37Suddenly the guy over there screaming angrily at the local Jews didn't seem so crazy.
12:42People lost everything due to the economic chaos.
12:45And in desperate times like these, Hitler stopped sounding crazy to a lot of desperate Germans.
12:50As Germany's economy got worse, Hitler's popularity got better.
12:54And in 1933, he finally gathered enough support to become the chancellor of Germany.
12:59And he instantly did all the stuff that Mousolini did.
13:02He bent opposition power, made the place a dictatorship, and named himself the German
13:06version of Il Duce Führer.
13:09Now, remember that giant list of things Germany wasn't allowed to do after World War I?
13:14Hitler looked at that list and basically treated it as a checklist.
13:18No army, let's build one.
13:20No air force, let's build one.
13:22Stay out of the rhinland, let's build one.
13:24I mean, let's just put soldiers there just for good measures.
13:27France and Britain saw what Hitler was doing and did exactly nothing about it.
13:32Yeah, shocker, right? That lack of response made Hitler cocky.
13:36If he can put troops in the Rhineland and not get punished for it,
13:40why can't he also put troops in, let's say, Austria, reuniting the German people
13:45that was a big no no for the entente powers.
13:48So they ultimately decided to give Hitler a very firm talk.
13:53They told him what he was doing was uncalled for.
13:56So Hitler sincerely apologized, promised to never do it again.
14:00And Chamberlain's appeasement policy saved the world from a second world war.
14:04Daddy, I want Czechoslovakia. Damn it.
14:08After annexing Austria, Hitler set his sights on Czechoslovakia.
14:11There was a large German minority inside the
14:14country and Hitler demanded that they should unite with Germany.
14:17However, this territory,
14:19the Sudetenland,
14:20was also vital for Czechoslovakia's defenses.
14:24Hitler and Mussolini met with Chamberlain and the French Prime Minister Daladier
14:28and concluded that Hitler may take those territories if he promises
14:31to leave the rest of Czechoslovakia alone.
14:33Hitler, being a very trustworthy guy
14:36promised to definitely not maybe perhaps take it.
14:39Czechoslovakia suddenly lost all their defenses to
14:42the Germans without having anything to say about it.
14:44And Chamberlain's appeasement policy saved the world.
14:46Daddy, I ate Czechoslovakia.
14:49Damn it. Okay, listen up you little shit.
14:51If you take one more piece of land, me and France are definitely going to
14:54perhaps maybe supposedly declare war on you and World War II will start.
14:59I'm hungry.
15:00[ big chungus Oliver?]
15:02By 1939, war loomed all over Europe. In fact, you could argue it had already started.
15:07Not in Germany, not in Poland, but in Spain.
15:11A failed military coupe in 1936 had spiraled into
15:14a brutal civil war between the nationalists and republicans.
15:18And before anyone knew it, half of Europe had picked a side.
15:22Germany and Italy backed to nationalists
15:24the Soviet Union back to Republicans.
15:26Though the Germans and Soviets were actively trying to kill each other in southern Europe.
15:30Meanwhile, back at home, the two nations signed the Molotov Ribbon Tropact
15:34which established a 10-year no attacking each other pact between the two countries.
15:38Secretly, it also included a segment that divided the entirety of Eastern
15:42Europe from Finland to Romania between the two states in case
15:46you know
15:47they decided to take that for some reason.
15:50Daddy, I want Poland.
15:52Oh, for the love of-
15:55okay- mine point. Got to stop you there.
15:56First of all, I am way over the legal limit of what you should be allowed to drink.
16:01So, take the sticker of being a certified drinking pal.
16:03And secondly, there is one more country that made up the axis force strife, you know.
16:07Okay, so basically what happened was
16:10[and he's dead-]
16:12[guess will never know-]
16:14Well, that was disappointing.
16:16If that wasn't a cliffhanger, I don't know what to tell you.
16:19I personally would never cliffhanger you because, you know, I have morals.
16:23Anyway, look at that beautiful painting.
16:25It's small, I know, but not each painting story has to be big.
16:28I mean, check it out yourself.
16:30Oops.
Japan's Road
16:35Oh, hey, Doodly Chan.
16:36My name is Oliver San.
16:38My favorite anime is One Piece and welcome aboard the Mukden Express.
16:42I'm now going to talk normal.
16:43I know you were deep into 1939, but let's rewind a bit to 1931.
16:48Unlike Germany, Japan wasn't angry because of the precise treatment.
16:52And unlike Italy, Japan wasn't trying to recreate the Roman Empire.
16:56Japan had a different problem. The country was rapidly industrializing,
17:00building factories, ships, and an enormous military
17:04but realized rather late that they did not have the resources to feed any of it.
17:08So, naturally, they resourced it from their neighbors by invading them.
17:15Yeah, that idea was surprisingly popular at the time.
17:18Now, before you invade somebody, it's generally considered polite to have an excuse.
17:23Fortunately, the Japanese military happened to find one.
17:26Or more accurately, they made one.
17:29Uh-oh.
17:30Guess that's their excuse.
17:31Looks like somebody blew up the railway, though it was most likely the Japanese themselves.
17:36Japan, though, accused the Chinese and then threw their army at them.
17:39Nevertheless, Japan used the incident as an excuse to invade Manuria,
17:43which was a large chunk of northeastern China
17:46and to say it softly took over the place.
17:48The Japanese, however, wanted to expand more.
17:50So, after another convenient incident at the Marco Polo Bridge,
17:54the Japanese launched a second invasion against China
17:57where they captured the biggest Chinese cities and shortly after the capital at the time, Nan King
18:02where they did such horrible things to the Chinese that if I would explain them in detail
18:06the YouTube senpie would instantly ban our channel.
18:09And uh yeah, Doodly Chan, that's about all you need to know before the Second World War starts.
18:14Sorry about the bumpy train, right?
18:16I really like One Piece, by the way.
18:18Take this sticker.
18:19And I got to tell you what happens in chapter 4,92. So basically,
18:23Luffy gets really strong and then he kills all the enemies.
World War 2
18:26Hey. Hey.
18:26And with that, you are finally ready, my friend.
18:29World War II.
18:31The video is finally happening.
18:33I I I can't believe it, guys
18:34. We waited so long for this moment. All right.
18:37So, all you have to do now is jump in this painting in the middle of your screen.
18:40You can click it and it will take you straight to the beginning of the war.
18:43Unless it's not there, of course.
18:45Does that mean I promise to not leave you on a cliffhanger? Yet, I did.
18:49Well, if the worst person in history is allowed to lie
18:52surely the second worst person in history is allowed to lie, too.
18:55Hey, see you soon, my friend
