0:00Greetings from the University for Peace

0:02in Costa Rica. I'm Tossui Hin,

0:05distinguished professor at Peace. I've

0:08been extensively involved in the

0:10development of peace education programs

0:12worldwide since the

0:1570s. This short film is to welcome

0:18prospective applicants to the online

0:20distance education program course in

0:22peace education theory and practice. Now

0:26it is well known that the building of a

0:28peaceful world encompasses many complex

0:31problems and challenges.

0:34Many sectors and dimensions have to be

0:36considered political, economic, social,

0:40cultural and environmental. And multiple

0:43stakeholders need to be involved

0:45including individuals, communities,

0:48institutions,

0:50organizations as well as governments,

0:53intergovernmental agencies and

0:55non-governmental organizations or NOS

0:58and civil society organizations.

1:02However, based on practices and lessons

1:04learned globally, it is widely

1:07acknowledged that education plays an

1:09indispensable role in peace building. In

1:12other words, peace education is one of

1:15the foundation stones for building a

1:17culture of peace in all levels of life.

1:21This online course in peace education

1:23theory and practice seeks to provide a

1:26basic introduction to the visions,

1:29goals, purposes and strategies of peace

1:33education programs in diverse

1:35regions. We will initially explore the

1:39root causes of diverse conflicts and

1:42examine strategies for the nonviolent

1:44resolution and transformation of those

1:47conflicts. We will then look into the

1:50role of critical educational strategies

1:52and pedagogies for resolving those

1:55conflicts at all levels of

1:57life. More specifically, the course will

2:00cover several themes in education for

2:03building a culture of peace. Namely,

2:06education for dismantling a culture of

2:08war, education for living with justice

2:11and compassion, education for promoting

2:14human rights and

2:16responsibilities, education for

2:18intercultural understanding, respect and

2:21solidarity, education for living in

2:24harmony with the earth, and last but not

2:26least, education for nurturing inner

2:29peace. I would also like to mention that

2:32the course will be inviting Dr. Virginia

2:35Kawagas the resident professor in peace

2:37education at up peace to give a number

2:40of guest lectures and

2:42presentations Dr. Kawagas has extensive

2:44experiences as a peace educator in both

2:47global north and south context and hence

2:51will be an invaluable resource person. I

2:54look forward to welcoming educators who

2:56are interested in developing your

2:59capacities as peace educators to this

3:02online course in the theory and practice

3:04of peace education. Your visions, your

3:08goals, insights, and your experiences

3:10will be most appreciated. Thank you.
