0:00Hi! Welcome to a new video. Today, I'm in my kitchen and we're
0:09going to cook together in French. We're going to make moussaka. Moussaka
0:18is a Greek dish, a dish that comes from Greece.
0:24If you're new to the channel, my name is Elsa, I'm French, and on Piece of French,
0:32I help you learn French. A bit like having a friend help you learn French.
0:41If you'd like, I've created a free quiz that allows you to assess your French level
0:50and receive personalized advice. I'll leave the link in the description. And let's get started,
0:58let's begin cooking. Before we start cooking, I'm going to put on an apron.
1:18I wear an apron so I don't get dirty, so I don't get my clothes dirty, so I don't get
1:27stains on my clothes. This apron is from Peru in South America.
1:37My parents brought it back for me from a trip to Peru. It's a souvenir. Okay,
1:44let's start cooking. I've prepared all the ingredients here to make moussaka.
1:53Normally, moussaka is a dish made with meat, usually beef. But
2:01today, we're going to make a vegetarian version. I'll start by peeling the potatoes.
2:11Moussaka has potatoes in it. I'm peeling the potatoes with a vegetable
2:29peeler. I'm putting the peelings in a bowl,
2:39and then we'll put them in the compost, not the regular trash, but the compost bin. I've
2:51already made this moussaka recipe. It's a recipe that Chat GPT gave me. I like
3:02using Chat GPT to create recipes. I tell Chat GPT the ingredients I have at home
3:15and ask it to create a recipe for me. For example, I told it,
3:21"I want to make moussaka." Here are the ingredients I have, "How do I make
3:29moussaka?" And I find it very practical to do it this way. So I do it regularly.
3:40I use Chat GPT to create recipes. For this recipe, I'm using six potatoes.
3:50I have six potatoes in my hands. Wait, I've peeled two potatoes
4:06and I'm going to peel the others.
4:14Normally, for the traditional moussaka recipe, you use eggplant. But
4:24I went to the supermarket yesterday and there were no eggplants. So instead of eggplants,
4:34I bought zucchini, and I hope it will be good with zucchini. I think
4:45it will. As I was saying, I've already made this recipe with eggplant,
4:51and it was very good. So I hope it will be good with zucchini too.
5:03Next, I cut the potatoes with a knife. I cut the potatoes into
5:13slices. I cut the potatoes into slices. You see, they're round.
5:22So, we call that a slice. I slice the potatoes.
5:36It's not always easy to think of new recipe ideas.
5:45We often eat the same thing every week. So, I'm always trying to find new ideas,
5:54to try new recipes, but it's not always easy to find inspiration. So,
6:01I'd love for you to tell me in the comments what recipe you like
6:08to make? What recipe do you make regularly every week? Are there any
6:15recipes you make often? Maybe it will give me some recipe ideas
6:24because it's true that I often make pretty much the same thing, even though this
6:32moussaka recipe is fairly recent. It's the second time I've made it.
6:42So, please tell me your favorite recipes in the comments, and if possible, simple recipes
6:50that don't take too much time to make, that would be great. So, I
6:59slice the potatoes and put them on a baking sheet.
7:09I put the potatoes on a baking sheet, which I'll then put in the
7:17oven because I'm going to cook the vegetables in the oven first. In fact,
7:25I'm going to turn on the oven to preheat it. I'm turning on the oven.
7:45I'm not going to peel the zucchini. I'm not peeling the zucchini. I'm
7:52not peeling the zucchini. I'm going to rinse them. I'm rinsing them under running water,
8:11and then I'm going to cut the zucchini. I'm not going to slice the zucchini.
8:23I'm not going to slice them; I'm going to cut them lengthwise like this.
8:42Today is Sunday. It's Sunday, and as I was saying in my video about my
8:51Sunday routine, on Sundays I like to cook for the week. I try to cook in large quantities
9:01so I have enough to eat for several days. So, with this moussaka, I think it'll be good
9:09for two or three days, to eat for lunch with a salad. I like to prepare this kind of
9:21large dish that allows me to have enough food for several days. It's practical. That way,
9:32on the days I work, I don't have to stop working to cook.
9:38I have lunch already prepared. So, I try to do this on the weekend, or
9:48in the evening during the week, I prepare food. Each time, I prepare enough for several days.
10:04I put olive oil on the vegetables
10:12and salt.
10:19And I put the vegetables in the oven.
10:36I look at the recipe.
10:39Now, I'm going to prepare the tomato sauce with the "meat"—in quotes—because, as I
10:49told you, I'm going to make a vegetarian version without meat. And instead of meat,
10:57I'm going to use soy protein. I use dehydrated soy protein. I like the
11:09result. I think it's good. It resembles meat. It's not meat, but it
11:16resembles meat. For the tomato sauce, you have to start by chopping an onion and some garlic.
11:33Two cloves of garlic. For the onion, I have a technique to avoid crying when
11:43I chop an onion; it's very simple. I don't breathe through my nose. Breathe.
11:52I don't breathe through my nose, I only breathe through my mouth when I'm chopping an
11:59onion. And I assure you, try it, it works. You won't cry,
12:05you won't shed a tear when you chop the onion, but you mustn't
12:13breathe through your nose. So it's a little difficult to talk. It's a little difficult to talk at the
12:21same time. So I'm going to chop the onion and then we'll talk, then we'll chat.
12:57I've finished chopping the onion and you see, I'm not crying. I don't
13:03have any tears. So it works. I'm going to put the onion on the stove in a pan.
13:34I'll add the garlic.
13:40I'll stir.
13:46Then I'll add the tomatoes. I'll leave you
13:56the recipe with all the ingredients and quantities in the description of the video. If you want
14:06to make this recipe at home.
14:41I also add spices, paprika
14:52and oregano,
14:58and a little bit of cinnamon.
15:11And I stir.
15:20Next, I add the dehydrated soy protein
15:28and some water to rehydrate it.
15:49I also add salt. Salt and pepper.
16:12While the tomato sauce is cooking, I'm going to—oh wait...
16:25sorry, I sneezed. I think it's because of the pepper.
16:31I sneezed, and in French, when someone sneezes, we say "à tes souhaits," "à tes souhaits."
16:42So, as I was saying, while the tomato sauce is cooking, I'm going to prepare the béchamel sauce.
16:52For the béchamel sauce, I need butter, milk, and flour. For the béchamel sauce,
17:05I need 50g of butter. I use a scale to weigh the butter.
17:28I melt the butter in a saucepan.
17:38I melt the butter.
17:45I need 50g of flour.
18:07Okay.
18:13The butter has melted, and I add the flour and mix it in.
18:37And then, I gradually add the milk. I'm adding between 400 and 500 ml of milk. I have a
18:52measuring cup. I'll start with 400 ml of milk. 400. I'm starting with 400 ml.
19:10OK, 400 ml of milk. It's not easy to do everything at once. I have to mix the sauce,
19:26prepare the béchamel sauce. So I'm going to turn on the heat. Now, I
19:36have to add the milk gradually while whisking. So I'm turning on the heat to low.
19:45Where's the whisk? There, I have a whisk. I'll take the whisk and gradually add the milk, whisking constantly.
20:27Everything's ready. The vegetables, the tomato sauce, and the béchamel sauce. Now
20:34I need to assemble it all in a dish. I'll take an ovenproof dish and
20:43layer it. I'll start with a layer of potatoes.
20:51On top of that, I'll add zucchini, tomato sauce, potatoes, zucchini,
20:58tomato sauce, and I'll finish with a layer of béchamel sauce and some grated cheese.
22:02I'll put the moussaka in the oven for 40 minutes.
22:18The moussaka is in the oven, and now all I have to do is clean
22:27the kitchen. That's always the less fun part, but I'll listen to a
22:37podcast and tidy the kitchen while the moussaka bakes.
24:28The kitchen is clean. I've started the dishwasher. If you hear any noise, that's
24:35the dishwasher. I also washed the dishes by hand. I washed the pots and pans,
24:44I washed the stovetop. The moussaka is ready. It smells delicious.
24:55We're going to eat it for lunch tomorrow. For this kind of dish, like moussaka, I find
25:04it tastes better the next day. So that's a little tip. If you can, prepare the recipe
25:11a day in advance, and you'll see, it's even better the next day. That's all for this video. I hope
25:20you enjoyed it. You'll find the recipe in the description box if you want to make it.
25:29If you liked this video, I think you'll love my new French Foundations course.
25:36In this course, I present my method for learning French naturally and
25:44effectively. And most importantly, we put the method into practice with videos like this one,
25:51videos about my daily life. I'm going to tell you about my family, give you a tour of my house,
25:58show you a day in my life, a day in my life, and we'll cook together. So in
26:05this course, you'll find lots of exclusive videos to practice your French at a fairly
26:13beginner level, like this one. I'll leave all the information about the course in the
26:19description box. I hope you enjoyed the video. If you'd like to see another video, I recommend
26:26this one where we do an everyday activity together in
26:33simple, slow French. I'll leave that here and see you very soon for a new video. Kisses.
