0:00The decree was signed. [music] The ink
0:02was dry. The date was set. In exactly 11
0:06months, an entire nation of people would
0:09be erased from the earth. Men, women,
0:12children. It was not a threat. It was a
0:16law. And in the ancient Persian empire,
0:19a law signed by the king could never be
0:21reversed.
0:22>> [music]
0:23>> The streets of Susa filled with weeping.
0:26Ashes were thrown into the air.
0:29A heavy suffocating shadow of death fell
0:32over [music] the Jewish people. The most
0:34powerful empire in the world had just
0:37declared [music] them enemies, and there
0:40was nowhere to run. But the man who
0:43signed the death warrant, King Xerxes,
0:46the ruler of 127
0:49provinces,
0:51did not know one crucial detail. He did
0:54not know that the woman sleeping beside
0:56him,
0:57the woman wearing his royal crown,
1:00the woman he loved above all others,
1:03was one of the very people he had just
1:06condemned to die.
1:09Her real name was Hadassah,
1:12but the world knew her as Esther.
1:14And in a matter of days, she would have
1:17to make a choice.
1:19Keep her mouth shut, protect [music] her
1:21royal status, and watch her people burn.
1:24Or walk into the throne room uninvited,
1:28a crime punishable by instant execution.
1:32Most people crumble under [music] the
1:33weight of fear.
1:34>> [screaming]
1:35>> Most people react with panic, but Esther
1:37was filled with a different kind of
1:39strength. She was about to deliver a
1:41master class in faith and the
1:45devastating power of perfect divine
1:49timing.
1:50This is the story of the orphan who
1:54became [music]
1:55a queen to save her people.
1:59>> [music]
2:05>> Stories of the olives presents
2:08Esther.
2:11To understand the danger Esther faced,
2:14you must understand the world she lived
2:16in.
2:18The Persian empire stretched farther
2:20than the eye could imagine.
2:22From India to Cush, King Xerxes ruled
2:26over 127 provinces with absolute power.
2:30His word could raise cities or erase
2:33lives. And inside his palace, everything
2:36glittered with excess.
2:38Golden goblets, ivory pillars, silk
2:41curtains, perfume drifting through halls
2:43of polished stone.
2:45>> [music]
2:45>> The king loved power. He loved
2:48admiration, and he loved being obeyed.
2:54>> [applause]
2:54[music]
2:55>> One night, during a feast that lasted
2:57for days, he called for Queen Vashti to
3:00appear before his guests so they could
3:02admire her beauty. But Vashti refused.
3:06No one expected a queen to say no to the
3:09king.
3:10The room fell silent. The king's pride
3:14shattered in front of his officials, and
3:17anger burned through him like fire.
3:20Advisors warned him that if words spread
3:23about Vashti's defiance, women
3:25throughout the empire might begin
3:27resisting their husbands, too.
3:29So, the king made a decision.
3:32Queen Vashti would never stand before
3:35him again.
3:36And suddenly, the throne beside the king
3:39sat empty.
3:41The message to the empire was clear.
3:44No one defies the king. No one
3:47challenges his authority.
3:49Months passed.
3:51>> [music]
3:51>> Then came the decree.
3:53Beautiful young women from across the
3:55empire were to be gathered and brought
3:57[music] into the royal palace.
3:59The king would choose a new queen. They
4:02were locked behind massive stone walls,
4:05given 12 months of beauty treatments,
4:07oils, perfumes, spices. They were
4:11trained to walk, trained to speak,
4:14trained to please. It was a world of
4:17fierce competition. [music]
4:19Hundreds of women all fighting for a
4:21single crown. They demanded the finest
4:24clothes, the best jewelry, the loudest
4:27attention.
4:28But among them was an orphan girl, a
4:31Jewish girl raised by her older cousin,
4:34Mordecai. She had no royal blood, no
4:38political connections, [music]
4:39no worldly wealth.
4:42When she was taken into the palace,
4:44Mordecai gave her one strict command. Do
4:47not reveal your [music] people.
4:49Do not reveal your family.
4:51Keep your identity a secret. And Esther
4:54[music] listened.
4:56While the other women gossiped, while
4:58they plotted,
5:00while they desperately sought attention,
5:03Esther remained [music] quiet.
5:05She observed. She carried a quiet
5:08wisdom.
5:09She trusted the process without letting
5:11the palace change who she was.
5:14When it was finally her turn to go
5:16before the king, the other women
5:18requested lavish jewels and garments to
5:21impress him.
5:22But Esther asked for nothing.
5:25She took only what Hegai, the king's
5:27eunuch, advised. She did not
5:29overperform. She did not boast. She
5:33moved with a quiet, undeniable grace.
5:37And when King Xerxes saw her,
5:39the noise of the palace faded. He was
5:41captivated, not just by her beauty, but
5:44by the peace she carried. In a world
5:47full of loud, desperate people, [music]
5:50her quiet dignity stood out. He placed
5:53the royal crown on her head.
5:56The orphan became the queen.
5:59But her secret remained hidden, and
6:01Mordecai remained nearby.
6:05Every day he walked near the palace
6:08gates, hoping to hear news of her,
6:10hoping she was safe.
6:12One day, while sitting near the gate,
6:14Mordecai overheard two guards plotting
6:17to assassinate the king. Quietly, he
6:19sent word to Esther.
6:21Esther warned the king.
6:23The plot was uncovered. The traitors
6:26were executed. And Mordecai's act was
6:29recorded [music] in the royal records.
6:32But strangely, nothing else happened.
6:35No reward.
6:37No recognition.
6:39No honor.
6:42He simply returned to his post at the
6:44gate, waiting on the Lord.
6:48Power always attracts corruption.
6:51And in the court of Xerxes, the darkest
6:54heart belonged to a man named Haman.
6:57Haman was wealthy. He was manipulative.
7:01And he was dangerously ambitious.
7:04The king promoted Haman above all the
7:07other nobles.
7:08He was given a seat of honor. He was
7:11given ultimate authority. And with that
7:14authority, came a command. [music]
7:16Whenever Haman walked through the city
7:18gates,
7:19every official, every servant, every
7:22citizen must kneel, must bow down to the
7:25ground.
7:27Haman fed on this. His pride demanded
7:30it. He did not just want power. He
7:33wanted worship.
7:35As he walked through the gates of Susa,
7:37a wave of bodies fell to the dirt before
7:40him, except [music] for one,
7:42Mordecai.
7:44He watched Haman approach. He saw the
7:47officials drop to their knees,
7:48>> [music]
7:49>> but Mordecai remained seated.
7:52Haman demanded an explanation.
7:54>> [music]
7:55>> The guards demanded compliance, but
7:58Mordecai refused.
8:00He was a Jew.
8:02He bowed to no man, only to God.
8:07For a prideful, wicked man like Haman,
8:10defiance is not just an insult. It is an
8:13injury.
8:15It drove him mad.
8:17All of his wealth, all of his power,
8:20all of his titles meant nothing as long
8:24as one man refused to bow.
8:27But Haman did not just want to kill
8:29Mordecai.
8:30That [music] was too small.
8:32He wanted to destroy everything Mordecai
8:34loved. He wanted to wipe God's chosen
8:37people from the face of the earth.
8:40Haman went to King Xerxes. He used the
8:43oldest trick in politics, fear.
8:46"There is a certain people scattered
8:49among your provinces," Haman whispered.
8:52"Their laws are different. They do not
8:55obey the king's laws. It is not in your
8:58best interest to tolerate them."
9:01Haman offered to pay 10,000 talents of
9:04silver into the royal treasury to have
9:07them destroyed.
9:09Xerxes, distracted and trusting, did not
9:12ask questions.
9:13He took his signet ring. He handed it to
9:16Haman.
9:17"Do with the people as you please."
9:21The decree was written. The dice were
9:24cast.
9:25On the 13th day of the 12th month, every
9:28Jew in the empire was to be slaughtered.
9:32And their enemies could take their
9:34property.
9:36Couriers rode out on fast horses to
9:39deliver the death sentence.
9:42THE TRAP was set.
9:44>> [music]
9:46>> When Mordecai heard the news,
9:48he tore his clothes.
9:50He put on sackcloth and ashes.
9:53He walked into the [music] middle of the
9:54city wailing loudly and bitterly.
9:58He came as far as the king's gate,
10:00>> [music]
10:00>> but he could not enter.
10:02No one clothed in sackcloth was allowed
10:05inside the palace.
10:09Inside the palace walls, Esther lived in
10:11a bubble of luxury. [music]
10:14She was protected. She was comfortable.
10:17She did [music] not know about the
10:18decree,
10:20but she heard about Mordecai.
10:22She sent clothes to him begging him to
10:25take off the sackcloth, to hide his
10:27grief, to blend back in.
10:30But Mordecai refused the clothes. He
10:33sent a copy of the death decree back to
10:35Esther along with a message.
10:38Go to the king.
10:39Beg for mercy.
10:41Plead for [music] your people.
10:43When Esther read the words, cold terror
10:47gripped her chest. She sent a frantic
10:49message back. Everyone knows the law.
10:53Any man or woman who approaches the king
10:56in the inner court without being
10:58summoned will be put to death.
11:01The only exception is if the king
11:03extends the golden scepter,
11:06and the king has not called for me in 30
11:11days.
11:12Esther's fear was completely [music]
11:14justified. It was rational. It was
11:17self-preserving.
11:19If she walked into that room, she would
11:21[music] likely die.
11:23If she stayed quiet, maybe the palace
11:26walls would protect her.
11:28But Mordecai's reply cut through her
11:31excuses like a blade.
11:33It is one of the most profound spiritual
11:35[music] truths ever written.
11:38Do not think that because you are in the
11:40king's house, you alone of all the Jews
11:44will escape.
11:46For if you remain silent at this time,
11:48relief and deliverance will arise from
11:51another place.
11:53But you and your father's family will
11:55perish.
11:57And who knows
11:58but that you have come to your royal
12:00position for such a time as this?
12:04The words hit her heavy,
12:06undeniable.
12:08Mordecai was stripping away her illusion
12:11of safety.
12:12Comfort can be the enemy of calling.
12:15The palace had made her feel safe. The
12:18luxury had made her forget the danger
12:20her people faced. She had a choice.
12:24Cling to a crown that could not save her
12:26soul,
12:27or risk it all for the purpose God had
12:29placed her there for.
12:31The fear did not leave her, but her
12:34faith rose above it.
12:36She sent her final reply to Mordecai.
12:39"Go, gather all the Jews in Susa. Fast
12:42for me.
12:43>> [music]
12:43>> Do not eat or drink for 3 days, night or
12:46day. I and my attendants will fast as
12:49you do. When this is [music] done, I
12:51will go to the king, even though it is
12:53against the law. And if I perish,
12:56I perish."
12:59This was not a statement [music] of
13:01despair. It was a statement of ultimate
13:04surrender to God's will.
13:07>> [music]
13:07>> She had accepted the cost. She had
13:10placed her life in God's hands. And a
13:14person who completely [music] surrenders
13:16to God can no longer be stopped by the
13:20fear of men.
13:23Three days of fasting.
13:25Three days of prayer.
13:27no food, no water, no worldly
13:31distractions. [music]
13:32While the city panicked, Esther sought
13:35heaven. She was preparing her spirit for
13:37the battle ahead.
13:40When the third day arrived, she did not
13:42look like a woman facing execution. She
13:44put on her royal robes. She did not
13:47dress like a beggar asking for pity. She
13:50dressed like a queen walking in her
13:52divine authority.
13:57She walked slowly through the massive
13:59stone corridors [music]
14:01of the palace. Every step echoed. Every
14:05guard watched her.
14:07She reached the entrance [music] of the
14:08inner court.
14:10Across the vast shining floor sat King
14:13Xerxes on his throne. He was deep in
14:16thought.
14:17Esther stepped into the doorway,
14:19uninvited.
14:21The room froze. The silence was
14:24terrifying.
14:25Xerxes looked up. His eyes locked onto
14:29her.
14:30>> [music]
14:32>> The law demanded her death. The protocol
14:35demanded anger.
14:37Esther did not flinch. She did not
14:39speak. She just stood there, calm,
14:43radiant, unshakable. For a second that
14:46felt like an eternity, the king's
14:48expression remained unreadable.
14:51And then,
14:53slowly,
14:54>> [music]
14:54>> he reached out his hand and extended the
14:57golden scepter.
14:59She reached out and gently touched the
15:02tip of the scepter. The king's voice
15:04broke the silence.
15:06>> What is it, Queen Esther? What is your
15:08request?
15:10Even up to half the kingdom, it will be
15:11given to you.
15:12>> Even up to half the kingdom, it [music]
15:15will be given to you.
15:17The king was offering her anything.
15:20She looked at the king.
15:22>> If it pleases the king, let the king
15:25together with Haman come today to a
15:27banquet I have prepared for him.
15:30>> No desperation.
15:31No tears.
15:33Just an invitation to dinner.
15:37Xerxes was intrigued. "Bring Haman at
15:40once." He ordered.
15:47The [music] banquet was flawless. Wine
15:49flowed. The atmosphere was relaxed.
15:53The king [music] looked at Esther again.
15:55"Now, what is your petition? It will be
15:58given to you."
15:59Again,
16:00>> [music]
16:00>> the perfect opportunity. Again, Esther
16:03held back. Her patience was absolute.
16:07Esther smiled gently.
16:09>> If the king regards me with favor,
16:12let the king and Haman come tomorrow to
16:14the banquet I will prepare for them.
16:17Then I will answer the king's question.
16:20>> Haman left the palace [music] that day
16:22walking on air.
16:24He was the only official invited to dine
16:26privately with the king and [music]
16:28queen two days in a row. His pride was
16:32at an all-time high. He felt
16:35untouchable. But as he walked out of the
16:38palace gates, he saw Mordecai. And once
16:41again, Mordecai did not rise. Mordecai
16:45did not tremble. Haman's joy instantly
16:48turned to rage. A proud man cannot enjoy
16:51his feast if one person refuses to bow.
16:55He went home and complained to his wife
16:57and friends.
16:59"I have all this wealth.
17:01I am honored by the queen.
17:03But all of this gives me no satisfaction
17:06as long as I see that Jew sitting at the
17:09gate."
17:10His wife gave him wicked advice.
17:13"Have a gallows built 75 ft high.
17:17Ask the king in the morning to have
17:19Mordecai hanged on it. Then go to the
17:22banquet with joy.
17:24Haman loved the idea. He ordered the
17:27gallows built that very night. He went
17:30to sleep smiling, picturing Mordecai
17:32swinging from the rope. But Haman did
17:35not know that the maker of heaven and
17:39earth was already moving against him.
17:46That night, King Xerxes could not sleep.
17:50He tossed and turned. The palace was
17:53quiet, but his mind was restless.
17:56Frustrated, he ordered a servant to
17:59bring the book of the Chronicles, the
18:01historical records of his reign. He
18:04demanded they be read aloud to pass the
18:07time.
18:09The servant opened the heavy scrolls and
18:11began to read. He read about a time
18:13years ago when two guards plotted to
18:16assassinate the king. And he read how
18:19the plot was uncovered
18:21by a man named Mordecai.
18:24The king sat up in bed.
18:26"What honor and recognition has Mordecai
18:29received for this?" he asked. The
18:31servant checked the records. "Nothing
18:34has been done for him."
18:36Just at that moment, footsteps echoed in
18:39the outer court. It was Haman.
18:42He had come early to ask the king for
18:45permission to hang Mordecai.
18:49Haman entered, practically shaking with
18:52excitement. Before Haman could speak,
18:55the king asked him a question.
18:57"Haman, what should be done for the man
19:00the king delights to honor?"
19:03Haman's arrogance blinded him instantly.
19:06He thought to himself, "Who would the
19:09king delight to honor more than me?"
19:12Haman smiled. He dreamed up the ultimate
19:15reward
19:16for the man the king delights to honor.
19:20Have them bring a royal robe the king
19:23has worn and a horse the king has
19:26ridden.
19:27Let one of the king's most noble princes
19:29put the robe on the man. Let them lead
19:31him on the horse through the city
19:33streets proclaiming before him, "This is
19:36what is done for the man the king
19:39delights to honor."
19:42The king nodded. He loved it.
19:45"Go at once," the king commanded. "Get
19:48the robe and the horse and do exactly as
19:50you have suggested for Mordecai the Jew
19:53who sits at the king's gate.
19:55Do not neglect a single detail."
19:59Haman's stomach dropped. He had built a
20:02gallows to kill Mordecai.
20:05Now, he was forced to dress Mordecai in
20:07royal robes. He was forced to lead
20:10Mordecai's horse through the city.
20:13He had to shout Mordecai's praises at
20:16the top of his lungs.
20:18It was the ultimate humiliation for a
20:20wicked heart.
20:22When it was over, Mordecai quietly
20:24returned to [music] his post at the gate
20:27unfazed by the honor.
20:29But Haman rushed home covering his head
20:32in grief.
20:33His wife looked at him with dread.
20:36"Since Mordecai is of Jewish origin, you
20:40cannot [music] stand against him.
20:42You will surely come to ruin."
20:46Before she even finished speaking,
20:48[music]
20:49the king's eunuchs arrived at the door.
20:53It was [music] time for Esther's second
20:56banquet.
20:58The second banquet began. The wine was
21:01poured. The tension in the room was
21:03invisible but razor [music] sharp.
21:06King Xerxes looked at his beautiful
21:09queen.
21:10"Now, Queen Esther, what is your
21:12petition? It will [music] be given to
21:14you, even up to half the kingdom."
21:17Esther did not smile this time. Her face
21:20was serious. Her eyes were filled with
21:23the heavy truth she had hidden for
21:25years. "If I have found favor with you,
21:28Your Majesty, and if it pleases you,
21:31grant me my life and spare my people."
21:35The king's brow furrowed in confusion.
21:38"For I and my people have been sold to
21:41be destroyed, to be killed and
21:44annihilated. If we had merely been sold
21:47as slaves, I would have kept quiet. But
21:50no such distress would justify
21:52disturbing the king."
21:54Xerxes sat up straight. His eyes burned
21:57with sudden, fierce anger.
21:59"Who would dare threaten the life of his
22:02queen?
22:04Who is he?
22:05Where is the man who has dared to do
22:09such a thing?"
22:12Esther did not yell. She did not panic.
22:16She slowly raised her hand and pointed
22:18directly across the table.
22:21"This wicked Haman."
22:23Haman [music] froze. Absolute terror
22:26seized his body. He looked at the queen,
22:29realizing for the first time that the
22:31woman sitting beside the king was
22:33Jewish. The king was so enraged he could
22:37[music] not speak. He stood up and
22:39stormed out into the palace garden.
22:44Haman knew he was dead.
22:46>> Please.
22:47>> He threw himself at Esther's feet,
22:49begging for his life. He fell across the
22:52couch where she was reclining, pleading
22:55desperately. Just as the king walked
22:58back into the room. "Will he even
23:01assault the queen while she is with me
23:04in the house?" The moment the words left
23:07the king's mouth, guards rushed in. His
23:10fate was sealed.
23:12One of the eunuchs stepped forward. A
23:15gallows, 75 ft high, stands by Haman's
23:18house.
23:19He had it made for Mordecai, who spoke
23:23up to help the king.
23:25The king
23:26>> [music]
23:26>> didn't hesitate.
23:28"Hang him on it." And they did.
23:31>> [music]
23:31>> The man who sought to destroy God's
23:34people was destroyed by his own wicked
23:37trap.
23:40Esther's story
23:42>> [music]
23:42>> did not end there.
23:43The king gave her Haman's estate.
23:46>> [music]
23:46>> He gave Mordecai his signet ring.
23:50And they wrote a new decree
23:52allowing the Jewish people to arm and
23:55defend themselves, securing their
23:58survival.
23:59But the brilliance of the book of Esther
24:01is found in what is not written.
24:04>> [clears throat]
24:04>> Interestingly, [music] the name of God
24:06is not mentioned a single time in the
24:09entire book of Esther.
24:11Yet, [music] his fingerprints are on
24:14every single page.
24:16Esther teaches us [music] the profound
24:18power of trusting God's invisible hand.
24:21When she was taken to the [music]
24:23palace, she did not fight her
24:25circumstances.
24:27When she faced death, she did not rely
24:30on her own strength. She stopped. She
24:33fasted. She prayed.
24:36When the king offered her anything she
24:38wanted, she didn't rush ahead of God's
24:40timing. She was patient. She waited for
24:43the Lord to align the sleepless night of
24:46the king with the arrogant heart of
24:49Haman.
24:50We live in a world that tells us to
24:53force doors open, to rely entirely on
24:57our own strength, to panic when the
24:59enemy surrounds us.
25:01But true faith is different. True faith
25:05is the ability to walk into a terrifying
25:07situation, to look at an impossible
25:10obstacle, and remain completely anchored
25:13in the peace of God.
25:15You may not be facing a king.
25:18You may not be saving a nation.
25:21But you are fighting battles every day.
25:26Battles for your family.
25:29Battles for your future.
25:31Battles for your own soul.
25:35And the question is,
25:36are you [music] trusting God's timing
25:39even when he seems silent?
25:42Perhaps the challenges you are facing
25:44right now are not accidents. Perhaps the
25:47heavy burdens you carry are part of a
25:50greater
25:51>> [music]
25:51>> divine plan.
25:52Perhaps, like Esther,
25:54God has placed you in your exact
25:56position for such a time as this.
26:00If this story encouraged your faith,
26:03if it reminded you of God's perfect
26:05timing,
26:06I would love to hear your thoughts in
26:09the comment section.
26:11And for more powerful stories
26:13>> [music]
26:14>> from scripture,
26:16consider subscribing to Stories [music]
26:19of the Olives.
26:21Stand firm in your faith.
26:24Trust his timing.
26:26And remember
26:27>> [music]
26:27>> that God is always working behind the
26:32scenes.
