0:02this slide is showing us compact bone
0:06you should notice
0:08all of these
0:10circular structures
0:14each of those individual circular
0:16structures is called an osteon and an
0:19osteon is the structural unit of compact
0:23bone
0:25osteons have four basic parts you see
0:28they all have that open space in the
0:30center
0:31that open space is going to have blood
0:34vessels and nerves running through it
0:36and it's called the central canal
0:39very convenient
0:42and then if you look around the circular
0:44space
0:46you'll see it's kind of like there's
0:48different
0:49layers almost like rings on a tree
0:53those individual layers are called
0:55lamellae
0:59and then if you look kind of separating
1:02the lamellae there's all these dark
1:05spots
1:06now those dark spots are actually open
1:09spaces
1:11the open spaces have just been stained
1:13with a dye
1:15and those open spaces are called lacunae
1:22and in the lacunae you would find
1:25osteocytes
1:28remember the prefix osti oste means bone
1:33and the suffix site cyt
1:37always means a cell
1:39so an osteocyte is just a bone cell
1:44so the lacunae is an open space for the
1:47bone cell to reside in
1:53lastly you see how there are all these
1:58black lines radiating out from the
2:00central canal
2:03those are called canaliculi
2:07and the canaliculi
2:10is how
2:11nutrition from the blood supply coming
2:14up through the central canal is able
2:18to reach the osteocytes
2:20living within the lacunae
