0:06did you know your body has its own

0:08version of a sewer system for removing

0:10unwanted toxins waste and excess water

0:13from the body

0:14this is called our lymphatic system

0:17like our blood circulation the lymphatic

0:19system is made up of millions of little

0:22vessels that branch all around our body

0:25but whereas arteries and veins carry

0:27blood the lymphatic vessels are much

0:30much finer and carry a colorless fluid

0:32called lymph our lymphatic system has

0:35three main duties

0:37one it contains white blood cells called

0:40lymphocytes which are used to fight

0:42infection

0:43two it acts as a one-way drainage system

0:46transporting fluid from body tissues

0:48into the blood circulation

0:50three it gets rid of waste products

0:52produced by cells

0:57as blood circulates the body plasma

0:59leaves the blood vessels and travels

1:01into the body tissues delivering food

1:04oxygen and hormones to the cells

1:07this plasma becomes tissue fluid and

1:09surrounds all our body's tissues it then

1:12collects waste products excess water and

1:14toxins from the cells ninety percent of

1:16this fluid passes back into the blood

1:18circulation however ten percent of the

1:21fluid is left behind and is known as

1:24lymph we therefore need a system to

1:26drain this lymph fluid

1:28so that we don't end up as a swollen

1:30fluid-filled balloon

1:31hence the lymphatic system the lymph

1:34fluid drains into lymph vessels where it

1:37then travels to lymph nodes which are

1:40found all around your body to stop

1:42backflow the lymph vessels have one-way

1:44valves and muscular walls that contract

1:47to force the lymph forward this is

1:49happening in millions of little

1:51lymphatic vessels in your body every

1:53minute of every day the lymph nodes

1:56filter the lymph destroying or trapping

1:58anything harmful the lymph nodes contain

2:01white blood cells called lymphocytes

2:03which attack and break down bacteria

2:05viruses damage cells or cancer cells

2:09this filtering and destroying is an

2:11important part of our immune system and

2:13stops nasty substances being fed back

2:16into our bloodstream which would make us

2:18sick the waste products and destroyed

2:20bacteria are then carried in the lymph

2:22fluid through larger lymph vessels up to

2:25your neck where the thoracic duct

2:27empties the lymph back into the blood

2:29circulation the bloodstream then removes

2:31the waste products from the body as it

2:33does with other waste

2:35as well as the lymph fluid our lymphatic

2:37system also includes a few organs the

2:40spleen

2:41thymus tonsils and adenoids they all

2:44have roles in helping our body fight off

2:47infections

2:48unfortunately like any sewer system

2:50things can go horribly wrong

2:52sometimes we get infections that cause

2:55the pumping to break down

2:57this can cause your arms or legs to

2:59swell to huge proportions

3:01sometimes the debris or other bad

3:03substances can make it past lymph nodes

3:06sometimes cancer cells do this and

3:08spread the cancer to other parts of the

3:10body which obviously isn't good for now

3:13we wish you all the best for your

3:14lymphatic health which you can help

3:17maintain by drinking lots of water and

3:19exercising

3:20keep on pumping if you liked the video

3:22give it a thumbs up and don't forget to

3:24subscribe comment below if you have any

3:27questions why not check out our fusco

3:29app as well

3:30until next time
