0:00Hello, welcome to this YouTube channel
0:02today.
0:03And in this video we are going to be
0:04talking about
0:06one of the nasty gospel called
0:09scale harmonization theory
0:12that every pianist needs to know. This
0:15is one of the particular theory that
0:19gospel players of old have been using
0:23for years until even our own age they
0:27are still using it. And what is this
0:30particular
0:32gospel scale harmonization?
0:35You must have heard things like this
0:37online.
0:40Right? You must have heard things like
0:46And you've been wondering how do they
0:48play that movement particularly?
0:51You know, by the time we dive deep into
0:54this theoretical concept, you are now
0:56going to know the theory behind most of
0:58the movement you play at times and you
1:01don't really understand what's really
1:02going on in those movements. And also
1:04you are going to understand
1:07how to harmonize scale properly
1:11when you are playing and also how to
1:14apply them. I'm going to give you guide
1:17to guide step by step on how to make use
1:19of it. So let's dive right in into this
1:23amazing theory.
1:28Playing scales and harmonizing it is two
1:31different things. You can play a scale
1:35harmonizing it is something else.
1:40You see that?
1:44That is harmonizing. Now, what am I
1:47doing? I'm harmonizing the scale. So
1:49there is a two big difference among the
1:52two concepts. All right? Now
1:55how
1:57do we come
1:58to an understanding that you need to
2:01apply scale harmonization
2:04when playing?
2:07All right? But before we dive right in
2:08into that, let's talk about the solid
2:11foundation of scale harmonization.
2:15How do we harmonize scales?
2:21Now, look at this. I'm going to show you
2:23how you can harmonize scales. So, let's
2:24say you take
2:26your one.
2:29I want you to know this. Every chord you
2:31play has a scale number one.
2:34And number two,
2:36the scale you are playing can start from
2:39any of the notes in that chord. I will
2:42come again. Every chord you play has a
2:45scale, and the scale can start from any
2:47note of that chord.
2:49All right?
2:51Now, your C major scale can start from
2:53E.
3:02Yes, it can start from E. It can start
3:04from
3:05G.
3:09And for those of you that are a little
3:11bit advanced, you get to know that this
3:12is this are also modes, right? This are
3:15also modes. If you need me to talk about
3:17modes,
3:18this has to do with
3:19scales.
3:21All right? Modes, put it down in the
3:23comment section. Just comment modes, and
3:25I'm going to make a video about modes.
3:27And if you also know what it is, drop it
3:28down in the comment section. So, you can
3:30start from the one.
3:35It can start from the three.
3:41Yeah, you can you can stop here or stop
3:43on the E.
3:46Even
3:49You see that? It can start from there.
3:50So, now, how do you now reharmonize
3:53Sorry, how do you now harmonize it?
3:56So, you can play your one here
3:59and choose to play your three here.
4:01All you just have to do is follow it.
4:04Sorry.
4:09Can you see that?
4:18Can you see that? So, when you are
4:19harmonizing,
4:21you can stop on the note.
4:27Right? I'm just showing you the
4:29foundation of harmonizing, right? That
4:32is how you can harmonize your scale, no
4:33matter the scale, no matter the scale.
4:36You can start from any of the notes
4:39to play the scale. And by the time you
4:42play the scale of that chord,
4:44yes, then you can now start harmonizing
4:46with the notes.
4:47That is a very deep
4:49mystery that many people don't know,
4:51especially many pianists don't know. By
4:53the time you understand that, you're
4:54going to harmonize dangerously. Now,
4:57let's talk about
5:00how you can properly
5:02harmonize when it comes to gospel terms.
5:06When it comes to gospel terms, and one
5:08of the ways we harmonize over the years
5:11is we use what we call the three-note
5:14strategy, the three-note strategy. And
5:17what's the three-note strategy?
5:19Basically, you're picking three notes
5:21out of the
5:22scale, and you pick out three notes also
5:25out of the scale on your left hand,
5:27starting from the second note. So, when
5:29you're harmonizing, you can choose to
5:31pick three notes from the from the
5:34third note on your left, or you can
5:36choose to take it from there.
5:38Can you hear that?
5:41Look at that. So, we take We use the
5:43three-note strategy to harmonize. And as
5:45we go on, you're going to understand
5:46more secrets and more deep deeper
5:49secrets to what you've been playing over
5:51the years and you really don't know
5:52about. Now, the three note strategy
5:54works like this. So, we pick
5:57three notes for each
6:01note of the chord
6:03or rather of the scale.
6:06So, we go to the two.
6:09Can you see that? So, I move from
6:13and move to the two.
6:16Look at that.
6:19Then you move to the three.
6:22For those of you that might be a little
6:23bit confused, this is how to get it.
6:25So, by the time you play,
6:26we are using our
6:31We are using it to play the three note
6:33strategy. So, your right hand is the
6:35anchor that is showing your left hand
6:38where to go. So, by the time you take
6:40three notes, you take three notes here.
6:42You know you are going to your two.
6:44So, you know you're going to your two.
6:47You You take your hand from here, you
6:48shift it here.
6:51So, it becomes this.
6:53Then from there, you shift to the third
6:55one, which is me. You shift it again.
6:59Can you see that? Then you shift.
7:04Then you shift again.
7:07Like that.
7:10You see that?
7:12And if you continue,
7:15Can you see that we are back?
7:17Right?
7:29Can you see that?
7:30That is how you can properly harmonize
7:33those scales. So, the same way you do
7:39So, we are now using what we call the
7:41three-note strategy. Take three notes
7:43out of the the
7:45the first scale of the scale. Take three
7:48notes out of the scale
7:50of the the note you are harmonizing.
7:52So, you now take it.
7:56You can now start with adding technique.
8:03Now, this may not make sense to you.
8:06But, as we dive right in, more and more,
8:08it's going to be more clearer to you on
8:09how to properly use a scale
8:11harmonization.
8:13And now, how do we now apply this when
8:16it comes to gospel? Now that we know
8:21how to harmonize our scale.
8:29Right?
8:30Remember, the best way for you to
8:32harmonize is
8:36you use the scale. So, you take three
8:37notes out of the scale. You go to the
8:39next.
8:46Now,
8:48let us now talk about the application
8:51of this. But, before we talk about the
8:52application,
8:54I want us to know that many of us watch

9:54subscribe.
9:56All right, so let's dive right in into
9:58the teaching.
10:00Now, how do you make use of this in
10:02gospel terms?
10:05From the beginning I played this.
10:09All right, I'm going to play a song I
10:11played years ago using this movement.
10:13Jesus at the center of it all, all
10:14right?
10:26This is what I did.
10:37Can you hear that?
10:39Using scale harmonization in everything.
10:42So what was I doing
10:44particularly?
10:46What was I doing
10:48in this particular
10:50video?
10:52What I was doing was very, very, very,
10:54very simple.
10:59So what was I doing at the moment?
11:02I'm basically taking my one I did
11:07I used my one, I took the second note
11:10in my chord, I used it to harmonize the
11:12scale.
11:13Just like I said previously. And for my
11:16four, I did
11:26Another one, you see?
11:28From the second note.
11:31It's still part of the whole
11:33major C major scale. It's the old part
11:35of it.
11:37Now, I'm not here to break down that
11:39video. I'm basically just here to show
11:40you example of what you can do with
11:42this. Now, let's dive into
11:45the proper
11:46application.
11:48So, let's say you play a song. Let's
11:49take any song.
12:01Do you hear that?
12:03I don't want to use just African song.
12:04Let me look for a proper gospel song.
12:11Now, let's take I love you, Jesus. That
12:14is our modern anything.
12:17I love
12:18you, Jesus.
12:22I
12:23worship you, adore you.
12:28Just
12:29to tell you that
12:33Do you see that?
12:39Yeah.
12:40I love
12:42you, Jesus.
12:45I worship
12:47you.
12:48Adore you.
12:50I can even do 24.
12:54You see the concept? So, the concept is
12:56basically for you to harmonize and take
12:58it down, resolve. So, you can do
13:05You can do
13:07Here
13:09I am to bow.
13:12Here I am
13:14to bow.
13:18Here
13:19I am to serve you.
13:22You are my God.
13:27Lord, you are good.
13:36See that?
13:40altogether
13:57Now, for those of you that might be a
13:59little bit still confused on how to
14:03apply, because I know you're getting it,
14:05but a little bit still confused, let me
14:07give you a proper way to apply it, so
14:11you can understand what's really really
14:12going on in this. Now, we're going to be
14:15reharmonizing harmonizing our one.
14:19We're going to be harmonizing our four.
14:23We're going to be harmonizing our five.
14:27You see that? So, that's the outcome.
14:30That's the outcome of the
14:31harmonization.
14:34Yes. So, that's what we're going to be
14:36using in songs.
14:38Remember, we're going to be using them
14:40to resolve
14:41and also we're going to be using them as
14:44harmonization. So, let's take a song
14:45again.
14:47Yeah, I'm to sing.
14:51Yeah,
14:53I'm to
14:56See that?
15:02Yeah, I'm to sing.
15:05You are my
15:11altogether
15:19altogether
15:28>> You see that's why I use the four.
15:36The five.
15:38Look at that.
15:41So, you can use it for every other song.
15:44So,
16:17You see what I'm doing? You can play
16:19another song like
16:21um we we we
16:23Oh, it's like
16:43Look at that.
17:07You see that? That is how you can
17:08properly apply it. Now, there is another
17:12step, another advanced way to properly
17:15ad-
17:16you know, apply this again. Now, that is
17:18where we now go to the advanced part of
17:20it where we do things like you hear
17:21every time.
17:25Yes.
17:59Now,
18:01all right? There's an advanced part of
18:03this, you know, you can do
18:10Yes, those particular moments you hear,
18:12they are also scale harmonization.
18:15But, here is what we're going we're
18:16going to do.
18:18If this has helped you so far, please
18:20click that subscribe button, drop a
18:22comment, and also like.
