0:00Five episodes ago, we lost.

0:03Lost?

0:04I thought we've been doing OK.

0:05This is the fight of our lives.

0:08No, this is a podcast.

0:10And we are going to win, whatever it takes.

0:15You know, I gotta say, that was pretty well done.

0:18Thanks.

0:19You kind of nailed that.

0:19Good job.

0:21Yeah, you practiced.

0:22[THEME MUSIC]

0:27Welcome back to the countdown to Avengers Doomsday podcast.

0:31We are in the endgame now.

0:33Oh, how long were you waiting to say that?

0:34So long.

0:35I'm Frank Alvarez.

0:36She needs no introduction, but my incredible co-host.

0:39Iman Vellani.

0:40Thanks for putting up with me to the point

0:42where we have gotten to this episode, because--

0:44Thank you.

0:45It has been-- we have talked Avengers 2012.

0:48We argued about Civil War.

0:50We gushed over Infinity War.

0:51This feels like a weird therapy session, honestly.

0:54And now here we are.

0:55Yeah.

0:56I mean, what do we even say?

0:59Dude, I don't even know what words I would put into what

1:03order, because, like, I want to properly describe

1:06how much this movie means to me and means to me as a Marvel fan.

1:11The entire Infinity saga, it's such a labor of love,

1:14and it really comes down to this film.

1:16And the filmmakers, they're all over this being a fan movie.

1:21This was a gift for us.

1:23Yeah, and it also--

1:24all of these movies have felt like cultural moments,

1:27but this feels like the culmination.

1:29And getting the opportunity to look back on it now,

1:32seemingly-- how many years have we moved?

1:34Are we seven years from it?

1:36It was everything that I wanted it to be then.

1:41And having being able to given the opportunity to look back

1:43on it now with a different-- not necessarily

1:46a different perspective-- but just a different person.

1:49Yeah.

1:49It's still so impressive, and it's such

1:54a lightning in a bottle moment.

1:57Can you Imagine?

1:5811 years, 22 movies worth of storytelling all comes down

2:05to this one three-hour long--

2:08Yes, It was.

2:09It was three hours.

2:10Film.

2:11But it's such a rewarding experience as an audience member

2:15who has invested this much time and energy

2:18and passion and curiosity and love and emotional investment.

2:24It's taxing.

2:25There was so much excitement, because we

2:27walked out of Infinity War on an understandably dour note.

2:32We knew something else was coming.

2:34We said this last week.

2:35And we were so--

2:36we were hungry.

2:36We were thirsty for it.

2:38So the moment that we got something-- and we even just--

2:40when we just found out it was called Avengers Endgame,

2:43immediately, people went back and started scrubbing through,

2:46found the instances where that phrase had been used, and said,

2:50how are we going to piece together

2:51an idea of what this could be?

2:53Because there was not a lot of information that we had.

2:56And that, to me, is so cool, because just having this year

3:00between Infinity War and Endgame made

3:01everybody want to go back and rewatch these movies

3:04and solve the mystery.

3:05And, in doing so, you are completely

3:08rewarded by doing that in Avengers Endgame,

3:11just by knowing what cheeseburgers meant.

3:13Well, there's so many callbacks

3:15and beautiful little ribbons put on things and things

3:18that you also wouldn't think they would call back to.

3:22The cheeseburger line being a great example of that.

3:24That is really from the start.

3:26So when you see something--

3:27They spent some time in Thor The Dark World world.

3:30Yeah, I mean, where, seemingly, they got a lot--

3:34pulled a lot of information from, and there

3:36was just so much here.

3:38I mean, just the time heist.

3:40All of our favorite moments, and it

3:42was just reminding us why we love

3:45these movies so much, because they were all

3:48impressive character moments.

3:50These movies all have emotional arcs or something.

3:53None of them have been quite as emotional, emotional.

3:57I watch this movie-- when I first saw it,

4:00every time after that, including the time

4:03that we rewatched for this, it gets me a little bit.

4:06It definitely gets me a little, like a little, like, ugh, ugh.

4:09You're a little soft in there.

4:11A little.

4:12There's a horse in my throat.

4:14What is it?

4:15A frog in my throat.

4:16That's it.

4:16[LAUGHING]

4:19But pull their weight emotionally.

4:23There's moments that make you cheer,

4:25that make you cry, that make you laugh, that make you scared.

4:28It does it all.

4:30It immediately shows us the weight

4:32of what previously happened.

4:33You know, that opening scene where Clint is on the farm

4:37with his family, and you're--

4:39Like, what a way to start a movie.

4:40Yeah, like you're thrust right back into it.

4:42Like, oh, you were excited, weren't you?

4:44Excited to see Hawkeye, and then

4:45you're just like, everything is ripped away from him.

4:49And mayonnaise on hot dogs, that was the first crime.

4:52Hey, you guys want mayo or mustard or both?

4:56Who puts mayo in a hot dog?

4:58Probably your brothers.

5:00Two mustard, please.

5:01That was strange.

5:03I will say, as a very passionate hot dog fan--

5:06Are you?

5:07If I got dusted with a hot dog in my hand,

5:09not the worst thing that happens.

5:10I mean, there are worse ways to go.

5:12And then you come back, and there's

5:13mayonnaise on your hot dog.

5:14I mean, that, I'd be pissed about, but if I came back

5:16and the hot dog was still there, I'd be like,

5:17oh, it's like nothing happened, you know.

5:19I don't know if the hot dog would have blipped with you,

5:23and, like, where in this limbo is it in those five years?

5:27Like, does it decompose?

5:29Yeah that's a great question.

5:31Does it melt into your hand?

5:32You suddenly have a hot dog hand.

5:34I have questions.

5:35Yeah, there are a lot of like--

5:36I think we didn't get too far into the hot dog lore with

5:38this movie, which, if we can--

5:40OK, that's a whole other podcast.

5:41I agree, I think we could do five episodes on that alone.

5:43Great.

5:44But yeah, no, if I went with a hot dog in my hand,

5:48worst ways to go.

5:49No, but I was already crying.

5:51I mean, those title cards, like the flip logo,

5:54you're immediately missing all of the dusted people,

5:58and I love that little attention to detail.

6:00I feel even the orchestra was thinned out.

6:02The movie just started on a really lonely note.

6:05And then we cut to Tony and Nebula in space.

6:08They're playing-- what is it-- paper football.

6:11Ya!

6:12You don't need to do that, because you're

6:16just holding the position.

6:17The message he records for Pepper is like--

6:20Oh, my god, gut wrenching.

6:21It's like a perfect amount of emotion,

6:24and he's just like, this is going to be real tear jerker.

6:27It's like he's still Tony, but you can feel it fading away,

6:31and he's kind of emaciated.

6:32He's so emaciated.

6:33Oh, my god, and he's back in that black tank top.

6:36And then you just see golden light bathe Tony

6:40as he takes his last breaths, and Carol Danvers

6:43shows up and saves the day.

6:45Oh, my god.

6:46I imagine that that exerted a lot of energy

6:49for her to carry that ship.

6:51Dude, she literally restarted a sun.

6:53Yes, she does.

6:54So she comes to the rescue, grabs Milano, brings it back.

6:57I love that when we-- the next time we've seen-- well,

7:00the first time we've seen Steve since Infinity War,

7:02he's well, clean cut and shaved and everything.

7:07He's shaving.

7:08And then this sink starts to rattle.

7:10Yes.

7:10And then Tony comes out, and it's their first reunion

7:14since Civil War.

7:15Dude, that was like--

7:20I know where you've put your support in Tony.

7:24But watching that, I think everyone got behind Tony there,

7:28because it was understandable to be like-- you look back,

7:32and you see how they had gotten to where they

7:34had gotten in Infinity War.

7:35And he was like, yeah, we did lose, and we weren't together.

7:38We didn't lose together, you know.

7:40And he's just like, coward, liar.

7:42Oh, my god.

7:43The animosity Tony feels towards cap in this moment

7:46is so gut wrenching to watch, because there is that moment

7:50in Civil War where Tony's not speaking, and Cap's like,

7:54it's because he's already made up his mind.

7:55And Tony's like, yeah, you know me so well.

7:57And it's true, though.

7:58They really did become good friends,

8:00and they really do understand each other

8:02on a really soul level, I feel.

8:04And for Tony to look him in the eye,

8:07and rip off his chest piece, and be like, yeah, you're a liar.

8:12You betrayed me.

8:14That was devastating to watch.

8:15It's hard, because they've all lost.

8:18The planet has lost.

8:20They've collectively lost all these people.

8:22And it's going through the montage

8:23showing all the people that were snapped out of existence.

8:27And like, you realize Tony called this.

8:31He was right.

8:32This is as-- back in Avengers Age of Ultron,

8:35he said, this is what I'm trying to protect.

8:38This is what I'm trying to prevent.

8:40And it happens, so you know that he wanted it to be like, I told

8:45you so, but it didn't feel good to say,

8:47I told you so because look at what came--

8:50Tony doesn't want to be right.

8:51No, absolutely not.

8:54What we needed was a suit of armor around the world.

8:57Remember that, whether it impacted our precious freedoms

9:00or not.

9:01That's what we needed.

9:03Captain Marvel show up again.

9:05Well, she's there, and then they go to Thanos garden,

9:08because she's like, I'm going to go kill Thanos now.

9:09BRB. - Yeah.

9:10She's just casual about it.

9:12Yeah.

9:12I mean, I think even Rhodey says,

9:15we could have used that back in Wakanda,

9:17or something along those lines.

9:19But I love that he just shows up on the garden.

9:23He's just making soup.

9:25And I love that they showed his Thanos armor scarecrow,

9:28which is from the comics.

9:29From the comics, yes.

9:30That is such a great image.

9:31And he's like wearing t-shirts.

9:32He's cooking.

9:34He's lost a little weight.

9:36Yeah, he's looking a little rough.

9:37I mean, he's got the limp and stuff like that.

9:40It's interesting, because he gets-- we leave him

9:43on such a high note that to then immediately see him at probably

9:48the weakest that he has ever been,

9:50even though he just won, is such an interesting decision.

9:53I wonder what he feels internally.

9:55If it's a real deep sense of peace,

9:57or if a little part of him was sad to not

10:00share this garden with anyone.

10:02I mean, I think he summed it up in saying,

10:05this is the burden I must bear.

10:07I have to be the one that understands why we got to where

10:11we got to, and then what comes next as a result.

10:14The conversation that they have with him, and he says,

10:18I use the stones to destroy the stones.

10:21I am inevitable.

10:22And off with his head.

10:25Yeah, I mean, Thor does his thing just immediately.

10:28Like, doesn't even wait, just does.

10:30I went for the head, which is what

10:32he has had to carry with him.

10:33And then Nebula though closing her dad's eyes.

10:36Every moment with Nebula and Thanos,

10:38it really moves me to be that forgotten child.

10:43And, you know, she never got the love

10:45from Thanos that she wanted, but she still loves him.

10:48Say that in the camera.

10:49Speak directly to your parents.

10:50It feels like this is coming from a place of understanding.

10:52Mom, Dad, you raised me real well.

10:55I watched this with them, to be fair.

10:57I think I was really insufferable to watch this movie

10:59with, because I didn't let my parents-- like,

11:01I didn't let my parents even take a sip of water.

11:03I mean, you're not really selling

11:04going to the movies with your parents

11:06in a very favorable light right now.

11:07No, but I wanted to share this with them.

11:09I think this is how they bonded with me

11:12and understood me on a very cellular level.

11:16But back to the movie.

11:17We get the five year jump.

11:19Five years later.

11:20What was your reaction to that?

11:21Because I remember it was, like, five years later.

11:25Well, the 5 was like, OK.

11:28And then the years is where there was an audible gasp in.

11:31Because you know what this movie tackles

11:34is how each of these people are dealing with grief

11:37and dealing with loss.

11:38And, for a lot of people, it's not

11:42necessarily time that helps them overcome something like that.

11:44It's personal little milestones and things

11:46that they have to realize.

11:47So when you see a visual representation of-- they've

11:51been living with this for five years, it's like, ooh.

11:54It's like, oh, we're really not coming back from this.

11:56That's crazy.

11:57And then it opens with Cap doing a support group.

12:02And it's just such a sweet moment that like--

12:05oh, they're still persevering.

12:06Of course, Cap would hold a support group.

12:08But see, what we do is we jump from seeing how Cap is dealing

12:11with this to seeing how Black Widow

12:14is dealing with loss and grief.

12:15And these are real ways that a lot of people

12:18like us deal with it.

12:19It's LIKE helping other people and trying to deal with it

12:21ourselves.

12:21And Cap is trying see the bright side.

12:23He's like, I saw some whales.

12:24Yeah, and then you see Black Widow's representation

12:27of dealing with it is just diving

12:29into work, which is a thing that a lot of people do.

12:32She is like constantly on the verge of tears.

12:35Yeah.

12:36Just that beginning that we see her.

12:37Oh, and I love that little like bit.

12:39They added her ballet shoes, on one of the chairs.

12:43And I'm like, I'm glad she picked that back up.

12:46You know, the red of her hair is growing back out.

12:49And it was just like, the attention

12:50to detail in that scene, I was really, really impressed by it.

12:53But we're seeing how these characters right now are dealing

12:58with this loss and this grief.

12:59And then we finally get probably the most

13:03important character that has ever existed in any MCU property

13:08ever.

13:08It's the damn rat.

13:10I mean, I like to think that there is a story to this rat,

13:15and we have just not yet explored it.

13:16And it might be just as emotionally taxing--

13:18I love how we're only 10 minutes into this movie.

13:21And then we get Ant-Man.

13:23And I love when Ant-Man knocks on the Avengers Campus door.

13:27There's this sparkle that comes into Natasha's

13:29eyes, the sense of hope.

13:30Oh, my god, there's something now.

13:32That's the front door. - Ant-Man.

13:33I know you know--

13:34I know you know that.

13:35It's the front gate.

13:36I really need to talk to you guys.

13:37And then obviously they start talking about the time travel

13:40stuff, and they visit Tony, who we see

13:42has fulfilled his dream of having this farm and a kid

13:47with Pepper.

13:48Yeah, which it's weird, because there are people

13:51that experience loss, and they are able to pull

13:54it together and build.

13:56I mean, five years to be able to build that life.

13:59And it looks like Morgan is maybe around

14:02three years old at this time.

14:04So you start to do the mental math in your head

14:07to figure all that stuff out.

14:08But he really came out of this with a reason

14:13to live and continue his life and make

14:16something of the opportunity, which adds to his reluctance.

14:20You know, why are you going to jump

14:22back in and risk everything when you've already-- you have it

14:25now?

14:26Yeah, but it's also like, he must be thinking about Morgan,

14:28too.

14:29Yeah, I have it, but will she have it?

14:31I got to think about her future, too, and the legacy

14:35that I'm leaving behind.

14:36And I have what so many people never got.

14:40I mean, this is the part--

14:43I think, of all the movies-- this

14:44is the one that, seeing it now is a father,

14:47is the most like, whoa.

14:49Because of what you're saying is,

14:52you try to protect your child, and I have it.

14:55I don't want to mess it up.

14:56But then what could be as a result of me

14:59helping and what world will it build for my child who

15:03is sitting here?

15:04I got my second chance right here.

15:07I can't roll the dice on it.

15:09So let's move on to Smart Hulk.

15:12What are your thoughts on Smart Hulk?

15:13Onward and upward, yeah.

15:15Because that was quite a shock to the senses for me.

15:19He figured out the brawn and the brain,

15:21and now he's a local celebrity.

15:23Yeah, I understand why they did it for this movie.

15:26I'm a big fan of the whole raging green monster

15:29thing that he does.

15:30I get why they did it, because they needed to show someone,

15:35like Tony, came out of this and didn't lose entirely.

15:39Yeah, I love when he says that, for so long,

15:41he was thinking of Hulk as the disease, when really

15:44he could have been the cure.

15:45And it's such a great metaphor for accepting

15:48all parts of yourselves and not trying to fight it.

15:51We are every-- we are a prism.

15:55And there was this entire side of the reflection

15:58that Bruce was just ignoring and didn't

16:00want to acknowledge and treat it as this evil poison

16:04inside of him.

16:05And so it's a cool thing on a character moment, but, my god,

16:09when he says Hulk out.

16:10Yeah, dap.

16:12He was like, Hulk out.

16:13And then he-- [LAUGHS].

16:14There was so much memeable content with Smart Hulk.

16:16Where he just goes, listen to your mother, she knows best.

16:20It's like, all right.

16:21I got a little nudge from my mom on that.

16:23Yeah, I bet, I bet, as she was spoiling the rest of the movie

16:27and not even realizing she was doing it.

16:28No.

16:29But Tony figures it out.

16:30He figures out how to properly go through--

16:32Supercash.

16:33We get the really cool montage where Steve, Natasha,

16:38Smart Hulk and Scott are doing the-- and I love the bit,

16:41where he's like, someone peed in my pants.

16:45I don't know if it was old me, baby me or just me me.

16:48Oh, my god.

16:49And then Hulk, you get that great moment of like,

16:51I see this as an absolute win.

16:52Yeah.

16:53Time travel.

16:54Yeah, watching it back, I'm like,

16:56every single one of these lines has been

16:58memed in some way or another.

17:00Let me ask you a question.

17:01Do you-- from the first time you watched it until

17:03the time you watched it now--

17:06have you tried to scream at the screen to tell Tony, don't, stay

17:10where you are, or do you kind of support

17:12him going out and doing it?

17:14Because you could argue honestly either way.

17:16I think I mentally prepared for this,

17:20but I was in such denial at the same time.

17:22I literally changed my phone name to Tony Stark

17:25won't die so that if anybody was airdropping in the vicinity,

17:30it would pop up.

17:31Funny story about that.

17:32When I went in for my Marvel audition, my screen test,

17:35it was with Sarah Finn and Lou D'Esposito,

17:37and Sarah and I took a selfie together--

17:41we took photos with all the producers.

17:43And it was on Sarah's phone, so she airdropped to me,

17:46and she's like, are you Tony Stark won't die?

17:50And I was like, did I get the part?

17:51Yeah. Yeah, yeah.

17:53You knew what you were doing.

17:54Oh yeah.

17:54You dropped the right amount of hints

17:56that you wanted the part.

17:58But now we have it.

18:00Tony has figured out the Mobius strip kind of version to it.

18:04I love the moment where he just goes like, shit.

18:08And then Morgan says it, and then the I love

18:11you 3,000 is just an absolute.

18:15Because that is a legit quantifiable source of currency

18:23in a household with children.

18:25My daughters did that, too, and my son

18:27did that, too, where it would be like,

18:28I love you the biggest thing that they knew.

18:30What was the biggest number?

18:32I don't remember, but the biggest number they knew forever

18:34was 10.

18:35So it was just like, I love you.

18:36Oh.

18:37But then it was the way they were doing 10, so it was like,

18:40I love you like this 10.

18:4110, but it meant more, you know.

18:43Yeah, then I love you like this 10,

18:44so it was not only the context of the number, it was like--

18:47And the fact that it came from RDJ's real kids,

18:50it makes it so personal and so sweet.

18:53And even that moment with Tony and Pepper, which I think

18:56is so important, and it comes back later when Tony's dying.

19:01He's like, what if I just didn't do anything about this?

19:03What if I threw it in the ocean in a locked box and Pepper

19:06was like, well, would you be able to rest?

19:08I mean, that is the biggest question.

19:11It's like, what does closure look like for Tony?

19:15And seemingly we get that here.

19:17You thought that at the beginning of the movie,

19:20having learned that he had a family

19:22and that he has kind of rebounded in a way.

19:25That felt like that might have been his closure.

19:27But there was always like-- you don't plug this stuff

19:30into your table and start looking at it

19:32if you're not going to try to find that closure for yourself.

19:35I mean, Tony's also someone who's always, he can't stop.

19:39He had to stop because of the blip.

19:41But he got this excuse to do a little bit more

19:44tinkering and inventing.

19:46Of course, he took it.

19:48And then, of course, he goes back to Avengers Campus,

19:50gives Cap back his shield.

19:52They are now doing the time heist.

19:54And I love that moment where they're

19:55all putting their fists together,

19:57and it creates a little--

19:58I mean, this is the Avengers.

20:01They're back, and it's taken freaking years

20:04at this point because of everything that

20:05happened, seemingly, after Avengers Age of Ultron,

20:08but they're back.

20:09They figure out that, OK, now we're

20:11going to do this time heist.

20:14Yeah, I feel like we got to speed through this one now.

20:17I could talk about each one for each episode.

20:19Yeah.

20:20We have so many epic moments.

20:22Battle of New York.

20:23Highlights, for you.

20:25What was your favorite parts?

20:26Oh, I mean, when they go back to the Battle of New York,

20:29I really loved just the battle of wits between the Ancient One

20:33and Smart Hulk. - Oh, yeah.

20:35Or Bruce.

20:36It was great to see Tilda Swinton--

20:37I love when she's like, you're a little early for Strange.

20:39Yeah, and just you always got the sense from Doctor Strange

20:43that they had known more than they were letting on.

20:46So in that moment where it's like, you're a little early,

20:48but Strange is supposed to be the best of us.

20:50I love that back and forth, because it just

20:53gave us enough to get us excited about--

20:57And the Ancient One immediately

20:58trusted him when he said like, yeah, well,

21:02Doctor Strange gave Thanos the time stone.

21:05Strange, he gave it away.

21:06He gave it to Thanos.

21:08- Willingly? - Yes.

21:09And there's so many great moments like that.

21:11The Cap v Cap fight.

21:13We get the moment of America's ass.

21:15Yes, we get--

21:16I'm glad you brought up America's ass.

21:18As far as I'm concerned, that's America's ass.

21:21That was a big--

21:22Let's talk about America's ass.

21:24We don't.

21:24I mean, we've talked enough about America's ass.

21:26What else is there?

21:27What else is there to talk about?

21:28I mean, the guy's got it.

21:30He's doing all right for himself.

21:31He is America's ass.

21:32Imagine being the stunt double who's never getting

21:34credit for that being his ass.

21:36Just in the credits, it just says, America's ass, so and so.

21:40Oh, man.

21:41So do me a favor, give me a rundown on the time heist.

21:44Who's going where?

21:45What stones are they trying to get?

21:46So we have Tony, Cap, Ant-Man.

21:50They're all in New York, and then they fumble,

21:54because Hulk hates stairs.

21:56Oh, so many stairs.

22:00And the tesseract falls.

22:02Loki then escapes onto Disney Plus.

22:05[LAUGHING]

22:09Great out.

22:09And then we have Thor and Rocket on Asgard.

22:13This is actually also one of my favorite moments,

22:16because I feel Thor The Dark World never gets a lot of love.

22:20I certainly don't give it enough love.

22:22But there are some really sweet moments, especially with Frigga,

22:26Thor's mom, where she's confronting this new Thor who

22:31she doesn't really recognize, and he

22:33thinks of himself as a failure.

22:35And Frigga is like, well, being a failure makes

22:37you just like everyone else.

22:38And Thor's like, but I am not supposed

22:40to be like everyone else.

22:42And Frigga is like, well, everyone fails at who they're

22:45supposed to be, but the measure of a person

22:48is how well they succeed at who they are.

22:51And I think that is a testament to heroism

22:54and just the thesis of all of these films, which

22:57is like, yeah, the superpowers are cool, and they're fun,

23:02but like, take that off.

23:03What are you?

23:04And how well do you succeed at being that person?

23:08And then Thor stealing his old self's Mjölnir is so fun to me,

23:12and he gets that little boost of validation.

23:15Yeah, well, he needed it, you know.

23:16And honestly, you see little wins during the time heist.

23:21Each of them are getting little things

23:22to just make them feel better about themselves, except for--

23:27Except for--

23:28Except for the team that goes over to Vormir.

23:30Oh, dear.

23:30So we have--

23:32Did no one warn them?

23:34Well, no one knew.

23:35The only person that was there--

23:36Nebula should have said something.

23:37I mean, Nebula knew where it was,

23:39but she might not necessarily have known how to get it.

23:42I mean, that's the debate that people--

23:44She could have put two and two together.

23:46She didn't say until later, like,

23:47oh, yeah, I guess Gamora never came back from there either.

23:50Yeah, but she also--

23:52there was nothing to suggest that the loss of Gamora

23:56is what was going to be the catalyst for getting this.

23:58She just knew that they went, and she didn't come back.

24:00OK, I'll give that to you.

24:01And I mean, it's Thanos, so they guy is not really known

24:04for being an A1 father, so.

24:06No.

24:07But you got three stones in New York,

24:09so you have that team over there.

24:11And then you have two teams that go back to 2014

24:13to get the power stone and the soul stone.

24:15Morag BTS of Chris Pratt dancing to Redbone.

24:19It makes me so happy.

24:21Yeah.

24:23I mean, anytime we can revisit Guardians of the Galaxy,

24:25I'm super pumped, because those movies are some of my favorites.

24:29And then we also get a bit of Camp Lehigh when they need

24:32the-- they fumble on the tesseract, and they're like, OK,

24:35I know where the tesseract is, and I

24:36know we need more Pymm particles,

24:37so we get a de-aged Hank Pymm.

24:40So good.

24:41There's a little teaser to his old comics--

24:43The original comic helmet.

24:45And Tony gets to say bye to his dad.

24:48I think it was everything he needed to hear, because so much

24:51of what he looked back on with his relationship with his father

24:55was like, never being good enough.

24:57And the line when his father says,

24:59the greater good has rarely outweighed my own self-interest.

25:02Yeah.

25:03And that just kind of solidified.

25:05Oh, I can be better.

25:07Here's how I will be better.

25:08And it allowed him to say bye, thank you, gave him a hug.

25:13That's great.

25:13No amount of money ever bought a second of time.

25:15Yeah, it was sweet.

25:17But also having seen seeing what happens as a result at the end

25:22of this movie, it's like, oh that is the most important

25:25scene in the entire movie.

25:26Because that is what puts a nice little bow on Tony's story

25:29and basically just says, from here on out, it is on the way

25:35downhill, but uphill, because it's uplifting,

25:38but it solidified where it was going.

25:39Yeah.

25:40While that happens, we also have Vormir.

25:43But before we get to Vormir, we have Cap seeing Peggy

25:47and stumbling in her office.

25:49Oh, my god, that look of longing as he's

25:52standing in the shadows, and she just somehow doesn't notice him.

25:55So much longing.

25:56Oh, damn.

25:57So much longing.

25:59I will say, under different pretenses,

26:02it's a horror movie, because he's in her office,

26:05and he's just going through her stuff.

26:06He's just standing so close to the window.

26:09Yeah, I mean, I'm glad it was heroic and not terrifying.

26:14The fact of which the photo that she has of him on the desk

26:17is skinny Steve.

26:19Yeah, it's the little-- it's the little

26:20pipsqueak that she liked.

26:21The little guy that she was like, this is my little dude.

26:25Yes, exactly like that.

26:26I think it was a little more--

26:27Just add a British accent.

26:28Yeah, I'm not going to do it.

26:30I'm not even going to try.

26:31It's my little dude.

26:33Yeah, that's a little cockney.

26:34I don't think Haley Atwell was really

26:36going with that version of it.

26:37I can't do it.

26:38So let's just move on.

26:39But that solidifies Cap's journey, as well.

26:43That's where he basically says, if I get the chance to come out

26:46on the other side of this, I'm going to get that life

26:48that Tony told me I need.

26:50Yeah.

26:52You want to get to Vormir, don't you?

26:53- I want to get to Vormir. - All right, go ahead.

26:54Go ahead. Get to Vormir.

26:56It's so sad.

26:56Yeah.

26:57It's so sad.

26:58The fact that--

26:59I think what's so devastating about it is that it should be--

27:04I think Natasha's arc had wrapped up really nicely,

27:08and her sacrifice, to me, made sense.

27:10But the fact that they kept teasing us as they

27:12were fighting of like, who's going to jump off the edge.

27:15And Clint just being feeling like he

27:17doesn't deserve to live after all the red on his ledger now.

27:21All the Ronin stuff.

27:22Yeah, it was pretty intense.

27:23But it's so--

27:25he's had this journey throughout since we

27:28meet him in Avengers where he's under Loki's mind spell.

27:33And the first question he asks when he snaps out of it

27:36is like, how many people did I kill?

27:37And Natasha's like, don't do that to yourself.

27:41But he feels so guilty.

27:42And that's like, dude, you actually have a family.

27:45You have something to live for.

27:47Well, during the time heist, we allow each of them to feel,

27:52and a little before the time heist, too, I guess.

27:53But during this act, certainly, you

27:55allow them to feel like they are making up for the losses

28:01of the last movie.

28:02And Black Widow, it feels like she makes up for it

28:05by bringing Clint back and rescuing him from the life

28:09that he was going out and living.

28:10And that was how he was dealing with his grief.

28:12So in her mind, it's just like, I've already got back

28:16the only family that I-- someone that I lost

28:19and the people that I care for, so I'm good.

28:23And man, that scene is just--

28:25the way that the music goes and undercuts everything.

28:30That final shot of Clint alone in that,

28:34the Vormir water holding the soul stone.

28:36It is crushing.

28:38Yeah, it's tough.

28:39But the big thing that we haven't talked about here

28:42is, as Nebula and Rhodey go back to 2014 to find the power stone,

28:47her wires get crossed with 2014 Nebula.

28:51So smart.

28:51And then Thanos, in 2014, which

28:55I think it was an Easter egg that they

28:57were fighting the Carbonites.

28:59I honestly don't know.

29:00Maybe.

29:01Maybe.

29:02I'm too far into the weeds here, but they basically--

29:052014 Thanos, a younger, more aggressive.

29:10He's at the start of his journey.

29:12Yeah.

29:13Then he gets into like--

29:17oh, this is let's view it all.

29:18This is what my destiny is like.

29:20I am inevitable.

29:22I am bound to win.

29:24And it is something that I need to make

29:26sure happens in this timeline and their timeline.

29:29And that's when we get the real revisiting

29:34of the villain of this movie.

29:35Because up until then, Thanos was gone.

29:37We didn't know what was going to happen.

29:38And we get him back, and we--

29:41He's even scarier.

29:43Take off from there, yeah.

29:44So they come back to Earth.

29:46They grieve over Natasha.

29:48She's not coming back.

29:52We have to make it worth it.

29:54And now Thor is the one who wants to try to do the snap.

29:58And Hulk is like, nah, I got this.

30:02Yeah, he's like, it's like I'm made for it.

30:03Oh, my god.

30:04- You know, and because-- - I'm sorry.

30:05That line.

30:06The radiation that's coming off of it is mostly gamma.

30:09So he feels this sense of like, OK, here's where I can step up.

30:14And it's the Hulk.

30:15It's not an earthly being anymore

30:19because of all, you know.

30:20So he feels this sense of like, I'm going to do this.

30:22Yeah.

30:23I'm going to step up.

30:24And from there on out, it is non-stop.

30:28My god.

30:29But I like the way they had that moment of quiet

30:31and eased us into the fact that the snap worked.

30:34We hear a little bit more birds.

30:36Laura calls Clint, and he's like, oh, my god, so choked

30:40up trying to answer that phone call.

30:42Well, not even just that, but I love how they did the birds.

30:45The birds.

30:46I love the birds of it all.

30:47You love the birds.

30:48I love the birds.

30:49I like a good bird every now and-- unless it's a pigeon.

30:51I don't want to see any pigeons.

30:53Yo, I'm with you on that.

30:54I'm done with pigeons.

30:56If they opened the window, and they saw pigeons outside,

30:59I would resnap and be like--

31:01I think I don't like pigeons, because they don't fear us.

31:03They don't fear us, especially a city pigeon.

31:06If I open the window, and I was like, it's beautiful.

31:08They're back.

31:09And I saw just a city pigeon.

31:10The take away from this episode is rats and pigeons.

31:12Let's bring everyone back but the pigeons.

31:14Yeah, OK, so the pigeons.

31:16Now, if we put the gauntlet on the table, would you feel you

31:22should snap or I should snap?

31:24Oh, you can do it.

31:25Oh, I don't like how you answered that so quickly.

31:27No, - You're can do it.

31:28Now that I asked, I'm kind of regretting that.

31:30You can totally do it.

31:31I believe in you.

31:32Yeah, you know what?

31:33Maybe--

31:34I'll stand over there.

31:35Maybe I don't believe in myself.

31:37How about that? - Oh.

31:38Yeah, maybe I don't believe in myself.

31:39So high and mighty two seconds ago.

31:41So where do we go from there?

31:43Thanos arrives.

31:44That he does.

31:45Thanos arrives.

31:46Battle of Earth begins.

31:48We have so many epic moments where

31:53Tony is using the power of Thor's lightning,

31:56and this insane moment.

31:57And Thanos does the Thanos-copter moment.

31:59Thanos-copter.

32:00When I was rewatching this moment as Mjölnir starts

32:05to hover above the ground, it's like I

32:07could like phantom hear all of the cheers in the movie theater.

32:12I knew it.

32:13But you hear the crunch of Stormbreaker in Thor's chest,

32:18and you're like, oh, no.

32:19And then the soap on the rope comes back.

32:22The soap on the rope comes back, and you get it.

32:25And I'll tell you, Cap has looked like he's

32:28used this thing before.

32:29Oh, definitely.

32:30When Thor goes to sleep, Cap is practicing.

32:33He's giggling on his way into his room.

32:36And he's just like, hehe hehe hehe.

32:38He knows how to be a spy.

32:39Yeah, he knows exactly what he's doing.

32:41Yeah, he had those moves down.

32:44He was summoning lightning and like, my god, that first swoop.

32:50I mean, it's perfection.

32:51It felt good.

32:52It was a really, really sweet, earned moment for the fans.

32:56And I don't think I can ever get over--

32:59I would rewatch the videos that people

33:02took secretly in the theater as they started to explode.

33:06Yeah.

33:07It's just so cool that we got to experience that.

33:10Oh, dude, first of all, don't take videos, but--

33:14But thank you to whoever did.

33:16The ones that were like--

33:17I've seen compilations of Avengers

33:20Endgame audience moments, and I watch them every single time.

33:23I'm not swiping away for one second.

33:25I might watch them twice, maybe even three times,

33:27because it just transports you back.

33:31That's what you want.

33:32And the fact that it doesn't even end there.

33:34You have this moment of like, oh, my god, all hope is lost.

33:37Yes

33:38And then a little crackle of sparkle.

33:42Well, was, at any point, after the snap,

33:45to bring everyone back?

33:47Were you even thinking where are they?

33:50Or were you just so inundated with what was happening that it

33:52didn't even cross your mind?

33:53So let me tell you, I started crying on minute five--

33:58- Of the whole movie? - Yeah.

33:58Gotcha.

33:59My whole body was tensed.

34:01I think my pants kind of melted into the seat.

34:04It was just not fun to be in my body.

34:08I remember my head was getting so hot.

34:10I couldn't feel anything.

34:11Everything was buzzing.

34:12And then the portals.

34:14I'm just sobbing and laughing, and I'm so happy.

34:18And you could just feel everybody in the theater.

34:21There was like a string that connected all of us.

34:24We were breathing at the same time

34:26and laughing at the same time.

34:28Like, how special.

34:29As it's happening.

34:30So like these portals start opening.

34:32First, we see Okoye, Shuri and T'Challa,

34:36and then Sam flies over them, and then

34:38it's just like, oh, oh, whoa.

34:42And it's such a like, this is where I really

34:46started to get emotional.

34:47And I'm going to keep it together here as best as I can.

34:50No, no, don't.

34:50These.

34:51The properties, the characters, they

34:54have been such a sense of joy and relief and wonder and heart

35:00and imagination and creativity for-- not just the duration

35:04of the movies, but the comics, going back

35:08to way before both of our time.

35:10So seeing that, it felt like you were

35:13being hugged by the history of what

35:16was going on in front of you.

35:17And you know what got me?

35:19I'm not kidding.

35:21A few months prior to this movie, Stanley had passed away.

35:24Yeah, and I sit there, and I'm watching this.

35:27And I just feel this sense of the pride

35:31that Stan Lee and all of the Marvel team

35:34and all of the great writers and artists

35:37and everyone just watching this stuff

35:41happen that they have devoted their life to in front

35:43for a audience like that.

35:45It is honestly overwhelming.

35:47Truly, this film is a labor of love.

35:49And I'm so touched and so moved still thinking about it now.

35:55We've come so far from Endgame and the fact

35:58that we could just drop right back in rewatching

36:00this movie with this mindset of like, oh, my god,

36:04I was a part of that.

36:05I watched this for the first time with the world.

36:08And even if we weren't physically holding our hands,

36:11we were holding our feelings together,

36:13and it was just so beautiful.

36:14Well, like the sense of community that that created

36:17was so intense.

36:18And honestly, this is what these movies do to people,

36:23is they make them feel loved, seen, accepted, included,

36:28and the swell of all that happening.

36:30And then just the splash page of it all happening

36:34where we finally get our first.

36:36Give it to me.

36:37Give me the line.

36:39Cap finally says it.

36:40He looks over, and he says, Avengers--

36:43Assemble.

36:45[THEME MUSIC]

36:55Everyone screamed, dude.

36:57- Yeah. - Everyone.

36:58It's crazy.

36:59I think the first person you hear screaming is Thor,

37:02and the audience screamed with him.

37:05I could have stood up and started running.

37:07I don't think any movie ever again will have that kind

37:10of hold over an audience.

37:12So much happens in this last battle.

37:14Oh, my god, yeah.

37:14Tony and Peter hug.

37:16Sorry, we keep getting away from this.

37:17I love that that's the first place that you start,

37:19because everyone else would be like, you know, there's Ant-Man,

37:22or a giant man at this point, is punching Leviathans and stuff.

37:26But yeah, the first is the hug.

37:27That is the emotional.

37:28It was so sweet, because Tony never hugs him.

37:32Yeah, I think that's the callback

37:35again to the line where--

37:36And he's like, oh, this is nice.

37:37He's like, I'm not--

37:38I'm just opening the door for you.

37:40And then we get Carol blasting through Sanctuary.

37:43And then, of course, that final moment with Tony and Thanos

37:48where the nanobots secretly just steal all the infinity stones.

37:52Are you kidding me?

37:53That is so smart.

37:54I mean, again, we're getting, like we saw in Infinity War,

37:59we just were like--

38:02what's the word I'm looking for--

38:04conditioned to be like, little win,

38:06big loss, little win, big loss.

38:07Oh, yeah.

38:08So in this moment when you're getting--

38:10it's following the same rhythm.

38:12You know what I'm saying?

38:13It's following the same--

38:15Emotional seesaw.

38:16Yeah, so you're like, whoa, oh, whoa, oh.

38:20So you feel that anxiety that you

38:22felt at the end of Infinity War, and the stakes

38:25are higher at this point.

38:26But also you felt like you were being conducted

38:28by the filmmakers, too.

38:30Because to go from such roar of applause of Cap lifting

38:34Mjölnir the portals, and then pin drop silence

38:39during Tony's sacrifice.

38:41And I am Iron Man.

38:52What a perfect ultimate sacrifice.

38:56He wasn't just saving the universe,

38:59but also the fact that he was doing it for his family.

39:01And at the end, Pepper was like--

39:03the first thing she says.

39:04She's like, we're going to be OK.

39:06You can rest now.

39:07Yeah, I mean, the first few people that see him.

39:09It's Rhodey. - Peter.

39:10It's Peter.

39:11Peter's sobbing.

39:12And it's Pepper, and it's like--

39:13those are the ones that like, you're learning through

39:16their emotions on screen.

39:18That's where the connection is with those people,

39:21because you feel the wind and you see people starting to dust

39:25away, and you're like, OK, yes, wow.

39:28Oh, but at what cost?

39:30Yeah, and it's just so amazing that they had the guts

39:33to pull the plug on Tony.

39:36His death gave meaning to the entire Infinity Saga,

39:40to his entire arc and to so many other people's arcs, as we see

39:44in Spider-Man: Far From Home.

39:47It's just the perfect cap, and he became the person that he

39:51always had the potential to be.

39:53And again, that's the hero gig.

39:56Part of the journey is the end.

39:58I love that we get just the closure of all of this--

40:02Yeah, Tony's funeral.

40:03Oh, I mean--

40:05Like, the fact that they even brought Harley back.

40:07Yeah, that was cool.

40:08There were so many really sweet moments.

40:10We see Nick Fury and Carol.

40:12Everybody showed up, and god, you just feel

40:16like you're mourning with them.

40:17You feel like you're mourning with them,

40:19but also you're proud of them, which is so funny to say

40:22about the creative team and the actors

40:26and everyone that made all of this come together.

40:28But you have felt like you went through the battle.

40:31You were along the ride for the emotional roller coaster.

40:34So as Tony rests, there is a sense of like,

40:38now I can take a deep breath.

40:39OK, I want to use my summoning powers one more time,

40:42but I'm a little nervous.

40:43- One last time. - Yeah.

40:45All right, OK.

40:45Yeah, but I'm shy.

40:47I mean, you've done it so many times now.

40:49But it's the big guy.

40:51There's many, many of those.

40:52No, like, my favorite one.

40:54Oh, oh, you can do it.

40:56OK, RDJ, no, yeah, hi.

41:01So I would like to know what made you want to come back

41:04to the MCU for this role as Victor Von doom,

41:07especially after such an epic sendoff in Endgame?

41:11Iman, nice to see you, sweetie.

41:13What brought me back was the opportunity to redefine

41:17the genre of superhero movies.

41:19So that's a tall order.

41:21And you know Mr. Feige, you know the group, we love a challenge.

41:25And we figured, wow, let's really mix it up and see if we

41:28can get ourselves excited.

41:29Because if we're excited, the audience will soon follow.

41:34That's a lot of power.

41:35That's a lot of power to be able to throw to something like that.

41:38Good for you.

41:38Oh, my god.

41:39I mean, great power, man.

41:42We will get to the Avengers Doomsday of it

41:45all in a few minutes.

41:46Before we get there, though, I love

41:47doing these little superlatives for you.

41:49Yeah, it's become a bit of a tradition.

41:51We've done MVP a couple times.

41:54Why don't we start somewhere different?

41:55Which of the portal entrances was your favorite?

41:58Oh, Howard the Duck was in there, wasn't he?

42:01He was.

42:02Yeah, that's the one.

42:05Of all the ones, that's the one.

42:08OK, you know what?

42:09I'm just glad they thought of him.

42:10I'm not going to yuck your yum.

42:11If you liked it--

42:12Thank you.

42:13Then all the power to you.

42:14Why, who would be yours?

42:15I mean, oof, there's so many to pick from.

42:21I loved seeing the Asgardians, because it's not

42:24like they were set up as like--

42:25Valkyrie on that Pegasus, are you kidding me?

42:27Yeah, fun fact.

42:29This movie was one of the reasons my first daughter's

42:32name was almost Valkyrie.

42:34- Almost. - Almost, yeah.

42:35I mean, we went through a couple different--

42:37That was almost a story.

42:38(LAUGHING) Yeah, we went through a couple

42:40different names, but that's why just seeing the Asgardians

42:43show up.

42:44And then you see the people from the Sanctum Santorum.

42:47There's so much, but I did like seeing that.

42:49Because I didn't even remember--

42:51I know we saw the Asgardians earlier,

42:52but it just felt like they got a thing to do over there.

42:54They're running their own thing.

42:55They're not going to show up.

42:57And boy, did they?

42:58And the line between--

43:00the interaction between Strange and Wong, where he's like,

43:03is that everybody?

43:04He's like, you wanted more?

43:05Yeah, loved it.

43:06Crazy.

43:07There are quite a lot of comedy moments in this film

43:10that I'm so surprised that they still manage to fit those in.

43:13One of my favorites is when Tony interacts

43:16with Rocket the first time.

43:18This man is emaciated.

43:20He's angry, he's grieving, and he still

43:23has time to quip and be like, for a second, I

43:26literally just thought you were a build a bear.

43:28- Yeah. - And that was like, maybe I am.

43:29It was also nice to see Thor supporting Korg and not allowing

43:34him to get cyberbullied.

43:35We never went through the NoobMaster69--

43:37Yeah, NoobMaster69.

43:40If you had asked me to put together

43:41words to find in any of these movies,

43:43NoobMaster69 absolutely not have been there.

43:48Absolutely not.

43:49Do you have a favorite time travel moment in the time heist?

43:53Ooh, that's a good question.

43:55Or old Steve, which we never talked about.

43:58Can we talk about old Steve?

43:59You know what? Forget that question.

44:00Rip it up. Tear it out.

44:01Throw it at the screen.

44:02Who cares?

44:03Old Steve, I'm looking at you.

44:05Who are you?

44:06Where'd you come from?

44:07You don't make sense.

44:07Oh, you're getting angry about it.

44:10Old Steve is such a conundrum to me.

44:12Yeah, who knows when and where he's from.

44:15Especially now that we know who Cap in Doomsday is.

44:18So is this him surviving Doomsday,

44:22and then he goes back--

44:23I'll be honest with you.

44:24I'll be honest with you.

44:26I know someone that looks like Cap is in Doomsday.

44:28I don't know what we're getting in that movie.

44:30So who knows if we're going to get answers to who

44:33this person is or anything?

44:35Well, this is what-- they don't tell me anything.

44:37You're so PR trained.

44:38I mean, but they don't tell me anything.

44:40So I have to sit there, and I have to use the tools

44:42that they have given me, which has not been much.

44:44You understand?

44:45Yeah, speak for yourself.

44:47Avengers Doomsday, we're talking about it.

44:49What, from Avengers Endgame and the Avengers Endgame re-release,

44:53which is coming out-- what do you think

44:54we're going to take from this movie

44:56and bring with us into Avengers Doomsday?

44:58You had to give me the question.

45:01I mean, I can answer it.

45:02Answer it.

45:02I mean, I feel like the obvious would

45:04be the Thanos-Doom parallels.

45:06I think Thanos is such a strong villain and so much

45:11of that comes out of Josh Brolin's performance.

45:13And so giving RDJ the wheel on, honestly, my favorite villain

45:20in comic history.

45:22Doctor Doom means a lot to me as a reader and as a fan.

45:25And I have so much faith in him as a performer,

45:30so I'm very curious to see how that comes out.

45:32Because I think, on the page, Thanos

45:34could have fell flat in a lot of places,

45:37but because of that performance, it's so strong

45:39and so memorable and so iconic.

45:41I imagine that we will see a line drawn from this movie

45:45to Avengers Doomsday with the line, you mess with time,

45:49it tends to mess back.

45:50Because I mean, that seems to be Doom's thing.

45:54And it's his thing.

45:56Everyone's got a thing.

45:57Doom's thing is time.

45:58I imagine that that line is going to-- as we had heard lines

46:01previously, the suit of armor around the world and Avengers

46:04Age of Ultron-- this is going to be

46:07the one where we're going to look

46:08at it and just be like, time--

46:10Especially with Loki coming back after his show.

46:13Yeah, we saw Loki in the trailer.

46:15We saw the little TVA card.

46:17Yeah, I'm excited.

46:19I'm very, very excited.

46:20All right, so we are closing the chapter on our rewatch

46:23of the Infinity Saga.

46:24Thank you so much for joining us.

46:26As we revisit these five films.

46:28We truly had the time of our lives.

46:30Yeah, it's been awesome.

46:31Such a pleasure.

46:32And yeah, I just hope you guys all enjoy the Avengers

46:35Endgame Encore in theaters.

46:37And then very soon, December 18th, Avengers Doomsday.

46:41Oh, I will be seated.

46:43I will have no drink.

46:44And I may or may not be holding the hands of everyone around me.

46:46And a soap on a rope.

46:47Definitely.

46:48And a horse in the throat.

46:50I will be prepared.

46:51That's all you need to know.

46:52Thank you, guys.

46:53Take it easy.
