Intro

0:00This fight versus you and Il Japor was

0:02an absolute banger. Wow. Just just wow.

0:06>> He wasn't prepared for what happened

0:07that night. One of the biggest mistakes

0:08I've ever made is trying to replicate a

0:10perfect performance the next time. And I

0:12guarantee that's what he was trying to

0:13he's trying to replicate. That's why

0:15he's having the same parties. You know,

0:16they're probably having the same

0:18>> and the same.

0:19>> It's a mistake.

0:21>> How do you like this match up between

0:22Armen and Ruffy?

0:24>> I hope Armen gets hit hard.

0:25>> You hope he gets hit hard?

0:26>> Yeah, it' be fun to see

0:28>> Armen. He's been doing so much to get

0:30the opportunity to fight for the belt.

0:31>> She also been doing so much to not be

0:33able to fight for

0:34>> you think so. Well, we all make our own

0:36bed. Come on, don't be crazy.

0:37>> After you fought Patty Pilip, you have

0:39that deep bone bruise.

0:41>> My hands hurt though. It's crazy. My

0:43hands are I don't understand. My hands

0:44have never hurt.

0:45>> Well, the thing people don't realize,

0:46even though you're whooping his ass, it

0:48hurts. And you've had a long career.

0:50>> Yep. And I've loved every second of it.

0:59Oh, it's 15 TIME WORLD CHAMPION DEBRIS

1:04JOHNSON. You're listening to the mighty.

2:21What's going ladies and gentlemen?

Welcome Justin Gaethje!

2:22Welcome back to another episode of the

2:24MightCast and we are joined by the

2:26lightweight champion of the world Justin

2:30Gatei. How are you doing today, champ?

2:33>> I am doing great. Loving loving life.

2:36Life is amazing.

How has Life Changed Since Becoming Champ?

2:37>> Good man. You're busy. You are an

2:39extremely busy man. I was talking to

2:41your assistant and she was says we can't

2:43do this day. We can't do this day. How

2:45has life changed since you become the

2:47champion? Because we're going to talk

2:48about that fight. It was I think it was

2:50fight of the year. As of right now, it's

2:52fight of the year. But how's your life

2:54changed becoming a champion?

2:56>> Nothing has changed because every single

2:58time after I fight, I go on golfing

3:00extravaganza.

3:01>> Oh, so you golfing right now? That's

3:02what you're doing. It's it's nothing to

3:03do with mixed martial arts. It's

3:05golfing.

3:06>> That's how I recover. Yeah. After every

3:08single fight. So I make the UFC take me

3:11to these fights as guest fighters, you

3:12know, interact with fans at night and I

3:14golf in the morning. So it's been great.

3:16>> Wow. So I I sitting here thinking you

3:19become the world champion. I'm like,

3:20"Oh, Justin, we need you over here for

3:22this photo shoot. Justin, we need you

3:24for this movie shoot." He goes, "Nah,

3:26I'm just [ __ ] golfing. I just want to

3:28golf and that's it. And then I'll get

3:29back to fighting."

3:31>> Golfing for money though. Always.

3:32>> Oh, you golfing for money? How much you

3:34win in these golf tournaments?

3:37>> Not tournaments. I bet people.

3:38>> Oh [ __ ]

3:39>> I won like I was up like 5,000 last

3:42week.

3:43Uh, I'm make I'm hustling.

3:47>> I saw you. Do you do Do you be hustling

3:49Daniel Corme?

3:52>> I don't have to hustle him. He's

3:54>> But he cheats. Daniel's Daniel's more of

3:57a content guy. It's like, let's just say

3:59we're betting money, but let's not

4:01really bet.

4:01>> So So you either have to I've said it

4:03many times, you either lose a friend and

4:05fight him or let a friend cheat you.

4:07>> And so it's those are

4:09>> So you saying you saying Daniel Corman

4:11ain't good for his money? He says, "Oh

4:13man, we're going to bet." And then when

4:14you beat him, he's like, "I'm broke. I'm

4:16broke. I can't pay you."

4:18>> Well, the most part, he'll pay, but it's

4:20like pulling teeth.

4:20>> Ah, I hate I hate when you do that. You

4:22know, somebody comes to the table like

4:24they got big guns, they got big wallets,

4:26and then next thing you know, it's time

4:27it's time to front the bill and they got

4:29T-Rex arms. They they doing this.

4:31>> He's He's far from the worst. He's far

4:33from the worst, though.

4:34>> He pays for most.

4:35>> Shame. Shame. Okay, let's talk about

4:37this fight, though. This fight versus

Ilia Topuria vs Justin Gaethje BREAKDOWN

4:39you and Il Japor was an absolute [ __ ]

4:42banger. Like I told you face to face. I

4:45was super impressed. I was impressed

4:47when you beat you know Patty Pimlet you

4:50know.

4:50>> Yep.

4:51>> Wow. Just just wow.

4:54>> The the the after watching you fight and

4:57then I was listening to you and Trevor

4:58Whitman talk about like you know we

4:59waited for Ili Deor to turn this way and

5:02then we would tack his shoulder. We

5:03would tack his shoulder and then we knew

5:05he would get heavy on that back foot.

5:07How much studying did you guys do in

5:10order to see that? Because when I see

5:11it, I'm thinking he's doing a good job

5:13crossing the void, getting to the

5:15position he needs to get to in order to

5:17in order to hurt his opponents. But you

5:19guys, you know, first off, you're the

5:22bigger dog. You you you took it to him.

5:24You got hurt, but you took it to him.

5:26Talk to me how much studying went into

5:28it, and then once you studied all that,

5:30how long did it take you to see that

5:32opportunity to present itself?

5:34Yeah, I guess the best explanation for

5:36you to like understand would be like um

5:38his feet never change rhythms. He never

5:41changes rhythms with feet. It's always

5:43pop pop pop and it's forward or

5:45backwards. He's very rarely moving like

5:47lateral.

5:48>> Um and so that's that's how he fights.

5:50And so ultimately it's like about timing

5:52his feet and interrupting uh the game

5:55plan was to interrupt his feet, you

5:56know, especially when it's it's so

5:59um constant, you know, it's very easy to

6:02predict and I've never seen him alter

6:05from that and start to move lateral and

6:07start to

6:09>> not be for in forward or backwards, you

6:12know, in or out. Um, and so really it

6:15was just about moving left. You know,

6:16he's so pointed and so everyone's always

6:19running away from his right hand, but

6:20ultimately that's putting you into his

6:23power. As much as that doesn't make

6:24sense because he wants you, he's very

6:26pointed. So like the more you move here,

6:28the more he's ready to drive and run

6:30that way at all points. As soon as he

6:32has to switch this way, like that's a

6:34whole different ballgame. You have to

6:35square now you're squared up. You have

6:37to reset your feet in order to take off

6:39and go sprinting in that direction. And

6:41so I was really trying to square him up

6:43uh to his right hand so that you know

6:46and go towards his right hand and really

6:48u be methodical about controlling space

6:51there. And obviously he's going to throw

6:53that right hand but it's not going to be

6:56um again he's never going to change his

6:58beats up.

6:59>> He doesn't do it.

7:00>> That's that's fascinating you say that

7:02because usually you know when you fight

7:04you want to run away from somebody's

7:06power. Even when you fought Patty

7:07Pimlet, you circled into his power and

7:09you're like, he doesn't hit hard, so I'm

7:11willing to take that exchange and almost

7:13sounds like you did the same thing with

7:14Il Deor. you were circling into his

7:16power to square him up and that's where

7:20you were able to basically beat him to

7:23the punch. Beat him to you know your

7:27>> my jab was so effective but even with

7:29when I wasn't jabbing if he was throwing

7:31a right hand I just had to extend here

7:33and he's he's not going to get inside

7:36that inside that arm. So, I mean, that

7:38was uh that was like especially if I'm

7:39moving left, you know, and then he he's

7:42thinking he's coming over this way, but

7:44I'm too far away. And then this arm is

7:46really like stopping all momentum that

7:48of him driving. And it's really his

7:49second and third shots are the most um

7:52dangerous. And getting pushed against

7:54the cage is something that I could not

7:55do. And obviously when I did, I suffered

7:57for you know, I got dropped

7:59>> with with body shots. And um you know, I

8:01really every competition is a battle of

8:04momentum. my soul momentum in the first

8:06three seconds with a very stiff jab.

8:08>> And you know, he really he I I said it

8:11before, I'll say it again. He

8:14um made terrible mistakes, you know,

8:16emotionally when it comes to

8:18understanding what what we're doing here

8:21>> and paid for it.

8:22>> And what what do you mean he made

8:24mistakes emotionally? cuz I feel the

8:26only thing he from my step when I'm

8:28watching him like when he hurt you he

8:30took you down he passed guard he almost

8:32had the uh the tri not triangle he

8:34almost had the armbar and you know he

8:36was trying to finish the fight but you

8:38say he making a he made a mistake

8:40emotionally what do you mean by that

8:42>> I'm I'm referring to the the 12 weeks

8:45before the fight those emotional

8:48mistakes in preparation and and so he

8:50wasn't prepared for he wasn't prepared

8:52for what happened that night

8:53>> and there's no re and that's that's his

8:54fault Oh, you know, because he didn't

8:58think that it was possible for someone

8:59to to to be there with him for that long

9:02or or whatever it was, he forgot who he

9:05was and how dangerous his game is and

9:07that every fight is every fight is so

9:10individual and nothing matters. Uh the

9:12one of the biggest mistakes I've ever

9:13made is trying to replicate uh a perfect

9:16performance the next time and it takes

9:18away from the moment that is this

9:20moment. And I guarantee that's what he

9:22was trying he was trying to replicate.

9:23That's why he's having the same parties,

9:25you know, they're probably having the

9:26same speed

9:27>> and it's a mistake.

9:30>> Yeah. Yeah. Well, the biggest thing is

9:32like when you're talking about his feet,

9:34his rhythm, like when you see him hit

9:35pads, it's like it's

9:39Have you ever seen Have you ever seen

9:41him slip a left hand?

9:42>> No. No.

9:44>> He doesn't really slip. Yeah. He's

9:45usually

9:46>> like this.

9:48>> Yeah.

9:48>> He goes one, two, goes what?

9:50>> Yeah.

9:51>> He just doesn't want two. like he

9:53doesn't go under it like

9:55>> he's not and this is not and this sounds

9:58mean and critical.

9:59>> No, no, we're we're we're we're

10:01of course this could be broken down into

10:03the but I'm just talking about in

10:04general. Yeah.

10:05>> Like multiple times my coach before the

10:07fight were like check out him going

10:09under his left hand.

10:11>> Yeah. Yeah.

10:11>> I was like that's that's awesome.

10:14No, you're this is this is we're we're

10:16basically speaking factual things that

10:18we see because when I see him hit pads,

10:20I love how he does it because his rhythm

10:21and his cadence and his hands speed

10:25up, but his feet don't move. And when

10:28you brought up, he never moves lateral.

10:30It's usually he gets to the spot where

10:31he needs to and then he lets his hands

10:33go and like you said, it's a third or

10:34four punch that kind of does damage. And

10:38he's so used to getting to that spot

10:39when he fought Max Holler, when he

10:41fought Charles Olivera, when he fought

10:42Ryan Hall, when he fights these guys, he

10:44gets that spot and he lets the comic

10:46shoes go. So for you to pick out, you

10:49and Trevor to pick out that key detail

10:53that I didn't even see because for him,

10:55he gets that spot and he's always been

10:57successful. So him recreating those

10:59parties, him having the same mindset and

11:01yeah, he doesn't go boom and roll under

11:04boom and roll and slip and move and move

11:06like that. It's mostly bah. It's the the

11:10cadence. So for you to pick that out,

11:13I'm amazed. Even when you said it about

11:15just Patty Pil, I was amazed. You're

How Gaethje Developed His Unique Style

11:17like, I'm you're the only fighter when I

11:19sit there and I and I look at how you

11:21fight, I'm like, I don't know how Justin

11:23is able to get away circling into the

11:25power, but you're the only fighter that

11:28I see does it all the time. And I'm just

11:30blown away by it. I'm blown away that

11:32you can do it.

11:34>> Uh yeah. I mean, so here's a here's a

11:37crazy um thing. So when I I wrestled

11:39Jordan BS two times, and he has the

11:41fastest double leg ever. So, like if

11:43you're sitting at space, he you will

11:46never win um that game. He's going to

11:49put his he put his head to my chest.

11:50Couldn't take a deep breath for like

11:52three weeks after I wrestled him the

11:53first time. The second time I wrestled

11:54him, my coach was like, "We're going to

11:56take a shot and we're going to just go

11:58we're going to shoot into tie-ups.

12:01>> That way, we're never wrestling at this

12:03space." So, we're going to shoot and

12:04he's going to think we're taking a shot.

12:05So, he's going to go to his heels. Boom.

12:07Straight into a tie-up to my feet. And

12:09it was very similar to what my plan was

12:11here is his forward momentum is so so uh

12:16overpowering that I had to stop that

12:17somehow. So that level change. So I was

12:19really just shooting into a into a

12:22collar tie and ultimately it started to

12:24work and uh MMA is different. The space

12:28actually helps to move better. But yeah,

12:30so I think I used um I remember just

12:32Jordan, you know, being so fast from so

12:34from so far out and I was like, I know

12:36this kid's going to be so fast, so I

12:38have to get I have to have something to

12:39be able to get there instead of to get

12:41away from it. And so yeah, that was

12:43something I used. And yeah, I mean, my

12:45coach is a genius. I can't tell you how

12:46smart this guy is. I wish you could come

12:48train with him once. You've never you

12:50would you you'll after that you'll be

12:51like, I've never been coached like that.

14:37Now, let us get back to our guest.

Trevor Wittman is a GENIUS

14:40Mhm. Yeah. It's I He is one of the great

14:44minds and for you, you've been with

14:46Trevor your whole entire career,

14:47correct?

14:48>> Well, yeah. 2010.

14:49>> Yeah. And I feel when you see an athlete

14:51who's been with their coach for the

14:54entirety of his of his career as an

14:57athlete, you kind of grow together.

14:59Meaning that you've you've had some

15:01wars. the wars with Eddie Alvarez, the

15:03wars with, you know, Charles Olivera,

15:06Dustin Py, back forth, you know, and I

15:09feel like you are starting to come in

15:10your own where you're starting to

15:11understand and peak, right? A lot of

15:14people peak at different times in their

15:16career, but I feel like you're starting

15:18to peak where you're putting things

15:19together. Not that you weren't before,

15:21but I feel like you guys are starting to

15:23like, okay, we understand the game plan.

15:25We understand what we do well. We

15:27understand we have that dog in us. We

15:28can take damage. We can deliver D. You

15:30look at all the fights, you do pictures

15:33side by side where you fought Tony

15:34Ferguson. You're just you're you're

15:36[ __ ] hitting you're destroying

15:38people's faces.

15:38>> Damage.

15:39>> I Yeah, the damage. And I think you guys

15:41are starting to peak together.

15:44>> Yeah. I mean, it's really ultimately

15:47comes down to what is what is your why?

15:49And my coach has been such a a

15:54believer of that concept like why are

15:56you doing you know why are you doing

15:57something? and my why has changed

15:59multiple times um you know on this

16:01journey and it's just the the experience

16:04you know the experience the failures the

16:06wins the losses the trying to repeat a

16:08perfect performance the thinking I'm

16:10better than everybody and forgetting how

16:13you know ultimately that this is a

16:15dangerous sport it's a crazy sport and

16:17there's a little bit of chance and luck

16:18involved and if you forget that or try

16:22to hide from that then it's it's scary

16:25cuz on the walk you're going to be like

16:26oh [ __ ] I'm about to gamble.

16:29>> And if you're not ready for it, you're

16:30not ready. So, yeah, it's um mentally um

16:34it's been such a such an asset to, you

16:36know, come from wrestling and and to

16:37have been in one-on-one situations my

16:39whole life, but to have my family and to

16:40have a, you know, just unconditional

16:44love and support. Win or lose, they

16:45don't give a They don't care if I win or

16:47lose. They love when I win. Um and they

16:49love me when I lose. So, yeah, it's just

16:51uh it's just a crazy ride. and and the

Is Gaethje Going to Fight Again?

16:53fact and the fact that you did on the

16:55White House lawn. You do there's a

16:57beautiful picture of you doing a

16:58backflip on the White House lawn and I'm

17:01like I sat back and I was like guys I

17:04think this is it. I think Justin goes on

17:06a world tour of you know the PGA. He

17:09retires from mixed martial arts. He

17:11tries to become a world champion in

17:13professional golf association. I I I'm

17:16not I'm not going to lie to you. I think

17:18I think you know I don't know what your

17:19why is now but where are you leaning

17:22towards because I know we talked about a

17:23little bit you you talked about it a

17:25little bit say like yeah I don't know if

17:26I'm going to continue to fight if I'm

17:29>> so I've I've had 78 different answers so

17:31I'm going to go number 79.

17:32>> Okay. Okay.

17:34>> Um I fought twice this year.

17:37>> Yep.

17:38>> I I have uh deep bone bruise in my knee.

17:41I can't punch with my hands still. So I

17:43really need to recover. Um, and so I I

17:46know for a fact I will not be fighting

17:48again this year. I do know I just

17:50performed better than I've ever

17:51performed. And

17:52>> you know, statistically that shouldn't

17:55have happened. The math doesn't work.

17:57Blah blah blah blah blah. Um, and I have

18:01a family. I've always trusted and told

18:03my parents, my brothers, my sister, my

18:05my coaches that I need them to have a

18:08conversation with me whenever this time

18:11needs to come because I have to stay in

18:13the fight the whole time. You know,

18:15mentally, physically, I have to believe

18:17that I'm capable and at all times. And

18:20when I'm not, I I won't understand and I

18:22won't be aware. Only the people around

18:24me will be aware. And so, I really rely

18:26on them and lean on them to to help me

18:28through this choice. I think it's a big

18:30choice. Um, but I do think that I am a

18:33business. I do think that I need to

18:35approach this as a business and and a

18:37business, you know, mindset. And I think

18:38I need to put pros and cons. I need to

18:40have different conversations. I need to

18:43um see what what life looks like on both

18:46sides. And so, you know, I haven't made

18:48a decision. I don't know right now.

18:50>> Well, it's crazy that you still have

Gaethje Fought Ilia and Paddy While Hurt?!

18:52that deep bone, Bruce, because a lot of

18:53people don't realize this. me. You after

18:55you fought Patty Pilman, we did a

18:57celebrity sweat game playing football

18:59and you chose not to play. You were

19:01coaching. You were coaching me on

19:02defensive side. Gave me a lot of support

19:04cuz they never let me pay. They never

19:05let me play [ __ ] offense. Pisses me

19:07off. Everybody wants to play offense.

19:09Everyone wants to get the [ __ ]

19:10ball and score. No one want to play

19:12defense. But

19:13>> you didn't play that game because you

19:15had that deep bone bruise. the fact that

19:18you went through the training camp with

19:19that injury and you put on

19:21>> training camp. It happened on Christmas

19:23day

19:24>> and it's just uh it's just a bone inema

19:27in in the tip of my fibula. It's like

19:29all the way in the bone marrow and Yeah.

19:32>> Wow.

19:33>> It's just crazy how long it takes to

19:34heal.

19:35>> Well, I mean, you're not Well, it takes

19:37so long to heal because you're being so

19:39active, right? Like

19:40>> Well, then I pushed through I pushed

19:41into straight into another camp. So,

19:42yeah. I mean, exactly. So, right now

19:44it's feeling good.

19:45>> Good, good, good. But it's crazy. It's

19:47crazy. My hands are I don't understand.

19:48My hands have never hurt. Uh my wrist

19:50like the joint right here. I don't

19:52understand. I There's a picture of me

19:53hitting him and my wrist like breaking

19:55like that and it had to have

19:57>> done some nerve something in my nerve

19:58some nerve damage in my wrist. I don't

20:00know. It's crazy. And then I was choking

20:02out Hollyiz and I hurt his hip. So

20:04>> yeah. Well, the thing people don't

20:05realize even though you're whooping his

20:07ass, it it hurts when you whoop people's

20:10asses, right? or when you punch when you

20:12punch people, when you elbow people, you

20:13kick them, you knee them, it does damage

20:15to your body and also him. So, you're

20:17inflicting damage and you've had a long

20:19career. I mean, a lot of people, if they

20:21haven't follow your career, you know,

20:23World Series of Fighting, the stuff

20:25before World Series of Fighting. You've

20:27been in the game for a long, long time.

20:30A long time.

20:32>> Yep. Yep. And I've loved every second of

20:34it.

20:39Loved it. You have no idea how much I

20:41enjoy uh the actual fight. Like I love

20:44the environment. I love the chaos.

20:45>> Mhm.

20:46>> Uh I love the recognition, you know. I

20:48love showing off. Um so yeah, it's just

20:50it's been incredible.

Why Didn’t Gaethje Get the Truck From Arman?

20:51>> How come how come you didn't take that

20:52uh that truck from uh Arma? He he bought

20:55you a truck. You didn't want the

20:57>> truck I wanted and he didn't want to

20:58buy. He wanted to buy me a cheap ASS

21:00TRUCK.

21:02>> YOU could have traded that truck in and

21:03got a new one. Or or so the whole

21:05stipulation like you wanted a specific

21:07truck and he didn't want to buy you that

21:08truck. He bought you a cheap truck.

21:09>> I'm going to get the truck that I want.

21:12I'm going to I'm in the I'm in the

21:13process of getting the truck that I

21:14want. And so then when he said that,

21:18I was like, "Cool. I love it. Here's the

21:20truck." And he said, "I already bought a

21:22truck." And I was like, "Well, I don't

21:23want that truck."

21:25>> What truck do you want? Like you you're

21:27you're getting a truck. What are we

21:28talking between two trucks? I'm between

21:30a Dodge TRX SRT or a Ford Velociraptor.

21:36>> So Velociraptor. Okay. So, you know, I

21:39had a a F-150 Roush. My

21:42>> I have a SH Raptor Baja right now.

21:44>> Damn.

21:45>> And I love that thing.

21:46>> Okay. Well, now what we call in

21:49Washington State the Velociraptor is

21:51when you have the Roush package and you

21:53also have the Raptor package, right? So,

21:56it has a suspension and also has a

21:58supercharger for the motor. Is that what

22:00the Velociraptor is? They actually so

22:02they have a so it's like uh like the

22:04Shelby Raptor Baja like so Shelby takes

22:07250 Raptors and they build them out like

22:10you know with their kits with their

22:11suspension with their engine with their

22:13tires with their racks in the back and

22:15then with their all their stickers and

22:17then so like a company that's

22:18Velociraptor somewhere I don't know

22:20where it is but they do their own

22:21package

22:22>> to the to the Raptor and I think you

22:25probably buy it through there or I bet

22:27they put I bet they're on the lots and

22:29they've already been like built out.

22:31>> Gotcha. Gotcha.

22:32>> But I bet the best the most common way

22:35that they get them is you probably order

22:36it.

22:36>> Yeah, cuz it's a special detail thing

22:39that you ask for. The stitching on it is

22:41good, the supercharger, and they got to

22:43make sure they build the transmission

22:44beefy enough. So when you that that's so

22:47much torque if they just throw, you

22:49know, a that's what I think they did

22:50with my wife's truck is that they threw

22:51a rous, you know, supercharger into the

22:54truck and they didn't really beef up the

22:56transmission and so it started to slip

22:57in and then they had that [ __ ] 10th

22:59speed where it's like you're in eighth

23:01gear, ninth gear, sixth gear, and it was

23:03like uh you know, we we got rid of it.

23:05It's a beautiful truck, but

23:06Velociraptor, I can't wait to see it.

23:09>> Yes, same. But but Dodge over there, but

23:12the but Dodge just came out with their

23:14SRT. They brought it back out. So, I'm

23:17actually really excited to check that

23:19out.

23:19>> Okay. So, you're a car. What are you

23:21driving now? Like, don't you got enough

23:22cars or

23:24>> Well, yeah. I'm I'm I think I'm due for

23:26a new truck. I've had I've put 70 and

23:28I'm not due. And this, you know, I don't

23:30have Let me start this off. I don't have

23:33a wife or kids.

23:34>> Yeah. So, you know, I've had I put

23:3770,000 miles on this truck and the

23:40technology since I bought this truck

23:42has, you know, got better and so, you

23:46know, I want a bigger screen.

23:47>> Yeah.

23:47>> And a little bit more power. So, I think

23:49I'm think I'm due for a new truck. But I

23:51also have a shell uh a Lamborghini Urus.

23:54>> Damn.

23:54>> And then I have a And then I have like a

23:56sand buggy, which if I take you in that,

23:59you'll shoot yourself.

24:00>> Wow. Wow. It's home base. will not kill

24:03you, but I will. You will offer.

Does Training at High Altitude Actually Help?

24:05>> Yeah. Is Is Colorado home base for you?

24:07>> Yeah.

24:08>> Okay. So, you've never you've always

24:09trained in Colorado. So, when you're

24:11training Colorado, I

24:11>> lived in I lived in Arizona, moved here

24:13in 2007.

24:14>> Okay. You better hold it. So, when

24:16you're training in Colorado, you're at

24:17that high altitude. Do you notice a

24:19difference when you go to sea level and

24:21fight? Because some people they say that

24:24you get over oxygen like you kind of get

24:28over oxygen to your to your your system

24:31or your blood because it's always so

24:33what I'm getting at is that usually if

24:34I'm going to fight an altitude I'm going

24:36to go there two weeks ahead of time just

24:38to get my body used to lack of oxygen.

24:41But then there's also the reverse side

24:43of it that I've heard is that people who

24:45come down to sea level and they fight

24:48they have over they get too much oxygen

24:51and their body can't process that. Have

24:53you ever had to deal with that before?

24:56>> Oh

24:57I I can't think of a situation in my

24:59life where I would think I have too much

25:01oxygen

25:02>> in my body. But um

25:04>> no I haven't I mean for me it's a mental

25:05thing. I think um I understand the

25:08science of elevation and training, you

25:10know, at in this atmosphere and how much

25:12going down to, you know, like sea level

25:15or or lower elevations

25:17is better for me. And so I use it like

25:19if I'm tired, I know that they're tired

25:21and that's really that's all I use it

25:23for.

25:24>> Like this last fight, it was insane. You

25:26know, we fought outside. It was like 72

25:28degrees. It was a little bit breezy. It

25:29felt good,

25:30>> but it was humid. It was like 70%

25:32humidity. And after the first round, I

25:34was like, "This is not good." Like I am

25:36I was [ __ ] smoked after the first

25:39round. [ __ ] smoked.

25:41>> I was like, "This is not good." And then

25:42luckily he was also smoked. So

25:44>> yeah. Well, I mean, you don't when they

What Was It Like Fighting at the White House?

25:47said the fight was going to be in a

25:48White House salon. We didn't know if

25:50that was going to come true. And then

25:51what was like the buildup to it? Like

25:55your workout rooms, what room was it?

25:57Was it the West Wing, the left wing?

25:59Like you got [ __ ] you know, Barack

26:01Obama and like, you know, JF Kennedy on

26:03the wall. Like it's a totally different

26:05atmosphere from when you're fighting MGM

26:07Med Bay or at the Bell Center. What was

26:11that like warming up in the White House

26:14[ __ ] White House here?

26:15>> So across the street from the White

26:17House, I don't know if it's the

26:18Eisenhower building or the Jefferson

26:20building,

26:21>> but I believe it was the first White

26:22House. And there's a lot of um that's

26:24where all the, you know, senators have

26:27their offices and stuff. And that's

26:28right across there's a parking lot. You

26:30go across the parking lot, you're in the

26:31White House. That's where our locker

26:33rooms were. This one was actually really

26:35unique in that,

26:37>> you know, usually there's two or three

26:38people with a locker room with you. This

26:40was red, this was red corner, blue

26:41corner. And so everybody was in the same

26:44locker room and there was seven finishes

26:47that night and

26:49>> every single person that left my locker

26:51room lost.

26:52>> Damn.

26:53>> And I was like, and you know how it is.

26:55You don't you don't you don't let it you

26:57don't let it you know um affect you but

26:59it's still like there's an energy in the

27:01air environment the battle of momentum

27:04and luckily

27:05>> poke it was beefing with Taporia so they

27:07put him in my locker room

27:09>> instead of so he he's he got the first

27:12win out of our lock and then we got the

27:13last three wins out of our locker room

27:15me Hoke or Hoit

27:17>> um

27:18>> Son and then me. Yeah. But what's crazy

27:21was they pulled me out of my room after

27:23when they when they when Ganon walked

27:26out of my room, they're like, "We're

27:27going to move you from here to a staging

27:29area." And there was no TV and no like I

27:31so I had they went out there and I had

27:33no clue like what was going on with that

27:34fight if it was going long like how many

27:36rounds it was going to go, how it was

27:38going.

27:39>> And I was in a room with

27:40>> like you said like

27:42>> some of the greatest men our country has

27:44ever, you know,

27:46had and they're up on the walls and I'm

27:49in the room. I'm like, do I I can't let

27:50these [ __ ] down. I can't do it.

27:53I can't do it. I got to show up. And I'm

27:55just trying to, you know, stay focused

27:56and not not make it more than it is. Not

27:58make it like, you know, a bigger moment

28:00than what it is because it's just a

28:02fight. But yeah, it was it was crazy. It

28:04was a it was it was a challenge is what

28:06it was. It was great.

28:07>> That's amazing. Okay, you got the

Ruffy vs Arman BREAKDOWN

28:09golfing going on. You had that amazing

28:11fight. Now, when you sit back and you

28:12look at the landscape of the lightweight

28:13division, big fight coming up. You got

28:15Ruffy taking on Armor Shukin. I believe

28:19this is your next, you know, contender,

28:23the next person you will potentially

28:24fight. I don't think we'll see a rematch

28:26with Ilo Deore. I know you've spoken

28:28about that like he needs to go and win

28:30maybe one or two. How do you like this

28:32match up between Armen and Ruffy?

28:36>> I mean, as as a fan as a fan and even as

28:39an athlete that I'm gonna fight these

28:40guys, I'm excited. I think uh is [ __ ]

28:42on a tear right now. And

28:45you know,

28:47his last two fights were like ultimately

28:49like super super impressive, but and I

28:51and I'm a huge fan of Bobby Green, but

28:52he fought Bobby Green and Michael

28:54Chandler, you know, who aren't, you

28:56know,

28:57>> top three in the UFC. So, he h who has

29:00he fought that's in the top

29:03>> um 10.

29:05>> Yeah, I don't have his record in front

29:06of me, but yeah,

29:07>> I do. With with my eyes, it says that

29:09he's he's everything that a contender

29:12is. and has all the skills to pay the

29:14bills that he needs. But this will be

29:16his first ultimate test in the UFC

29:19versus a versus a, you know, a world

29:20class fighter. I think Arvin is world

29:22class

29:23>> and, you know, two different two two

29:25very different stylistic matchups,

29:27styles make matchups. I don't know what

29:28we're going to see. Um,

29:33I mean, most likely Arman's going to

29:36take him down.

29:37>> Mhm.

29:38Well, I think

29:40>> Yeah, I think it's interesting when you

29:41when you look in the match because Ruff

29:43is so good on his feet controlling

29:45distance in and out. Never. It's almost

29:47kind of unpredictable of what strike

29:49he's going to throw.

29:50>> Really hard. I hope Arman gets hit hard.

29:52>> You hope he gets hit hard?

29:54>> Yeah, it' be fun to see.

29:55>> Oh man, why is everybody hate

29:56everybody's hating on man Arman?

29:58>> I don't hate Armen. I just I'd rather

29:59him get hit hard than see him get on top

30:01of him and win. Ah,

30:03>> gotcha, gotcha, gotcha, gotcha. Okay,

30:05that

30:05>> that's the only that's my only

30:06reasoning.

30:08Okay. Well, I this is a question I've

30:10been asking a lot of fights out. I'd be

30:12I'd be so happy.

30:15>> Yeah. Well, I mean, I I think with

30:18Armen, he's been doing so much to get

30:21the opportunity to fight for the belt

30:22and he's been doing the real America

30:24freestyle. He's been doing the indic.

30:26>> He also been doing so much to not be

30:28able to fight for the belt.

30:29>> You think so? Well, I think

30:31>> we all make our own bed. Come on. Don't

30:33be crazy. I don't know all the

30:35logistics, but I know

30:36>> you knew you know he was going to fight

30:38for the bell when he dropped out in that

30:39four.

30:40>> He hurt his back. He hurt his back.

30:42>> Oh, okay. Yeah.

30:43>> Hey. Hey, not everybody's built like

30:45you, Justin. You got deep bone bruise.

30:47Your hands don't hurt. They say, "Hey,

30:49>> so you know the truth is he couldn't he

30:50wasn't going to make weight till he

30:51dropped out." Of course that's true.

30:53>> I hope it's not. I hope it's not.

30:56>> I hope it's not. I I wasn't it was his

30:58back. If it was his back and there was a

31:00medical report on paper with UFC that he

31:04wouldn't be suffering like this.

31:06>> All right. Well, [ __ ] I'm not going to

31:08argue with you here, Justin.

31:08>> Well, I'm just speculating. I don't know

31:10[ __ ] So,

31:12>> I don't I'm totally speculating, but

31:13there's no way that if he was to truly

31:16hurt his back cutting weight, how the

31:18[ __ ] do you do that? Yeah.

31:19>> For one,

31:20>> um I bet maybe his body was shutting

31:23down and he just couldn't make weight,

31:24>> which happens.

31:27Well, you when people say that, I feel,

31:30you know,

31:30>> maybe he was like, "My body is shutting

31:32down and I'm not going to make weight,

31:35but if you were to pay me more money,

31:36then I would push through this and make

31:38and I would make weight." And if someone

31:40ever did that, then I could see them

31:42never getting a championship fight.

There is NO EXCUSE to MISS WEIGHT

31:44>> Yeah. But what I want to talk about

31:46this, I I did my my retirement speech

31:48and I said, "There's no reason why an

31:50athlete should miss weight, right?"

31:51Meaning, I don't think you've ever

31:53missed weight. I've never missed weight.

31:55And I feel if you prepare your body for

31:58something that's going to happen in 8

31:59weeks, short notice fights where it's

32:01like, hey, you're taking this fight in

32:03two weeks, you got to cut 30 lbs.

32:05Obviously, you know, it's [ __ ] insane

32:07to do it. But if you know that you have

32:11to cut a certain amount of weight within

32:138 weeks, if you prepare your body right,

32:15meaning the diet, you drink enough

32:17water, you have a system how you're

32:19going to make it, you're a professional,

32:21I don't think there's a reason I don't

32:23think your body would shut down. I I

32:25don't know. Maybe I'm being naive. It's

32:26never happened to me. I've cut eight and

32:28a half pounds in one day. Um I just

32:31don't Is it a mental thing? I I I

32:34>> I think it's a I think it is a mental

32:36thing. Absolutely. I'll tell you why.

32:37Because Kamaru was cutting weight and

32:40Camaro started he was like three pounds

32:42over still and he was seizing up and

32:44[ __ ] screaming in excruciating pain.

32:46And I was like, I'm going to call Hunter

32:49right now and tell him that this he's

32:50not going to make weight. This has to be

32:51a catchweight. And everyone was like,

32:53you know, we all sat on it and we're

32:55like, no, we literally had to carry him.

32:57He took like a two-hour nap, woke up

33:00[ __ ] mentally prepared and he cut the

33:01weight and he lo, you know, I could not

33:04believe it. But no, I would have quit.

33:07And so, yeah, that's what happens. It's

33:08a mental thing.

33:09>> Yeah, I just like I agree with you. It's

33:12a mental thing because I think me

33:14mentally your body is going to push

33:15through it if you tell it can do it, but

33:17also if you prepare right, if you do the

33:19diet right. Like when I've cut eight,

33:21when I have to cut from 141 to 125, I'm

33:25not fat.

33:26>> I'm not There's nothing I can

33:28>> Nothing to lose.

33:29>> Yeah. I have nothing to lose. Yeah. And

33:31it's like I re I load my body for two

33:33weeks straight. I drink two gallons of

33:35water every single day. And don't get me

33:37wrong, I'm pissing like a racehorse. But

33:39it's the weight I signed a contract to

33:42make. Even when I fight at 135, it was a

33:44lot easier to make it because I wasn't

33:46cut as much weight. But they asked me

33:48goes, "Hey, can you make 125 hydrated?"

33:50And I said, "No, I [ __ ] can't. So,

33:52I'm not gonna make the weight." But you

33:54see all these athletes like, "Oh, I can

33:56make that weight." And then they make

33:57the camp about making the weight instead

33:59of just fighting the weight that you can

34:01make or preparing yourself. So, I think

34:03it's, you know, I agree with you. I

34:05think it's mental. And I think people

34:06just don't prepare their body.

34:08>> Lack of lack of preparation of course

34:09is, I think, a, you know, bigger than,

34:11well, you're only giving up because you

34:13weren't prepared to be here. Yeah. You

34:14know, so one doesn't come without the

34:16other. It's it's a lack of preparation.

34:18I I have a I have a chef. I mean, it's

34:19crazy how important what you consume is.

34:22I never realized it was that important.

34:24Uh when I thought Michael Chandler, I

34:25hired a chef. That was about four or

34:27five years ago.

34:28>> And yeah, I mean, I don't blow up

34:29anymore in between fights. I'm probably

34:30the heaviest I am right now cuz she's

34:32been on vacation. But

34:34>> yeah, I mean, um it's very important to

34:35especially with how hungry these kids

34:38are. I mean, you know, um, these kids

34:39are coming from the poorest parts of the

34:41world, and they have opportunity to come

34:42and be in the same exact spot as me, and

34:44and it's just you have to live, you

34:48know, when you were when you were doing

34:49this, you didn't have to be a a year-

34:51round athlete

34:52>> because everybody wasn't doing that.

34:54Yeah.

34:54>> You know, and the people that were were

34:55the [ __ ] champions, but no, nobody

34:57was doing that. Like really, you know,

34:58they were they were winning and then

34:59they were having fun for three months,

35:01then they were going back into training

35:02camp

35:02>> and then, you know, and that's that's

35:04how it was. But now you have to you have

35:05to do it year round. This is this is

35:07real life. Uh real real there's real

35:10money on the line now. So, you know, you

35:11have life

35:12>> and it's a it's a lifestyle. That's why

35:14I always laugh at like the 8week the

35:168week training camp and a 12-week

35:18training camp, it's a dead model.

35:20Meaning that if you adopt the lifestyle

35:22of a professional athlete, you're always

35:25training. You're always in shape. But if

35:27you're like, if you're training year

35:28round, it's like, oh, I got to fight

35:30now. I got to get locked in for eight

35:32weeks. It's like you're going to be

35:34exhausted by the time you fight. you're

35:35going to be overtrained. Your body's not

35:37going to want to cut the weight because

35:39you you you've been in a training camp

35:41your whole [ __ ] life. So, I think,

35:44you know, the mentality I think that 8we

35:46and 12week training camp came from the

35:48old mentality where it's like they would

35:50win like you said and they're like, I

35:52want I'm going to get fat. I'm going to

35:53do whatever I need to do. So, that 8

35:55weeks is dedicated that hey, you're

35:57taking somebody who's out of shape to

35:59get ready for a fight. And then that's

36:01why that model works where, like you

36:02said, now it's a lifestyle. Everybody's

36:04doing it year round.

36:06>> Yeah. No, no. And I think I think the

36:08model still works as long as

36:11>> you're ready to, you know, as long as

36:12you're in prime

36:14um athletic, you know, uh ability at 8

36:18weeks.

36:19>> You know, it you know, you don't get to

36:21stay start at 8 weeks and try to get in

36:23shape for a fight and try to cut weight.

Gaethje’s Walkaround and Fight Weight

36:24Yep.

36:24>> Yeah. used to I should be at my fight

36:27weight which is 175 at at eight weeks

36:30out and training there every single day

36:32and you know trying to consume as many

36:34calories as I can. So

36:35>> damn. Hey, you you're at 175 and you cut

36:39to 155. So you cut 20 pounds and then

36:41when you step in the octagon you think

36:43you put back on 20 lbs.

36:46>> I don't think I know I weigh 180. My

36:49last two fights I've weighed 180 or

36:51more.

36:51>> That's why you be [ __ ] hitting

36:52somebody so goddamn hard. That's been my

36:54that's been my intentions. So after I

36:56fought Khabib and I fought Alivera and I

36:59was like Makatin is a big son of a [ __ ]

37:01and I was like these guys are getting

37:02like 180 pounds. So I really you know

37:04made it a point to try to stay at 175

37:08until I get to the fight. So up until 7

37:10days before the fight I am consuming

37:12enough calories until I'm 175 pounds.

37:15>> Wow. That's

37:17>> And then after, you know, I get to like

37:18I probably get to the arena around 181

37:20and by the time I fight I'm like 77, 76.

37:25>> That's fascinating because do you think

37:27that plays a factor in when you fight

37:30at 155, you're able to put on so much

37:33damage because you're me and Matt always

37:36laugh. You only have to be 155 for like

37:39>> five seconds.

37:40>> One minute.

37:41>> Yeah. One minute. That's it. It's like

37:43155. I mean, so I also back in the day

37:46when I fought Eddie Alvarez, I probably

37:47weighed 172 or 168 and I created a lot

37:50of damage on so I mean that's not that's

37:52not why

37:54>> um

37:55>> I think it's but the durability I think

37:57to take shots is is a factor. Well, I

38:00mean your your body. So, for example, if

38:02somebody I'm going to take a heavyweight

38:04for Oh, I can't think heavy. Let's take

38:06uh I'm just saying like somebody who

38:08walks around at 190 and they fight at

38:12170, right? Their body isn't used to

38:15training at that weight. They were

38:17probably cut down to maybe

38:20185. I'm saying like you train and you

38:23fight at the exact same weight. when

38:25when I would fight, I would fight

38:27probably at 134, 135 when I stepped

38:29inside the octagon. I never blew back up

38:32to 142. That makes sense, right? So,

38:34yeah. Yeah. You're fighting and

38:36>> I fight the exact same way as I train.

38:38Yeah.

38:38>> Exactly. So, you're and I feel that's

38:40probably why you have such a long

38:43career, the durability, and you know,

38:45Ili, he's not a 15, he's a 145, right?

38:49I'm not saying he's one with you

38:50fighter, but he's taking damage for

38:52somebody who walks around at 180 all the

38:54[ __ ] time. That make sense?

38:56>> Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. 100%. No, he's not. I

38:58mean, average they say they say 10%,

39:00it's 15% across the board

39:03>> that people that that fighters are

39:04gaining back from weigh in to fight

39:06night till fight time

39:08>> at least.

39:10>> Yeah, that's [ __ ] Yeah, I remember

39:11what championship they made it a rule

39:13where it's like because they didn't want

39:14that. Like I like how one championship

39:16they made it you have to weigh in two

39:17times before you fight and then you have

39:19to be literally like I mean I think it

39:22was like maybe 10 maybe 5%. You could it

39:25be too much over I I can't remember what

39:26it is now.

39:28>> I don't agree with you. I think that

39:30we're adults. I think there's a lot of

39:31money on the line. I think if this guy

39:33wants to kill himself to try to get down

39:34to this weight then I I would I welcome

39:36him to do that. So would you so would

39:38you go back to uh weigh-ins at 4:00

39:43instead of 8 a.m. or would you how how

39:45about weighs before the fight where it's

39:47like hey I'm I'm going to

39:49>> ultimately the only thing that matters

39:50is the is the fighter's health and I

39:52think more time in between the weight

39:54cut and the performance is is more

39:56healthy is is healthier for the athlete

39:58and and healthier and um

40:03you know helps them perform better and

40:06helps the performance and and the the

40:08whole night alto together. So, I think

40:09you need us to be as healthy and

40:11recovered as possible. And so, no, I

40:13would not go back to it. Um, I think

40:16again that we're adults and we play this

40:18game and I've been doing it since I was

40:20four. If people want to kill again, if

40:22people want to kill themselves, there is

40:24advantages to be had and that's the

40:27competition.

40:28>> Would you would you ever go fight at

Will Gaethje Move Up to 170?

40:30170? Would you fight 170? I

40:32>> I mean, at this level, no. I When I was

40:35an amateur, I fought 170, 175, 180.

40:38Nobody would fight me.

40:39>> But I I don't think I'm big enough to

40:41fight at 170. I would need to be 195.

40:45>> Well, I mean, you ain't that far off. I

40:46mean, [ __ ] you. You at 181, so you need

40:4810 more pounds, baby.

40:49>> 195 looking like Patty, not 195 looking

40:52like not 195 looking like Camaro.

40:55>> Oh god. Yeah, cuz that's right. He Yeah,

40:57he just fought at 185 against DDP. Do

41:01you think he felt the difference?

41:02Because I remember after the fight he

41:03goes, "These boys are big. These boys

41:05are big." Yeah. I mean, there's weight

41:08classes for a reason. If the guy's 10

41:10pounds heavier than you, he obviously

41:11has an advantage on paper

41:14>> statistically.

41:15>> Yeah. Yeah, that's true. That's I mean,

41:18there's weight class advantages to be

41:20gained that I want, you know, because

41:23I've been doing this my whole life. I

41:24got it down to a science. Um I don't get

41:26too far out of shape. So, and and I want

41:29to do it.

41:30>> Yeah. All right. I

41:31>> ever want to make I know I hope I mean

41:33do I look forward to making 155 again?

41:36Absolutely not. Like it's my worst

41:38nightmare.

41:39>> Hey, I think I think you're in a

Gaethje’s Advice for Young Fighters

41:41twilight of your career. You're winning.

41:43You're the world champ. Uh there's so

41:44many people who fight in mixed martial

41:46arts who never attain that undisputed

41:49UFC lightweight champion in the world

41:51and you've been able to do it. If you

41:52could give one bit of advice to athletes

41:55that are coming up in mixed martial arts

41:58who've been in the game for a long time

42:00who've never reached that level that you

42:02have, what is the one advice you would

42:04give them

42:05to hopefully they can take and become

42:08successful?

42:11>> So,

42:13I would say that you should go get a

42:17job.

42:19>> Okay. And if that doesn't

42:24light like the the the the the

42:27biggest fire in you, then that should be

42:30what you should do. But

42:33you know, because I was told, don't do

42:34it. There's one in a million chances.

42:36And for me, I was like, if there's one

42:37in a million, I want I can and will be

42:39the one.

42:40>> And if that's not the mindset, then you

42:43can't be there. and you you know

42:44worrying about things that don't matter,

42:47you know, will only take you away from

42:49where where you're ultimately going to

42:50go. Uh stacking days on top of each

42:53other, weeks on top of each other of

42:54perfection and no mistakes and

42:56accountability and you know that's

42:59that's what separates you from others.

43:02And that's that's what I would say. Go

43:04get a [ __ ] job.

43:06>> I I love it. I tell them the same. I

43:07tell them the same thing. they show up

43:08the next day, then I would coach them.

43:11>> So, I with desire.

Who Else Does Trevor Wittman Train?

43:13>> What do you think for Trevor? Do you

43:15think once you retire from fighting?

43:16Like, who else is Trevor working with

43:18that's in the gym that we can look out

43:20for?

43:20>> He's actually he this boy's I don't He's

43:23having a midlife crisis, but we got a

43:25couple more team we're getting at. I'm

43:26getting teammates.

43:27>> Okay.

43:28>> Um so, we got Camaro, which you know,

43:30same position as me. You know, we don't

43:32fight got left. He's got Cory Sanden

43:34who's got plenty of fights left. Yep.

43:36Uh, Far Zam just moved here. He's going

43:39to train here. And

43:43I'm [ __ ] such an

43:45>> No. Well, we have some We have a lot of

43:47young Archie Kogan. He just fought for

43:49the PFL PFL belt. Um,

43:53Xavier Vasquez. This kid's like seven

43:55and0. So, we got a lot of up andcoming

43:56kids that are uh you

43:59moving over here. He's going to train

44:01here.

44:01>> Okay.

44:03>> He's busy,

44:04>> man. We got every we we we run this out

44:06of our MMA. This is our podcast studio

44:08here at Onyx Sports.

44:09>> You got to come check OnX Sports. Come

44:11be on my podcast, please.

44:12>> I will. I will. We

44:14>> do. You have any of my gear?

44:15>> I do not. I don't train mixed martial

44:17arts anymore. I just grapple, man. I I

44:19I'm grapp.

44:22>> Yeah, send me Rashgard. I feel like with

44:24standup, you can't lose it if you

44:26understand

44:28understand like the fundamentals of of

44:31standup. I think grappling something you

44:33have to do all the time. understand the

44:34positions, why this position works in

44:37here. But we do want to make it out for

44:39a mighty journey to train with you

44:41because like I said, each time you

44:43fight, I'm like, why is he going that

44:44way? I'm like, Matt would always tell me

44:46you can't go that way. But you could

44:47when you understand the fundamentals so

44:49well, you can break the rules. And I

44:51think you're breaking rules and you have

44:56uh you have a logic of why you're able

44:57to break those rules. And even when we

44:59were at the football game, I was like,

45:00"Dude, if you circle this way, I'm

45:01kicking your [ __ ] leg all day,

45:03Justin." He goes, "I wouldn't do that to

45:04you, Demetrius, cuz your footwork is

45:06good." And I'm like, "Ah, okay. So,

45:08you're saying your footwork's above

45:10his." He goes, "Yes." I'm like, "Okay,

45:11so you'll break the rule." So,

45:14>> yes, exactly. Well, I just need you to

45:15come work out with Trevor one time. One,

45:17every Saturday we do a footwork class

45:19and it's open to the public. It's not

45:21open to the public. That's a lie. It's

45:23open to whoever I invite. And

45:25>> what did you say?

45:28>> That was it. That was stupid. I don't

45:29know why I would say that. It's not open

45:30to the public. Uh it's open to whoever I

45:32invite and yeah there's like 10 people

45:34that come and he runs us through an hour

45:36footwork drills

45:38>> different things line drills um all

45:40about weight distribution and

45:42understanding angles and space and I

45:44promise you if you work out with them

45:45once you'll understand everything.

45:47>> Okay. Well bet. Hey. All right. So one

45:49of the things I've been doing Justin is

45:50I always ask usually they're retired.

45:52Um, what did you do with your very first

How Gaethje Spent His First Fight Check

45:54paycheck that like you made some money

45:56and what did you do your very last

45:58paycheck that you made from fighting?

46:01>> So, the first time I fall on TV, World

46:03Series of Fighting,

46:05>> I got I was supposed to get paid four

46:06and four and they accidentally paid me

46:08five on five.

46:09>> Oh, nice.

46:09>> And me and my family and I was in

46:11Saturday night and they gave me a

46:12$10,000 check and I had maybe 80 cents

46:14in my account. We went to New York City.

46:16I took my family. We had never been. And

46:18on Sunday, I went to the ATM, put it in,

46:21and they froze my account, and I had

46:22zero dollars in New York City for like

46:25until Monday morning. So that day was

46:27like absolutely terrible. But then I

46:29thought I was rich for life, lost, blew

46:32it in like one week, and I was like, "Oh

46:34[ __ ] not one week, one month, and I was

46:36like, I'm not rich." Did it again,

46:38thought I was rich, went broke, did it

46:40many times, and yeah, I don't know. I

46:43didn't buy anything. I just bought food

46:44cuz I mean we that the life life was so

46:47easy back then.

46:48>> Mhm.

46:49>> Was so easy.

How Gaethje Spent His White House Check

46:51>> And what about now? Would you would you

46:52have to the last paycheck?

46:54>> My last paycheck. I haven't touched it,

46:58>> my man.

46:59>> I haven't touched it,

47:00>> my man. Good for you. Good for you. All

47:03right, Michael. What you got for Justin?

47:05>> Hey, Justin. Thank Thanks for joining

47:06the show. You've been one of our most

47:08requested guests. I'm I'm happy we

47:09finally got to got to make this happen.

47:11And also shout out to your content. If

47:14you guys haven't seen before Gachi

47:16fights, we take a lot of pride in our

47:18content that we do, the mighty journey.

47:20That is some highlevel. I know it's

47:21Trevor's son, right? Who who does that?

47:24>> Yeah. One man, oneman crew.

47:26>> Yeah. Absolutely incredible. Check out

47:27anything before Justin's fights on his

47:29YouTube channel. And um so question I

Will Islam and Gaethje Ever Fight?

47:32have, we of course just saw Islam

47:34Makachev against Ian Garry. Um, Islamia

47:38now has the the longest win streak in

47:40UFC history. Of course, he's 170 now,

47:42but that is a fight that you campaigned

47:44for in the past. Is that still a fight

47:46if he was willing to go back to down

47:49down to 155 that you'd be interested in?

47:52>> I mean, I would say yes. I would always

47:54I would defend myself defend my belt

47:57against whoever they wanted me to defend

47:59it against. However, I know that there

48:01is a negative 1 million% chance that

48:04that man can ever make 155 again.

48:06>> Y

48:08>> yeah. Once once you start putting on

48:09that weight and you start training at

48:11that weight, you're like, I'm not going

48:12back down. Like once I once I started

48:14making 135 and they're like, "Hey, would

48:16you like to fight at 125?" I was like,

48:18"I would never go back to 125 ever

48:20[ __ ] again. Never."

48:23>> [ __ ] Yeah. No. So, we'll see. We'll see

48:25what's up. You know, when you look at

48:26Islam's style, the way he fights, how he

48:28goes about, you know, fighting his

48:31opponents, a lot of people dislike his

48:34style, right? But I always tell people

48:35it's mixed martial arts. I get any

48:38opportunity that I want to beat this

48:40person. So, what do you think about his

48:43style about how he's very strategic

48:45about getting to his opponents, taking

48:47his opponents down, out wrestling his

48:49opponents? He almost knocked out Ian

48:50Gary, where Ian Garry was more about

48:53running from Islam. he wasn't willing to

48:56engage in that fight. So, what do you

48:58think about Islam Style? Like, should he

49:01worry about what people say or he's

49:02like, "Keep doing what you're doing." Or

49:03are you a fan of how he approaches his

49:06fights? I mean, so I like winners, you

49:09know, so I'm a huge fan of Islam

49:10Makachev. Obviously, I'm not like I I

49:15desire something else when I watch MMA

49:19and every you know, we all have our own

49:21biases and so like is it my favorite

49:23nights ever when Islam fights? No. But I

49:26absolutely respect, you know, what he is

49:28and why he's there. You know, these it's

49:30it's such a huge factor that these kids

49:32that do sombo from from these parts of,

49:34you know, the world see submissions from

49:36such a young age. Not only that, they're

49:38Muslim. They've never drank or smoked

49:40anything in their life. Like their

49:41discipline is second to none. And he

49:44deserves every accolade and

49:46accomplishment that that he has. How he

49:48fights and what people think don't mean

49:50anything.

49:51>> Boom. All right. Well, you guys heard it

49:53here from the champ. He's got to go,

49:55Justin. This your

49:57>> I got to go, baby. I got to go swing.

49:58>> I know you got to swing. So, let people

50:00know how they can watch you. How can how

50:01can they support you?

How to Support Gaethje!

50:04>> Uh, well, I have I have my own YouTube

50:06channel, obviously. Justin Gatey. Uh,

50:09you might need to chat GBT how to spell

50:11it, but it's like uh

50:14it's [ __ ] up name, but you can find it

50:16now. Yeah, Justin Gage, Justin Gatey

50:19Onyx Sports. Get some Onyx Sports, guy.

50:21I promise he's the best in the world.

50:23>> Boom. There it goes.

50:25>> That is Justin Gatei. Shout out to

50:27Justin Gatechi for taking the title on

50:29the Mighty Cast. I'm your host, Ste

50:30Johnson. Our guest was Justin, the

50:34lightweight champion of the world,

50:35Gachi, and the co-host Michael Wro.

50:37We'll see you guys in the next episode

50:39of the MightyCast.

50:41>> Let's go.

Mighty Recap!

50:44>> What's going on, guys? Welcome back to

50:45another episode of the Mighty Cast, and

50:46we are going to recap everything we just

50:48went through with our guest. And the

50:50guest was the lightweight champion of

50:52the world, Justin Gachi. Now, if you

50:55guys haven't followed his career, I

50:56remember watching Justin Gatei back in a

50:58World Series of Fighting where he would

51:00come on and he had this amazing pressure

51:03leg kicks. He was finishing fights by

51:06stopping people with leg kicks. You

51:08know, he would get on top of the uh the

51:10cage, do a backflip, and you know, it

51:12was always that what would he be able to

51:14do if he made it to UFC? Same thing when

51:16it comes to Bellator, PFL, One

51:18Championship, Ryzen, you name it. When

51:21he comes to UFC, he's made some noise.

51:23He's had some great fights with, you

51:25know, Eddie Alvarez, Dustin Pare,

51:27Charles Olivera, and he even fought

51:29Habib Namedov for the belt. He got

51:31submitted in the very first round, but

51:33he was hurting Habib with those leg

51:35kicks. But he just came off probably the

51:38biggest victory in his life when he not

51:40when he finished when people thought he

51:43could not be finished, which was Ilio

51:45Deoria. He finishes Ila Deoria not once

51:47but twice because he quit in the stool

51:49and then he quit during the round.

51:52Absolutely amazing. And the thing I love

51:53about Jessica Gatechi is he's so humble.

51:55He's so down to earth. He lives a simple

51:57life. He just wants to golf and he loves

51:59fighting. And to hear the fact that he

52:01said that he is going to rely on his

52:04team around him, his family to let him

52:06know when it's time to quit because he

52:09can't think about retirement. He's got

52:10to stay in the fight. He's got to stay

52:12in there and think about what he's got

52:14to do for the next opportunity when he

52:17does fight. So, it was good catching up

52:19with him and being able to chat with

52:21them to see where he's at with his

52:22headsp space.

Justin Gaethje has had a LEGENDARY Career

52:23>> Yeah, for for PE I agree with what you

52:25said. For people who don't know back in

52:26the day, he was one of those classic

52:28huge prospects that you always wondered

52:30how he would do in the UFC. And I even

52:32remember his first, if you go all the

52:34way back, his first career UFC fight was

52:39the Ultimate Fighter 25 finale. And that

52:42was super super hyped. Like people who

52:44don't know that July 2017 at the time it

52:47was really interesting to see how would

52:49this guy who he was the highlight he was

52:52so entertaining how would he fare and we

52:54go all this time later not nearly a

52:56decade later he is so looking at his

52:59tapology so underrated he is 28 and5 and

53:04those only losses are Max Holloway

53:06Charles Olivera Habib Dustin Porier and

53:10Eddie Alvarez

53:11>> that's crazy

53:11>> I mean that is 28 and5 so many UFC

53:16fights just beat Ilia Taporia Patty

53:18Pimble um Phys twice he he already was

53:22one of the most underrated fighters who

53:24you were just waiting for him to get

53:26that undisputed title and I kind of

53:27agree with you white house wins the

53:30undisputed title there is nothing better

53:32than that it was one of the you you

53:35could not have a better moment to win

53:37your first undisputed title I thought it

53:39was cool because okay fine we have a

53:42segment of fans who they [ __ ] on the

53:44Alam Makachevs, the Hamzach Chamays,

53:46their grappling the way that they

53:48dominate. Here's a guy who is purely

53:51entertainment. He has never had a boring

53:53fight in his life. And to see him win

53:55not a BMF title, but an actual

53:57undisputed one, such a cool moment. No,

54:00I agree with you, dude. Him beating

54:02Illupory on the White House lawn,

Who is Next for Gaethje?!

54:04historical moment, not just in his

54:07career, but in mixed martial arts

54:09career. You know, the mixed martial

54:11arts. Nobody thought that was ever

54:12happen. And that picture of him doing

54:14the backflip off the octagon. I mean, I

54:18don't think there's going to be another

54:19time like that in his career. And when

54:21you look at the landscape of, you know,

54:24the UFC lightweight division, you know,

54:26does illy stay at 155? Do they do the

54:28rematch or do, you know, you got Ruffy

54:32taking on Arma Surkin, which is an

54:33amazing fight. Does he wait for one of

54:35those guys and he fights one more time?

54:37the fact that, you know, he's allowing

54:38his body to heal instead of pushing

54:41through another training camp. He says

54:42now when he fights, when he punches, he

54:44it hurts. He's still got that deep bone

54:46bruise, which he had when we were

54:47playing football together, which was

54:49back in February last year, and he

54:51worked through two camps. I keep saying

54:54it, man. He's at the twilight of his

54:55career. He's got plenty of money. I

54:57think he said it's a business aspect. I

55:01think he rides out in the sunset. He

55:03starts doing the golfing. He's got

55:04plenty of money. He's not touched the

55:06last check. He fought.

55:07>> He's He's not going to

55:10from from how he was talking, he's he's

55:12gonna I I I have a feeling uh maybe mid

55:15mid next year we're going to see him

55:17versus the winner of Armen Hoofy. So I I

55:21what you're say I I like how everyone

55:23always gives you [ __ ] that you tell

55:24everyone to retire, but to in fairness,

55:27you're looking at it from the

55:29perspective of a Demetrius Johnson, of a

55:31George St. Pierre. There's guys who we

55:33know they're gonna fight a million times

55:35and they don't. They'll lose and then

55:36like Nate Diaz for example, it's like

55:38he's never lost a fight in his life

55:40because he could just it doesn't even

55:42matter.

55:44>> It doesn't even matter. But for for you

55:46and Gachi's there too, right? We said he

55:48had five career losses. You had four,

55:49right? So you're viewing it more of a

55:51legacy. If he did not fight again after

55:54the White House, I bet whatever he does

55:57from this point, his legacy will have

55:59been better if he if he retired now. So,

56:01I do see where you're coming from.

56:02>> And just and just from the health

56:04aspect, right? He's 37 years old. Maybe

56:06he wants to have kids. Maybe he wants to

56:08settle down and find love. A lot of

56:10people don't understand to to to find

56:12love and have kids, it takes work. It

56:14takes time to find the right person, to

56:16have conversations, to go on dates, to

56:18get to know somebody, to fall in love. A

56:20lot of people think that [ __ ] just

56:22happens like that. Like, it takes

56:24effort. It takes time and things. If you

56:26want that in your life, you got to put

56:29effort towards that. So I I think you

56:31know I was

56:32>> not to interrupt you but people but

56:33people always give Henry [ __ ] of

56:35>> Henry Cejudo [ __ ] of like oh it was the

56:37worst the worst retirement ever but

56:40people don't get in that exact time he

56:42retired he met his wife and has two kids

56:44now. So do you think he's really of

56:47course I'm sure the legacy thing but

56:49>> that's more there's stuff that's more

56:51important than fighting like it's Dude I

56:53I agree with you on that.

56:54>> I I'll tell you this right now real

56:56quick story for the fans. I was

56:57traveling home and I met a gentleman who

56:59sold his company. He had 30, he had 48

57:01employees. He sold this company for a

57:02tuck t a [ __ ] ton of money and he was

57:06like now I you know he was married and

57:10then he got divorced and now he has

57:11another wife and he was like for me

57:14what's my legacy like I want to be able

57:16to share my life with somebody. I have

57:18all this money and I don't know who to

57:20spend it with right and so we were

57:22talking about like always grinding

57:24always grinding when is enough? when you

57:25make enough, it's like, who do I want to

57:27share this life with? Like, who do I

57:29want to be close with? And I think, you

57:31know, people who are successful, they

57:34need to have that conversation like what

57:36is your why? Like, why are you grinding

57:38so much? And for me, I have a question

57:40all the time. I was like, I love doing

57:41the Mighty Journey, ladies and

57:42gentlemen. But, you know, my kids,

57:44they're getting back into school. We got

57:46full-time football. So, that mighty

57:47Journey [ __ ] is coming to a close until

57:49I'm ready to get out on the streets

57:51again. But Justin Gate is in the

57:53twilight of his career. I'm so excited

57:55to see what he does next. Maybe I need

57:57to join one of his golf tournaments

57:59because you know your boy's got some

58:00golf clubs up there. I'm not a good

58:02shoot, but I'm a good [ __ ] time on

58:04the green. Yeah. Yeah. So then the next

58:07question is who is next for Gachi if he

58:09doesn't retire. We got Armen versus Huy

58:12in a couple weeks. We also have Ilia

58:15Tapora, but I would imagine Ilia

58:16Taporia. That has to be at least a

58:199-month recovery. But I already know

58:21what your answer is. But I would assume

58:23who you I will say also the X factor as

58:25well is um Charles Olivera or Max

58:29Holloway. But we've seen both of those

58:30guys fight Gachi before. So but I'll say

58:34out of those four guys I just listed,

58:35Huy Arman, Max Holloway, Olive, who

58:39would you want to see next?

58:40>> I mean it's just as an interesting spot.

58:42Like you said the only guys he's ever

58:43lost to, you know, Eddie Alvarez, former

58:46UFC world champion. Habof, former world

58:49champion. Charles Oliver, former world

58:52champion. Max Hollow, former world

58:54champion. I think the only person that

58:56he's lost to that wasn't a world

58:59champion or they've all been world

59:00champions. Let me take a look.

59:02>> Yeah, Dustin Dustin Porier, but then he

59:04avenged he avenged that loss with a a

59:06head kick back.

59:07>> So, Dustin Pier is the only guy he's

59:09ever lost to that was never a world

59:11champion. But, I mean, that's [ __ ]

59:13Killer's Row that he's lost to. It's not

59:15like he's lost, you know what I mean?

59:17Like so for me I would not be mad if I

59:20saw Charles versus Justin Gai him trying

59:22to redeem himself you know or him

59:24fighting Max how 155 max his opportunity

59:27to become a champion at lightweight um

59:29or he fights the runner of Hui and

59:31Arasuki I think or does he do the

59:34rematch with Iloor I think Justin Gi has

59:37options all around him that he could

59:39take that the fight is going to be

59:40interesting just because each time he

59:41fights you know it's going to be a

59:43banger so I think Dustin is sitting

59:45pretty you know me I'm on other side of

59:47the grass where I'm like, "Dude, you got

59:48all the money. You haven't spent your

59:50last check. I think you just enjoy, you

59:52know, playing golf, helping uh Trevor

59:55build the next star and don't worry

59:57about taking concussions." But, you

59:58know, we all sit and wait to see what

1:00:01decision he makes.

Mighty Journey w/ Gaethje COMING SOON?!

1:00:02>> Yeah. We'll we'll try to make it out to

1:00:04to the Onyx gym in in I believe is it in

1:00:07Denver or Colorado? No, I think it's is

1:00:08it in Colorado Springs? I'm not sure

1:00:10exactly where it is, but

1:00:11>> Yeah, I'm not either.

1:00:11>> Somewhere in Colorado. It is a really

1:00:13cool gym. Whenever I see their kind of

1:00:16fight documentaries, they film their

1:00:17really cool lighting. But most

1:00:19importantly, Trevor Whitman, I I would

1:00:21love to pick his brain. May maybe do a

1:00:24mighty cast with him. That would be

1:00:25pretty cool. Yeah. Just cuz he's he's

1:00:27one of the great coaches out there.

1:00:29Coach Kamaro Usman, Cory Sanhagen,

1:00:31Justin Gatei, Rosenama Ununas. So, we we

1:00:34got to make it out there eventually. And

1:00:36I want to see his gloves. Those are the

1:00:37the I wish UFC would make a deal with

1:00:39them because at least what I've heard,

1:00:41those gloves are are really the kind of

1:00:44the safest in terms of eye pokes.

1:00:45>> Yeah. Well, you know, ladies and

1:00:46gentlemen, we're going to try to make

1:00:47this happen. Um hopefully we can find

1:00:49out what Justin Gates's next fight is. I

1:00:52think Colorado is very doable. It's a

1:00:53quick trip right down the street. I'm

1:00:55very uh familiar with Colorado. I had my

1:00:58last fight there. I retired there. So, I

1:01:00would love to make it out to Justin

1:01:01Gate. So, boys, if you guys enjoyed this

1:01:04episode of the Moneycast, please leave a

1:01:05like, subscribe. Also, hit that bell to

1:01:08never know we go live as we're always

1:01:11we keep you guys happy. As always, I'm

1:01:13your host Johnson. The guest was Justin

1:01:15Gatei, the right-hand man, the producer,

1:01:18Michael Wrover. We'll see you guys at
