0:00today we're going to talk about beat
0:01dicks or beats this group of people
0:04sometimes referred to as the Beat
0:06Generation and they're sort of a
0:08forerunner to the hippies of the 1960s
0:11in fact there's some really close ties
0:14between people like Alan Ginsburg who
0:16we'll hear about the day and being in
0:20New York City in the 1950s as a beat
0:22Nick and then him literally being in San
0:24Francisco in the
0:261960s when the hippies were kicking but
0:29before I get there let's just think a
0:31little bit about why we're talking about
0:34this group of people it really helps a
0:37lot if you've read through uh chapter 24
0:41in the textbook first that chapter talks
0:44a lot about the affluent society of the
0:471950s uh and what people thought was
0:50going well in the United States during
0:53the
0:541950s the Beats who we're talking about
0:58today were a sort of counterculture to
1:02that normal middle class Suburban life
1:05that so many people think was a positive
1:09the beatnicks rejected that sense of
1:12normal American values and instead
1:15proposed a series of of new values based
1:18on personal freedoms that many Americans
1:21in the 1950s saw as outside of the north
1:26now this lecture there are as you'll see
1:28some clips inside the PowerPoint uh and
1:32I've taken the hyperlinks for those and
1:34I've put them in the the module so you
1:37can watch those separately uh that'll
1:40that'll help you understand some of this
1:42material a little bit better okay so
1:46with that let's get into the beatnick
1:48and talk about what changes they are
1:50unsettled about
