0:00Veins are blood vessels containing blood flowing to the heart.

0:03While arteries have blood flowing from the heart.

0:06The blue is representative of blood vessels containing

0:09deoxygenated blood,

0:10while the red blood vessels have oxygenated blood fresh from the

0:13lungs. Now, let's follow the path of the blood through the

0:16heart. The superior vena-cava receives blood from

0:19the head, neck, upper limbs and chest.

0:22Meanwhile, the inferior vena-cava receives blood

0:25from the trunk, viscera, and lower limbs.

0:28both superior and inferior vena-cava

0:31end up in the right atrium, one of the four chambers of the heart.

0:34The heart not only has four chambers, it also has four

0:37valves. The purpose of the valves is to keep

0:40blood moving in the right direction and not flow backwards.

0:43Blood exits the right atrium through the tricuspid valve

0:46so called because it has three flaps, and

0:49enters the right ventricle. the blood exits the

0:52right ventricle through the pulmonary valve and enters the

0:54pulmonary artery. Again, it is an artery because

0:57blood is flowing away from the heart, but it is blue because

1:00it lacks oxygen.

1:02The pulmonary artery then splits into the left and right

1:05pulmonary arteries, which go to each respective lung.

1:08In the lungs, gas exchange occurs.

1:11The blood discards carbon dioxide and picks up oxygen.

1:14Now, blood comes back from the lungs through the pulmonary veins,

1:17entering the left atrium. Next, the blood is pumped into the left

1:20into the left ventricle through the mitral, or bicuspid valve.

1:24finally, the oxygenated blood leaves the left ventricle

1:27through the aortic semi-lunar valve, entering the

1:30aortic arch.

1:32the aorta, which is the largest of all the arteries, distributes the

1:35oxygenated blood to the rest of the body. The aortic

1:38arch has three major branches, which supply

1:41the head and arms with blood. Then, the aorta

1:44curls downward from behind the heart, forming the descending aorta,

1:47which descends through the chest and continues down through the abdomen.

1:51In the abdomen, the descending aorta splits to supply the pelvis

1:54and legs with blood.
