0:50means someone who speaks Spanish because
0:52in the case of Brazilian sick Portuguese
0:54Hispanic is basically based on whether
0:57you or your family speak the language of
1:00Spanish whereas Latino is focusing more
1:02on geographic location that being Latin
1:04America so unlike Hispanic Latino
1:07includes Brazilian but exclude Spaniards

2:35whether they're Latino Hispanic or
2:37Spanish because many Latin American
2:39countries like those of my parents
2:42Colombia and Peru were colonized by
2:44Spain many folks don't feel the need or
2:47want to identify with a term that
2:49indicates them belonging to Spain maybe
2:51think of it this way Hispanic a sense of
2:54community through a connection to Spain
2:57Latino a sense of community through a
3:00history of colonization from Spain
3:03colonization isn't something that we
3:05just read about in our textbooks we feel
3:07the effects of centuries of colonization
3:09today through lost history erasure of
3:11native and African languages based
3:13practices basically our culture so it's
3:17no wonder why so many folks just don't
3:19want to identify with the term Hispanic
3:21that doesn't mean the Latino doesn't
3:23have any remnants of Spanish colonialism
3:25I mean
3:27even latina is supposed to describe
3:29folks from Latin America but the term
3:32Latin America only came to be after
3:34European Spanish imperialism it's
3:37important to remember that none of these
3:38forms of identity are perfect and that's
3:41because they're socially constructed and
3:43mostly only used in the u.s. they also
3:46leave people to assume that Latino or
3:49Hispanic is a race when that's not true
3:51which is why so many Latinos with
3:53African ancestry have begun to use the
3:55term after latina as for me well until a
3:59term that comes around the fully
4:00encompasses and embraces both the
4:02indigenous and African influences of
4:04Latin America I'm going to stick to
4:07identifying as an indigenous latina how
4:10do you identify how do you feel about
