0:00what's up youtube so in my recent video
0:02about kick drums i posted a
0:04xenonesque style example quite a few of
0:06you guys were interested in how i did
0:08the bass
0:08for that example so i'm going to walk
0:11you through it let's dive in and have a
0:12[Music]
0:14look
0:17so just as a quick recap and show you
0:20guys a little bit of what i've kind of
0:21like added i've added this cool
0:23percussion groove thing to add a kind of
0:24like polyrhythmic
0:26type of thing to what i was busy working
0:28on but
0:29just to recap you guys i'm going to show
0:31you the example of what we are working
0:33on over here

1:02so let's have a look at the space it's
1:05pretty simple
1:06um i'm going to show you guys how we
1:08create such a thing so what i'm going to
1:10do
1:10quickly is jump in and add a blank
1:13instance of serum over here
1:15and we can dive in and start creating
1:17the sound
1:18so what i did was i actually straight
1:20off the bat went to
1:22basic shapes turned the random down
1:25so that the phase is triggering the same
1:27every time and then switch the wave
1:28table position over to the saw wave so
1:30we are now creating
1:31a basic shape's saw wave i'm going to
1:33quickly show you guys the midi and then
1:35we're going to dive into a little bit
1:36more of the
1:37sound design elements that are going on
1:39over there so let's just copy this
1:40across
1:41and we can dive in and have a look
1:43quickly at what
1:44what's going on and what particularly
1:46makes this special uh
1:48with regards to most kind of other
1:50traditional cytrons that we know
1:52with the kind of a galloping bass line
1:54so as you see here
1:55there's a kick and a bass playing at
1:57exactly the same time
1:59which is kind of like sacrilege within
2:00cytrons but whatever
2:02um it suits this groove of this kind of
2:04style so every second one is kind of
2:06like
2:06shifted one off so it kind of like gives
2:09this like slightly
2:11off time syncopated groove where you've
2:14got like this
2:15one that's on the kick and one that's
2:17slightly off the kick
2:18and they're both side chains so you
2:20don't really notice that it's on the
2:21kick but
2:22um you will you'll get the vibe when we
2:24start creating the synth
2:25uh when we start creating the sound and
2:27soloing it and stuff
2:29and then here at the end of the bar
2:30we've got a little bit of a portamento
2:32thing going on
2:32there so for those uh who are wanting to
2:35copy that midi you can pause the screen
2:37over there and do that but let's just
2:41dive into this uh sound design over here
2:44real quick and we can start
2:45recreating the actual pad so the patch
2:47itself is pretty simple uh what we're
2:48going to want to do first off
2:50is turn the octave down one and then we
2:52can
2:53hit mono legato and give it a little bit
2:56of portamento
2:57so that's going to give it that kind of
2:58like slidey motion at the end of the bar
3:04so here what we can do is we can apply a
3:07filter we can turn it up a
3:09couple to mg low 24 we can turn this
3:11down quite a bit
3:18okay so we're getting there um what
3:20we're going to want to do here though
3:21is let's put on a lfo tool um so we can
3:24create a side chain pattern i'm just
3:26going to check what we had
3:28in the previous example so it was
3:30something like this
3:32uh let's just copy this one over like
3:33this
3:35so at about
3:39a third of the way across we go all
3:42out and then down a little bit like that
3:44sort of that kind of shape
3:49so here um i did something interesting
3:51with the
3:52actual kind of like fft harmonics as you
3:55can see here let's actually just pop
3:56this over here
3:58and i boosted some of the kind of like
4:00mid-range harmonics over there
4:02just to kind of like you know give it
4:04extra mid-range
4:06i think it was like the third and fourth
4:08or something like that
4:13so it gives it that kind of like
4:15mid-range grindy texture
4:23so here what we can do is we can give it
4:25another envelope just to give it a
4:27little bit of pluck
4:28or a little bit of movement over the
4:30kind of like duration of the sound
4:32um we can play with it here we can be
4:34experimental you don't have to do
4:35exactly what i'm doing here
4:45that kind of accentuates that kind of
4:47like offbeat you know where we shifted
4:48that one note slightly off it
4:50accentuates
4:51that part of it
5:08so

5:52so i'm just going to add some
5:53compression inside serum here just to
5:54bring the level up a little bit
5:56and that's about it from the serum side
5:58of things so i want to dive into what i
6:00did in terms of the processing
6:02here i'm actually just going to drag
6:04this instance over
6:06onto this channel and we can have a look
6:07at it because it might be
6:09getting a little bit advanced to
6:10recreate that whole thing so let's just
6:13pop this over here
6:14before the lfo tool i can enable it and
6:16we can open it up over here
6:18so i basically was trying to create a
6:19kind of like mid-range or high-mids kind
6:22of like saturation system
6:24and then add a bit of this kind of like
6:25disperser to the kind of lower mids
6:28so what i actually want to do is
6:31so this is only mixed to about 30
6:33percent i want to
6:35turn this all the way down so we can
6:36just focus in on what disperser is doing
6:39here
6:39and i actually want to turn this up so
6:40you can really hear what's happening
6:54it's kind of like smearing that like
6:56lower mid range kind of like it's
6:58kind of making it more rounder rather
7:00than boxy if that makes sense
7:02but i feel like it was too drastic so i
7:04just mixed it down a little bit
7:37same thing with this uh saturated i feel
7:39like i changed the patch a little bit in
7:41terms of those envelopes i can actually
7:42reduce this amount of
7:44mix because we're adding more kind of
7:45like mid-range harmonics in the sound
7:48we don't have to add it with the
7:49saturator afterwards but anyway that's
7:51about it in terms of the base there
7:54then the rest was a slight equalization
7:56i added a 20 pass and then removed some
7:58of the mid-range over here
