0:00Hello everybody and welcome back to the

0:02overlap breakdown channel. Today we are

0:04here to cover the Manchester derby which

0:05has been lost by Manchester United one

0:07gold to nil at Old Trafford to

0:09Manchester City. Uh I'm absolutely

0:11fuming. My head is kettled. Um yeah,

0:14been a bad morning, bad 24 hours. Thank

0:17you for everyone before we get in before

0:18we get into what happened last night. Uh

0:20thank you for everyone who g me loads of

0:22love, appreciation, support off the back

0:24of the preview piece that we did on the

0:26overlap and obviously the preview piece

0:27that we did on this. it all got scrapped

0:29and put in the bin because folding

0:31kicked someone. Uh, and it changed the

0:33entire game and we're going to explain

0:35to you how that was the case and why it

0:38actually made it a harder game for

0:40Manchester United playing against 10.

0:58to take it on to the game, I mean, I've

0:59said this a couple of times already in

1:01the previews and stuff, but I did not

1:03think he was going to start Benjamin

1:04Cesco in this game, and he didn't start

1:06Benjamin Cesco in this game. And what

1:08they were actually trying to do,

1:09Manchester United, in the first bits of

1:10the game was to play this box midfield

1:12with two more mobile nines drifting in

1:14here to overload, as we said in the

1:16preview piece, this threeman of

1:18Manchester City in here. And if I just

1:20push this up onto um onto Manchester

1:23United shape, I've got some screenshots

1:25to show you later um of what Manchester

1:27United were trying to do. Uh from this

1:30position, they were actually using um

1:32inbuilo to come and stand a little bit

1:34more narrow to bring Josco Gavardio in.

1:36That meant Ruben Diaz had to push up and

1:38it just created a little bit more

1:39balance or unbalance in Manchester

1:41City's back line. Dalow was actually

1:43being the one who was pushing all the

1:45way down the right hand side and bloody

1:47hell, that didn't work. Um, so was then

1:50coming down and playing pretty much as a

1:52left back to cover that overload and it

1:53meant we just had a lot of space here.

1:55There's a lot of nice chances where we

1:56combined through the middle. Uh, and in

1:58the first 20 minutes, Manchester United

1:59were pretty decent. I've got a graphic

2:01on your screen that just shows um sort

2:04of the stats through the game through

2:06the 0 to 23 minutes. So just uh before

2:09fold and dread card, we can see we're

2:10tied on expected goals. We have more

2:12shots shot on target compared to City's

2:14none. We had three to five in terms of

2:16touchs in the opposition's box. Uh

2:18passing accuracy was decent. Successful

2:19passes pretty much on the same passes

2:21played into the box pretty much the same

2:22as City. Jewels won five to City 13.

2:25Pretty even game. I think what you saw

2:28in them first moments were Manchester

2:30United actually looking like, you know,

2:32they were going to do this thing where

2:33they dropped someone off the center

2:34line, try and play through the middle,

2:35and use the counterattacks from the

2:37wingers uh to come in behind. And I'm

2:39not really going to spend too much time

2:41talking about them first 23 minutes

2:43because it it was all irrelevant. Um, we

2:46genuinely I thought we were in the game.

2:47I thought we were in the game. The game

2:48was playing out as exactly I was

2:50expecting it to with the with the two

2:52more mobile nines uh combining. I've got

2:54an example on your screen just to show

2:56you what that um what these what we were

2:58actually trying to do and why it was

3:00working up until the red card in my

3:02opinion. So when the ball goes back to

3:04Martinez in the build, we can see it

3:06right here. We can see that Manchester

3:07City are pressing in that 442. Now you

3:09can see the question that is being asked

3:12of Marcus Rashford and Ruben Diaz here.

3:14We're talking about that more mobile

3:16nine stepping off the line. Ruben Diaz

3:17has to go into midfield. It's a lot

3:19harder for Ruben Diaz to jump out that

3:21back line if he's got Brian and Bumo

3:23spinning in behind. And you can see that

3:24on this picture right here. It's a

3:26really, in my opinion, sensible setup

3:28from Michael Carrick in the first, you

3:30know, 15 20 minutes of the game. Plays

3:32on and then when it plays on, you can

3:34see that box in midfield that we've got

3:35right there. Uh Sami Sammy Lemons goes

3:38along to Marcus Rashford. Marcus

3:39Rashford then wins this duel against

3:41Ruben Diaz getting that man-to-man.

3:43Flicks it on to Brian Inbumo. And then

3:44we run down the pitch and this is where

3:46Marcus Rashford's fouled on five minutes

3:48for the free kick that Manchester United

3:49had. And this was one of, you know, a

3:51few moments that Manchester United had

3:54in the game that were were decent. I

3:55mean, I've got this example here.

3:57Manchester City playing in that 3-16 as

3:59we uh analyzed it in the preview. The

4:01ball loss comes from Phil Foden. We also

4:03said he was pressable in the preview.

4:04Manchester United counterattack through

4:06the uh through the space right here. And

4:08then Ka takes the most stupid shot from

4:11this angle on your screen right now as

4:12you can see. And you'll you'll realize

4:14that a lot of the attacking decision-

4:16making in this game throughout all these

4:17pictures that we're going to go on to

4:18speak about were awful. Like the the

4:21attacking decisions from the fullbacks

4:22and the the 10s, everyone was just so

4:25poor. Like unbelievably poor. And this

4:28was one of very many of them from

4:30Matteas Ka. Um, so yeah, I just thought

4:33in general, decent start to the game.

4:35Let's see how we get on. Few missed

4:37chances. Maybe it'll scrub out. Maybe

4:38United, maybe United will get up for it.

4:41Then, um, Phil Foden got sent off. And

4:43to be honest, um, you could actually

4:46come away from this match saying that

4:47Phil Foden was Manchester City's best

4:49player because what he did was

4:50completely change how the game was

4:52played out. I mean, Moresca said it

4:54himself. Moresca said, "Phil Foden's red

4:56card didn't just change the game for us,

4:58but it also changed it for Man United

4:59because they are very good in transition

5:01and attacking space in behind. The game

5:03became more difficult for them." When I

5:05say Foden was Manchester City's best

5:07player, like I'm not joking. I've got a

5:08stat on your screen right now.

5:10Manchester United when they have had 55%

5:12or more of the ball since the start of

5:14the last season. We have played 20

5:17games. We have won seven, drawn seven,

5:21and lost six. where Man United have had

5:2440% or less possession, they have played

5:2710 and won every single one of them

5:30games.

5:32That is ridiculous. Like honestly, when

5:34I looked at this, that is a joke. So

5:36that's that's from August 2025.

5:39Like that is a joke. Um

5:43like I really don't know what to say

5:44about that. And that therefore changed

5:46the game. I think Man United finished

5:47the game on 54% possession. So, they're

5:50actually in between them two um them two

5:52parameters. But that just shows you what

5:54Manchester United had to try and do.

5:56Come out and play with the ball. And

5:58then when Foden got sent off, and I'll

5:59just show you what it looks like when

6:01Manchester City had to, you know, sit in

6:02a little bit more. And I'm not going to

6:04lie, Manchester United did not control

6:05the game. I mean, I'm talking about him

6:07having uh 44% possession. That's not

6:09really controlling the game. Let's be

6:11honest, it's not controlling the game.

6:13But I often made this point under Ruben

6:15Amarin that Manchester United can't hold

6:17the ball. And it was because of the

6:19platforming of the fullbacks, the wing

6:21backs, because what you end up is in the

6:23final third, you end up with Dallow

6:25holding the width on the right and Daru

6:26holding the width on the left. And they

6:28are not good width holders. I've said

6:29this a lot. Daru maybe if he's playing

6:31left back, yes, with maybe someone

6:33tucked inside, but in this game, we

6:35played that mobile front three that we

6:38were all talking about. The difference

6:39is the lineup that was put out by

6:42Michael Carrick was to take advantage of

6:44what Manchester City were trying to do

6:45against us at 11 v11. When the game

6:48state changed when it went down to 10

6:51men for Manchester City, what did they

6:53do at Halime? They reacted. They took

6:56Churkey off putting GI on who was a

6:58harder worker off the ball and a better

7:00transitional threat. and Moresca reacted

7:03to the game and it was a difference in

7:05class for me that Michael Carrick took

7:07till the 68th minute to sub Benjamin

7:09Cesco on after Manchester United went 1

7:11nil down as soon as City got the red

7:14card we had 15 to 20 minutes after the

7:16red card where we were sat around the

7:18box Daloo on the right side on the left

7:20side everyone else in the middle trying

7:22to lob balls in behind to Dowo was

7:24running in the box and Bumo running in

7:26the box but everyone else is just sat on

7:27the end so when it pushed up into the

7:29final third you had This inbumo inside

7:32Dalow outside mobile 9 ka there not

7:36really penetrating the box Bruno

7:38somewhere in there Rashford somewhere in

7:40there dog on the outside you had

7:42Tielemans Kobby Maguire Landro Martinez

7:47and it looked like this I've got a

7:49picture on your screen to show you

7:51exactly what it looked like. So right

7:53you can see there on your screen right

7:54now this is what it looks like. This is

7:56how it changed so much for Manchester

7:58United. You can see in this picture, for

8:00some reason, Rashford's on the right

8:02side and Dalow's now inside the pitch.

8:05So, it's just awkward structural, you

8:06know, changes. And you can see we've

8:08only got two center halfs, two sitting

8:10midfielders in front of it. I mean, we

8:12get a decent chance from this. I mean,

8:13but it's Marcus Rashford who plays it

8:15down to down to Dallow. But if you just

8:17look at the pitch that we're playing out

8:18right now, the ball's coming inside from

8:20Marcus Rashford. It's going to be an in

8:22an an outswinging ball, sorry, from the

8:23right hand side right foot. Someone's

8:26making a run across the face of the

8:27defender, but we've got no focal point

8:28in the box. And to be honest, the lack

8:32of changes was massive in this game. I

8:34mean, Benjamin Cesco was the most

8:37obvious sub at Halime you could have

8:38made. Matteas Kuna, Brian Bumo, Marcus

8:41Rashford, Bruno Fernandez as a front

8:43four aren't good against a deeper

8:45sitting defense. And they did that. They

8:48sat off against us. And if I just show

8:50you sort of um even though even though

8:52Manchester City went down to uh 10 men,

8:55we still had counterattacks. Believe it

8:57or not, in this game, Manchester City

8:58still held a decent amount of the ball.

9:00I said to be I said before uh uh 54%

9:03possession Man United had. So it wasn't

9:05all Man United with, you know, with

9:07small space always. Maybe towards the

9:09end of the game, it was. But look at

9:11this on your screen. This is 38 minutes

9:13in against Manchester City. They've got

9:15the red card. They're bringing the ball

9:16out the back. Manchester United somehow

9:18get played through, but then we win the

9:20ball in defense and you think we're

9:21going to transition. We transition and

9:24it's 5v4 in this example on your screen.

9:27It's 5v4. What does Bruno Fernandez do?

9:30We're talking about attacking decision-

9:31making. He puts one in rose head from a

9:33from a crossing position and it's just

9:36mindbogglingly bad what was going on and

9:38the decision- making. And before I've

9:40not even mentioned this, we all know we

9:42got the fastest PGM L apology of all

9:45time. We all know it was a dislow goal,

9:47right? And I'm not I'm not excusing. I'm

9:49not running over that. I've said this

9:50multiple times. The decision cost us a

9:52point. The performance cost us three

9:54points. That is the reality of the

9:56situation last night. We did not play

9:58well enough to win the game. But if they

10:00take the goal off momentum, whatever. If

10:02you if you take the goal off, we

10:04probably get a point in the game. Still

10:05wasn't good enough. And to be honest, it

10:07is gutting that they took three and they

10:09got all the they got all the praise for

10:10it and stuff like that. And we do know

10:12it wasn't. We know factually it was a

10:14wrongly given goal. We know that. But

10:17the reality of the situation is we

10:18didn't do enough to win the game. We

10:20didn't do enough to force the game, you

10:22know. So yeah, it's really really poor.

10:26But I've got to show you the bitter city

10:29praise. Believe me, this is hard for me

10:31to do. Um why Mesca changed Turkey and

10:35why this effectively won them the game.

10:37So this is at 31 minutes. On your screen

10:39right now, you can see the structure

10:41that Manchester United have now moved

10:42into. We mentioned it before. We've got

10:44the two center halfs, two sitting

10:45midfielders in front, fullbacks holding

10:47the width, and you can see that when the

10:48ball is worked out to the right hand

10:50side. This is a chance that actually

10:51Marcus Rashford had. Bruno Fernandez

10:53receives it in this little left pocket

10:55here. So, if you can imagine that Marcus

10:56Rashford's trying to make a little run

10:58in behind. Churkeyy's come all the way

11:00back, but the press from Churkey is way

11:03too delayed. He's not intense enough off

11:05the ball. And this is 31 minutes with 10

11:07men. Bruno Fernandez smashes a right

11:10good ball into Marcus Rashford. Marcus

11:12Rashford touched just a little bit too

11:13loose. Donor Roma comes out and gets the

11:15ball. But you can see it on the picture

11:16right now. Turkeykey's nowhere near

11:18Bruno Fernandez in this move. And

11:20because of that intensity, Enzo Moresco

11:23reacted. He took him off and then Injai

11:26come on. And Inai was incredible for

11:28Manchester City. Off the ball, on the

11:30ball, winning fouls, being scrappy.

11:32That's what you get when you play for

11:33Everton. And you know, you you work hard

11:35as a natural wide player.

11:37it. You can just and it's really painful

11:39because you watch City's rebuild and

11:41what they've done. They sold Seeho who

11:44who missed that edge to his game that

11:46cutting edge off the ball on the ball

11:48and they brought him on and it was a

11:50completely different type of you know

11:51dynamic on the wide on the wide area of

11:53the pitch but they bought him and they

11:55know that we were getting and and he and

11:56it works so well for Manchester City and

11:58this is why it's so painful. [snorts]

12:00But the one thing that when I watched

12:02the game back on Hawkeye and yes I

12:03actually have watched the game back.

12:04It's Jesus. Um, one thing I did realize

12:07when watching the game back on Hawkeye

12:10was the work ethic. It was so bad. And

12:13I'm not going to sit here and I'm not

12:15going to batter the players, you know,

12:16it's not my it's not my type of thing

12:18that I do on here. And I try and

12:19understand tactically what's going on in

12:21the game, but for me, when you're up

12:23against 10 men, you're at Old Trafford

12:26and at one point we were 1 nil down. I

12:29mean, this comes at 1 nil down. This is

12:31actually just after Manchester City's

12:33goal. It's on 65 minutes. So it makes it

12:35even worse. Um, so we can see Manchester

12:39United on your screen right now playing

12:41around the box. Ball comes in. There's a

12:44loose dropping ball on the edge of the

12:45box. Daru gets the ball pinched off him.

12:48And if I just fast forward it like 20

12:50seconds on this move. Look at this

12:52picture on your screen. Like I cannot

12:54believe this picture. This is on 6530.

12:57Du Ka Marcus Rashford are behind

13:01Manchester City's backline. They're

13:03behind it like running back to try and

13:05like what I mean I mean if I show you

13:08right now the go back to the first

13:10picture Elliot Anderson is stood next to

13:13Matteas Ka when the ball loss happens.

13:16Elliot Anderson's playing for Manchester

13:17City away at Old Trafford. He's

13:19shuttling the midfield. He's covering

13:21all the blades of grass because they've

13:22got 10 men. Look at where he is when

13:25Manchester United's three attacking

13:27players in the sequence are behind

13:29Manchester City's back line. He picks up

13:31the ball ahead [clears throat] of him by

13:33about 10 meters ahead of him. He picks

13:35up the ball and then starts playing

13:37whilst Marcus Rashford, Kanye were all

13:39behind him and he settles them down and

13:41then he gets them going. That is

13:43ridiculous. That that's the team with 10

13:45men that have come to our place and

13:47we've got three players behind their

13:48back line. I mean when I watched it back

13:51it was an absolute disgrace. I mean look

13:53at this final picture here. I mean look

13:56at that. What are we doing? Look at the

13:58gap on the right hand side.

14:00just what is going on there? And I mean,

14:03we all know that Michael Carrick likes

14:04to gamble on and off the ball with the

14:06attacking players staying forward, but

14:07tracking back in this instance right

14:09here, one nil down, you've just conceded

14:10Manchester derby against 10 men. It's a

14:13disgrace that there that that's not

14:15being tracked back and I mean, I watched

14:17it. I watched all I watched all of this

14:19clip. They stay that high. They stay

14:21that high and it's honestly it was

14:23absolutely ridiculous. And yeah, it's

14:26going to be it's going to be one of them

14:28weeks. I mean, I'll just show you right

14:29now before we wrap up the difference in

14:30Manchester cities and Man United's

14:32average um positions graph. So, you can

14:36see by this what Enzo Mesa and I and

14:39myself are talking about where

14:40Manchester United struggle to attack

14:42deeper sitting blocks. I mean, you can

14:44see on your screen right now first 23

14:46minutes. Look how deep Martinez,

14:48Tielemans, Maguire, Dowo, look how deep

14:50they are. That's where you want them.

14:52Look at how much space in theory on this

14:54graph that Ka's got to attack into on

14:57the opposition's half. Look at I mean

14:58look at it there. Dogu the same. Fast

15:00forward it from 23 on to 96. You can see

15:03just how higher Manchester United have

15:05to push up against Manchester City. The

15:07space reduces and the the glaring

15:09weaknesses within players like Inbumo Ka

15:12show Daru weak first touch in small

15:15spaces. Can't get the ball between the

15:17lines consistently aren't clean enough

15:18in their actions. They they need bigger

15:20space for it to look better. That is the

15:23reality. Diego Dalo, Patrick Daru cannot

15:26be your team's wide creators against 10

15:28men. That is the Ruben Amarin model.

15:31We've seen that it can't work

15:33consistently against deeper sitting

15:35defenses. But as much as it is a

15:37platforming issue from Michael Carrick

15:39to, you know, work with these players,

15:42he didn't buy any of them them

15:43attackers. He didn't buy any of them.

15:45They've built that squad and we've we

15:48lack true width now. We've got such a

15:50narrow attack. You know, we signed Ka to

15:53play that left 10. We signed Ibumo to

15:56play right 10. We signed wing backs to

15:58play wing back. And we're not doing any

15:59of that anymore. So, just as much as it

16:01is a platforming issue for Michael

16:02Carrick and stuff like that. Sometimes

16:04his hands are tied. You know, we don't

16:07have the squad. Again, the squad

16:09building weaknesses are just shocking,

16:11glaringly obvious. And I mean, I'll show

16:13you exactly just be literally last one

16:15just before we wrap up. On your screen

16:16right now, I've got the OPA shot map.

16:20Look at Manchester United shot position

16:22shooting positions here. I mean, what is

16:24that? 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 shots of Man

16:29United 16 outside the box. That is

16:32shocking. Three shots on target in

16:35comparison to Manchester City's two.

16:36Manchester City had more expected goals

16:38than Manchester United in this game.

16:40They played with 10 men for 75 minutes.

16:44I just can't I just can't excuse it. And

16:46that is what you get when you have a

16:48squad that is more tentative to big

16:50space who make poor decisions in small

16:52spaces. And as much as Michael Carrick's

16:55substitutions and lack of in-game

16:57adaptability in comparison to Morescus

16:59has to pay and has to, you know, take

17:00criticism, the players in the final

17:03third technically and just in terms of

17:05their decision-m were so far off the

17:08pace. so far off the pace. Um, I just

17:12couldn't believe what I was watching at

17:13times. And it's really gutting because

17:15it does feel like a one of them big

17:18blows to the stomach. And I'm not just

17:19I'm not just, you know, bigging it up

17:21like to for the YouTube, for the for the

17:24media, for the for all that stuff. This

17:26is a bad bad one. Like a really bad one.

17:28And we have to react against Brighton

17:30and we have to go again after that and

17:32go to Fulham and we have to react there.

17:33We come back after the international

17:35break. We've got Spurs, we've got

17:36Atletico away, we've got Leads away.

17:38some really difficult fixtures coming

17:40up. Como way after that, Bournemouth,

17:42Chelsea. They're not It's not going to

17:45get any easier this. So,

17:48yeah, I really I really I'm

17:51Yeah, it's like a bullet bullet to

17:52bullet to the chest this one. Really

17:54tough to take and I've not really done

17:56that many records for the breakdown

17:58where I've actually come in and my

17:59head's this hot before. I mean, I did it

18:01a lot under Ruben Ammer. There was like

18:03three or four, but this one was just

18:05like, wow. Manchester derby can't even

18:08score at home against 10 me five

18:09minutes. That's ridiculous. But yeah,
