0:00welcome to learn computer

0:01scienceonline.com and in this video we

0:05are going to discuss what is an

0:07operating system its functions types and

0:10its importance in computer architecture

0:13and organization

0:14let us start with a simple brief

0:16introduction to the operating system

0:19an operating system is a group of

0:21software specially designed to help the

0:24user to manage and operate the computer

0:26system

0:27in other words the operating system is a

0:30type of system software that works as an

0:33interface between the system user and

0:35the computer hardware

0:37the operating system is an essential

0:39component of every computer system

0:42it is a type of system software used by

0:44the computer system itself to manage and

0:47operate the system

0:48it also helps the computer user to

0:51interact with various Hardware

0:53components that are either connected or

0:55part of the computer system

0:57an operating system performs some of the

1:00most important functions that are

1:02crucial for the operation performance

1:04and the safety of the computer system

1:07the resource management is one such

1:09important function performed by the

1:11operating system all right after this

1:14brief introduction let us now dive a bit

1:17deeper to understand what is an

1:19operating system and its importance in

1:21computer architecture and organization

1:24let us now discuss in detail what is an

1:27operating system in computer

1:29architecture the computer system

1:31basically consists of two types of

1:34components

1:35these components are first the hardware

1:38components and second the software

1:40components the computer hardware is a

1:43general term used to describe the

1:45various physical components that are

1:48essential part of the every computer

1:49system

1:50the computer hardware includes various

1:53mechanical electrical and electronics

1:57components used to build a computer

1:59system whereas the software components

2:02provide a set of instructions which

2:05directs the computer to perform a

2:07specific task

2:08in other words a software is a computer

2:11program used to communicate with

2:13computer regarding the operation that we

2:16want computer to perform

2:18the computer system needs basically two

2:21types of software components the first

2:23type of software is called an

2:25application software and the second type

2:28of software is called a system software

2:30an application software is designed to

2:33allow the computer user to perform

2:35various tasks on the computer

2:38for example Microsoft Word is the most

2:41commonly used application software for

2:43creating the text documents

2:46whereas the system software is a special

2:49type of software internally used by the

2:51computer system itself to manage and

2:54operate the computer system an operating

2:57system is the most important system

2:59software and it is an essential

3:01component of every computer

3:03when we power on and start the computer

3:05it is the operating system that gets

3:08loaded into the main memory RAM of the

3:10computer

3:11this startup operation which loads the

3:14operating system into the memory is

3:16called as computer booting process

3:19the computer user can operate the

3:21computer system only after the operating

3:23system software is fully loaded into the

3:26computer memory and it is fully

3:28operational

3:29once the operating system is fully

3:32operational the computer can be used by

3:34the user to perform various tasks on the

3:37computer

3:38the computer system booting process is

3:40managed by a special program called the

3:43bio startup routine

3:44the term BIOS stands for basic input

3:47output system the BIOS program is a type

3:50of firmware that resides into the BIOS

3:53chip placed on the computer motherboard

3:55the main function of the BIOS software

3:58is to load the operating system

4:00and therefore the BIOS comes into action

4:03each time we switch on the computer

4:06the operating system gets the control of

4:08the system after the booting process is

4:10complete let now briefly discuss some

4:14important functions performed by the

4:16operating system as discussed earlier

4:18the operating system performs several

4:21important functions

4:23the operating system functions include

4:25file management Process Management

4:28Resource Management memory management

4:31command interpreter and the system

4:34security let us now discuss some

4:37important features of the operating

4:38system

4:39the hardware interaction is the most

4:42important feature of the operating

4:43system

4:44let us discuss this topic in detail in

4:47computer architecture the operating

4:49system works as an interface between the

4:52application software and the computer

4:54hardware the application software is

4:57designed to allow the computer user to

5:00perform various operations on the

5:02computer

5:03these operations might also include some

5:06Hardware interaction for example a

5:09computer user might use the Microsoft

5:11Word program to create a text document

5:14in some cases the user might also want

5:17to use the printer connected to the

5:19system for taking the print out of the

5:21document

5:22however the application program used by

5:24the user cannot directly communicate

5:27with the computer hardware

5:29and therefore in order to communicate

5:31with Hardware the application program

5:33needs operating system to communicate

5:36with the hardware device

5:38the operating system internally makes

5:40use of another piece of system software

5:43called the device driver

5:45it is the device driver software that

5:47internally communicates with various

5:49Hardware components to execute various

5:52operations to be performed by the

5:54hardware

5:55for example when user executes the print

5:58command through an application software

6:00the operating system internally used the

6:03printer device driver to execute the

6:06print command

6:07let us now discuss different types of

6:09operating systems different types of

6:11operating systems are used depending

6:14upon the user requirements type of the

6:16Computing device and the system

6:18configuration

6:19some important types of operating system

6:21include a single user and the multi-user

6:25operating system batch operating system

6:27time sharing operating system

6:29distributed operating system Network

6:32operating system embedded operating

6:34system real-time operating system and a

6:38mobile device operating system

6:40all right let us now summarize what is

6:43an operating system the operating system

6:45is a type of system software and

6:48essential component of every computer

6:50system

6:51it internally consists of group of

6:54programs specially designed to help the
