0:15what you can do to make the most of your
0:17day trip to Palermo. I arrived by train
0:20at the central station of Palermo, so
0:22our journey begins at Mercato di
0:24Ballarò.
0:25This is Palermo's oldest and most lively
0:27street market.
0:28Here you can hear the vendors shouting
0:30and singing, and sample delicious
0:32Sicilian street food like arancini and
0:34cannoli.
0:35The vibrant colors and atmosphere make
0:38this market a feast for the senses.
1:06Next, head to the magnificent cathedral
1:08of Palermo, which is only 10 minutes
1:10away.
1:11This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a
1:13true masterpiece of Arab, Norman, and
1:16Baroque architecture.
1:18Honestly, I didn't think it had the most
1:21impressive interior, but you will
1:23understand why I'm saying this later in
1:25this video.
1:26But, you can see the graves of the kings
1:28that used to rule here, and also the
1:30tomb of Pino Puglisi, a priest who
1:33openly challenged the mafia and got
1:35killed by them.
1:38You can climb the cathedral's rooftop,
1:40which offers amazing panoramic views of
1:42the city and is fun to do.
1:59Oh.
2:21From the cathedral, we move on to the
2:23Palazzo dei Normanni.
2:25The palace itself is a blend of medieval
2:27and Renaissance styles, reflecting its
2:29evolution as a royal residence and
2:32political center.
2:34Inside, you can visit the Sala d'Ercole,
2:36which serves as the meeting room for the
2:38Sicilian Regional Assembly, making it
2:41the center of contemporary political
2:43activity in the region.
2:58Within the walls of the Palazzo dei
2:59Normanni, you will also find the
3:01Cappella Palatina, which will leave you
3:04speechless with its glittering mosaics
3:06that depict biblical scenes with vivid
3:09gold backgrounds.
3:11These mosaics were created by Byzantine
3:13artisans in the 12th century.
3:16The intricate artistry and storytelling
3:18make it a visual masterpiece.
3:21The chapel was used as the royal chapel
3:23and also features an extraordinary
3:25muqarnas ceiling, an architectural
3:28detail typically found in Islamic art,
3:31which shows that the chapel is a prime
3:33example of Palermo's unique Arab-Norman
3:35architecture.

3:59Then make your way via the Via Vittorio
4:01Emanuele to Quattro Canti, the
4:03crossroads of Palermo.
4:05This Baroque square with its symmetrical
4:07fountains and statues symbolizes the
4:09union of the city's four districts.
4:17Nearby, you'll find Piazza Pretoria, one
4:19of Palermo's most iconic squares, also
4:22known as the square of shame due to the
4:24controversial nudity of the Renaissance
4:27statues of the Fontana Pretoria.
4:30The square is lined with beautiful
4:31palazzi and the Chiesa di Santa Caterina
4:34d'Alessandria.
4:41Adjacent is the beautiful Piazza
4:43Bellini, home to the Chiesa di Santa
4:45Maria dell'Ammiraglio, also known as La
4:48Martorana.
4:49The Chiesa e il Monastero di Santa
4:51Caterina d'Alessandria and the Chiesa di
4:53San Cataldo.
4:55Admire the bell tower of La Martorana
4:57and also visit its interior for its
4:59dazzling Byzantine mosaics, which are
5:02among the oldest in Palermo.
5:11Visiting the Chiesa e il Monastero di
5:12Santa Caterina d'Alessandria will bring
5:15you breathtaking Baroque interiors
5:16adorned with intricate stuccos,
5:18frescoes, and marble decorations. You
5:21can climb the stairs to the rooftop
5:23offering stunning views and also visit
5:26the monastery.
6:00Now for a more modern tribute, visit the
6:03Morale Falcone Borsellino. The striking
6:05mural honors two anti-mafia judges who
6:08gave their lives for justice. From there
6:10you can walk to the Teatro Massimo,
6:13Italy's largest opera house and a true
6:15architectural masterpiece. Even if you
6:17can't catch a performance, the grandeur
6:19of this building is worth admiring.
6:23And then it is time to return to the
6:25train station.
