0:12we're going to talk up my a new lecture
0:14just for Ted and I'm going to show you
0:15some illusions that we've created for
0:17Ted and I'm going to try and relate this
0:19to happiness and what I was thinking
0:21about with happiness is what gives
0:23happiness or happiness which I equate
0:26with joy in my particular area and I
0:29think there's something very fundamental
0:31and I was thinking about this and it's
0:34in terms of both Illusions and movies
0:38that we go see and jokes and magic shows
0:41is that there's something about these
0:43things where our expectations are
0:46violated in some sort of pleasing way
0:48you go see a movie and it has an
0:51unexpected twist something that you
0:53didn't expect and you find a joyful
0:55experience you look at the sort of
0:57Illusions in my book and it's not is
1:00what you'd expect and there's something
1:01joyful about it and it's the same thing
1:03with jokes and and all these sort of
1:06things so what I'm going to try and do
1:08in my lecture is go a little bit further
1:11and see if I can violate your
1:13expectations in a pleasing way I mean
1:16sometimes expectations that are violated
1:17are not pleasant but I'm going to try to
1:19do it in a pleasant way in a very Primal
1:21way so I can make the audience here
1:24happy so I'm going to show you some ways
1:27that we can violate your expectations
1:30first of all I want to show you a
1:31particular illusion here I want you
1:34first of all when it pops up on the
1:35screen to notice that the two holes are
1:37perpendicular to each other these are
1:40all perceptual tricks these are real
1:42objects that I'm going to show
1:52you now I'm going to show you how it was
1:55done I've looped the film here so you
1:57can get a very interesting experience I
1:59want want you to see how this illusion
2:01is constructed and it's going to rotate
2:04so you see that it's an inside out thing
2:06now watch as it rotates back how quickly
2:09your perception
2:11snaps okay now watch it as it rotates
2:14back again and this is a very bright
2:16audience all right see if you can stop
2:19it from happening even though you know
2:20100% it's truth bang you can't undo
2:26it what does that tell you about
2:29yourself
2:30we're going to do it again no doubt
2:33about it see if you can stop it from
2:36happening no it's
2:40difficult and we can violate your
2:43expectations in a whole variety of ways
2:45about representation about shape about
2:48color and so forth and it's very Primal
2:50it's interesting question to ponder why
2:53these things um we find these things
2:57joyful why would we find that joyful so
2:59here's here something that Lionel did a
3:01while ago I like these sort of little
3:02things like
3:05this again this is not an optical trick
3:08this is this is what you would
3:26see in other words it's not a camera cut
3:30it's a perceptual
3:41trick okay we can violate your
3:43expectations about
3:45shape how does that
3:58work
4:03we can violate your expectations on
4:06representation what an image
4:08represents what do you see
4:11here how many of you here see
4:18dolphins raise your hand if you see
4:21dolphins okay those people who have
4:23raised their hands afterwards the rest
4:25of the audience go talk to them all
4:27right actually this is the best example
4:30of priming by experience that I know if
4:33you are a child under the age of 10 who
4:37haven't been ruined
4:39yet you will look at this image and see
4:42dolphins now some of you adults here are
4:44saying what dolphins what dolphins but
4:46in fact if you reverse the figure ground
4:49in other words the dark areas here I
4:51forgot to ask for a pointer but if you
4:54reverse you'll see a whole series of
4:56little Dolphins by the way if you're
4:57also a student at Caltech they tend also
4:59see to just see the dolphins it's it's
5:02it is based on
5:06experience now something like this can
5:09be used because this is after all a talk
5:11about design too this was done by Sachi
5:13and Sai and they actually got away with
5:16this ad in Australia so if you look at
5:18this ad for a beer all those people are
5:22in sort of provoca of positions but they
5:25got it past and actually won the Cleo
5:27Awards so it was funny how you can do
5:30these things remember that sort of
5:35um this is a joke I did all right when
5:40um the the Florida ballot was going
5:42around you know count the dots for Gore
5:44count the dots for Bush count him
5:49again you can violate your expectations
5:53about experience here is a
5:56um an outside water fountain
6:00that I created with some friends of mine
6:02but you can stop the water in drops and
6:04then actually make all the
6:06drops
6:09levitate so this is something that we're
6:11building for you know amusement parks
6:13and that kind of stuff now let's take a
6:15static image can you see this do you see
6:19the middle section moving down and the
6:21outer sections moving up it's completely
6:24static it's a static image does there
6:26how many people see this
6:28illusion
6:30but it's completely
6:32static all right now when it's
6:35interesting that when we look at an
6:36image we see you know color depth
6:41texture and you can look at this whole
6:43scene and analyze it you can see the
6:45woman is en closer than the wall and so
6:47forth but the whole thing is actually
6:50flat it's painted it's Trump ly and it
6:53was such a good Trump ly that people got
6:55irritated when they tried to talk to the
6:57woman and she wouldn't respond
7:02now you can make design
7:05mistakes like this building in New York
7:08so that when
7:10you see it from this side it looks like
7:13the balconies tilt up and when you walk
7:16around to the other side and look looks
7:17like the
7:19balconies go down so there are cases
7:22where you have mistakes in design then
7:24incorporate Illusions or you take this
7:27particular unretouched photograph
7:33now interestingly enough I get a lot of
7:36emails from people who say is there any
7:39perceptual difference between males and
7:42females and I really say no I mean women
7:45can navigate through the world just as
7:46well as males can and why wouldn't they
7:49however this is the one illusion that
7:51women can consistently do better than
7:54males in matching which head because
7:56they rely on fashion cues they can match
7:58the Hat
8:02okay now getting to a part I want to
8:04show design in Illusions I believe that
8:07the first example of Illusions being
8:11used purposely was by DCI in this
8:14anamorphic image of an
8:16eye so that when you saw from one little
8:19angle was like this and this little
8:23technique got popular in the 16th
8:24century the 17th century to disguise
8:27hidden meanings where you could flip the
8:29image and see it from one little point
8:33of view like this so these are early
8:36incorporations of Illusions brought to a
8:39sort of High Point with h hine's
8:41ambassadors H Hine worked for Henry VII
8:45this was hung on a on a wall where you
8:47walk down from a stair and you could see
8:49this hidden
8:52skull all right now I'm going to show
8:54you some designers who work with
8:57Illusions to give that element of
8:59surprise one of my favorite is Scott Kim
9:03I work with Scott to create some
9:05Illusions for
9:07Ted that I hope you will enjoy we have
9:10one here on Ted and
9:27happiness okay now now Arthur hasn't
9:30talked yet but his is going to be a
9:32delightful talk and he has some of his
9:34really fantastic uh machines
9:37outside and so we C uh Scott created
9:42this
9:42wonderful tribute to Arthur
9:49[Applause]
9:55gansen well there's analog and digital
10:04thought that was appropriate
10:09here and figure goes to
10:24ground and for the
10:28musicians
10:46and of course since happiness we want
10:48Joy to the
10:57World now another great designer he's
11:00very well known in Japan Sho
11:03fakuda all right and he just builds some
11:05fantastic things this is simply
11:08amazing this is a pile of
11:13junk that when you view it from one
11:15particular
11:22angle you see its reflection in the
11:24mirror as a perfect
11:27piano
11:49pianist transforms to a
11:54violinist this is really
11:57wild this is assemblage of forks knives
12:00and spoons and various Cutlery welded
12:09together you at a shadow of a
12:14motorcycle you learn something in the
12:17sort of thing that I do which is there
12:19are people out there with a lot of time
12:21on their
12:25hands Ken Nolton do wonderful comp
12:28composite
12:30images like creating Jac custo out of
12:33seashells unretouched seashells but just
12:35by rearranging them he did Einstein out
12:39of dice because after all Einstein said
12:42God does not play dice with the universe
12:45bird Herzog out of um unretouched
12:48keyboards will schz crossword
12:52puzzle John cedarest does these
12:54wonderful um Trump
12:57ly cabins now I'm going to skip ahead
13:00because I'm sort of running ahead I want
13:01to show you quickly what I've um
13:05created um some new type of Illusions
13:09I've done something with um taking the
13:11Pixar type Illusions so you see these
13:14kids that same size
13:16here running down the hall the two
13:19tabletops are the same size they're
13:21looking out two directions at once you
13:24have a larger piece fitting in within
13:27smaller
13:31and that's something for you to think
13:32about all right so you see larger pieces
13:35fitting in within smaller pieces here
13:38does everyone see that which is
13:42impossible you can see the two kids are
13:44looking out simultaneously out of two
13:46different directions at
13:51once now can you believe these two
13:53tabletops are the same size and shape
13:56they are so if you measured them they
13:58would
14:01be and as I say those two figures are
14:04identical in size and
14:07shape all right and it's interesting by
14:10doing these
14:12um this in this sort of rendered fashion
14:14how much stronger the Illusions are in
14:17any case I hope this has brought you a
14:18little joy and happiness and if you're
14:20interested in seeing more cool effects
14:23see me outside be happy to show you lots
14:25of things that was
14:27great
