0:10what is moral identity

0:12the term moral here is used as an

0:15adjective describing the noun

0:17identity in this context the term moral

0:20relates to the principles of what is

0:22considered right or wrong behavior

0:25on the other hand identity is simply

0:28what you think about yourself and what

0:30aspects in living your life

0:32are important to you from the given

0:34descriptions

0:35of the individual terms moral and

0:37identity

0:38it could be described that moral

0:40identity is the level of personal

0:42importance that you give in what you

0:45deem as acceptable or unacceptable

0:48behavior

0:49in this discussion we will investigate

0:51the factors that help

0:52form the filipino moral identity we will

0:56also learn

0:56about the strengths and weaknesses of

0:59identified filipino characteristics

1:02psychologist educator and former

1:04chairperson

1:05of the commission and higher education

1:08dr patricia linen in her 1994 study

1:11wrote

1:12that the strengths and weaknesses of the

1:14filipino character

1:15are rooted in factors such as the home

1:18environment

1:19the social environment culture and

1:22language

1:22history the educational system religion

1:26the economic and the political

1:28environment mass media

1:30and the country's leaders and role

1:32models how do these factors

1:34shape the filipinos concept of right or

1:37wrong behavior

1:38perhaps the most influential factor in

1:40shaping the filipino moral identity

1:43is the family in filipino culture family

1:46bond is not just within the core family

1:48of a father

1:49mother and siblings bonds with extended

1:52families

1:52such as grandparents aunts and uncles as

1:55well as cousins no matter how distant

1:57the degree

1:58is not only strong but is encouraged to

2:01be maintained

2:02and strengthened moreover developing a

2:04close relationship with extended

2:06families

2:07cover both from the mother and father's

2:09side according to lee kuanan

2:11early on filipino children are taught to

2:13value family

2:14and give it primary importance another

2:17factor that

2:18influences filipino moral identity is

2:20the social environment

2:22filipino social environment is

2:24characterized by depending on one

2:26another to survive

2:27and since the family is also a

2:29filipino's foundation for social life

2:32dependence on relationships and the

2:34struggle for survival

2:36make filipinos group oriented filipinos

2:39are also

2:39cheerful and fun-loving even in the most

2:42trying time

2:43filipinos will always find a reason to

2:45smile or laugh

2:47philippine fiestas and social gatherings

2:49demonstrate pinoy joy

2:51and humor we can laugh with those who

2:53love and those we hate

2:55and we can make jokes about our good and

2:57bad fortune

3:00is one of the strengths of the filipino

3:03character what

3:03is character a definition of character

3:06fitting to our discussion

3:07is from iran webster that states it is a

3:10complex or

3:11interrelated parts of mental and ethical

3:14traits

3:15marking and often individualizing a

3:17person group or nation the filipino

3:19character of pakistan

3:23openness helpfulness generosity the

3:26practice of bayanihan

3:28or mutual assistance the famous filipino

3:31hospitality

3:32and our love for family however extreme

3:35personalism and extreme

3:37family centeredness are also weaknesses

3:39of the filipino character

3:41in her study dr iguana noted the

3:44filipinos function in the world by

3:46personally relating to things events and

3:49people

3:49thus making it difficult to separate

3:52objective tasks

3:53and emotional involvement this is where

3:55the palakkasan system spring from

3:58for example family and friends are given

4:00preference

4:01in hiring in the delivery of services

4:04and even invoting someone

4:05into government office personal

4:07connections also make it difficult to

4:09turn down requests

4:11of any kind the kanyakanya syndrome is

4:13also related to extreme

4:15personalism and extreme family

4:18centeredness where self-interest

4:20is supreme the kanyakanya syndrome

4:22dampens our sense of community

4:24and cooperation and we trample on others

4:27rights as

4:27a result you should know by now though

4:30that the filipino concept of self

4:32actually includes one's family as well

4:34as an in-group or an

4:36inner circle thus the drive to fulfill

4:38self-interest

4:40is a manifestation of extreme

4:42personalism and extreme

4:44family centeredness the family may be a

4:46source of strength for filipinos

4:49but extreme family centeredness is also

4:52our flaw

4:53since family is valued above all concern

4:56for the community and for the common

4:58good take lesser

4:59importance extreme family centeredness

5:02is manifested in our political system

5:04where political dynasties lord over

5:07elected government

5:08posts starting from the barangay level

5:11to the city

5:11province and all the way to national

5:14positions

5:15dr li kuanan also observed that the

5:18joyful

5:18and fun-loving filipino has a tendency

5:21to be superficial

5:22and somewhat flighty this means that in

5:25times of crisis

5:26either personal or social there is a

5:29lack of analysis

5:30or reflection a manifestation of this

5:33lack of analysis and reflection is the

5:35expression

5:36madaling makalimot where filipinos are

5:38characterized as a nation with a short

5:41memory

5:42a nation who forgets the mistakes made

5:44or the ills

5:46done to the people and thus filipinos

5:48tend to commit the same mistakes

5:50again ever wonder why tropos or

5:52traditional politicians are re-elected

5:54into office

5:55one factor is a filipino's short-term

5:58memory

5:59and forgiving nature a majority of

6:01filipinos

6:02never learn his or her political lessons

6:05another factor that shapes the filipinos

6:08moral identity

6:09is culture and language the filipino

6:11culture is a mix of both eastern

6:14and western cultures the beliefs and

6:16traditions of pre-colonial philippines

6:18were mainly

6:19indigenous malay heritage and while the

6:21natives occupying the different parts of

6:24the archipelago were subjugated by one

6:26colonizer

6:27after another the natives ancient

6:29beliefs and traditions have mostly been

6:31merged

6:32with colonizers and eventually evolved

6:35into what we now know

6:37as the filipino culture meanwhile in

6:39language

6:40though the main elements are still

6:42filipino in english

6:43the way pinoys speak these days is a mix

6:46and mash of foreign

6:48languages having japanese and korean

6:50expressions

6:51spicing it filipino culture and language

6:54show openness to foreign elements

6:57however lee kuan and observed

6:59that the filipino trait of openness and

7:01acceptance to foreign cultural elements

7:03is also paired with a trait of having no

7:07basic consciousness of a cultural core

7:10of being a filipino the importance of

7:12english language in our educational

7:14system

7:15even after we gained independence from

7:17the us

7:18and even before english was considered a

7:21global language

7:22is a manifestation of the filipino's

7:25very favorable perception of america

7:27have you noticed the wider filipino

7:30following of hollywood movies and actors

7:32as well as foreign films as compared to

7:35filipino films

7:36filipinos spanning generations wildly

7:39followed

7:40anime mexican novellas as well as

7:43taiwanese and korean drama

7:45over local tv series there is also our

7:48love for foreign music and singers

7:50over local talents in fact foreign music

7:53icons helped

7:54shape each generation of filipinos pinoy

7:57boomers had elvis presley and the

7:59beatles

8:00pinoy gen xers had michael jackson in

8:02madonna millennials

8:03mariah carey and beyonce and the iconic

8:06example for filipinos of his generation

8:09is the k-pop scholars including liquinan

8:12attributed the filipino preference for

8:14all things foreign over one's own

8:17to the history of colonization and

8:19oppression

8:20thus the term filipino colonial

8:23mentality where filipino creation

8:25product and even the way of life is

8:27deemed poorly made

8:29inferior or low standard compared to

8:31those from other countries

8:33particularly western countries an

8:35inferiority complex that is still very

8:38much

8:38present in filipinos today the filipino

8:41elites

8:42are of no help in setting an example of

8:45overcoming colonial mentality

8:47as most are very westernized in their

8:49ways

8:50so too are the people involved in

8:52philippine mass media

8:54such as the broadcast showbiz and ads

8:57industry

8:57the created trends of these industries

9:00reinforce

9:01filipino colonial mentality other highly

9:04instrumental factors

9:05in character formation and consequently

9:08filipino moral identity are the

9:10philippine educational system

9:12and religion schools and religion are

9:15both

9:16authoritarian systems early on as

9:18children

9:19filipinos learn in school and in church

9:22that being well behaved and obedient

9:24is positively reinforced and the

9:26opposite behavior

9:27is punished these authoritarian systems

9:30help build resilience but at the same

9:33time it also

9:34teaches passivity and conformity as well

9:37as a fatalistic attitude the filipinos

9:39bahalana mindset

9:41is an example of our fatalistic attitude

9:43however

9:44there is a positive side to this trait

9:46because for filipinos

9:48a bahalana attitude can also be a

9:51pampalacha

9:52or a kickstarter to move the filipino

9:54into action

9:55filipino resilience is definitely a lot

9:58of help

9:58given the philippines economic

10:00environment the economic environment is

10:02another element that dr lee kuan and

10:04identified where filipino moral identity

10:07is rooted the philippine economic

10:09environment for its part is also

10:11highly affected by factors such as

10:14overpopulation

10:15mismatch between skills and job

10:18requirement

10:19and immense corruption in government

10:21among others

10:22the hard life experienced by filipinos

10:25in the philippines

10:26pushed a lot of pinoys to take risks

10:29such as

10:30leaving their families to work abroad

10:32hard work

10:33industry and the ability to survive are

10:36strong

10:36filipino traits visa or proverbs

10:43aptly depicts our survival instinct

10:46we can endure make do and get by on so

10:49little

10:50while looking forward to the coming days

10:52this trait

10:53is a reason why filipinos can carry on

10:56through harsh

10:57economic and social circumstance an

10:59example of which

11:01is pinoy resilience amidst the

11:03uncertainties that this covet pandemic

11:05inflicted unfortunately the country's

11:08political environment

11:10as well as government structures and

11:12systems are fraught

11:14with problems for instance the fact

11:17the political power is mainly in the

11:19hands of elites

11:21as well as having no strong government

11:23presence

11:24particularly in the most basic

11:26government unit like your barangay

11:28your city or your province enhance the

11:31filipinos

11:32already extreme family centeredness

11:35how is your barangay captain and

11:36kagawads related to each other

11:39or to your city mayor or counselors and

11:41how are they

11:42also related to your governor or board

11:44members or your representatives in

11:47congress

11:47are government services in your area

11:50given fairly without bias

11:52the continued rule of the country's

11:54elite can also be attributed to the

11:56filipinos high respect

11:58for authority our high respect for

12:00authority

12:01also led to a character of general

12:03passivity

12:04and lacking initiative for instance

12:07there is a strong reliance on leaders

12:10and government to solve the nation's

12:12problems

12:13but filipinos also do not feel the need

12:16to initiate

12:17or contribute to the solution notice how

12:19filipinos dispose of garbage

12:21this negative filipino trait is also

12:24related to our lack of discipline

12:26notice our road traffic problem

12:29filipinos expect

12:30the government to solve our monstrous

12:32traffic jam

12:33yet rules and regulations are blatantly

12:36ignored

12:36every day filipinos lean on leaders

12:39and role models starting from authority

12:42figures in our families and extending to

12:44authority figures

12:46in the society thus when leaders or role

12:48models

12:49violate the law and there is lack of

12:51accountability for those who broke the

12:53law

12:54the level of personal importance that

12:56filipinos give

12:58in the goodness or badness of one's

13:00behavior

13:01is hugely negatively affected

13:04the filipino character is a

13:06contradiction for example

13:08our bayanihan culture co-exists

13:10comfortably with our

13:11kanyakanya syndrome many of our strong

13:14points are

13:15linked to our weaknesses despite these

13:17weaknesses however

13:19there is still much good in the filipino

13:21character what about you

13:23what positive filipino trait can you

13:25most relate to

13:26and how has this trait helped make you

13:28become a better person
