0:05hello my dear students

0:07good morning and welcome

0:10today i will talk about the strengths

0:12and weaknesses of the filipino moral

0:14character so i hope that you will listen

0:17well and i hope that you will learn a

0:19lot of valuable information and truths

0:22about our own

0:24uh traits as filipinos

0:26so let's go ahead and talk about the

0:28important cultural values or practices

0:31that we filipinos have i have prepared

0:3320 so 10 positive and 10

0:36not so positive traits that we have so

0:39i'll start with the strength or the

0:41positive first

0:43all right the first one here is

0:45respectful

0:47this is

0:48very well known to all of us we use po

0:51and oppo when speaking with an elderly

0:54as a form of respect to them and also

0:56pagmamano um it may not be for all

0:59families now but most filipinos would

1:02still do this blessing the hand as shown

1:05in the photo here

1:06uh usually done to the elderlies as well

1:10as a form of greeting

1:12so that's showing our

1:14uh respect to them

1:17very truly filipino

1:19all right next we have hospitable we are

1:22known for our filipino hospitality and

1:25it says here that for filipinos it is a

1:28pleasure to accommodate guests in their

1:30homes

1:31guests visitors

1:33our friends families relatives coming

1:36from other places

1:39also foreigners we are very hospitable

1:42to foreigners as well

1:44and another thing that i'd like to share

1:46about our uniqueness when it comes to

1:49our hospitality is that as compared with

1:52other countries i'm talking about for

1:54example countries in north america usa

1:57canada

1:58and such

1:59um

1:59[Music]

2:01it is not a practice for you to just

2:03visit the home of your friend or your

2:05family without informing them first that

2:08you are coming but here in the

2:09philippines

2:10we will gladly do that right and we are

2:14going we are welcomed

2:16with filipino warmth even if we did not

2:19um give advance notice that we're coming

2:22that's very okay for filipinos

2:25so we are very hospitable and

2:28this is a long discussion because

2:30there's so many things that i can think

2:31of when we talk about hospitality of the

2:33filipino people

2:36especially in the provinces or those

2:38people older than us those generation

2:41whenever there are guests coming in

2:43their homes

2:44they would even take out the special

2:47dishes the special china special

2:50glasswares

2:51and whatever things they have at home

2:54so that this

2:56stuff will be used by the guests

2:59they really have that special

3:02dishes

3:03for our for the visitors and even take

3:06out the

3:08the new and you know

3:10a very clean linens if the guest decides

3:14to stay for the night so that's how we

3:18that's how hospitable we are here

3:20in the philippines or

3:22as filipinos

3:24and i hope that you can you know you can

3:27relate to that still

3:30okay

3:31next we have resourceful

3:33so filipinos find way to improvise

3:36do you believe that you are resourceful

3:39filipinos would always think of creative

3:42ways uh you know to for example to fix

3:44something if there's if something is

3:46wrong so very creative or compaga in

3:49other words in our own language

3:52we are always very resourceful

3:56especially during unexpected situations

3:58and you know temporary

4:00um we can provide temporary and quick

4:04solutions to such problems there are

4:07such situations

4:10all right so we are resourceful

4:14next we have here close-knit with family

4:18okay we always understand that that we

4:20are very close to our families filipinos

4:23are value oriented you know value

4:25families

4:26and not only our immediate families but

4:29even extended families at some homes the

4:32extended families are even living in one

4:34home

4:35not just because of poverty yes it could

4:37be but aside from that uh even on

4:40celebrations we don't want to miss out

4:43anybody who's part of the family we

4:46we value traditions when it comes to

4:49family gatherings

4:51and you know um we always we take care

4:54of our old people as well that's uh one

4:57of the things that we

5:00we take pride on

5:01right

5:03okay so next we have education is highly

5:07valued

5:08of the filipinos so families

5:11make great sacrifices to educate their

5:14children

5:15and even the children would really want

5:17to go to school would really want to

5:19study

5:20majority of filipinos love to study it's

5:23really inculcated in our culture it's

5:26cultural and um

5:28for other families as mentioned here

5:30they go great lengths of sacrifices for

5:33example for a filipino farmer they would

5:36even sell their cows or carabaos or

5:41their source of livelihood

5:43just so that their kid can go to college

5:47their children can get the proper

5:49education

5:51right and we have the belief the

5:52filipinos believe that the gateway to a

5:56great life or good life in the future is

5:58through

6:00having a diploma or a good education

6:04so

6:05that's something very unique about us we

6:08don't just um

6:09stop in high school we would always a to

6:12go to college

6:14and higher education

6:17so look at

6:18this to your great students

6:21so you are very

6:23blessed and fortunate that you are in

6:26school and your parents are working very

6:29hard and you yourselves most filipinos

6:32would study

6:34while our world work while studying

6:38so

6:41next we have hard working

6:44hard working okay in the photo here

6:47it's showing the hard work of the people

6:49while planting rice but not only that

6:51there are so many ways that the

6:53filipinos

6:55are shown to be

6:57hard-working people

6:59and even they go great lengths also in

7:01their hard work

7:03i'm talking about

7:04having

7:06overseas filipino workers they would

7:08sacrifice a lot of their you know of

7:11their freedom sacrifice a lot of

7:15being away from families for many months

7:18and sometimes years

7:20they would sacrifice getting

7:22[Music]

7:23homesick

7:25right

7:26just so that they can provide a better

7:28life for their families and abroad

7:31they're always um commended to be people

7:34who works very well

7:37very hard working among filipinos

7:41all right so next another one is

7:43friendly and easy to get along with do

7:45you do you believe in that

7:47yes filipinos are very friendly it's not

7:50difficult to approach a filipino

7:53they was not that's not but you

7:56filipinos always have a ready smile to

7:59any stranger whether local

8:02whether foreign like what's shown in the

8:04photo here they're just inside the

8:06jitney right but it seems that um

8:09there's friendliness going on in there

8:11so we are easy to get along with our

8:14filipinos are

8:15very trusting people

8:18so

8:19there you go

8:20um

8:20[Music]

8:22to approach a filipino especially if you

8:25go abroad and you can find one person

8:28filipino you can always approach that

8:30person and you'll sure that if she or he

8:34is filipino you'll get a smile and

8:36you'll get along

8:38easily well all right so next we have

8:42community spirit we have the very well

8:45known by any han

8:47okay and the photos here this was the

8:49bayanihan in the past we're in

8:53men are helping each other in

8:55transferring this baha'i kubo to another

8:58place this is where the word bayanihan

9:01actually started

9:02and you know there are many forms of

9:04bayaniha now in our modern times in

9:06another photo this could be we're in

9:09there helping

9:10this

9:11vehicle

9:12but aside from that especially during

9:14the pandemic filipinos would help each

9:17other

9:18uh would give food or whatever they have

9:21um

9:22to their neighbors to the strangers to

9:25just about anybody you can filipinos are

9:28always ready to help so that's our

9:31community spirit

9:33that's a very good trait that we should

9:35never um erase in our culture

9:40then the next one is religious actually

9:42filipinos are very religious not only

9:44christianity

9:46well christianity is very broad but

9:50specifically the catholic faith

9:53has become a part of the filipino

9:55culture and if you i know that you would

9:57agree that a lot of our holidays here

10:00are

10:01religion related

10:03so

10:04filipinos would practice traditions and

10:09not only that for majority if not all

10:12filipinos we believe in god most of us

10:15believe in a higher being

10:17right so whether

10:19whether what kind of denomination of

10:22christianity you belong to

10:24we

10:25respect that

10:27and we also have

10:28you know we we practice our beliefs

10:31and not only for christians but also for

10:33muslims as well

10:35so we are very religious

10:39okay next one we have fiesta spirit

10:43right we love celebrations our provinces

10:47has their own

10:49festivities

10:51we have different festivals here in the

10:54philippines we have that fiesta spirit

10:57filipinos love celebrations and along

10:59with the celebrations of course bonding

11:01with people and

11:03some toast food

11:05about most celebrations if it's like

11:07it's not going to be a celebration here

11:09in the philippines or for a filipino if

11:12there's no food involved

11:14do you agree

11:15so

11:16especially in the provinces celebrations

11:18or fiestas are

11:20taken seriously they would really fatten

11:23a cow or a pig prior to this celebration

11:27so that they can cook this

11:30and they would have to

11:32have a very

11:34festive

11:36um occasion during that time and this is

11:39also religion related fiesta

11:51okay so

11:52that's about it for the positive ones

11:55we are not

11:57[Music]

11:58we are not free from weaknesses as well

12:00or the negative traits that we have or

12:02not so good traits that we have that i

12:05hope we can

12:06um improve in the next

12:09lifetime or in the next generation so

12:12you you are the newer generation so if

12:14you see that

12:15these are weaknesses or these are

12:17negative ones so maybe you can do

12:19something about it so let me present the

12:2110

12:22um weaknesses that i prepared here the

12:24first one is a very well-known

12:27procrastination

12:29or the manana habit or we call it

12:31mamayana habit or in the modern time

12:34it's called

12:36weight loss habit

12:38you know younger generations would

12:40always say

12:41when their parents called them to do

12:42something they would say wait lang or

12:44mamayana wait long wait now and all

12:47and this means that we always have we

12:49always put off for a later time what we

12:52can do for now

12:53and the bad thing about this is that on

12:56a later time we will be stuck with work

12:59and giving us so much stress because you

13:01haven't done something now and then mama

13:04yamuna go in then later on

13:08gagawin so i hope that you students will

13:10not practice procrastination

13:13as soon as you get the time to do

13:15something

13:16then do it immediately be productive

13:19immediately so that you will not be

13:20stressed out later on okay this is

13:23something that we need to improve on on

13:24the procrastination

13:26and next we have the baha lana

13:29okay keep calm and baha'u'llah see

13:31batman you will always hear that for

13:34filipinos it means that we try we tend

13:37to leave everything by chance to chance

13:39or to laugh

13:41and what happens here is that

13:44you filipinos would not strive very hard

13:47to achieve that something that they

13:48would want to happen in their lives

13:51because they will just say okay

13:55all right so no specific

13:58goal no specific

14:00um

14:01objective for anything to to better the

14:04life of the filipino but

14:06he'll just say baha lena

14:08and it works for him for many many

14:11generations

14:13all right so next we have the nina's

14:17you know a philippine grass that easily

14:19gets um you know extinguished by fire so

14:25it's

14:26so i call this here unsustained

14:28enthusiasm

14:30it's one of the negative traits of

14:32filipinos wherein we get we get to

14:36to be excited so easily

14:39so excited with a project

14:41with an activity that we have in mind we

14:43are so enthusiastic

14:46and the problem there is that enthusiasm

14:49that eagerness and willingness to do

14:51that project died down so easily as well

14:55just like the cocoon so it's not

14:57sustainable

15:01afterwards because excited

15:04and then

15:06excitement hindi so sustain especially

15:21are you like that i hope not

15:25okay so next we have the colonial

15:27mentality filipinos prefer and love

15:31foreign made products whatever products

15:34it may be food clothing

15:37whatever apparels

15:39bags shoes whatever kind as long as it's

15:42made from somewhere else filipinos would

15:45sure love that

15:47okay

15:48so

15:49that's not very good because it affects

15:51our economy so instead of loving our own

15:54products

15:56uh filipinos would prefer to buy

15:58imported products

16:01okay so that's colonial mentality next

16:03would be

16:04crab mentality i know that you know this

16:07and this is quite popular here in our

16:09country where in filipinos like to pull

16:12each other down

16:14if you can see in the photo here let me

16:16read oh no you don't where do you think

16:19you're going come back down here where

16:21the rest of us belong

16:23so filipinos don't like to see a

16:26neighbor or a friend or a colleague or

16:28other filipino people

16:30to succeed more than the success that

16:32that person is enjoying

16:42it pictures a crab in a bucket if you

16:46can

16:47you know

16:48uh try to imagine that and i'm sure that

16:51you've seen this scenario already

16:57so the thing about a filipino who has

17:00this crab mentality is that this person

17:03is very

17:05insecure

17:06okay so very insecure not confident that

17:10he or she can also achieve something

17:12good or better so that's why

17:15this person pull the other person down

17:18or say something negative to the other

17:20person so that the other person would

17:22lose heart and would not

17:24try to achieve that good thing that he

17:27is planning to achieve so i hope you

17:29students don't have this crap

17:31mentalities

17:34we are very known for this

17:37and um it will start from you now

17:40that with your classmates now you can

17:42help each other not cheat not copy

17:45answers from your classmates but you

17:47know motivate each other

17:50you know offer some solutions if your

17:53classmates have problems offer to teach

17:55your classmate if there is something

17:57that he or she finds difficult and you

17:59know that you know it

18:01so just you know be kind you have to

18:04really try to eliminate

18:07this crap mentality and eventually i

18:10know that we will succeed on this one

18:17[Music]

18:30and then we have here the pride and

18:31arrogance the filipinos don't like the

18:33idea of being defeated or embarrassed

18:38this was popularly called a more propio

18:41the spanish word for pride

18:44so uh some

18:46fights you know street fights

18:49you know are rooted

18:51with this case

19:00and another thing for the pride and

19:02arrogance

19:03have you noticed that it's very

19:05difficult for filipinos to say sorry or

19:08to apologize when he or she has done

19:11something bad or wrong to other people

19:14it's difficult for a filipino person to

19:17say

19:18i apologize or say i'm very sorry

19:21what a filipino would do is that ah baba

19:24we

19:25[Music]

19:33inaudible the gesture of actually saying

19:36sorry it's kind of difficult for a

19:38filipino person

19:40and so we try to practice that as well

19:43we just we have to say sorry

19:45try to eliminate pride and arrogance

19:50okay so next we have

19:53i got this in the photo

19:56no see so are you no see so what is nosy

19:59in the photo here

20:01uh that explains a lot so filipinos like

20:04to engage in gossips likes to listen and

20:07believe hear says

20:10right uh very nosy we try to even if

20:13strap

20:16was happening you tried to listen

20:18um that's very common to filipinos but

20:21that's very negative that's not good and

20:24with this filipinos also are so easy to

20:28to form speculations in their minds if

20:31they see people talking or whatever

20:33actions that they feel that you know

20:36something fishy again

20:39filipino which is not good

20:41right

20:43and this is so true in the provinces

20:46we're in the you know the the parents or

20:49the mothers the housewives don't have

20:52anything to do

20:53so they would gather around during

20:55siesta time

20:57and do this stuff the gossiping thing

21:00and this will cause fights as well

21:02and chaos in the community this is not

21:04good so don't ever try to imitate this

21:08kind of trait of the filipinos all right

21:11students

21:12okay so next we have show-off

21:15yeah filipinos would spend beyond their

21:17means what do you mean by that for the

21:19purpose of showing off

21:21so an example for example you imagine a

21:24grand wedding

21:25everybody everyone's

21:27invited

21:29the close friends the immediate family

21:32extended family families from other

21:35towns families from other cities

21:38friends of friends

21:41co-workers co-workers of the extended

21:44family

21:45so see

21:46a lot are invited making sure nobody is

21:50left behind because we love celebrations

21:52right and we are close family knit kind

21:55of people so that's why we would make

21:57sure that when we have celebrations or

22:00occasions like such as a wedding

22:01everyone is invited the thing about this

22:04is that even if

22:07the couple or the family truly cannot

22:10afford that kind of of celebration

22:13they would still

22:14the bad thing is borrow money from

22:17someone else so that they can pull off

22:19that grand wedding that they have in

22:21mind

22:23and of course after the wedding the

22:25couple

22:26will be left with debts to pay instead

22:29of just having a small celebration

22:33and then

22:36it's not really happening for a typical

22:38filipino a typical filipino would really

22:41do great lengths just so that they can

22:44show off

22:46all right so it's part of their pride

22:48and arrogance as well

22:52okay so next one is

23:01a death of

23:03um you know gratitude or a debt of good

23:05will you know when you do something when

23:07somebody does something good to you you

23:10have that uttana up to that person so

23:12the beneficiary of a good deal has to

23:15repay the favor with another favor and

23:18the thing with autumn

23:19it doesn't

23:20get paid for a lifetime

23:25it will always be forever you will

23:27always think about it it's really

23:29cultural

23:32um

23:34so later on when that person needs

23:36something you would really want out of

23:39guilt you would really want to give in

23:41to that thing

23:45and

23:47this will be a very

23:49long discussion maybe in class

23:51because even in our politics

23:59look it in the photo here don't forget

24:01us

24:02so our the parents the filipino parents

24:04are also expecting

24:06their children to be paying this depth

24:10later on

24:15in the future when in fact

24:17it's not really your obligation so to

24:19speak but you know a morality issue of

24:22course you don't want to

24:23um to leave your elderly behind the man

24:27but yeah that's one thing with uttan

24:29naloop it never

24:40on it

24:41however

24:42there are also negative things about

24:44this so that's why that's a negative

24:49uh

24:50the filipino person with uttarangal

24:52seems to be in prison with that

24:55and another

24:57negative nato

25:02[Music]

25:07something that it's beyond what you can

25:10do peroga with more because

25:12so that makes it very negative

25:15all right next we have the very

25:17well-known filipino time

25:20so i hope that we are

25:22eliminating this already or if not

25:30this is the filipino's own way our own

25:32unique brand of time which we know

25:36minutes or hours behind schedule

25:40always late the philippine time is a

25:42late time i hope that

25:45parang

25:46late time

25:50but we are still known for that

25:52the filipino time and and um this is

25:56negating our our good trait which is

25:59respect because you know when you are

26:02practicing this filipino time you are

26:04disrespecting the other person

26:07this annoys the foreigners of course

26:09this annoys the people or this um

26:15yeah annoys and angers the person who

26:18always want to be on time

26:21because especially those personal people

26:23who believe that time is gold

26:25because this is really disrespect

26:27clearly this is disrespect you are not

26:29respecting another people's other

26:32person's time

26:34for showing late imagine another person

26:36is there already waiting at eight

26:37o'clock and you arrived at nine

26:40so one hour naomi nakamura don't say

26:42something

26:44this is really very negative there's

26:46nothing positive about filipino time at

26:48all

26:49okay showing at work late you've been

26:52paid for

26:54that one hour but you're one hour late

26:57and so many things can happen because of

26:59being late so we can discuss that and

27:02you can include that in your reflections

27:04later on which i will

27:06let you do at the end of this

27:08presentation so that i can hear from

27:10your end there

27:12okay so that's about it for the

27:14weaknesses

27:16and negative traits and practices that

27:18we filipinos have

27:21and also of course the positive ones

27:23that i discussed earlier so i hope that

27:27you are learning something i hope that

27:29you will retain those positive traits

27:32and try to

27:33to pass on to the next generation to

27:35pass it on to the next generation but

27:38the negative ones as i mentioned i keep

27:40on mentioning we try to eliminate it we

27:43have to succeed at
