0:00Well, well, here we are. Hello friends
0:04and welcome to another episode of
0:07Cycling Insider.
0:09So, the question is, what is the best
0:13value
0:15gravel bike from Scott that you can
0:18currently buy on the market? And in my
0:22opinion, this is the Scott Addict Gravel
0:2740 bike with the current retail price of
0:32$2,799
0:36hardearned US or approximately 2,350
0:43British pounds. So, let's dive into the
0:47specifications of this bike and really
0:49see what are you getting for your
0:53hardearned money. So, let's kick off
0:56with the frame and the fork on this
0:59bike. So, you see this is the Scott
1:03Edict HMF carbon fiber frame and also
1:07the HMF uh carbon fiber uh fork. This
1:12frame comes with the Shimano press fit
1:15bottom bracket. Absolutely excellent. No
1:18complaints here. And also you will get
1:21uh 12 mm through axles both front and
1:25the back on this bike. Of course uh this
1:29frame comes with the UDH hanger. So the
1:33universal derailer hanger at the back
1:36which is now you know becoming standard
1:38on all the new bikes. As you can see,
1:41the frame also has a dropped seat stays.
1:44This is, of course, very good if you
1:46want to increase the comfort on the
1:49bike. And [clears throat] there are a
1:51lot of mounting points on the frame. So,
1:55you can definitely, you know, bring a
1:57lot of water bottles with you or some
1:59bike packing bags if that's what you are
2:03doing. So, generally speaking, this uh
2:05HMF carbon fiber frame and the fork
2:08absolutely perfectly fine from Scott. I
2:11have no complaints about it. And as far
2:14as I know, this carbon fiber frame comes
2:17with the 5 years warranty from Scott.
2:22Now, when you look at the handlebar and
2:23the stem on this bike, so this is a very
2:26classical aluminum handlebar, aluminum
2:29stem, which is perfectly fine. This is
2:32the in-house brand of Scott, the
2:34Synchros brand. So, Synchros handlebar
2:37and synchros stem. The good thing is
2:39that nothing is proprietary here. This
2:42is a very simple aluminum handlebar,
2:44aluminum stem. So, it's going to be very
2:47easy in the future to, you know, if you
2:50need to replace anything or upgrade any
2:53parts, it's going to be very easy to do
2:55it. And also if any servicing is needed
2:59again your local mechanic is going to be
3:01you know happy because it's very easy to
3:04work on these separate pieces for the
3:07handlebar and the stem. Exactly what I
3:09like to see on these types of the bike.
3:13Let's talk about the settlement seat
3:15post on this bike. So, as you can see,
3:18you will get the Syncros uh carbon fiber
3:22seat post on this bike and also you will
3:24get the Synchros saddle on this uh bike.
3:28So, when it comes to the carbon fiber
3:30seat post, I think this is a musthave.
3:32And luckily, of course, this Scott
3:35gravel bike comes with this carbon fiber
3:38seat post just because it's going to
3:41soak up much more of the smaller road
3:46bumps. So, this is an excellent
3:48excellent addition to to this gravel
3:51bike from Scott. When it comes to this
3:53Synchros saddle, uh I can't comment too
3:57much because I haven't used the Synchros
4:00saddles, but I hope it's going to be
4:02just, you know, decent saddle. And if
4:04you don't like it, um it's very easy to
4:07replace the saddles in the future if you
4:10really need to replace them. Okay,
4:14moving on to the group set on the bike.
4:17So, what are you getting for the
4:19hardearned money? So this is the Shimano
4:22GRX uh 12speed
4:25mechanical group set. So shifters front
4:28mech and the rear mech. So I believe
4:30that this mechanical group set from
4:32Shimano, the 12speed mechanical group
4:35set is perfectly fine for this uh gravel
4:38bike because it's going to be much much
4:40more easier to service than any
4:43electronic group sets. And of course the
4:45parts availability is much much easier
4:48to find with these mechanical group
4:50sets. So [clears throat]
4:52when it comes to this Shimano GRX group
4:55set, we have the Shimano GRX
4:58rear mech. This is the RX820.
5:02Then of course Shimano's GRX
5:06front mech and the shifters. Uh, I
5:09believe that the shifters are from the
5:11Shimano's GRX 600 series, while the
5:15front Mac and the rear Mac are the 800
5:19series. But that's something that you
5:21definitely shouldn't be worried about.
5:22It's it's perfectly fine. It's going to
5:24work excellent. Also, I have to mention
5:27here that the chain rings, uh, Shimano
5:29GRX, so no cutting corners here. And
5:32these are of course double chain rings
5:34at the front which I also believe is a
5:38excellent choice for gravel bikes to
5:40have double chain rings at the front.
5:42And these chain rings are
5:45uh 4630
5:47and this is paired with the Shimano
5:49cassette at the back. So it's a 12speed
5:51cassette and in this instance it is 1136
5:55cassette. This is an excellent you know
5:57gear ratio. So, uh, 4630 at the front
6:02and 1136 at the back. Exactly what you
6:06want for long days in the saddle and
6:09also climbing any steep mountains with
6:14your gravel bike.
6:15[cough and clears throat]
6:17I have to mention here that the chain on
6:20this bike
6:22is the Shimano 12speed chain. And I
6:27would strongly advise you in the future
6:30when you destroy this chain, always
6:33stick to the Shimano 12-speed compatible
6:37chains just because they will work so
6:39much better with the cassette and with
6:41the chain rings which are also Shimano.
6:44When you look at the hydraulic disc
6:46brakes on these bikes, you are getting
6:49the Shimano GRX hydraulic disc brakes
6:51front and the back. And uh what's
6:54excellent here is that the braking
6:56rotors are 160 mm both front and the
7:01back. And also the braking rotor itself
7:04is the CL700
7:07braking rotor. So excellent heat
7:09dissipation and excellent stopping
7:12power. exactly what you need on these
7:16types of uh gravel bikes. Now let's talk
7:20about the [clears throat] wheel set on
7:22this uh bike. So you see the wheel set
7:25is a combination of synchros
7:29uh aluminum wheels. So this synchros
7:33wheels come with the synchros on sealed
7:36cartridge bearing hubs. And this wheel
7:39set, I would expect it to be somewhere
7:41around 1,900
7:44g all in. It is a tubeless ready wheel
7:47set. Um, it has the rear hub, as I said,
7:50the synchros hub with the three pole
7:52system. [snorts] And as it is now, out
7:55of the box, [clears throat] a perfectly
7:57fine aluminum wheel set, the Synchros RP
8:012.0. I wouldn't expect anything, you
8:04know, special from this wheel set. But
8:06in the future, if you ever decide to
8:08upgrade some parts, definitely the wheel
8:11set would be one of those parts that you
8:13can immediately upgrade. I will talk a
8:15bit more about the wheel set later in
8:17the video. Uh some of the upgrade
8:19options, but for now, as it is aluminum
8:22wheel set from Synchros at
8:23approximately, I would say 1,800
8:27gs all in. Also, I have to mention here
8:29that the tires [clears throat]
8:31on this bike are the Schwalby Schwali G1
8:34tires RX and these tires are 45 mm wide
8:39both front and the back, which is again
8:42excellent choice in my opinion for these
8:45gravel bikes. I believe you don't need
8:47to go anything wider than these 45 mm
8:50tires. uh just because I believe that
8:54unless you are some you know competing
8:56on a national level then maybe you might
8:58consider a bit wider tires but for the
9:01majority of gravel bike riders I'm
9:03guessing you will spend something like
9:05you know 60% of your time on the road
9:08and then maybe 40% of your time on the
9:10gravel. So 45 mm tires more than enough
9:14on these uh gravel bikes. They will
9:16definitely make your ride very very
9:19smooth.
9:20So now I'm just going to mention one
9:23more thing about this bike is that the
9:24total weight of this bike in some kind
9:27of size you know medium will be
9:29approximately 9.4 kg again uh when it
9:32comes to the gravel bikes I wouldn't be
9:34so worried about the total bike weight
9:37because this 9.4 4 kg is perfectly fine.
9:41And in the future, if you are upgrading
9:43certain parts on the bike, for example,
9:45the wheel set or, you know, uh better
9:47tires or some other smaller components,
9:50I mean, you can easily drop this weight
9:53uh below 9 kg. But again, don't be so
9:56worried about the bike weight when it
9:58comes to the gravel bikes. Now, just for
10:01the future, I'm going to give you two
10:02options of the wheel sets that you might
10:05consider if you are upgrading your wheel
10:07set in the future. The first option
10:09would be a carbon fiber wheel set from
10:12Specialized
10:13or you know their brand called Roval.
10:16So, this is the Roval Teras wheel set
10:18with a retail price of $1,100.
10:22I mean, excellent retail price for the
10:25[clears throat]
10:26for the carbon fiber wheel set from
10:28Raval. And this carbon fiber wheel set
10:31comes with the DT Swiss 370 hubs.
10:36Perfectly fine hubs with their ratchet
10:3918 system. Also with this wheel set you
10:42are getting a lifetime warranty from
10:44Roval on the wheel set. And I just
10:46mention some of the highlights here
10:48which is basically that the external rim
10:51width is uh 30 mm. [clears throat]
10:55The rim depth is 32 mm. DTSwiss 370 hubs
10:59both front and the back DT Swiss
11:02competition spokes and the tire sizes
11:05that fit on this wheel set are all the
11:08way to 47 mm and I will just mention
11:12here that of course it is a tubeless
11:14ready wheel set and the total weight is
11:16approximately 1,610
11:20g so very very good choice if you want
11:23to upgrade your wheel set to the carbon
11:26fiber
11:27gravel wheel sets specifically you know
11:29this Roval teras wheel set now if you
11:33are let's say even more serious maybe
11:36you are competing in some gravel races
11:38or on a national level then of course
11:40you can think about a bit about the
11:43arrow gravel wheel set and then I would
11:45suggest you to have a look at the
11:48reserve wheels for example this 440
11:52GR uh carbon fiber wheel set from
11:56reserve curve. This wheel set has a
11:58retail price of $1,800,
12:02but it h but it comes with the DT Swiss
12:05350 hubs. So, a bit better hubs. Also,
12:08it is a lifetime warranty on this carbon
12:10fiber wheel set from Reserve. Total
12:13weight will be uh approximately 1,450
12:18g. So, maybe 200 g lighter than that
12:22Roval V set. Also the rim height in this
12:26instance is 44 mm and 40 mm and external
12:32width of the rim is 36 mm. And also on
12:35this wheel set you can mount the tires
12:38all the way up to 50 mm wide. All in
12:42again a superb tubeless carbon fiber
12:45wheel set from Reserve. But yes, you are
12:48paying the the price of $1,800 US from
12:52this aerodynamically optimized carbon
12:55fiber wheel set. As I said, with the
12:58Roal Teras V set, it's an excellent
13:00value for money at $1,100.
13:04It's definitely going to work perfectly
13:05fine if you are upgrading in the future.
13:08So, as I was saying, the best value
13:11gravel bike you can currently buy from
13:13Scott, in my opinion, is the Scott
13:17Addict Gravel 40. You can get it with
13:20the retail price of $2,799.
13:24Of course, if you are being nice and
13:26negotiate nicely, you can definitely get
13:28a discount of 10 to 15% on this bike.
13:32But I'm so glad that Scott is offering
13:34this gravel bike below $3,000.
13:38There are so many likes about this bike
13:40and generally speaking, I don't have any
13:44major uh dislikes when it comes to this
13:47uh Scott gravel bike. So, they have done
13:50an excellent job with this uh Scott
13:52Addict Gravel 40 bike. So, this is going
13:56to be it for today. I hope you like what
13:58I'm doing. If you do, keep on watching,
14:00keep on liking, and as always, I will
14:03see you soon in the next episode.
14:05Cheers.
