Intro

0:00On the way down,

0:01like I put an elbow on him like this to

0:03keep the momentum that way. Ian Garry

0:05again, very very crafty on the feet,

0:08very good range. From orthodox to

0:09southpaw, southpaw is going to give you

0:11a whole different group of dangerous

0:12tools. He's going to have to find a

0:14range that's that little bit closer,

0:16close enough for Islam to be in a

0:17position where he can effectively grab a

0:19leg. Come forward that little bit too

0:21aggressive where you try and cut into

0:22range too quickly, he'll either get the

0:24the takedown or he'll still run you in

0:26the shots. That's something that Islam

0:28was better with better than Khabib. What

0:30is happening? UFC 330, not too far away.

0:33Main event, Islam Makhachev Ian Garry.

0:36Let's break it down in detail. And you

0:38can probably see you're probably like,

0:39what's going on in the background?

0:40They're doing a cooking with

0:41Volkanovski. Get over to Marvin's

Why Ian Garry could trouble Islam

0:42channel and see what we're cooking.

0:43Anyway, Ian Garry and Islam Makhachev.

0:46Interesting fight. I think this is going

0:47to be a a tough fight for for Islam.

0:50Obviously for both of them.

0:52Islam will be the favorite, but I think

0:54a lot of people

0:55counting Ian Garry out, which is

0:57definitely fair, but I think let's break

1:00down why I feel he may have problems for

1:02Islam. Then I'll give my pick towards

1:04the end of it. So, Ian Garry, a very

1:07long fighter. We know he's very good

1:09with his distance. Doesn't mind fighting

1:11on the back foot. You know, he knows

1:13people are going to press. He's really

1:14good with his footwork, going on left,

1:15going on right, staying long,

1:18using his kicks at range. If you get a

1:21little over aggressive, countering you,

1:24catching you on your way in. Does a very

1:26good job of that. Does that work with

1:28Islam? I don't know. Depends on what

1:30what Islam turns up. Islam's always been

1:32a very patient striker. He's very safe.

1:35He stays long himself. He's usually

1:38doing similar to what Ian Garry does,

1:40but will look for the takedown. When you

1:42get over aggressive and you, you know,

1:45you you come forward that little bit too

1:46aggressive where you try and cut into

1:48range too quickly, he'll either get the

1:50the takedown or he'll still run you in

1:52the shots. That's something that Islam

1:53was better with better than Khabib.

1:56Khabib was very good at running into the

1:57takedowns. Islam can run you into

1:59counter strikes as well. Um he loves his

2:02body kick. Uh Islam I'm talking about.

2:04Is this stuff that he's going to use on

2:05an Ian Garry? I don't think so. Ian

2:07Garry is going to be too long. That's

2:09what I I want to I want to see what

2:10happens with Islam. I've heard him say

2:13recently, very recently, say that he

2:15wasn't happy with his fight against JDM

2:18and he wants to take more risks. When he

2:20says that, does that mean when he gets a

2:22takedown look for more submissions? I

2:24think that's what he means. Does that

2:26mean he's going to be a little more

The striking battle

2:28aggressive and take more risks on the

2:29feet? I doubt it. If he does, that can

2:31be a problem for him. Ian Garry, again,

2:33very very crafty on the feet, very good

2:36range, good shot selection, very good at

2:39you know going left and right and

2:41changing stances and doing all that sort

2:42of stuff. So,

2:44I think on the feet Ian Garry will have

2:46a bit of success and will give Islam

2:49problems. But Islam isn't going to be

2:52too aggressive there and I think he's

2:54going to be happy with that range. I

2:55just want to know what happens when

2:57they're both sitting at a long range.

2:59Does Ian Garry want to be more effective

3:01and start to push forward? If he starts

3:03to push forward, now the takedowns are

3:05coming more easily for Islam and then

3:09Islam might even land some of his own

3:10shots because of it. I don't think Ian

3:12Garry

3:13does his best work coming forward. Maybe

3:15when he's got you hurt and got you you

3:17know hesitating and you know got you

3:19figured out and he may come forward and

3:21then and and start letting his hands go

3:22and be that little bit more aggressive.

3:24I just can't see that happen. I see it

3:26being a little more both safe on the

3:28outside, which will be a little bit

3:30better for Ian Garry. Will Islam be that

3:33little bit further? Well, I think he'll

3:35need to be so Ian Garry can't be so

3:36effective on the feet. He'll need need

3:38to be further than he would like to be.

3:40You know, forcing to fire. That find

3:42that perfect range where Ian Garry can't

3:44just stay long and land some shots and

3:46be comfortable there and win win some

3:48points and win rounds because of it and

3:50not give him opportunities. He's going

3:52to have to find a range that's that

3:54little bit closer, close enough for

3:56Islam to be in a position where he can

3:58effectively grab a leg. I think that's

4:00going to be his go-to with his

4:01takedowns, grabbing a single leg rather

4:03than just a double leg. I you even hear

4:05Islam's corner, he would say

4:08a matador, which meant let them come,

4:10let them get aggressive. Once they come

4:11in, you know, and then you do your work.

4:13Let them be the bull running in. That

4:15ain't going to work with Ian Garry. So,

4:16it's just going to be interesting to see

4:17what it what they do there. Now, let's

Breaking down the grappling

4:19get into the grappling. This is where I

4:21think it's going to eventually go. Ian

4:24Garry, if you watch his fight with

4:25Shavkat, does a really good job of

4:28defense when Shavkat is above the waist,

4:32so above the hips, sorry. Ian Garry does

4:34a great job of sagging himself down,

4:37pushing on the hips, getting his

4:39opponent, you know, out of posture and

4:41giving his base back, not letting them

4:44get in the the double underhooks,

4:46get the hips in, pulling him up, keeping

4:47him light on his feet, where they can

4:49just do little trips, knee knocks, and

4:52you know, like suplex type things. Push

4:54their hips further back so their head is

4:58in front of their hips, knees, and feet.

5:01A good posture would be your hips under

5:03you,

5:04your head, your knees, and and feet, you

5:06know, that's a good posture. You having

5:08your your head over your knees and feet,

5:12you're obviously off balance. You're

5:13weaker. You're using a lot of back

5:15muscles. You're not using your hip hips

5:16anymore. Ian Garry does a great job of

5:19putting them in that position. So, I

5:21feel like he's going to have success

5:23when it comes to the the cage work.

5:26Again, it's a lot easier when you're

5:28you've got your hips under you, you can

5:29go leg trips and all that, all them judo

5:31throws that Islam likes. You sort of

5:33need to have your hips involved. Maybe

5:35foot sweeps, but when you're out of

5:37position like this, the foot sweeps are

5:38going to be very hard. So, I think Ian

5:40Garry's going to have a bit of success

5:42there. But, what Ian Garry will have

5:44problems with, and And seen with

5:45Shavkat, the only takedown Shavkat got

5:47was as soon as he got to the hips. As

5:49soon as he shot to the hips and you

5:51know, grabbed the leg or grabbed the leg

5:53and started turning him, he was able to

5:55drop him to uh to his butt and get on

5:57top. But with an Islam who's going to be

5:59much better in that position as well

6:00when it comes to control and chaining

6:02things together, Ingary is going to have

6:04a big problem. Ingary will also

6:06sometimes, as he's on his way down, go

6:08for a submission. He almost got some

6:10submissions with uh Shavkat, but then

6:12you end up in the the bottom position.

6:14That's a position you do not want to be

6:15with cuz you'll be there the whole

6:17round. We seen that with JDM. Not only

6:20that, there's a good chance he could

6:21finish you there as well. He's got great

6:22finishes. Do I sacrifice my position to

6:26go for a submission just in case I get

6:27it? A lot of people like to do it. I

6:29don't know if that's the right idea, but

6:30I think he does tend to do that. You

6:32know, is that because he knew he was on

6:33his way down? If you're already on your

6:35way down, fine, I'll go the submission.

6:37Or is it just sort of instinct for him,

6:38like a Charles Oliveira? As soon as if

6:40you jump on him, he's just going for a

6:41submission. He doesn't care if he ends

6:42up on the bottom. But he's an absolute

6:44gun. Very, very dangerous. One of the

6:46most dangerous in them them positions.

6:48So you can see why he would do that. But

6:49even then, that wasn't enough for Islam,

6:51right? They fought. Islam was able to

6:53get the takedown, end up on top and and

6:55get the submission himself. So you it's

6:57going to be hard for Ian Garry to pull

6:58that off. So the thing is with uh Islam,

7:01you always see the wrestlers, most of

7:03shots are going to be all posture.

7:05They're happy to be out of position.

7:08Like not worry about having a good

7:09posture, come a bit more upright.

7:11They're happy to be down and grab

7:13something, pull themselves in. As long

7:15as they grab contact, they're so good at

7:16as soon as they grab it, whether it's a

7:18knee, a foot, whatever it is, pulling

7:20themselves in and then climbing from

7:21there. And they do so good at that.

7:23Islam uh actually got me down a couple

My experience fighting Islam

7:27of times where he'll just drop when I

7:28would like to do a step over. I like to

7:30do the step over, like you know, change

7:32stances and step overs and whatnot

7:34because you can throw your opponent off.

7:36All of a sudden, you went from orthodox

7:37to southpaw. Southpaw is going to give

7:39you a whole different group of dangerous

7:41tools.

7:42Orthodox here, got your right hand,

7:44that's the rear hand. On this side,

7:45that's more dangerous. As soon as I

7:47change stance, now this is the rear

7:49hand, the complete opposite side. My

7:50knees are my rear knee, my rear kicks,

7:53everything completely changes. And

7:54sometimes you can rattle them. And it's

7:56got you know, working a bit at the

7:57start. And then he he done a great job

7:59of timing that. Later in the fight,

8:02you'll see my did a step over and he'll

8:03just dive straight at the hip. Get his

8:05head off center. The opposite side away

8:07from everything and just uh

8:09just go straight in there at the hip.

8:11Reach down there and and go down. Did a

8:13great job of that. So, I'll explain uh

8:15something that I was able to do with

8:17Islam. Even though Islam obviously still

8:19had his success with the takedowns, but

8:20what helped me so much and why I had so

8:22so much success of building back up was

8:25he would shoot in, get at the hip, drop

8:26me to the ass, do a great job. Rather

8:28than me going for a submission and then

8:30him getting to a complete pin. He's

8:32chest on chest, using great shoulder

8:35pressure, controlling my hips and

8:37shoulders while I've got all his weight

8:39pinning my hips and shoulders to the

8:41mat. Does a great job there. Very, very

8:44hard to get off. We did so much work, so

8:46much training in this position. I even

8:48started in that full pin position. So,

8:51then I had to work from the pin, find my

8:53way to get him down, push him a little

8:54bit down, get over, start to build

8:56myself up, get to a frame, um and then

8:59work from there, right? I noticed in

9:01Garry while he's on his way down, end up

9:04going to a guard or something like that.

9:06Now, giving the pin, accepting the

9:08bottom position. For me, that was never

9:10the case with Islam. You'll notice even

9:12when he did get me with some takedowns,

9:14I would always do a good job of keeping

9:16him at my hips, never letting him climb

9:18up so that you would see my elbow would

9:20always be in in on him and I'll be able

9:22to turn. So, I didn't mind going to the

9:24turtle um or pulling this so I could

9:26always have a frame, keeping him under

9:28me. If he wanted to go around the back,

9:30all right, we'll build up and then go to

9:31this hand fighting sort of stuff, which

9:33I'm okay with. Ian Garry, when he's up

9:35high, he doesn't mind going the uh let

9:37them take the back and the body lock

9:39from the back and pull the hands off. He

9:40does pretty good there. But once he's on

9:42the ground, he sort of accepts the

9:44bottom position. As I said, you usually

9:46he was below the hips and I was able to

9:48get over him and keep him there and it

9:50was easier for me to build myself up,

9:51right? There was a time where he took me

9:53down and he was higher up on my waist.

9:55On my way down cuz we got nice and deep

9:57on the body lock and he had his

9:58shoulders more higher on me. So it was

10:00harder for me to push him down, get

10:01around, beat the corner. Too late for

10:03any of that. On my way down, uh like I

10:05put an elbow on him like this to keep

10:08the momentum that way. So the idea of

10:10that was so he couldn't put all his

10:11weight on me to sort of shift him over a

10:14little bit. So uh as I got there, and

10:16you will see that I end up getting uh my

10:18my sort of like a butterfly hook. And I

10:20end up sort of throwing him and made

10:22enough for me to end up going back to

10:25just a technical stand up. But very

10:27important, had really good contact.

10:29Almost like when you have a switch, you

10:31switch positions. Similar to that, but I

10:33don't go for the switch. I just end up

10:35having my elbow in his lat. So again,

10:38look at the urgency that I had to make

10:41sure I didn't end up in the pin

10:42position. Because if I even was

10:45hesitated for a second, Islam was on top

10:48of me, chest would have slid straight

10:50up, chest on chest, good shoulder

10:51pressure.

10:53Had he's had good hips to control cuz

10:54he's very good with his legs to control

10:56the hips and good with his shoulders to

10:57control my upper body. Obviously, he was

10:59able to get the body triangle on me in

11:01the round before. You've got more chance

11:03of these things starting to happen once

11:04you're in a complete pin. I don't accept

11:07the bottom position. You know, I'll

11:09fight every layer on the way down.

11:11That's what made it so hard for Islam.

11:14Ian Garry does not do this. Ian Garry

11:16will defend defend on his way down. All

11:19right, maybe I'll wrap up. And he can

11:20get stuck for a whole round doing that.

11:23How does Islam get it to the ground?

11:26Most success when he gets to the hips or

How Islam gets the takedown

11:28the legs, anywhere from the hips under.

11:30So So, he grabs a foot and then even if

11:32he's grabbed the knee, and then they're

11:33hopping on the wall, he's good with his

11:35trips. Again, the body lock, Ian Garry

11:37does a great job of sagging, getting him

11:39out of position, and slowly breaking the

11:41grips, and keeping them grips broken.

11:43Making it hard for him to chain from

11:45there. Islam's going to do a way better

11:46job of chaining in them positions than

11:48Shavkat. So, don't be surprised if Islam

11:50still has success in those positions,

11:52but be prepared for Ian Garry to have

11:56some success on the wall work in the

11:58body lock position when he's pressed up

12:00on the fence. I think he's a majority of

12:02the time he's going to be pretty safe.

12:04And if he's doing the right things,

12:06Islam won't waste too much energy going

My official prediction

12:08for something that's not there. But, I

12:09believe he will eventually get the

12:10takedowns, and that's where he can win

12:13rounds or even get the finish. I think

12:15Islam's going to get the win. He can

12:16definitely get the submission

12:18finish. I think he can get it to the

12:19ground. I can see Ian Garry having

12:21success in some of the, you know, some

12:24of the his stand-up, some of the wall

12:26work stuff. Think he will mix it up, try

12:29and stay very long, and be very patient.

12:31I think he's going to have to be He's

12:33going to have to play a boring style to

12:35be very effective, and try and do it for

12:3725 minutes, which is going to be hard.

12:38I'm going to have to go with Islam. I

12:39think he eventually gets it down. He'll

12:41win rounds because of that. And not only

12:43that, he can get the finish.

12:45So, there's my little breakdown of Islam

12:48and Ian Garry. But, let's see what

12:50happens. Let me know your your thoughts.

12:52Let me know if you've seen something

12:53that I haven't. Let me know if there's

12:55things you could you've seen in our

12:57fight that you think Ian Garry does a

12:58good job, and maybe, you know, whatever.

13:01You know, let's have these

13:01conversations. You know I like to chat

13:03to you guys. You know we like to

13:04interact. I like to hear what you guys

13:06have to say. You guys come up with some

13:08good stuff. Let me know what you're

13:10thinking, and let's talk about it.

13:12Appreciate you guys. Let's see what

13:13happens.
